To most, Madonna‘s Like a Virgin was a fun slice of dance music. On the other hand, her father found it mortifying. He wasn’t any happier when pictures of his daughter appeared in Playboy. The “Express Yourself” singer once released a ballad about her father, and the picture it paints is not flattering.
Madonna’s father didn’t want to talk about ‘Like a Virgin’
During a 1991 interview with Rolling Stone, Madonna was asked about how her father, Silvio Anthony “Tony” Ciccone, reacted to a risque performance from her film Madonna: Truth or Dare. She avoided the question. “I don’t know if he’s seen all the other things I’ve done,” she said. “I’m sure when the nude pictures in Playboy and the album Like a Virgin came out, he went through a period of extreme shock.” While tame today, nude pictures and Like a...

Madonna‘s songs have provoked many controversies over the years, but only one was accused of promoting violence against women. The Material Girl interpreted the track differently. Notably, the tune in question was from a hit movie that starred Madonna and a major movie star she was dating at the time.
Madonna wrote a controversial song at the request of Warren Beatty
One of Madonna’s most famous movie roles was the femme fatale Breathless Mahoney in the comic book adventure Dick Tracy. In that film, Madonna’s then-boyfriend Warren Beatty played the title character. The film inspired the album I’m Breathless, which is most known for the house song “Vogue.” I’m Breathless also included another hit single: the jazz tune “Hanky Panky.” “Hanky Panky” is a rather risque paen to … spanking.

Pop music history is filled with roads not take. Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” could have been recorded by one of many other artists. The musical geniuses who wrote the track revealed what they thought of Madonna’s take on “Like a Virgin” and why they believed in the song when nobody else did.
Madonna’s ‘Like a Virgin’ has an interesting connection to Whitney Houston
While “Like a Virgin” is one of Madonna’s defining songs, she had no role in writing it. Instead, the track was co-written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. The songwriting duo also penned classic hits such as “So Emotional,” Divinyl’s “I Touch Myself,” and “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper. During an interview with Songwriter Universe, the songwriters revealed that many artists turned down “Like a Virgin” before Madonna embraced it.

Exclusive: Virgin River just completed its fifth season with a two-episode Christmas special. It followed a 10-episode Part 1, which was released in September. The upcoming sixth season won’t follow the same pattern.
“No, I don’t know if I would do the holidays again. It’s sort of, been there done that, and I feel like we did it in a big way that I wouldn’t even know where to start to explore,” Virgin River showrunner Patrick Sean Smith told Deadline in an extensive interview. “I think we’re probably looking at a 10-episode season moving forward.”
After producing 10 episodes in Seasons 1-3, Virgin River went up to 12 episodes in Seasons 4 and 5. The hit romantic drama starring Alexandra Breckenridge and Martin Henderson is now expected to go back to 10 episodes a season, starting with Season 6, with no more holiday specials planned.

How the actress’s upcoming projects look to expand her image.
There’s no denying that Margot Robbie’s sex appeal has played a role in the trajectory of her acting career. However, while she’s often listed among Hollywood’s rising stars, her sex symbol status has not come without a price, as perhaps best exemplified by Vanity Fair’s obnoxiously terrible profile of the actress, which should not perhaps be counted as journalism so much as patronizing sexist ooze. The article mentions that Robbie is a talented actress, but mostly focuses on trying to describe her physical appearance as extensively and creepily as possible, with seemingly a secondary goal of irritating the entire country of Australia, or as Rich Cohen calls it, “America 50 years ago.”

"Everest," directed by Baltasar Kormákur, has been selected as the opening film, out of Competition, of the 72nd Venice Film Festival (September 2-12 2015). The festival is directed by Alberto Barbera, organized by the Biennale, and chaired by Paolo Baratta.
The world premiere of "Everest" will be screened on September 2nd in the Sala Grande (Palazzo del Cinema) at the Lido. Inspired by the incredible events surrounding an attempt to reach the summit of the world’s highest mountain,"Everest" documents the awe-inspiring journey of two different expeditions challenged beyond their limits by one of the fiercest snowstorms ever encountered by mankind. Their mettle tested by the harshest elements found on the planet, the climbers will face nearly impossible obstacles as a lifelong obsession becomes a breathtaking struggle for survival.
"Everest" is a Working Title Films production starring Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Robin Wright, Michael Kelly, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley,Emily Watson and Jake Gyllenhaal, produced by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Baltasar Kormákur, Nicky Kentish Barnes, Brian Oliver and Tyler Thompson. The story was adapted for the screen by William Nicholson ("Gladiator") and Oscar® winner Simon Beaufoy ("Slumdog Millionaire").
The film was shot on location in Nepal on the foothills of Everest, the Italian Alps and at Cinecittà Studios in Rome and Pinewood Studios in the U.K.Universal will distribute Everest worldwide, and it will be released in the U.S. exclusively on IMAX 3D and premium-large format 3D screens on September 18th. It will be released wide in the U.S.—including standard 2D and 3D—on September 25th. Italy releases the film on September 24th.
Born in Reykjavik, Iceland, Baltasar Kormákur is an actor, producer and director whose truly global work spans theater, movies and television. After "Everest," he will produce and direct "Vikingr," a big-budget action adventure set in the world of the famed Norse warriors that is inspired by the Iceland’s epic Sagas. He is also set to direct the eco-disaster film "Cascade" and write and direct a crime thriller based on the events that inspired the Filipino film "On the Job." Recently, Kormákur and his frequent collaborator, Agnes Johansen, produced the Icelandic comedy "Virgin Mountain," directed by Dagur Kari.
Kormákur has directed several feature films in the U.S: 2010’s "Inhale," an independent film produced by the L.A.-based 26 Films, starring Dermot Mulroney, Diane Kruger and Sam Shepard; 2012’s "Contraband"—starring Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster, and Kate Beckinsale—which is a remake of Oskar Johansson’s "Reykjavik Rotterdam," written by Arnaldur Indridason, and in which Kormákur played the leading role and produced it with Agnes Johansen through his Blueeyes Productions. His last American film, the action-comedy 2013’s "2 Guns," starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, has grossed more than $131 million worldwide to date.
He also has several Icelandic projects in the works, including the psychological thriller "The Oath," which he plans to direct, from a script he co-wrote with Olafur Egillsson. Inspired by true events and set in modern Iceland, Kormákur will produce “The Oath” with Johansen.
The director graduated as an actor from Iceland’s National Academy of Fine Arts in 1990. He was immediately signed on by the National Theatre of Iceland, where he worked as one of the leading young performing artists until 1997. During the last two years of his assignment he also directed several ambitious works, after having produced and directed highly popular, independent stage productions alongside his projects with the National Theatre.
In 2000, he wrote, directed, acted in and produced the feature film "101 Reykjavik." Subsequently, Variety selected him as one of the “10 Directors to Watch.” Soon after, Kormákur formed Blueeyes Productions and has maintained his focus on feature film writing, producing and directing. His films "The Sea," "A Little Trip to Heaven," "Jar City" and "White Night Wedding" have all been very successful in Iceland and won numerous international awards. Kormákur’s "The Deep," which eerily captures the tragic real-life story of the lone survivor of a capsized fishing boat off the frigid Icelandic coast, premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival and was shortlisted for the foreign language Academy Awards®.
Recently, Kormákur optioned Iceland’s beloved, Nobel Prize-winning book “Independent People” to develop as a feature film and will produce the American remake of "Jar City," along with CEO of Lava Bear Films, David Linde. He also partnered with Ccp Games to bring the "Eve Universe" game to television. The Rvk Studios team, in collaboration with Ccp, will create an original concept and storyline set in the "Eve Universe." Additionally, he also produced and directed the Icelandic original serialized crime drama "Trapped."
All of Kormákur’s films are made under his Rvk Studios (formerly Blueeyes Productions), which recently opened a television arm and partnered with Dadi Einarsson and the Icelandic VFX company Framestore, now called Rvx Studios.

House of Cards will air on UKTV's Drama from Saturday (July 12) - but the star of this four-part serial is not Kevin Spacey's ruthless Us official Frank Underwood, but rather Tory chief whip Francis Urquhart, played with charming malevolence by Ian Richardson.
Adapted by Andrew Davies - writer of Mr Selfridge, Pride and Prejudice and many more - from Michael Dobbs's original novel, the UK iteration of House of Cards was a smash hit on both sides of the Atlantic. Scoring BAFTA and Emmy wins in the early '90s, it went on to inspire the acclaimed Netflix series.

In an interview with EW, Jane Lynch revealed that she gets cast in a lot of roles that were originally scripted for men. Lynch said, “I have numerous roles that I’ve played that were originally written for men. The first role I ever had was playing a king in The Princess and the Pea story. My character in 40-Year-Old Virgin originally was a man. I’ve played tons of doctors and teachers and lawyers on guest spots on sitcoms that were originally conceived for men, that my agent was smart enough to say, 'Do you see a woman in this role?' That’s happened to me a lot.

Previously on Pretty Little Liars, Caleb hacked into Maya's website page, and the Liars, sans Emily, sat around eating popcorn and Red Vines and watching Maya's personal videos like a couple of Garrett Reynoldses. Ezbian's magnificent mother wafted onto the scene, insulted Aria in every possible way, and offered her literal cash money to set their little chipmunk free. Toby made every face he could think of, and then skipped town to practice making more faces. Hanna petitioned the Wizengamot of Radley Institute not to send Mona to the Gotham Penitentiary. So shocked was she by her success that she smashed her face into Dr. Wren's face for some celebratory snogging. And Emily finally gave herself over to the dazzling cataclysm that is Paige McCullers.
Rear Window Brew. Spencer Hastings is consumed by hysteria. Not the normal...

Carson McCullers is a literary icon, an author whose work was important for many reasons, but largely because she was a great storyteller about the South. Her novels, short stories and plays have inspired many of today's contemporary writers, and she was also the inspiration for a play about her that Suzanne Vega put on in New York this past year.
Now she'll be immortalized on screen by Jena Malone in the biopic Lonely Hunter.
Deborah Kampmeier, who was behind Virgin and Hound Dog, will be directing and producing the film which was written by lesbian activist, professor and writer Sarah Schulman (The Owls). Sarah's description of the film is as follows
The story of Carson McCullers — 1940's southern author of Heart Is A Lonely Hunter and Member of the Wedding — and her two tumultuous marriages to the same man. Best friend of Tennessee Williams, mentor of Truman Capote, roommate of Gypsy Rose Lee,...

The Children’s Hour is one of the most famous (sometimes infamous) play-turned-film about a lesbian relationship, and it doesn’t include any women kissing, much less scandalous scenes of Sapphic sex. Yet it’s a story that has made itself relevant decades after its debut (the play was first produced in 1934; the film starring Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine came out in 1961), and the new West End theater production has found a way to make it even more enticing for theatergoers: Elisabeth Moss and Keira Knightley are in the starring roles.
Elisabeth is best known for playing Peggy Olsen in Mad Men, and on the last season of the AMC drama, Peggy befriended a lesbian, Joyce. In the past, Elisabeth has shared some on-screen lesbian sex in the film Virgin, for which she was nominated for Best Female Lead at the Independent Spirit Awards. Now that she’s playing...

12.15am GMT: Greetings all, and welcome to the preview to tonight's Golden Globes liveblog. While I may not actually be on the red carpet in Los Angeles, I will be reporting to you live from my red sofa in New York. Truly, no expense is spared in the Guardian liveblog department. This is journalism in action, people! Suck on it, Woodward and Bernstein.
Oh, I do love the Golden Globes. So much more fun than the Oscars, because the nominees tend to be more what my cousin Catie calls "loosey goosey", or what I call "drunk". The usual explanation for this is that it's because there are so many more acting categories...

Talk about Geek Heaven.
You gotta love the "Comic-Con Girls" version of "California Gurls" by Katy Perry. Even if you're not a geeked out Comic-Con attendee, this is pretty hilarious with references to "Star Wars," "Lord of the Rings," and "Harry Potter."
Not mention a ref to the Comic-Con freebies, discussed in Zap2it's own Comic-Con Virgin expose!
Appearing in this video: Katie Wilson, Maxwell Glick, Angie Griffin, Chad Nikolaus, Andre Meadows, Drew Griffin, and Katrina Hill.
Keep reading for the lyrics so you can sing along with the gurls and geeks.
Greetings Fanboys & Geek Girls
Roll that 18 sided die
We're gonna embark on a master quest
I know a place
Where the geeks all come together
Dorks, gettin' wild
Just to look at action figures
Sippin' Apple Juice
Standing outside in the long lines (it's hot)
The nerds
move their masks
As we hand out all the free bees...

Virginity! It's a topic that Hollywood and cinema love to pursue. Writers and directors love to push boundaries and create remarkable, sometimes real, sometimes ridiculous situations concerned with what happens when someone does (or doesn't) give up their 'most precious gift' (i.e., having sex for the first time). While films concerned with boys' sexuality tend to err on the side of raunchy comedies - Losin' It, Risky Business, American Pie - movies concerned with the virginity of young women run an interesting gamut. We chose a grab bag of films for this week, concerned with virginity and its relationship to power, religion, and madness. The Miracle of Morgan's Creek, Splendor in the Grass, Elizabeth, The Virgin Suicides, and The Magdalene Sisters would all pair nicely with Deborah Kampmeier's Virgin (2003), starring Elisabeth Moss (who is currently best-known as Peggy Olson on Mad Men). And it must be noted, we're leaving out horror films,...
