I like to peruse short films on a regular basis. Youtube offers a world of fantastic, undiscovered shorts, and I think its about time the world dedicated a touch of attention to these sleeper gems. My morning scanning brought me to a film ten years aged, but profoundly impacting, and genuinely inspired. That film is titled, The Cat with Hands, and its an unforgiving short that runs roughly four minutes. The story centers on a unique cat whose…...

Last week, I teased a great interview for this Sunday, but last minute logistical issues have sadly pushed that back a bit. Not to worry, however -- as I have an excellent short to share in The Cat With Hands, an excellent live-action/animated horror jaunt. It will leave you with something I've known all along -- cats are not to be trusted; particularly those with, you know... hands.

I am an honest to goodness cat person. A cat whisperer if you will. If your family has a cat and it doesn't like strangers I can change its mind and it will soon be nestled on my lap. But this? This short from 2001 [yes, yes. 2001. Twitch wasn't around then so you'll understand why we're late to the party] by director Robert Morgan- this is one of four shorts to his name- called The Cat With Hands has me second guessing my skills. I may not be the gifted scratcher of cat ears I thought I was. I think they've been sizing me up. Watch and you'll see why.
As brisk as a nursery rhyme, The Cat with Hands is a twisted tale (so deliciously Grimm) about a well-dwelling cat that steals human body parts. That's where the hands came from, see? Amazing how creepy the film manages to be just by attaching our normal limbs to the body of a household pet. Narrated by a single voice throughout,...

As I said in a post yesterday, if other recently acquired short films are any indication, filmmakers making shorts right now should be thinking about centering their films on robots, aliens, or some other fantastical beings or objects… Kinda like the one below, which has been sitting on Vimeo for a year now, and was only just “discovered.” Thanks to BuzzFeed, in a matter of the last few hours, it has surpassed the total number of plays that it had in the entire previous year! Now, let’s just wait and see how long it takes before some Hollywood studio exec finds out about it, and acquires the rights to adapt it into a feature… tick, tock… tick, tock… tick, tock…

Ken's Dream House, Fallon's Glee Club, David Blue remains adorable in space, science experiments after dark, and Ricky Martin is gay and exploited.
On Wednesday we shared with you the smoking hot Attitude cover with Danny Young on the cover. Originally it was supposed to go to hottie cage fighter Alex Reid until his wife Katie Price, famous for being famous, threw a fit on the set about him dropping trou. First she turned Peter Andre into an Oompa-Loompa, now this.
I’ve found this slideshow of remakes that nobody saw coming – and if it’s true, some of this I didn’t see coming. Sure, we all knew about Dune and Red Sonja, but I admit to being knocked off my feet by news of Real Genius, which featured Val Kilmer back when he was adorkable.
Today in weird lawsuits, a 16-year-old is suing his mother for posting to...

Here we are with a new entry for "Today's Short." the first of this new decade. Before we get to it, I'd like to plug something for ShortoftheWeek.com, who graciously asked me to write a guest entry for them last week, in which I reviewed one of my old favorites The Cat with Hands. As for what we're looking at today, it's a little something from everyone's favorite building blocks.
This short film Click from Lego is a Gondryesque (that's a thing now, right?) piece that uses stop-motion animation of Lego blocks to illustrate where ideas come from. Sometimes, they just click. An ode to creativity and inventions, it even has a guy with a spiffy 'stache.

Written, directed and animated by Robert Morgan, The Cat With Hands is a multi-award-winning, 4-minute short from 2001. The project forms part of London-based Animus Film's output and was funded by Channel 4.
This film is "the story of a cat who, legend has it, longs to become human," but, based on a recurring nightmare from his sister's youth as it is, and being the product of creative mind with a certain interest in the macabre, this is about as far away from a cute kitty tale as you can get.
A devilishly dark delight well-rooted in the tradition of fairytales. Enjoy!
