Johnson Family Vacation was one of the most famous road comedy movies of the 2000s, especially because of its star-studded cast. With each cast member at the peak of their career, Johnson Family Vacation became a success largely due to its ensemble cast. Its eclectic cast included famous rappers, comedians, singers, actors, sex symbols, and TV hosts. Another major reason for Johnson Family Vacation‘s success was that, as a family comedy, it was relatable to several film audience demographics. In Johnson Family Vacation, Nate Johnson and his family embark on a road trip to attend his family reunion in Missouri.

It’s an interesting month ahead on Hulu, as the streamer rolls out some of the series it’s been keeping in its back pocket for the holiday season.
On December 15, the first season of Such Brave Girls will arrive. The sitcom follows a dysfunctional family – and we mean dysfunctional! – that includes real-life sisters Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. British comedian Sadler has previously written for The News Quiz, Hypothetical, and Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, but this is her first big TV project. “Everything we joke about in the show is from a place of lived experience,” she told Funny Women. “I wish I could say this is a heart-warming show about overcoming trauma, but that would be a lie. It’s about three toxic, damaged egomaniacs manipulating the world and each other for their own personal gain, vengeance and glory…just like in Little Women.” Sounds good!

In 2004, Easter fell on the second weekend of April. It featured Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” as the #1 film, ousting Guillermo del Toro’s “Hellboy.” That was no accident as part of a brilliantly executed release that achieved results far beyond anything Gibson anticipated.

John Carter, the pioneering African-American film editor whose credits spanned 1968’s Paper Lion and the original The Heartbreak Kid through Lean On Me, Barbershop and Madea’s Family Reunion, died August 13 at his home in White Plains, New York. He was 95.
Carter’s death was reported by his family in a notice in The New York Times. He was the first African-American editor to join the American Cinema Editors society.

Currently riding high on the success of Ride Along, the Jump Street films and Straight Outta Compton, Ice Cube is about to have a very happy Christmas. He's reportedly negotiated an eight-figure fee to star in Humbug, a Scrooge-riffing comedy to be directed by his Ride Along and Barbershop honcho Tim Story.Obviously taking Charles Dickens' perennial A Christmas Carol as its inspiration, Humbug will see Cube playing an ultra-capitalist real-estate mogul shown the error of his greedy ways when visited by a succession of didactic ghosts on Christmas Eve. "Any motherfucker who go around saying 'Merry Christmas' deserve a cap in they ass," he probably won't say.MGM, New Line and Disney all wanted the project, but Universal won the bidding war. Todd R. Jones and R. Richey Jones (Johnson Family Vacation, Rio) wrote the screenplay that caused all the buzz. Whether we're talking about an R-rated...

To have one giant money-losing tentpole is unfortunate. To have two starts to look careless, and that's what's happened to Taylor Kitsch. The actor, who broke out on TV's "Friday Night Lights," was seen as Hollywood's next great hope, picked out to star in two great big blockbusters with a combined cost of half-a-billion dollars. But when "John Carter" arrived in March, the film wildly underperformed, with Disney taking a hit of at least $100 million on the project. And after this weekend, it looks that his other film, "Battleship," is going to lose similar amounts.

Cinéma-vérité style found footage flicks are all the rage lately thanks to their low production costs and usually profitable returns. Combine this with the resurgence of alien flicks and you've got box office gold, right? At least that's what the people pumping things out are hoping for.
Our brothers in harm over at Bloody Disgusting are reporting that Matty Beckerman, executive producer of The Experiment and Isolation, is getting behind the camera for his directorial debut.
Currently untitled, the horror flick will be a found footage experience about aliens. Penned by Robert Alvin Lewis, the big news is that it is being produced by none other than Mike Fleiss, the man behind Shark Night 3D, Hostel, Hostel: Part II, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)! They decide to take cover in North Carolina with relatives -- only on the way their navigation goes wonky. They end up in the deep backwoods of the Appalachian Mountains where they come face to face with malevolent alien creatures. The film will be the shocking final footage of the Johnson family vacation.

Amidst a wealth of unimpressive debuts, The Expendables and Eat Pray Love held on to the top two spots at the box office this week. Vampires Suck had the best showing out of the new releases, while The Other Guys continued to play well. Overall box office was nearly identical to the same timeframe last year, when Inglourious Basterds opened to an impressive $53.7 million. The Expendables dropped 50 percent to $24.1 million for a two-week total of $72.5 million. This decline was about the same as that of last August's men-on-a-mission movie Inglourious Basterds, though Expendables' total trails Basterds by $7.7 million through the same point. Eat Pray Love finished third for the weekend, but held well enough throughout the week to move up to second place. The Julia Roberts globe-trotting drama dipped 47 percent to $18.6 million for a two-week total of $53.7 million, which was ahead of Julie & Julia's $50.3 million two-week tally last August. Vampires Suck...

Actor-rapper Shad Moss, aka Bow Wow, is focusing on acting full time.
Moss has joined the upcoming fifth season of HBO's Entourage in a recurring role, playing Charlie, a new stand-up comic client of E (Kevin Connolly).
Additionally, he has landed a role opposite Forest Whitaker and Isaiah Washington in the Weinstein Co.'s sports drama Patriots, about a high school basketball team in post-Katrina Louisiana.
"After 16 years in the music industry and six successful albums, I've decided to shift my energy to something else I'm passionate about, acting," Moss said. "I'm going to try to be the next Will Smith."
Like Moss, Smith started off as a rapper before segueing into acting.
Moss released a collaborative album last year with fellow recording star Omarion titled "Face Off". Later this year, he is set to return to the studio to work on his seventh album, titled "H.I.M. (History in Making)."
On the acting side, he recently wrapped the indie Driving Lessons and has appeared in the features Roll Bounce, "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift," Johnson Family Vacation and All About the Benjamins.
He is repped by UTA and manager Teresa Caldwell.

The Johnson Family is hitting the road again. Fox Searchlight is moving forward with a sequel to Johnson Family Vacation and has tapped Wayne Conley to write it. A follow-up to last year's low-budget comedy that earned more than $31 million domestically, Johnson Family Vacation 2 is expected to pick up where the Johnsons' holiday ended. The first film, which starred Cedric the Entertainer, followed The Johnson Family on their cross-country trek to their annual family reunion. Cedric the Entertainer is expected to reprise his role. James Earl Jones is reteaming with his Roots: The Next Generations director Georg Stanford Brown for the Hallmark Channel original movie The Reading Room. The movie centers on a widower (Jones) who opens a reading room -- a library of sorts where he teaches people how to read -- in a lower-income neighborhood to honor his wife's dying request. But he encounters problems when the room becomes a target for street thugs, who later burn it down. Room co-stars Keith Robinson (Fat Albert, NBC's American Dreams), Joanna Cassidy (HBO's Six Feet Under), Lynne Moody (ABC's General Hospital), Douglas Spain (HBO's Band of Brothers) and Gabby Soleil (Johnson Family Vacation). Brown, who is set to direct Room, will take the role of a minister in the movie, which is targeted to premiere during Thanksgiving.

Vanessa Williams is close to signing a development deal with NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution, sources said. The singer-actress has been meeting with syndicators recently as she shops herself as host of a daytime talk show, but the development deal could generate a different type of project, sources said. NBC Universal declined comment. Reps for Williams were not available at press time. Williams most recently appeared in the feature film Johnson Family Vacation opposite Cedric the Entertainer. Her film credits also include Shaft and Soul Food. Williams, who is repped by ICM, also did a stint on NBC's drama series Boomtown. Williams is one of several big names looking to host their own talk show. Others hoping to enter daytime, possibly next year, include Tom Arnold, Tyra Banks, Mo'Nique, Steve Harvey, Isaac Mizrahi and Vera Wang.

Newmarket Films' The Passion of the Christ had an astonishing resurrection at the boxoffice in North America during the Easter weekend, rising from the fifth slot a week ago to the top spot with $15.2 million. In its seventh weekend, the gross for The Passion marked an extraordinary 43% increase from a week earlier -- and with 168 fewer venues. Buena Vista's high-priced The Alamo, the weekend front-runner heading into the session, relinquished the fight with a debut in the fourth spot and a discouraging $9.1 million. Fox Searchlight's Johnson Family Vacation was the surprise hit of the session's new wide releases. The Cedric the Entertainer starrer, produced by Magic Hallway Pictures and directed by Christopher Erskin, grossed $9.4 million from 1,317 theaters to place third, taking in $11.8 million since its Wednesday opening. The theater count for Johnson was the lowest of the top 12 films and was half of the venue tally for The Alamo.

The Alamo, the expensive historical epic, went down to defeat at the boxoffice this weekend, creating an added problem for the embattled Walt Disney Co. By Monday, analysts were predicting lowered forecasts and write-downs, while Disney's share price dropped more than 2% for the day. Directed by John Lee Hancock and starring Billy Bob Thornton as Davy Crockett, the feature was eclipsed by a strong surge from Newmarket Films' The Passion of the Christ, which collected $15.2 million in its seventh weekend, and continuing strength on the part of Sony Pictures/Revolution Studios' Hellboy, which took in $10.8 million. Alamo -- originally scheduled as a prestige Christmas release but then postponed for additional postproduction work -- pulled in just $9.1 million from the 2,609 theaters in which it opened. The film, which is expected to cost the company an estimated $140 million in production and distribution outlays, had to settle for fourth place in the rankings, behind Fox Searchlight's Johnson Family Vacation, which collected $9.4 million in about half as many theaters as Alamo commanded.

Ashton Kutcher's love life is about to get even more interesting -- at least for the character he plays on the Fox hit That '70s Show. Shannon Elizabeth is set to guest star in two episodes of the comedy series with an option for another two. She will play a new love interest of Michael Kelso (Kutcher). The hit comedy from Carsey-Werner-Mandabach is returning for a sixth season in the fall. Elizabeth's gig on That '70s Show extends her relationship with Fox after she signed a talent holding deal with the network in the fall. In addition to her turn as Czech exchange student Nadia in the two American Pie movies, Elizabeth has appeared in such features as Scary Movie and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. The actress, who most recently co-starred in the CBS telefilm Crooked E: The Unshredded Truth About Enron, will next be seen in the features Love Actually, Johnson Family Vacation and Wes Craven's Cursed. Elizabeth is repped by ICM, manager Steven Fenton and attorneys Marcy Morris and Jeff Bernstein.
