Ribert St. John stumbles in the room, dying with a back in his knife, saying "Yiu did it" to his ex, Melany, Zoe's former Vegas casino superior, who gave a press conference to announce she was going to unseat him from the board of their hotel chain. Meanwhile the insurance company has sold its investigation division to ex-cop criminologist M. Pearl McGuire; the M. puzzles Zoe no less then their case. Main suspects are the VP who own 15% of the stock and may now become CEO, and Jack, the son and sole heir, but apparently neither had time to commit the crime- until a turning billboard from a hotel across the street provides a surprise solution for that problem...

While Dan and Zoe follow Butch Bender to expose him as medical insurance scam artist, someone runs off with a patients life-saving transplant kidney. They promise to get off his back if he indicates the kidney thief, but it's Oscar Winter, who has a leg prosthesis since Vietnam. Searching for Zoes niece Hannah's stolen volcano project, they find Bender's corps in a car booth. Dan then decides to investigate the where-beings of the kidney, plausibly illegally sold, and the nurse Yasmin points to shady employee Jimmy Sharp, who is found overdosed in the morgue. Tracing a vital drug, they find young Wally Cates got a new kidney, which his dad George assures to have donated, but is blood-type-incompatible...

While Zoe doesn't mind M. Pearl McGuire ordered them to attend a rally in support of her ex Bennett Graham's campaign for mayor of Chicago, as her niece Taylor works for his campaign, Dan objects in principle and prefers the current mayor. Then sniper Roy Anderson, who lost his job when Olympia Chemical went bust by Bennetts doing, takes a shot at him but is killed by bodyguards. Zoe finds links from the killer to Norman Culmer, a major donor of mayor Kathryn Parker, and as they find her lover. When Zoe realizes someone else could be the target, they find more connections and suspects...

Zoe is having a terrible time: her lover Paul Hermann, who she met playing bridge on the Internet, tells her he's married, she's a victim of various incidents that indicate identity theft, and her police contact Sgt. Robowski treats her as a suspect when Paul is found murdered, pushed down a high-rise staircase, with her broken-off stiletto-heel thrown after him. Further investigations learn Dan and Zoe she was set up methodically by someone in the building who still watches them. Several tracks lead to a computer - and bridge expert who she once got convicted to jail who is free again...

The police first believes his French wife Lisette Jones, but Zoe witnessed fashion designer Dyson Jones being kidnapped for a high ransom, and Lisete asks the firms help as she was forbidden to contact the police. The third partner Noah suggests it's the work of creditor and competitor Tommy Renaldo. Lisette thinks of fired employee Jamie Rodrigue, whose husband -a sculptor and gravedigger on parole- Miguel's alibi is fake. Lisette drops the ransom money, which is craftily picked up by a masked man who gets away. At home Zoe's nephew and nieces fight and make a mess of the housekeeping, even worse after Zoe declares them responsible for each-others chores. In Tommy Renaldo's office they find Dyson designs, which he claims to have bought as payment for debts. After M. Pearl McGuire's former police colleague Nick signals Lisette someone's loan shark debts, Zoe guesses right the whole kidnapping was a set-up which got twisted...

The team has mounted a sting for diamond robbers at their client, the Jayhawk security company, but their cop connection Leo Lombardi looses patience and suggests Dan may have gone over to Carmen, who he had to charm into his shower; then he learns Eric Vantana blackmails her, and they didn't rob Sinclair Jewelers which was staked, only Patani; he accepts on his own to get her the plans for the newest equipment in order to get introduced to Eric, who changes plans at the last moment; Zoe has to guess which of six possible jewelers is the target...

Famous basketball rookie Raymond Sayer, who kindly gave Zoe and Dan autographs shortly before, is nearly arrested by the police fleeing from his place where a party was held by his darker mate Cecil Taylor when Tina Mathis, who was out of boyfriends and income, got murdered by strangulation. After an anonymous call to his agent that Raymond doesn't belong, they find him at his hometown, Riverview and make him return to ask bail. He claims to be innocent, his glass was spiked with liquid ecstasy. Then Raymund's neck chain, the bloody murder weapon, is planted in his team locker; Dan and Zoe suspect Cecil and his jealous wife Yolanda wanting to eliminate Raymund as a competitor, but Cecil is found nearly dead in the sauna, equally drugged...

M. Pearl McGuire was bitching about cutting expenses to maximize profits and re-investing in publicity as clients don't just walks in, when one did asking if they take missing persons, notably- him, as he has no idea who he is. It takes Dan and Zoe, who proves most anxious to take his case, quite some snooping to find out he's not Brad Pitt, as he seems to think, but Alan Farmer who is an exceptionally accident-prone flutist, and why there are actual attempts on his life.

Clairvoyant Maddy makes true predictions, but always cryptic, often mutilated phrases, and in a restaurant Dan and Zoe hear her says they are all going to die. At the request of the mother Dan and Zoe examine dr. Janos Kadar's pharma-company where Nora Sutton was killed three month earlier, officially in a lab gas accident, while working on a most promising liver cancer medicine, Livicor, which is alas the target of radical action groups. Suspect activist Toby Kray has an alibi as he was in New York. Maddy's latests utterings such as 'fuzzy dice' they find in a parked truck and after noticing Noras reports are suspiciously clean the latest utterances 'central refuge' and 'flush the Red Lion' concerns a bomb Dan dismantles near the lab, a centrifuge and a place, well actually a 'red line' in the firms lab where a security code is hidden, but here is a lethal trap... Meanwhile niece Taylor Internet-auctions the silver dollar of Zoe's late sister, but in the end turns out for which worthy cause and who is 'Smooth talker' who outbid Zoe...

Zoe, a radio fan of his, is delighted to meet blind presenter Jake Osbourne when someone called his show claiming to plan to kill him; Jake clearly doesn't trust the police, so Zoe suggests him to hire her and Dan- after questioning her knowledge of his stories, he agrees. His recent radio shows attacked various companies, notably Benjamin Kasdan's, which according to Jake manipulated his own stock value and stole from his let-down employees, so Zoe pretends to be his interior designer. On the home-front, cousin Cliff is making a video of Zoe's life; Taylor is septic whether one person can take on a big company, let alone by a bake-and-sale as Zoe organizes for the duped employees. Charlotte Timms, the caller, is in hospital- her car was crushed; Zoe is convinced someone doctored it to prevent her alleged proof on tape being aired. In the studio Zoe finds Jake's housekeeper Mrs. Markov knocked unconscious, according to her by two masked men- every tape of the radio studio is wiped. Zoe presses him to do the Osbourne Hour anyhow, with her as improvised guest. Kasdan's official legal charge of liable makes the station take his show off the air. Zoe guesses Charlotte knew she was followed and hid the dictation tape in a Main Street Video store cover- the Russiel Crow movie The Insider she rented, and is with someone else now- the clerk can't tell who but does for §50- 'George Washington, at Mount Vernon', so Dan snatches his note back. Zoe realizes Sprinkles, Jake's unhygienic 'friendly' Jake Russel, didn't bark at the intruder, so it must be someone they knew. Meanwhile Jake finds his young assistant Steve knocked down...

On a bridge a sports car nearly runs over Dan, who had run out of gas; a Russian young woman gets out, screaming to the driver, hands Zoe her baby girl Svetlana and jumps down. Taylor asks Zoe to talk as her 'Cyrano' to weird-looking guitarist Monty, not quite to Zoe's liking. Dan admirably minds the baby till social worker Bonnie Peterson collects her- then they find it was someone else, physically without resemblance. The detectives track the expensive baby blanket to Linda's shop, and get sixteen buyer names, none Russian, but recognize the car from the bridge. The driver, her accountant, tells them Tatyana is an Olympic diver and screamed for money, he thinks for dope. She was offering herself on dating website 'love Russian Mission' run by Pavel and Oxana Petrovich, so Dan pretends interest in Anastasia -played by Zoe-, who is flown in illegally, and asks for the whereabouts of her friend Tatyana and baby Svetlana. Snooping she finds a receipt from Linda's shop linking the fake Bonnie to clients Nick and Elena (Yelena) Collins- at their home they find the baby, apparently snatched from them by Tatyana. Chicago PD Detective Leo Lombardi helps them put the heat on the couple, which now turns over Tatyana, who wants her baby back which was stole by catalog bride Elena, who turns out to be...

Everybody was late, waiting for the lift, when an armed woman, Kathy, says nobody goes home till her son Glen Tippit, who will be sentenced 'innocent' on Monday, has been cleared of the murder of senator Carlson's daughter Andrea, whose corps was found clobbered to death in his co-ed dorm at Grant College, as the firm tracked him down. M. Pearl McGuire is kept hostage, but in her office shown the $250,000 Kathy brought because she got an e-mail from a firm employee that's the price for proof of Glen's innocence. Dan and Zoe are taken in confidence to help find the traitor. Dan quickly proves Kathy's 'gun' is a cigarette-lighter, but M takes her place and blocks the lift, determined to purge her staff. They all brainstorm, which proves hard. Hugh, who habitually makes passes at Zoe, now offers her double pay if she joins his spanking new detective agency. They find out several colleagues have interesting secrets and most of them lie. Then someone creates a power failure to steal the money case...

Zoe's ex Miles Jacobs, comes to the agency saying he has a stalker. Zoe doesn't want to get involved but Pearl overrules. Zoe discovers he was at a building when a man died but he claims he wasn't there. And she eventually discovers that he's been stalking himself and he suffers from multiple personality disorder.

When Zoe has back-pain, M. Pearl McGuire sends her to her own Dr. Merrell. A stranger masquerades there as Dr. Quentin Jessup and gives her efficient myotherapy, deep massage, and a date. Dan and cop Leo Lombardi are presented to ex-cop Gigi Germain, who usually tracks non-criminal missing persons but needs his help within 48 hours to catch Quentin Myers, who ax-murdered his wife six months earlier; they ignore he is now Quentin Jessup. Quentin scores a B-minus with the kids (they never give an A on a first date) after an endless grilling, but Zoe is sold. Leo uses a lame excuse to 'drop by' at Zoe's and gets invited while she makes jambalaya with Quentin; after this scares Quentin, Leo asks Zoe out, but passes out drunk-sick before she can wriggle out of refusing bluntly. Dan is not amused by Gigi's brutality on their search, yet they play strip-poker; Zoe calls him before they show skin, and finally learns they are dealing with the same Quentin, but neither has heard his story yet...
