Emily Blunt’s first Oscar nomination was for the type of role the actress doesn’t normally play. Over the course of her career, the London-born actress has played badass action heroes, musical heroines, even delightfully bitchy supporting comic parts. But in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” Blunt goes into a totally different mode to play a embittered and humorless long-suffering wife type. It’s a jarring transformation; but, given her versatility, a predictably excellent one.
Born to a former actress and barrister in London, Blunt studied acting in boarding school and began her professional career at 18, when she debuted on a West End production of the play “The Royal Family.” In 2003 she transitioned to screen acting with the British miniseries “Boudica” and “Henry VIII,” before making her theatrical film debut as a haughty, arrogant rich girl in independent drama “My Summer of Love” in 2004.

Emily Blunt is laughing. Talk to the actor for any given amount of time — it could be six hours, might be six minutes — and you’ll hear her do this a lot. She’s a full-body laugher, not the snorting, shaking-fits kind but the pitching-about type, as if she was trying to remain steady on a ship that just hit rough waves. A lean-back laugher. Several times during a conversation on Zoom, the Oscar-nominated star will come close to inadvertently exiting the frame when she finds something extremely funny.

Warning: contains spoilers for the Fifteen-Love finale and details of sexual assault.
Tennis abuse scandal drama Fifteen-Love does a few things very well. One is casting newcomer Ella Lily Hyland as Justine, a lead role which will hopefully be the first of many. (Remember 21-year-old Emily Blunt burning like a sun in 2004’s My Summer of Love? Hyland’s in that league. Productions should be falling over themselves to hire her after this.)
The second coup was casting Aidan Turner as Glenn, the tennis coach Justine accuses of historical sexual abuse. Professionally handsome Turner is a world away from the popularly held image of a pervy old man, and a plausible object of lust for the young Justine and others. When Glenn dismisses Justine’s claims as a bitter grudge resulting from professional frustration and youthful infatuation, you could well believe it. A cocky 16-year-old like Justine might well fantasise over this attractive,...

Over his two-decade career, Paddy Considine has played cops, ex-cons, priests, architects, struggling actors, union organizers and rock band managers. But when his agent told him that Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik wanted him to play King Viserys I Targaryen in HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel series, “House of the Dragon,” he couldn’t quite believe it was real.
“I said, ‘Who’s turned this down?’ Because I’m cynical that way,” he says. “My agent was like, ‘I assure you, they’re just coming to you for it.’”
Part of Considine’s disbelief was due to his feeling that the industry at large had only ever seen him as the working-class striver he made his name playing in the 2000s, in films such as “In America,” “My Summer of Love” and “Cinderella Man.”
“I felt like I couldn’t break free from it,” he says. “I was happy to act.

Exclusive: In a seismic development for the indie film sector, which could have ripple effects across the whole film and TV ecosystem, bond companies are refusing to insure movies ahead of a potential SAG-AFTRA strike on July 1.
This eventuality has been bubbling behind the scenes for a little while, but its first known casualty is a high-profile case. Oscar winner Pawel Pawlikowski’s The Island, set to star Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) and Oscar nominee Rooney Mara (Carol), was due to get underway this month with the actors on location in Spain and ready to roll.
However, we understand the threat of a potential SAG-AFTRA strike — on top of the ongoing WGA strike and potential DGA action — has spooked bond companies and The Island filmmakers were told on the eve of shoot that the movie couldn’t be bonded, leading to their two stars (both SAG-AFTRA members) having to...

Emily Blunt believed that her breakthrough role came with her debut film My Summer of Love. Although the feature helped Blunt make a name for herself, it may have also had an undesirable side-effect on her reputation.
Emily Blunt thought she was rubbish in her breakthrough role Niklas Hallen/Getty Images
Blunt gained much attention after starring in the Pawel Pawlikowski movie My Summer of Love. The project also co-starred Natalie Press, and was a story about two completely different young girls forming a bond. Being that it was Blunt’s first full-length feature, the experience helped shape Blunt into the actor and movie star she’d eventually become.
“It was such a weird little film, but the one where I learned the most because I hadn’t trained at all,” Blunt said about it in an interview with Vulture.

With 2018's "Cold War," Paweł Pawlikowski proved that he had a knack for depicting complicated and sometimes frustrating romances. Now, the Oscar-nominated director is looking to continue this motif with "The Island," his newest film which is slated to begin shooting in 2023. To make things even spicier, The Hollywood Reporter writes that real-life couple Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara will play the couple at the center of this assuredly tense yet romantic film.
The film will seek international distribution at the American Film Market, which will be held from November 1 to November 6. FilmNation Entertainment will handle the international rights, while WME Independent will seek a distributor for the United States. In a statement from FilmNation, CEO Glen Basner called Pawlikowski one of the best directors currently working.

Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara will star in Pawel Pawlikowski’s next feature, which is tentatively titled “The Island.”
The film is loosely based on a true story and centers on an American couple who turn their backs on civilization to build a secluded paradise on a deserted island, where they decide to live off the land. But Eden proves difficult to pull off, particularly after a European countess finds out about their plans and arrives with her two lovers planning to take over the island and build a luxury hotel. According to the official description, that triggers some good old-fashioned psychological warfare, with “seduction and jealousy” turning into “sexual infidelity, betrayal and eventually murder.”

The bell just rang, school is out for summer. Maybe it’s out forever—leaving school behind as our heroes and antiheroes spend long, hot days laying about in the city or countryside, anticipating college dreams or fearing a return to the classroom. Or, more likely, not thinking of studies at all, just anticipating the next summer day and how to score more thrills. As the season winds down, here is a mix that is an ode to the teenage summer—so wonderfully captured in many films—a choice selection that evokes endless possibilities: sweat, love, passion, booze, drugs, and questions of the great unknown just around the corner. The characters of these summertime stories are either breaking hearts, heartbroken, running from hell or somewhere lost in between. Some favorite moments include the confusion, chaos and otherworldly essence of Gheorghe Zamfir’s flute from the unforgettable score for Peter Weir...

The Wicker Man
Blu ray
Viavision [Imprint]
1973 / 1.85 : 1 / 93 Min.
Starring Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland
Written by Anthony Shaffer
Directed by Robin Hardy
While away on assignment in Scotland, a melancholy company man experiences a life-changing, and possibly supernatural, transformation. This tale of magic and metamorphosis isn’t Bill Forsyth’s utopian Local Hero but Robin Hardy’s apocalyptic The Wicker Man, the story of a god-fearing detective named Neil Howie. The lonesome hot shot of Forsyth’s film is given a new lease on life but for Howie there’s no such reward—just a whiff of fire and brimstone as his dreams go up in smoke.
The title card reads “Anthony Shaffer’s The Wicker Man“, suggesting that the famed playwright was a more than equal partner along alongside Hardy and the film’s producer, Peter Snell. Shaffer based his screenplay on David Pinner’s Rituals, a...

From Billy Liar to My Summer of Love, the county’s moors and mill towns have been fertile ground for film-makers. Clio Barnard’s Bradford romance is no exception
Claire Rushbrook and Adeel Akhtar are the middle-aged lovers defying familial prejudice and cultural barriers in Ali & Ava (arriving on major VOD platforms on Monday), but that’s only one of the romances unfolding in British director Clio Barnard’s gentle, sentimental film. More metaphorically, Ali & Ava extends Barnard’s ongoing devotion to the Yorkshire city of Bradford, not far from her own home town of Otley.
It’s her third film set in the once-booming beneficiary of the Industrial Revolution, and while she doesn’t over-romanticise Bradford’s mixture of Victorian grandeur and contemporary poverty, a palpable affection for its physical and social geography softens the edges of its realism. More so than in Barnard’s previous Bradford-set films,...

Charlotte Le Bon, the Quebec-born actor and filmmaker who is presenting her feature debut, “Falcon Lake,” at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight, has already enjoyed several careers. 1964, 1965 / 1.33:1 / 975 Min.

If nothing else, Gerry and Sylvia Anderson’s Stingray should be celebrated for inspiring Team America: World Police, the gonzo marionettes-on-the-make political satire from South Park agitators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. If their 2004 farce was designed to provoke just about everybody, Stingray was also pretty out there, albeit in a trippy, Summer of Love kind of way. An aquatic puppet show swimming in psychedelic color, languid pacing, and underwater scenes apparently filmed inside a lava lamp, Stingray reflected the inveterate stoner’s mindset better than anything in Yellow Submarine. Ever since the dawn of recorded music and motion pictures, musicians have often dabbled in the film industry, a lot of them trying their best to cross the G and O off of their coveted Egot checklists. That said, the Oscar is one of the hardest awards to win for many contemporary artists. And this year five-time Grammy winner Questlove is moving along what could be a nearly unprecedented route to Oscar glory: Best Documentary Feature for “Summer of Soul.”
Perhaps the easiest route for a musician at the Oscars is through their songs for films, like past winners H.E.R. (“Fight for You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah”), Adele (the title theme from “Skyfall”), and Bob Dylan (“Things Have Changed” from “Wonder Boys”). Others might try shooting for the acting categories, like Cher (who won for “Moonstruck”) or Lady Gaga (who was nominated for acting but won for songwriting...

In the early days of her career, Joan Didion had a taste of what some music and arts journalists have had to endure over the years: the monotony of record-making. It was 1968, and Didion, working on a story, visited an L.A. recording studio to watch the Doors tinker with Waiting for the Sun. According to Tracy Daugherty’s Didion bio The Last Love Song, she and her husband, John Gregory Dunne, also wanted to scope out Jim Morrison as the lead in The Panic in Needle Park, the junkie love-story movie they’d written.

In its heyday, there was an ad campaign for “The Sopranos” that played, in an obvious but irresistible way, off the word “family.” The show was about Tony Soprano and his tempestuous suburban family, and it was also, of course, about that other family: the Mafia. When it comes to television, though, there is always an additional meaning to family. For anyone addicted to a drama or comedy series — it doesn’t matter if it’s about Jersey Mob soldiers, lowly office workers, or astrophysicist geeks — the regulars on the show come to seem like a family, and they become your family.
“The Sopranos,” though it was about the most dangerous family we’d ever seen on television, had that quality. Every Sunday night, we watched an episode worthy of comparison to the Martin Scorsese of “GoodFellas,” but we also got to hang with Tony and his crew: the bad-boy sociopath protégé Christopher,...

Drake has continued his streak at Number One on the Artists 500 chart to record-extending 31 weeks.
The rapper, who is gearing up for the long-awaited arrival of his new album, Certified Lover Boy, pulled in 116.3 million song streams for the week of August 20th through the 26th.He’s the third artist to spend at least three straight weeks at Number One on the RS500 this year, and considering he’s done that with little new music out this year, expect him to keep dominating the chart once Clb arrives on September 3rd.

Today, Conor and I get blunt. Emily Blunt! As Jungle Cruise opens in theaters and on Disney+, our Blunt B-Sides include: The Adjustment Bureau, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, Arthur Newman, and Wild Mountain Thyme. Additionally, we discuss the star’s first two films which broke her through and her eventual rise to leading lady status a few years later.
There’s heavy chatter on what exactly makes Blunt so dynamic, a detour into how Gulliver’s Travels prevented her from playing Black Widow for Marvel, and how two of these B-sides recall the Katharine Hepburn/Spencer Tracy films from Hollywood past.
Other topics include Matt Damon’s criticisms of Tony Gilroy’s The Bourne Ultimatum script, the...

Lawrence Ferlinghetti, who died last month just 30 days shy of his 102nd birthday, lived a life of fascinating contradictions. From a Dickensian childhood — his father died before he was born, and his mother was institutionalized when he was only two years old — Ferlinghetti eventually landed with wealthy foster parents who nurtured his love of literature and art. He was a World War II naval officer who went to Normandy on D-Day and Nagasaki six weeks after the atomic blast, but was forever afterwards dedicated to anti-war writing, activism, and publishing.

Focus Features treated Wes Anderson fans to a free “Moonrise Kingdom” live stream this week that was accompanied by a Q&a with Anderson himself throughout the film’s runtime. The “Moonrise Kingdom” screening was the latest in Focus’ new “Movie Mondays” screening series, which includes upcoming showings of Pawel Pawlikowski’s “My Summer of Love” and “Mallrats” with a live Kevin Smith Q&a. Anderson was asked by a fan during the screening which original character he considers to be his most important and personal, and the writer-director didn’t need to look very far. Anderson selected Suzy Bishop, the troubled and endlessly cool female protagonist of “Moonrise Kingdom” played by Kara Hayward.
“Well, I suppose the girl in that movie might use quite a bit of my own personal experiences,” Anderson said. “She finds a little booklet called ‘Coping with the Troubled Child,’ and she knows which child it has to be…...

Academy Award winner Pawel Pawlikowski says he’s watching “with horror” as political developments increasingly divide countries across the globe, and admits that he’s reluctant to take a stab at documenting modern life after the success of his two critically acclaimed period dramas, foreign-language Oscar winner “Ida” and thrice-nominated “Cold War.”
“I don’t have a hook on contemporary. I don’t know how to do it, because I’m living it and watching it with horror,” he tells Variety. “Everywhere it’s the same conflict between these two parts of society which are split down the middle, and there’s less and less common ground. You don’t need to make a film about it. You just see it.”

This year’s foreign-language Oscar race has no precedent. For the first time, everybody in Los Angeles who participated in phase one was also invited to winnow down the shortlist of nine nominees to five. That greatly increased the number of voters, as did international members being allowed to stream the shortlist.
Over the last three years, the Academy has made it easier to participate in the phase-one foreign-language Oscar nominating committee, which had a noticeable impact on the overall nominations. Foreign-language films appear in the Best Picture, Director, and acting races as well as Production Design, Cinematography, and Hair and Makeup.
Director Hirokazu Kore-eda
New foreign committee chairs, screenwriter Larry Karaszewski and documentarian Diane Weyermann, pushed for inclusion. “Reaching out to other Academy members worked,” said Karaszewski, “with the profile of many of these films on a level that hasn’t been seen in the foreign language category in a while.

With Cold War nominated for major awards at this year’s Baftas and Oscars, the Polish film-maker talks about returning to his homeland, and how a tumultuous family life has made a mark on his work
In retrospect, the steps that brought Paweł Pawlikowski back to his native Warsaw seven years ago sound something like fate. He had been uprooted from his home city at 14 in 1971 when his parents divorced and his mother abruptly married an Englishman, spiriting Pawlikowski, without papers, to London. Although he had gone back to Poland to visit family during the Solidarity years and after the Wall came down, the thought of living back near his childhood home came as a surprise.
Not long after his 2004 film My Summer of Love won a Bafta as best British film, Pawlikowski suffered tragedy with the sudden death of his Russian wife. He took himself away from film-making for...

You can’t go home again, goes the old saying — and for many Hollywood émigré filmmakers over the years, from Billy Wilder to Milos Forman, it has proved true. But exceptions have always endured, hopping productively between between continents: recently, take Taiwanese-born Ang Lee, fitting in Chinese-language epics like “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and “Lust, Caution” amid glossy U.S. prestige projects, or Chilean auteur Pablo Larrain, who sandwiched the Natalie Portman starrer “Jackie” between homegrown projects.
In this year’s Oscar race for best foreign-language film, meanwhile, a trio of accomplished, globe-trotting writer-directors — all former Oscar winners themselves — are reaping the benefits of returning to native territory after a spell in English-lingo cinema. For Germany’s Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, Poland’s Pawel Pawlikowski and Mexico’s Alfonso Cuaron, going home has given them the freedom to tell ambitious, sometimes highly personal stories they couldn’t have told abroad.
