[Editors Note: Given that we've already reviewed the Vinegar Syndrome release of Graduation Day and both discs are virtually identical bar the extras, we thought we'd review the Major difference between the two Blu-ray releases - the bonus feature on the UK disc, the documentary Scream Queens: Horror Heroines Exposed]
It’s fair to say I’m a sucker for scream queen “documentaries”. Be they the T&A filled features such as Scream Queen Hollywood Hot Tub Party, more amateur-hour productions such as Donald Farmer’s shot-on-video Invasion of the Scream Queens, or the awesome scream queen interviews that featured in Stephen King’s World of Horror – if it features an interview with a scream queen then I’m there. I’m also a fan of the documentaries and Blu-ray extras produced by High Rising Productions – including their previously released slasher movie documentary: Slice and Dice: The Slasher Movie Forever.
Put the two together and… I’m in filmic heaven!
Directed by UK-horror scene stalwart Calum Waddell and hosted by scream queen Debbie Rochon (Terror Firmer, Tromeo and Juliet) Scream Queens: Horror Heroines Exposed features, in a change of pace for horror documentaries, especially those focusing on females in the genre,...

Released in 1981, Graduation Day has become a favourite of slasher movie fans thanks to its plasma-spurting set pieces, maniacal mystery-killer storyline and a cast of cult celebrities that includes Christopher George (City of the Living Dead), Vanna White (Wheel of Fortune) and the perennially topless Scream Queen Linnea Quigley. Now set for a Blu-ray release, with a stunning print restored and re-mastered from a colourful 4k scan, from the folks at 88 Films, Graduation Day will arrive in the UK with an array of newly created special features from High Rising Productions including a new feature length documentary entitled Scream Queens: Horror Heroines Exposed.

Ask any self-respecting slasher buff about the genre’s ‘golden age’ and they will doubtlessly wax poetic about the plasma-packed pot-boilers of the 1980s – the decade of destruction that gave us Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger and the transsexual teen-tormenter of the Sleepaway Camp series. Given the label’s name, what better way for 88 Films to celebrate this halcyon era of horror than with a series of numbered and collectible sanguine-splashed shockers from the period of VHS and video nasties?
88 Films is proud to announce the launch of a new “Slasher Classics” line – kicking off with a digitally re-mastered DVD release of Don Gronquist’s notorious censor-baiting backwoods sickie Unhinged (1982). Further fearful fun will be delivered with Don’t Go in the Woods (1981) – the effortlessly enjoyable “hunt ‘em and kill ‘em” epic that once had British authorities outlawing its very exhibition! Return Of The Living Dead screens this Friday and Saturday nights (July 11th and 12th) at midnight at the Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Ave, St. Louis) as part of Destroy the Brain’s Late Night Grindhouse series.
Return Of The Living Dead (1984) was a spin-off of the Living Dead series that resulted from the sharing of copyright between George Romero and Night Fo The Living Dead co-writer John Russo. While Romero went to continue the narrative with Dawn Of The Dead and Day Of The Dead, both bleak social satire/horrors, Russo undertook a humorous and far more chaotic reprise of the original story. Russo wisely teamed with writer/director Dan O’ Bannon (a St. Louis native!), who pulled out all the stops for one gut-buster of an entertaining horror film. From a strip tease in a graveyard by Scream Queen Linnea Quigley to a massive showdown between the zombies and the law,...

This week, Scream Factory gave all those Kevin Tenney fans out there what they’ve been waiting for by the way of stellar presentations of two of his beloved cult classics on Blu-ray: Witchboard and Night of the Demons. Once again, Scream Factory did a wonderful job of shining the spotlight on two more great horror films that many of us grew up enjoying.
Review: Witchboard Blu-ray
Witchboard, a movie I last saw back in the 90’s when it was still only available on VHS, isn’t by any means the scariest work from Tenney’s career, but there’s a lot to admire about his oddball supernatural story where a super-sexy Tawny Kitaen gets a little too handsy with her friend’s Ouija board.
The story begins when Brandon Sinclair (Stephen Nichols) trots out his trusty ol’ Ouija (pronounced wee-jaa as Brandon so fondly likes to correct people) board...

Back in 1988, in conjunction with the release of A Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, the United American Video Corp. released a VHS tape called The Making of a Nightmare, which ran nearly an hour and dug deep into the behind the scenes making of the fourth installment in the franchise. One of the first and most popular “Scream Queens” from the 1980’s was a girl from Iowa who moved to Los Angeles in the late 70’s with her family. Linnea Quigley started with small roles in even smaller films but she built up her resume and got her big break playing “Trash” in Return of the Living Dead (1985). Since then, she has amassed a wealth of films that cemented her status as a B-movie queen, including roles in such films as Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama (1988), Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (1988), Nightmare Sisters (1988), Night of the Demons (1988), Vice Academy (1989), and many others.

Tis the season to survive Christmas. That pretty much means in any and all ways possible. This is the season that makes your wallet scream, your kids paranoid and forces you into crowded situations with groups of angry parents. Good thing that Anchor Bay gave us the Christmas Survival Double Feature including the first two installments in the Silent Night, Deadly Night series. The same day that A.B. puts out the remake of the 1984 classic Santa Claus kill kill picture, they’ve decided to make available the out of print double feature DVD (not Blu-ray) of one of the most controversial flicks in American horror history (Decemeber 4th… order now for Christmas delivery). Linnea Quigley is a horror icon. When she played Trash in “Return of the Living Dead”, she was the epitome of sleazy punk rock sex appeal. You wanted to do dirty things to her, but you were also afraid to touch her, both because you don’t know where she’s been, but also because she might punch you in the face with brass knuckles. When you’ve been in as many low and no budget films as Quigley, a few are bound to fall through the cracks. Now one of her lost movies will finally see the light of day. Appropriately called “Scream Queen”, the film, written and directed by Brad Sykes (“Camp Blood”), was shot more than a decade ago. On September 15, 2012, the film will screen at the Scare-a-Cuse Horror and Sci-Fi Fan Convention in Syracuse. A DVD release, packed with extras, will follow later this year. Here...

It will be premiering on September 15, 2012, at the Syracuse Horror and More Film Festival, part of the Scare-a-Cuse Horror and Sci-Fi Fan Convention in Verona, NY. Wanna know what it takes to become a scream queen? Let Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens and Michelle Bauer, three of the original scream queens of cinema, show you the way. Check out a trailer for Jason Paul Collum’s “Screaming in High Heels: The Rise & Fall of the Scream Queen Era”, which, as you might expect given the title, traces the rise and fall of the scream queen era as seen through the eyes of Quigley, Stevens and Bauer. This is a great documentary … if you’re into smut! Three girls living in Los Angeles, CA, in the 1980s found cult fame when they “accidentally” transitioned from models to B-movie actresses, coinciding with the major direct-to-video horror film boom of the era. Known as “The Terrifying Trio,” Linnea Quigley (The Return of the Living Dead), Brinke Stevens (The Slumber Party Massacre) and Michelle Bauer (The Tomb), headlined upwards of ten films per year,...

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Breaking Glass Pictures. Director/writer: Jason Paul Collum. Cast: Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens and Michelle Bauer Screaming in High Heels: The Rise & Fall of the Scream Queen Era is a documentary that follows three "Scream Queens" and their careers primarily through the '80s and into the '90s. Michelle Bauer, Linnea Quigley and Brinke Stevens are the three actresses covered. Their hay day came in the late '80s when the collapse of the drive-in theatre was replaced by the portability of the VHS tape. They each made dozens of films. And, each actress drew a cadre of horror and b-movie fans. Their rise was only short lived as mega-video stories such as Blockbuster refused to stock non-mainstream films. However, Screaming in High Heels covers many of the highlights and challenges of their illustrious careers. Director Jason Paul Collum...

Featuring: Brinke Stevens, Linnea Quigley, Michelle Bauer, David DeCoteau, Fred Olen Ray, Ken Hall, Ted Newsom, Jay Richardson, Richard Gabai
Screaming in High Heels comes from the devoted mind of journalist and filmmaker Jason Paul Collum, whose interest in all things Slumber Party Massacre led him to become a fascinated fan of women who star in horror movies. In Screaming in High Heels: The Rise and Fall of the Scream Queen Era, Collum details the horror movie careers of the three women who coined the phrase “Scream Queen”: Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens, and Michelle Bauer.
Collum is a great storyteller, and it’s evident from his previous documentary on Scream Queens, Something to Scream About, that he’s extremely interested in these women’s vocations as a phenomenon of horror fandom. Screaming in High Heels isn’t about Linnea, Brinke, and Michelle as...

I want to say right off that Britt Ekland‘s dance scene from The Wicker Man (the original!) is my favorite of all time. Even though, from what I’ve read, a Scottish woman acted as a body double for all the shots of her lower half (no point in letting facts ruin one’s fantasies, though). I think the Flickchart blog caps off at PG-13, so I can’t actually show you a clip from the film. You should watch the whole movie if you haven’t seen it, anyway, since it’s one of those classics that all upstanding movie aficionados should have under their belt.
I know a lot of you out there immediately thought of Salma Hayek‘s snake dance in From Dusk Till Dawn when you saw that this article was about horror dancing. Sure, I get twitterpated over Hayek as much as the next guy.

A true Scream Queen can't just shriek, cry and cower -- she's got to know how to fight to the death if need be, digging deep to find previously unknown survival skills. A Scream Queen might not be the last one standing, but you know she looked good while she was standing ... and being chased … and dragged … and bludgeoned.

"Hey, somebody get some light over here; Trash is taking off her clothes again." I remember those words like it was yesterday. And I should; I watched that scene of Linnea Quigley disrobing enough times to render my VHS copy of The Return of the Living Dead basically unwatchable. At least for that minute or so of the film. And it's with loving memories like this one that we celebrate our favorite scream queens in two new projects dropping this fall.

Remember back when you was a kid growing up and how you would look forward to the next installment of either A Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th starring two iconic horror film villains in the form of Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees? The key selling point to many great (and tons of not-so-great) Horror films is young, attractive women. You can't have a scary monster or a psychopathic killer without a damsel in distress for them to terrorize.
Sure, a female lead is a necessary component to any film, but no other genre relies as heavily on strong female characters as Horror. The women who do it best and do it more often are awarded the title of "Scream Queen".
They are the emotional core, the eye candy, and the very reason that these films both scare and excite us. The look of fear in their eyes transports us into their world and makes us feel what it must be like to be chased by a demented murderer, mythical beast or demon from hell. As our society changes, adapts and evolves; so must the Horror genre.

Night of the Demons, Witchboard, these are films that horror fans have grown up watching over and over again. So when Kevin Tenney, the director behind Witchboard and Night of the Demons, has a new film coming out, we here at Bdhr take notice. Kevin Tenney's latest effort, Brain Dead starring Joshua Benton, Sarah Grant Brendecke, David Crane and Andy Forrest, is a homage to the horror films of yesteryear. We also wanted to know what Kevin Tenney thought of the Night of the Demons remake starring Shannon Elizabeth (Scary Movie), Edward Furlong (Brainscan) and Monica Keena (Freddy vs. Jason) and in a cameo appearance Linnea Quigley (The Return of the Living Dead). Here's what he had to say about everything.
Who is Kevin Tenney and what are you all about?
I’m a father, a husband, and a filmmaker in that order. I was born in Hawaii to a military family.

Arrow Video does not limit their considerable energies to only Italian masters. They seek out the blood wherever it may be found. Including my home turf, the good old USA. In choosing an American master to champion, Arrow Video did the wise thing and picked George A. Romero, father the the zombie film, himself. In the USA we've had dozens upon dozens of releases of Romero's Dead series, but they'd not been treated as well by the UK.
The USA got Anchor Bay's Dawn of the Dead Ultimate Edition years back, this included all three common versions of the zombie masterpiece on DVD. Arrow Video decided it was time that the UK, and the world, got a competing release. Arrow Video's Dawn of the Dead Blu-ray set features the theatrical cut (Romero's preferred version) in HD, as well as the extended "Director's Cut" version, and the Argento European cut...
