Hypokrit Theatre Company and Junoon Performing Arts present Indian classics re-imagined with the showcase of Devdas and Choker Bali. The presentation of the dual performances will run from November 4th – 20th, at the Theater for the New City in New York.
Devdas – a modern day dance spectacle is set in India’s hyper-competitive and hyper-masculine reality dance competition world. It’s the story of two women who coveted both, the main prize and the man. Devdas will be portrayed from the point of the two women that loved him through a ballet set in modern India. This theatrical presentation will use original music composed by Aalap Desai, and contemporary choreography by Swarali Karulkar.
Choker Bali is an exploration of the life of widows in 20th century Calcutta, in which our one particular widow Binodini becomes entangled and forbidden love triangle. The performance is adapted by Dr. Partha Chatterjee from Rabindranath Tagore...

Since she first stepped on screen in Mani Ratnam’s Iruvar, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has created some incredible roles both in the South and Hindi film industries. That first film showed that Aishwarya is an actress that likes a challenge, because she played dual role in the critical and box office success. Since her debut, with each new film, the actress has always chosen her roles very carefully and showed tremendous versatility in the characters she portrayed on film. Think of her incredible performance in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, or in the brilliant Taal, as well as Jeans, Raincoat, Chokher Bali, not to mention her total transformation into the characters in Devdas, Jodhaa Akbar and Guzaarish and that is just to name a few.
The actress took a family sabbatical from acting and fans eagerly awaited her return. The question on everyone’s mind was when she was ready...

Actor Jisshu Sengupta has worked in some of the most prestigious films- Bose: The Forgotten Hero, The Last Lear, Barfi! and Mardani, to name a few. And we are not even talking about his Bengali films like Chokher Bali, Naukadoobi etc.
Jisshu will next be seen in Shoojit Sircar's Piku, once again featuring Amitabh Bachchan (like in The Last Lear), along with Irrfan Khan and Deepika Padukone. Giving reason for being so selective, Jisshu says, "Yeah you are right. I have been lucky to work with quality directors like Shyam Benegal, (late) Rituporno Ghosh, Shoojit Sircar, Aparna Sen etc. Actually I believe in quality work and as I have been getting good projects regularly I did not venture much elsewhere. But that does not mean that I will not work in big commercial ventures. You know I was also offered Kahaani but unfortunately I could not do it"

Its television time once again for Anurag Basu. The director of path-breaking films like Gangster and Barfi is all set to return to his roots. Anurag had started his career on television directing several episodes of Tara in 1993. He also directed a large number of episodes of Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Tthi before branching out into filmmaking. But now Anurag has gone back to television with a brand new adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore's Chokher Bali. Designed for television, the film has turned out so well that it's now being considered for the large screen Says the film's leading lady, Radhika Apte, "It's been made for the Epic channel. When Anurag Basu offered me the role I just wanted to do it. I didn't care which medium it was for. Anurag is a director for whom I'd do two shots in a short-film. And what a mind blowing script.

Sushmita Sen who turns a year older on November 19 has secured herself a very unusual birthday gift. There is good news for Ms Sen's fans. She has managed to convince the director Srijit Mukherjee of her first Bengali film Nirbak to let her speak in the film in her own voice. Though she doesn't speak Bengali at home with her daughters, Sushmita Sen loves her mother tongue and is practicing towards thinking in Bangla. Says the director, "I was surprised by how fluently Sushmita spoke Bangla. She speaks better Bangla than Raima Sen although the latter spends a majority of her time working in Kolkata. So yes, Sushmita will speak her own lines. I firmly believe when you dub an actor's voice you reduce the performance by 50 percent. Rituda (the late Rituparno Ghosh) and I used to have long discussions on this." There is a tradition of actresses from Mumbai...

The passing of Rituparno Ghosh in 2013 left Indian cinema bereft of one of its finest craftsmen.
The Kolkata-born writer, director, activist and literary figure – just 49 years of age at the time of his untimely death – was widely recognized as the spiritual successor to the legendary Satyajit Ray.
Now the life and work of this creative genius is set to be celebrated at the 16th annual Tongues on Fire London Asian Film Festival (Laff) to be held in June across the British capital: a city which held particular affection for Ghosh.
The Festival – Europe’s oldest and most respected showcase for independent South Asian cinema – will hold screenings of three of Ghosh’s most critically acclaimed films and a series of discussions on the filmmaker’s immeasurable contribution to Indian cinema.
The tributes will begin with a screening of ‘Chitrangada’, Ghosh’s seminal 2012 drama based on the story of the character...

Mumbai, Jan 23: Raima Sen, who bears a strong resemblance to her late grandmother and legendary Bengali actress Suchitra Sen, says initially filmmakers tried to portray her like her granny and it took her a long time to get out of her shadows.
"Initially, when I came into the industry, everyone would look at me in that funny way as if they were not seeing me, but someone else. When I was doing my first film 'Godmother', I'd be told to look into the camera in a certain way. It took me a while to realise they were seeing my grandmother in me," said Raima.
She feels that late filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh's "Chokher Bali".

New Delhi, Jan 15: Bengali cinema superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee, whose latest film "Jaatishwar" will get a countrywide release Friday, says Bengali films can prosper if Bangladesh opens its market for them.
The 51-year-old, who has featured in over 300 films, including "Chokher Bali" and "Dosar", considers Bangladesh a good market to sell Bengali films made in India.
"But there are political and social commitments. And due to piracy of our films there we are not able to do good business. If that market opens up we won't be less than Southern film industry," Prosenjit said here at the screening of "Jaatishwar".

Rituparno Ghosh was first acknowledged in the 90’s when he made films in Bengali with strong and sensitive subjects. His recent endeavours were with some Bollywood biggies like Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Ghosh won many national awards and his film Chokher Bali starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Raima Sen was nominated for Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival in 2003.

New Delhi, Nov 28: Akshay Kumar has found a fan in director Rituparno Ghosh who feels his acting skills go unnoticed and says he is the most underrated actor in Bollywood.

Ghosh, who has directed films like 'Chokher Bali' and 'Raincoat', feels that the 44-year-old might be known for flexible action.

As the Toronto International Film Festival approaches, it seems like a good time to reflect on the film that got away. Everyone who has been to a film festival has at least one of these, and probably even a list of them. The film that was sold out. The film that just wouldn’t fit into your schedule. The film that you wanted to take a gamble on, but which none of your friends wanted to see.
If you’re unlucky, the name of ‘the one that got away’ continues to haunt you months later, but a year after the festival there’s still no sign of it in cinemas and, after fruitless Googling, you conclude that it was never even released on DVD. It is well and truly lost: maybe for the best, as the film might not have been as good as you thought it would be. But...

The way we watch movies is changing. And no one knows how, in the not so distant future, cinema's going to be consumed -- especially those independent and art films that are increasingly unloved by the Hollywood distribution system. Multiplexes may not be the place for defiantly indie cinema, but are iPods, Xboxes, laptops and flat-screens their next best hope?

After an affair between the pair begins, Mahendra’s best friend Beharie (Tota Roy Chowdhurry) steps into the picture, complicating the situation further.
