Audience Award winners revealed as documentary festival reports record numbers.
International and UK delegate attendance at the 20th Sheffield Doc/Fest rose by 18%, breaking all previous records.
A total of 3,129 delegates from more than 60 countries attended the five-day festival – up from 2,657 in 2012.
The festival, which ran from June 12-16, has also revealed the Audience Award winners for best feature and short-form documentary – and the count revealed a tie in both categories.
The Audience Award for best feature doc was shared between Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Act of Killing and Particle Fever, directed by Mark Levinson and edited by Walter Murch (Apocalypse Now).
Oppenheimer’s film, which features former Indonesian death squad leaders re-enacting mass killings, was originally pitched at Doc/Fest’s MeetMarket in 2008 and also won the festival’s Special Jury Award.
The Audience Award for best short doc was shared between Slomo, directed by Josh Izenberg, and Solipsist Part 1, directed by Andrew Huang.

I really don't put much stock in the International Animated Film Society's 2013 Annie Awards, which is why I didn't rush to report on their results on Saturday. One year Disney and Pixar boycott the event, feeling there was an unfair advantage paid to larger contributing sponsors, DreamWorks being the primary example. So with such a nasty stench over the event what good does it do to pay it much mind? That said, I'll be brief in mentioning Wreck-It Ralph topped Saturday night's winners with five awards, including Best Animated Picture. The awards have something like a 75% streak when it comes to helping predict the eventual Oscar winner for Best Animated Feature and as the days have gone on, it's looking more and more like Ralph will be this year's winner (see my predictions here). Pixar's Brave, Laika's ParaNorman and DreamWorks' Rise of the Guardians each took home two awards in lesser,...

I love the art of animation, and it's amazing to see how far things have come and advanced over the years. The industry is changing in terms of technology, but what it all really comes down to is telling good stories. There's been a lot of great animated movies this year, and many of them are up for several awards at the 40th Annual Annie Awards.
Some of the movies nomainated include Brave, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, and Wreck-It Ralph. Out of those films my favorite is a toss up between Wreck-It Ralph and ParaNorman, those were two pretty incredible films. I think ParaNorman has the edge though.
Some of the other animated properties nominated are Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1, Disney Tron: Uprising, Justice League: Doom, Robot Chicken ‘DC Comics Special', South Park ‘Raising the Bar’, and several others.

Chicago – Every critic has a few films in their resume that they were arguably too hard on. Coming on the heels of the beautiful “How to Train Your Dragon” and the masterful “Toy Story 3,” “Despicable Me” felt a bit too thin in theaters but it plays great at home, bolstered by a spectacular Blu-ray release from Universal.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
“Despicable Me” isn’t nearly as ambitious as “Httyd” or “TS3” but that seems like an unfair comparison. Movies should be judged by their intentions and this light, breezy, sometimes-clever comedy works on its own terms. It’s an impossible movie to fully adore and you won’t see it on any best of the year lists but it’s also a tough movie to hate. There’s room in the animation genre for films that aren’t as deep or rich as “Toy Story 3” or “The Illusionist” and...

Chicago – It makes sense that a show as stylish and well-dressed as USA’s “White Collar” would have a beautiful HD transfer for its first-season release but sense and Blu-ray production don’t always go hand in hand. Luckily, fans of this excellent show will be happy to know that this is one of the most expertly-remastered sets of the year to date.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
We’ve written a lot about the creative streak of the USA network that includes “Burn Notice,” “Psych,” “In Plain Sight,” and the cream of the crop, the incredibly entertaining “Royal Pains.” “White Collar” fits squarely in the middle, not breaking any molds or trying anything too daring with its caper-of-the-week format but it is definitely an entertaining program that has developed a loyal following and looks likely to be a consistent performer for the network for years to come. Neal Caffrey and Peter Burke...

Chicago – NBC held a special “in-front” announcement yesterday, two weeks in front of the standard upfront presentations and revealed six news series for the fall while leaving some beloved programs up in the air. On the bubble shows “Southland” and “Heroes” were renewed, but the jury is still out on “Chuck,” “Medium,” “Law & Order,” and “My Name is Earl”.
Of course, the focus of the peacock network in yesterday’s presentation was on “The Jay Leno Show,” which will air five nights a week in primetime, reducing time slots for new and returning programming. Consequently, if your favorite show doesn’t make it to the fall, blame Jay.
The NBC event did not unveil the actual complete schedule, just making a few announcements about new programming, so there are still a few question marks about some of its bubble shows but struggling “Southland,” “Heroes,” and “Parks and Recreation” did get the reprieve for the fall.

NBC has been struggling of late to find its identity as an entertainment programming network. With so many of television's best shows now appearing on cable channels (some of which are admittedly owned by parent NBC/Universal), the major networks have faced an increasing challenge to develop intriguing dramatic television, also facing as they do increased competition from video games, Internet downloads and other forms of entertainment.
But it's been hardest on NBC, which went through a serious staffing shakeup last December, searching for new blood and fresh ideas.
Has it worked? It's still too early to tell. Perhaps the most intriguing new offering from NBC is Day One, a futuristic drama from Heroes writer-producer Jesse Alexander. The story chronicles the aftermath of a global event that devastates the world's infrastructures when a small band of survivors strive to rebuild society and unravel the mysteries of why the event took...

Warning: This might be PG, but it might also be Nsfw with its sex faces and raunchy treatment of cartoon characters.
Yes, it's time for Troma icon James Gunn's latest PG Porn, and this time he asks a question I'm sure we all wonder: What would've happened to the Peanuts gang if they grew up? However, rather than just adult content, we get the Peanuts "Peanus"-style, with Smallville's Michael Rosenbaum as Charlie and Belladonna as Lucy Van Pelt.
As per usual, there is no sex, but there is the classic Lucy viciousness. Charlie invites Lucy in, things start to get frisky while Schroeder plays the piano, and then Lucy reverts to her classic jerky self. Seeing Belladonna in action, I'm thinking that Carla Gugino is playing the wrong porn star. But wait -- there's more. If you'd rather have your Peanus in special Christmas doses, Gunn's blog...

NL 'Planet' draws Paul, Daurio
New Line Cinema has tapped the writing team of Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio to adapt the comic book Planet Terry for the big screen. The project, which New Line pre-emptively acquired from comic book creator Rob Liefeld in July, is based on what was to be an online comic series for Liefeld. The specific story line is being kept under wraps, but it is described as a buddy action comedy with a sci-fi element. Neal Moritz is producing Planet Terry, while Brooklyn Weaver is executive producing. New Line production executives Kent Alterman, Keith Goldberg and Michelle Weiss are overseeing for the studio. Paul and Daurio penned such films as The Santa Clause 2 and Bubble Boy. The duo also recently wrote Dinner for Schmucks for DreamWorks, Car Wars for Warner Bros. Pictures and Special at MGM. They are repped by the Gersh Agency and the Radmin Co.
