Arriving for the first time on Blu-ray is the 1988 classic gender politics rom-com Working Girl. Famous for giving us Melanie Griffith her most iconic role and it’s Oscar winning track “Let the River Run” by Carly Simon, the film was director Mike Nichols’ return to box office and awards success following the lesser celebrated Heartburn (1986) and Biloxi Blues (1988). And it would be his last Oscar nod for Best Director.

In 1986, Jean-Claude Van Damme was the title alien in Predator before he was hurriedly recast. Ryan looks back at what happened...
In the mid-1980s, Belgian martial artist Jean-Claude Van Damme arrived in America with dreams of stardom. Possessing a finely-honed physique, thanks to years of training in (among other things) karate, kickboxing and ballet, he was ambitious and brimming with self-belief.
The acting bug bit Van Damme while he was still in his teens: he played “a bad guy with all the knives” in the 1984 French gangster movie Rue Barbare and, determined to further his goal of becoming an actor, hopped on a plane to Los Angeles. His first few years in America were, however, tough. He slept in a rental car for two weeks, and made money money by teaching aerobics and martial arts, delivering pizzas, and working as a doorman at a restaurant belonging to Chuck Norris.

Localisation is an odd duck. There are stories you’d think were universal, that would cross the pond and still be enjoyable to audiences in other countries. You’d be wrong. Things get lost in translation, both literally and figuratively; just look at films like Trainspotting, which had to be subtitled when it was released in America. Technically the characters are speaking English, but the thick Scottish accents and unfamiliar slang made the dialogue pretty much impenetrable to a yank audience with some sort of explanation. Still, we should count ourselves lucky that all they did was add subtitles. It could have been a lot worse. They could have remade the film with an all-American cast to make it even more palatable to the Us audience.
It’s something that American studios have got into the habit with, especially with films. Rather than force audiences to sit...

BAFTA’s latest Life In Pictures conversation featured British screen icon Ray Winstone, who proved a big draw despite the unseasonably warm October afternoon. With no new title to stump for (although he did mention his upcoming childhood-focused autobiography Young Winstone), the veteran instead entertained the crowd with a freewheeling look at his four-decade-long career, which includes prominent roles in films such as Noah, The Departed, and Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull.
While he had plenty of quips about his adventures in Hollywood – including an uncanny Martin Scorsese impression – Winstone spoke passionately about his work in British cinema.
Famous for playing East End tough guys – “My wife asked me why I always walk in a room looking like I’m going to kill someone” – Winstone waxed lyrical about Gary Oldman’s work directing him in the gritty 1997 drama Nil By Mouth.

Not every fairy tale in Hollywood has a happy ending.
In Hollywood some marriages start and end in the blink of an eye – and no one knows this better than these starlets. Here's a look at the forgotten first husbands of some very famous women.
1. Damon Thomas (Kim Kardashian)
Before her lavish wedding extravaganza to Kanye West this past May and Kris Humphries in 2012, music producer Damon Thomas was the first to put a ring on it. Kardashian was only 19 years old when she wed Thomas in 2000. They divorced three years later.
2. Ojani Noa (Jennifer Lopez)
Jenny from the block has had her fair share of J.Lovers but Ojani Noa was the lucky lad who first walked Lopez down the aisle in 1997. Their marriage was short lived, however, and they divorced 11 months later. She was later married to Cris Judd from 2001-2002 and Marc Anthony from 2004-2014 (they separated in 2011).

Jack Huston cast in 'Ben-Hur' remake? 'Boardwalk Empire' actor to follow in the footsteps of Ramon Novarro and Charlton Heston Jack Huston, best known for playing World War I veteran-turned-bootlegger-cum-assassin Richard Harrow in the HBO series Boardwalk Empire, may star in the latest Ben-Hur "remake," to be jointly produced by Paramount and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. I have "remake" between quotes because officially this fourth big-screen version of the semi-biblical epic (more on that below) isn't an actual remake of either the multiple Oscar-winning 1959 Ben-Hur or its 1925 predecessor, but a direct adaptation of former Civil War general Lew Wallace's 1880 bestselling novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ, which happens to be conveniently in the public domain. Timur Bekmambetov, whose credits include the Angelina Jolie-James McAvoy thriller Wanted and the supernatural cult classic Night Watch, has been attached as director of what is in fact A Tale...

Famous film critic Roger Ebert once said, “for me the movies are like a machine that generates empathy. It helps us to identify with the people who are sharing this journey with us.” It’s great actors who carve characters from stone that we identify and empathize with, and then they have the power to break our hearts when tragedy strikes.
Since Marlon Brando took acting to another level in the 1950s, actors like Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep with their methods have taken our immersion in cinema and our believability in characters one step further, making films much more intense experiences. It’s in those single moments in which they break our hearts where they earn their place in film history.

Have you ever wondered what Jet, Wolf, and the rest of ITV's Gladiators did after the show finished? Wonder no more...
ITV’s Gladiators - the show that for eight years made children everywhere become interested in sports, eating well and keeping fit... for about five minutes on a Saturday night, then we all went back to our natural state of sitting on the settee eating sugar straight from the packet.
What was it that inspired this minor surge of enthusiasm for being buff? That would be the gladiators themselves. Every week, twelve superhuman powerhouses - six men and six women - would intimidate, bully, and otherwise humiliate whichever puny contestants stepped up to try their luck, beating or hindering them in a series of physical skill games. This took place before the big finale – where the contenders would race each other up a downwards escalator, while the gladiators were...

People aren’t perfect—and famous people are no exception. Every now and again, an actress will utter an insulting slur. An actor will get caught in a sex scandal. A politician won’t be able to keep it in his pants. Things happen. And yet, as Gary Oldman discovered this week, being in the spotlight means having to ‘fess up about your lesser moments in the court of public opinion. The public mea culpa has become a form of performance art (and not just because Shia Labeouf once tried to turn it into actual performance art).

In the world of popular culture, a dreaded disease exists called the Chuck Cunningham syndrome, named after the oldest son on Happy Days who tragically disappeared from the series without explanation. This disease often ravages innocent characters whose only crime was not being useful enough to the progression of a plot. On television, some characters suffering from Chuck Cunningham syndrome are major characters whose absence we notice and puzzle over (for example, Judy Winslow in Family Matters). More often than not, they are characters who, for one reason or another, just did not work when production of a series began.
Of course, Chuck Cunningham syndrome is actually the result of lazy writers who hope we will not remember these minor characters and will focus, instead, on the more well known and loved characters of a series. But some of us do remember, and we puzzle over...

Any one of us could be in the next Star Wars movie. Providing we can act of course – although that’s not a must, judging on Hayden Christensen. But it’s still unusual for a franchise as huge as Star Wars to openly audition actors for their film.
Whilst the selection process for Star Wars has been thorough and meticulous in the past – Ewan McGregor for example was a name on a list of fifty potential actors and chosen, in part, because of his likeness to the late great Alec Guinness – not all films cast actors the same way; certain parts are famously written specifically for certain people sometimes, and often, Hollywood’s most marvellous can skip through the audition process.

The singer released a video for the single "Queenie Eye" from his latest album, New, on Thursday, and it opens with him playing a piano in Abbey Road Studios, where he first recorded with the Beatles. "Being in that room and especially being in that room with Paul ... is quite a rush because that's the room that changed the world," Johnny Depp, who is one of the many celebs featured, says in behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the video.

Have you heard about Girl Rising? If not, let me introduce you to an engaging and emotional movie that will teach you a lot about girls' education. The project began when a team of veteran journalists decided to investigate one question: how do you end global poverty? Girls' education always came up, no matter whom they asked, and they knew there was a story to tell. But while data show when you educate a girl you can change a community, they struggled with how to get people to recognize and act on the opportunity. So they created 10x10, a social action campaign dedicated to getting the word out, and the film Girl Rising. Today, in honor of the Un's International Day of the Girl, people are organizing screenings of the film in their communities. In more than 150 countries, Girl Rising supporters are hosting more than 2,000 events. Let's take a look...

London – Savage early reviews in the British press have already buried this glossy biopic about the anguished love life of Lady Diana Spencer, somewhat predictably, as the late royal princess remains a highly divisive figure in her class-riddled homeland. In fairness, Diana is a more enjoyable experience than the worst naysayers suggest, as might be expected from a film starring Naomi Watts under the command of Downfall director Oliver Hirschbiegel. Both have classy Oscar-nominated track records. Photos: Famous Royal Weddings Bookended by tastefully discreet scenes depicting the buildup to Diana’s fatal car crash in Paris in August

Nowadays it’s expected for an actor to do more than act. Actor-directors are all the rage, with more and more joining the ranks of the double barrelled job title. And after the big storm made with Ben Affleck’s Oscar snub, expect it to increasingly become the norm; a rite of passage for all serious actors.
More common, but less celebrated are the actor-producers. Most of the time these are thespians taking a bigger interest in the films their starring in, but, as we’ll see, sometimes they’re doing it for entirely creative reasons. Some actor-producers are incredibly well known; Tom Cruise produces everything he stars in and it’s a career choice that’s helped Adam Sandler be as big a blight on the movie industry as he can be.
Here are ten famous films you had no idea were produced by equally as famous actors. Prepare...

Thousands of family members, friends, co-stars, and fans flocked to James Gandolfini's funeral Thursday, June 27, to remember the 51-year-old actor who had a "huge heart and spirit."
The ceremony, held at New York City's Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, featured tributes from "The Sopranos" creator David Chase and Gandolfini's widow, Deborah Lin. Famous faces in attendance included Edie Falco, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Steve Buscemi, Alec Baldwin, Julianna Margulies, NBC News anchor Brian Williams, and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.
"My husband was an honest, kind, and loving man," said Lin. "He cared more about others than himself. He took the time to ask others in the course of the day how they were doing."
Thomas Richardson, Gandolfini's former assistant, said that care for others stretched to helping victims of Hurricane Sandy along the Jersey Shore, as well aiding disabled veterans through his longtime involvement with the Wounded Warriors Project.

Olivier Hirschbiegel is no stranger to controversy. The German born director memorably helmed a chilling biopic of the most controversial character of the 20th century in Adolf Hitler with Der Untergang (The Downfall), a movie that dared to show an oddly sympathetic and humane Third Reich leader in his final days, almost making us forget he had slaughtered millions of innocent people. That movie was the first ever German production where a real-life German played Hitler, and in the midst of enormous scrutiny for his decision to make it, Der Untergang now stands as perhaps the most important post-war German film ever made.
Having directed a Hollywood remake of the classic science-fiction classic Invasion Of The Bodysnatchers with 2007′s The Invasion (another move that angered many, if not quite as controversial), Hirschbiegel is back on the biopic trail with a drama about perhaps the most controversial figure in the Western world in the 1990s,...

Arguments – they’re part of life. We’re all competitive beasts, never wanting to admit fault or defeat, and will go to great lengths when defending our honor when challenged or threatened. Arguments have started wars, shattered relationships, broken families, declared victors, but have also awarded respect. A win will always be a win, but longstanding respect and admitted defeat are far greater trophies than another tally mark on a record sheet somewhere. That’s where our story begins for this group of alcohol swigging, loud mouthed master-debaters (had to make that joke once, c’mon!), connected by our love of whiskey, which is only overpowered by our love for all things pop culture – cinema, music, television, gaming, you name it. Inebriation and verbal assaulting, how could this go wrong?!
Needless to say, all we do now is argue about pop culture and hot topics of the day. Despite sounding...

What do Batman, James Bond, Sherlock Holmes and The Doctor have in common? They have all been successfully reinvented in the last 7 years for a new generation to a great success. They have all retained the true spirit of the characters and the source materials with enough clever deviations to be unique, but they have (mostly) had something to say about the world we live in now.
