Sunil Shetty left the film half way. His voice has been dubbed.
Sunil Shetty didn't complete the film and the few portions of the main action sequences he shot for are also incomplete. One of the first action sequences involving Sunil Shetty have stock footages of Sunil from his climax fight from his film, Pehchaan which are just inserted to the incomplete action scenes to make it look finished.
The film was started by director Deepak Bahry under the name "Dilruba" in 1995. After shooting 8 years, the film was shelved. The film lay incomplete in the cans for nearly 7 years. Actor/Director Chander Sharma got involved in the project in 2002 and bought the incomplete film from its producers. He then changed the storyline of the film to a murder mystery and incorporated the older scenes of Sunil Shetty, Tabu, Laxmikant Berde, Archana Puran Singh, Pankaj Dheer and Gulshan Grover. The new film now had Sunil Shetty and Tabu in a small roles barely connected to the movie. The new characters in the film were written to have some type of connection to the old characters in the film Dilruba.
After the debacle Hum Hain Bemisaal (1994), director Deepak Bahry wanted to have 'Sunil Shetty' as a lead actor in his upcoming film Dilruba. The film was started in 1995 but then was shelved due to a dispute between Bahry and Shetty. 'Chandar Sharma' (Bahry's assistant) completed the film with other lesser known actors after Bahry and Shetty, as well as lead actress Tabu, left the film incomplete. The film was changed from the original romantic Dilruba to murder mystery Khanjar, then released in 2003.
Salman Khan was signed for the film in 1990 and later opted out.
