Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane, Prey) will be expanding upon the Predator franchise even further with the upcoming Badlands, another fresh standalone movie.
Deadline reports that Elle Fanning (The Neon Demon) is now in talks to star!
Dan Trachtenberg is on board to co-write and direct Badlands.
The site’s report continues, “Plot details are being kept under wraps other than it featuring everyone’s favorite extraterrestrial big game hunter. It is also not known about release plans as the last film exclusively streamed on Hulu (breaking numerous viewerships records for the streamer) but given that 20th Century has been very much back in the theatrical game with films like Boogeyman and the upcoming Alien: Romulus film bowing in theaters, a theatrical premiere isn’t out of the question.”

Exclusive: After announcing that the studio would be expanding on its Predator universe earlier this year, 20th Century and Dan Trachtenberg’s next standalone pic Badlands looks to be gaining momentum with some serious star power. Sources close to Deadline say that Elle Fanning is in negotiations to star in the film with Trachtenberg directing. Trachtenberg co-wrote script with Patrick Aison.

With a couple more days left in this year's EFM our friends at FilmSharks have let us know about more deals they've secured in their time there. Two titles we've spoken about in recent months the other is the return of a classic Argentine thriller with a 4K restoration. Look back in our pages for articles about Boogeyman and The Restless Waters. What's new to us is the 4K restoration of Fabian Bielinsky's (The Aura) 2000 thriller, Nine Queens. It was his debut feature film and was heavily lauded as one of the best thrillers of its time. Sadly, Bielinsky died from a heart attack one year after his second film, The Aura, premiered to equal acclaim. His second film was a favorite of mine...

The Boogeyman still stands as one of my favorite horror films of the year. It’s a classic tale anchored by some phenomenal performances from both Sophie Thatcher and Vivien Blair. But it’s really the technical side that impresses the most, with its interesting usage of light and fantastic cinematography. So I couldn’t have been more grateful to pick director Rob Savage’s brain about all things Boogeyman. He couldn’t have been nicer, giving great insight into some of the best scenes of the movie. We talked about the possibility of a sequel (and who I want to see get their comeuppance), as well as Disney’s refusal of the usage of a toy lightsaber ended up being a blessing in disguise. This was a great chat that you won’t want to miss!

Rob Savage makes scary movies.
After smashing his way into the horror scene with the pandemic chiller "Host" and the divisive horror comedy "Dashcam," Savage made his first major studio movie earlier this year with "The Boogeyman," an adaptation of the Stephen King story of the same name. And while it was a sleeper hit at the box office, the most exciting aspect of the film was that it proved Savage could take on a much bigger movie without losing his edge. This is a frightening film, one coated in dread and literal darkness, with a story just as interested in its shattered characters as its unsettling monster. Some horror directors abandon their spark when they work on a bigger, more expensive studio project. It looks like Savage thrives.

Four (an unusually high number) recent studio theatrical releases added PVOD home availability over the last week. No question which among them scored best — “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (Disney) took the #1 slot on all charts.
Consumer options vary among the titles. “Indiana Jones” can immediately be digitally downloaded for $19.99. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” (Paramount) is $19.99 for a 48 hour rental, as is “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” (Universal). “Mutant” can be purchased for $24.99. Meanwhile, Disney released “The Boogeyman” at a $14.99 initial rental price.
The rush to open could be related to two factors — holiday viewing, but also the anticipated (but not yet confirmed) release of “Barbie” (Warner Bros.) as early as Tuesday. Presales are available on multiple sites, but none yet list a specific date.
Oddly, only “Indiana Jones” among the four new entries made all three charts. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” was released Friday,...

Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” hit shelves in 1897, and in that time there have been so many iterations of the famous vampire that to watch them all would take a lifetime. And yet filmmakers continuously try to find new ways in to a story so well-worn it’s leather. Such is the case with André Øvredal’s “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” which touts itself as Dracula’s origin story (which it really isn’t if you read the beginning and middle of Stoker’s book).
Surrounding just 10 pages of Stoker’s novel, “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” follows the crew of the titular boat who, upon arriving in Dracula’s homeland are immediately warned off by an Eastern European harbinger of doom that hints at an old-school horror movie as opposed to a movie that understands we already know Dracula like the back of our hand.

We’ve had a couple of tentpole missteps here this summer, read Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny this weekend with $60M, The Flash and Elemental; putting the running summer box office at $1.88 billion for May 1-July 2.
That’s close to -2% off from the $1.91 billion reached over the same frame last year. All these figures come from Comscore.
While the pacing isn’t terrible, the overall industry always likes to exceed year-over-year, especially after that disastrous pandemic which forced theaters to close in 2020-through early March 2021. Summer 2020 for the May 1-July 2 period only grossed $47.3M.
Next to the pre-pandemic summer 2019 which was on Viagra and steroids led by Disney/Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame (delivering $416.7M for that May 1-July 2 play period), summer 2023 is 17% behind that mid-summer which accumulated $2.27 billion.

On a weekend like this one it’s easy to bury the positive news, so let’s start with the good stuff.
Three non-franchise original films, all budgeted under $50 million, saw credible results. Sony’s “No Hard Feelings” with Jennifer Lawrence, an R-rated comedy, did around 25 percent better than pre-release estimates. Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City” (Focus) proved its opening platform weekend was no fluke with $9 million. And Celine Song’s “Past Lives” (A24), rolling out more slowly, is already at $3.5 million while in fewer than 300 theaters.
Add to those the continued strong performance of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (Sony), which is back at #1 and headed to a $375 million-$400 million domestic total (double 2018’s initial entry). Pixar’s “Elemental” saw a credible hold (-38 percent) to retain the #2 position. And “The Little Mermaid,” falling only 22 percent, is at $270 million domestic, while Disney’s “Boogeyman” (its fourth top 10 title) fell only 40 percent.

This weekend sees the release of the latest adventure in the Transformers franchise as Transformers: Rise of the Beasts hits theaters. The film is meant to reboot the series, yet still in the same universe as all previous films. As I understand it, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is a sequel to Bumblebee which also makes it a prequel to the original five Michael Bay directed movies (Bay remains a producer on this new film.)
The Transformers franchise has seen it fair share of ups and downs, beginning in 2007 when the original big screen film hit theaters and opened with $70.5 million on its way to a $319.2 million domestic finish ($709.7 worldwide). 2009 saw Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen hit screens with an opening weekend of $108.9 million and a $402.1 million domestic finish ($836.3 million worldwide.) Numbers have begun pouring in for this first weekend of June and it appears we have another Super Mario Bros. Movie situation brewing. If you recall all the way back in April, Super Mario Bros was tracking to do roughly $87 million for the weekend, yet by Sunday that number had ballooned to a record breaking $146.3 million (while also securing the worldwide record for an animated opening.) I don’t think we are going to see an explosion like that with Spider-Man but original tracking had Across The Spider-Verse at around $80 million, in our predictions from Thursday we saw the writing on the wall and put our guesstimate at around the $110 million mark. The film managed an impressive $17.35 million in Thursday previews, making it the second best preview numbers ever for an animated title just behind The Incredible’s 2’s take of $18.5 million. That film would ultimately open at $182.6 million, but...

Rob Savage's new horror film "The Boogeyman" is, like many recent horror films, all about grief. The central family of the film consists of a father (Chris Messina), his teenage daughter Sadie (Sophie Thatcher), and the eight-year-old Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair). Hanging over them all is the death of the family's matriarch, a beloved wife and mother who left an emotional hole in the house, as well as a great deal of clothes and painting supplies. Every day is grey and sad, and the family is trying to pick up the pieces as best they can. Into the bleakness comes a symbolic monster, the titular Boogeyman, who creeps out of closets and stalks humans from the shadows. The monster can imitate the voices of loved ones, and can seemingly slip through shadowy schisms in the space-time continuum, ceasing to exist when the lights are flicked on.

Host director Rob Savage makes his mainstream Hollywood debut The Boogeyman, a loose adaptation of a Stephen King short story from the co-writers of A Quiet Place. As such, it delivers some effective scares and is elevated by a trio of terrific performances, though the story itself ultimately feels a little derivative.
Yellowjackets star Sophie Thatcher plays Sadie Harper, a teenager whose family – younger sister Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair) and therapist father Will (Chris Messina) – are still grieving the tragic loss of her mother in a recent car accident. Their lives are swiftly upended when a strange man (David Dastmalchian) seemingly commits suicide in their house, after relating a dark tale to Will about a shadow monster that killed his children.

This weekend, Rob Savage (Host) brings his adaptation of Stephen King’s The Boogeyman to theaters. But for those of us who were of horror-watching age eighteen years ago (that hurts to say out loud), there was 2005’s Boogeyman… a horror film that launched an entire trilogy.
That first movie was successful enough to spawn both Boogeyman 2 and Boogeyman 3, though both sequels went straight to video here in the States. So, in honor of the upcoming The Boogeyman, let us take a look back at the Boogeymen of old. Even if they are completely and utterly unrelated in every way possible… and we cannot stress that enough.
Boogeyman (2005)
Directed by Stephen Kay, Boogeyman came to us at an interesting time for the horror genre. “Torture porn” was in full swing with Wolf Creek, Saw and Hostel all releasing. PG-13 horror competition included The Grudge, The Skeleton Key and The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

Up next from Host and Dashcam director Rob Savage is The Boogeyman, based on Stephen King’s 1973 short story, which is now playing in theaters this weekend.
Savage spoke with Bloody Disgusting about making a studio film on the heels of two smaller-scale found footage horror features, while also discussing his lessons learned from those experiences, as well as his approach to designing a PG-13, boundary-testing creature.
“I’d never really thought of myself as being somebody who would direct found footage movies, and then I ended up doing two back-to-back,” Savage says of transitioning from Dashcam to The Boogeyman. “But it took a little bit of a jolt to get back into that mode of storytelling. I was amazed by how much I was able to take from working on Host and Dashcam and work into this movie. Both of those movies were totally improvised.”

Last night at the world premiere of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse there was a huge sigh of relief from the mass of animators inside Westwood’s Regency Village Theater: the $100M budgeted sequel to the Oscar winning animated movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, was done; having completed post-production literally just ten days ago after a five-year trek to the screen which included a Covid delay due to the backlog in post-production houses. Starting today abroad, and into tomorrow in U.S./Canada, the continuing adventures of Miles Morales will see the light of day in what is expected to be a $150M global opening.
Overseas that’s a projected $60M opening, including $20M from China –which loves Spider-Man (the first animated pic grossed over $62M there)— as well as Belgium, France, Netherlands today; Australia, Brazil, Germany, Italy, Mexico, UK tomorrow, and Spain and the Prc on Friday. The first...

Above all else, The Boogeyman director Rob Savage wanted what every filmmaker longs for when adapting the work of Stephen King: his blessing. Fortunately, Savage received that and a whole lot more.
Based on King’s short story that was first published in 1973, The Boogeyman changes things up by focusing on the Harper family, as Will (Chris Messina), a therapist by trade, won’t connect with his children, Sadie (Sophie Thatcher) and Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair), in the wake of their mother’s death. The family’s disconnection then opens the door to a mysterious creature that feeds off of grief.
Written by Scott Beck, Bryan Woods and Mark Heyman, the horror movie, which was originally meant to be a Hulu release, wowed test audiences before its VFX were even finished, resulting in a theatrical release. Eventually, it even met the approval of King himself during his own screening in Maine.

One of the summer's biggest horror movies is on the horizon in the form of "The Boogeyman," which is adapted from the Stephen King story of the same name. It hails from director Rob Savage, who made waves a few years ago with his made-for-nothing found footage horror flick "Host" during the pandemic. Now, Savage is back taking on source material from a master of the genre, and it sounds like he did a damn good job of translating the material (read our review here). The reveal of the monster at the center of this story actually scared the s*** out of audiences in early screenings to such a strong degree that they actually had to re-edit the movie to accommodate the reaction.
The filmmaker recently spoke with Empire in anticipation of the film's theatrical release this weekend. Savage explained that the reveal of the titular Boogeyman worked like gangbusters in test screenings.

One of the more cleverly conceived horror films to harness the constraints of Covid lockdown, Rob Savage’s Host located its horror entirely within the domestic space. The director’s newest film, The Boogeyman, a loose adaptation of Steven King’s 1978 short story, takes a similar approach, having its titular villain function as an extension of the darkest corners in an ordinary suburban home. Except that the film, without the hook of pandemic-induced isolation, feels decidedly more generic and its jump scares more traditional, as they’re not filtered through the grainy, fragmented lens of various Zoom chat boxes.
Like the traditional form of the mythical being, the Boogeyman here often hides in closets and underneath beds. But in a twist that’s in line with so much contemporary horror, it also specifically targets “the hurt and vulnerable.” In this case, it’s 10-year-old Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair) and her 16-year-old sister,...

Disney, we know, has problems. There’s streaming, the contentious relationship with 2024 Republican presidential candidate/Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, the fates of Hulu and Searchlight, layoffs — but as the dominant film distributor for the last decade, its film slate is known as a reliable source of strength. In 2023, that’s no longer a sure thing.
In the summer of 2019, Disney films represented 43 percent of the season’s $4.3 billion domestic take. Some box-office analysts have suggested that it’s possible that we could see a $4 billion summer — up $600 million from a resurgent 2022. However, May’s shortfalls make this is unlikely — and much of that falls to Disney.
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” opened May 5; the live-action remake of “Mermaid” opened in previews today. Upcoming are “The Boogeyman” (June 9), “Elemental” (June 16), “Indiana Jones and Dial of Destiny” (June 30), and “Haunted Mansion” (July 28). It’s a slate as mainstream as a studio can muster.

Remember when actors appearing in multiple giant franchises seemed like a huge deal? Now that IP rules Hollywood, hardly anyone even bats an eye anymore when a "Star Wars" fave joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe or a DC Universe actor plays the Big Bad in the latest "Fast & Furious" movie. That's doubly the case when it comes to Disney-owned projects, between the studio's live-action and animation divisions, Pixar, the MCU, Lucasfilm, and its former Fox studios. This can lead to some amusing coincidences though, like that time Ewan McGregor went from playing sad, older Christopher Robin in the live-action "Winnie the Pooh" sequel "Christopher Robin" to playing sad, older Obi-Wan Kenobi in the live-action "Star Wars" series "Obi-Wan Kenobi."
Surprisingly, of all things it's filmmaker Rob Savage's "The Boogeyman" that marks the latest crossing of the streams among Disney properties. The upcoming horror movie, adapted from Stephen King...

Fresh voices can breathe new life into an old idea, which is why the majority of Evil Dead Rise‘s cast and crew outside of producers Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Robert Tapert are newcomers to the franchise. Production designer Nick Bassett and cinematographer Dave Garbett, however, notably worked together on Ash vs Evil Dead before being summoned back by the Necronomicon for the series’s latest installment.
Bassett’s connection to the Evil Dead extended family dates back to the mid-’90s, when Tapert was producing Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess in Auckland, New Zealand, where Bassett is based. “A big part of my film history, really, is with those guys, especially Rob,” he says, crediting Tapert with giving him his break.

Exclusive: Deadline has learned that Oscar winning filmmaker Martin Scorsese will be making an appearance at CinemaCon this year to receive the Legend of Cinema Award. The honor will happen during a sitdown lunch discussion with Scorsese following Paramount Pictures’ Thursday morning presentation on April 27.
It’s very timely as Scorsese in mid-May will have the world premiere of his Apple Original Studios and Paramount title Killers of the Flower of Moon at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, May 20 in the Grand Théâtre Lumière.
We hear that the CinemaCon lunch will be a retrospective of Scorsese’s career. It would not be shocking if we get a glimpse of Killers of the Flower Moon.
Based on David Grann’s best-selling book and written for the screen by Eric Roth and Scorsese, Killers of the Flower Moon is set in 1920s Oklahoma and depicts the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation,...

There is a go-for-broke, frenzied aura upon John Wick: Chapter 4. Even for a franchise so heavily steeped in bullets and body count, this outing finds a way to leave all its cards on the table. Seemingly fashioned with a “no bad ideas” ethos, John Wick: Chapter 4 gleefully trades in the kind of maximalist excess that characterized last year’s Babylon. In a similar fashion, not only does Chapter 4 endeavor to be a potentially final John Wick movie, it plays as an attempt at the last action movie ever made.

Boo! Did I scare you? No? Well, I’m no Boogeyman. But say, did you hear that the actual Boogeyman is coming back next year in Halloween Kills? I’ve been keeping my ear to the ground on all news scary and spooky lately and while we already brought you a terrifying hospital yesterday, today we have something a little more substantial coming right from the Og Scream Queen herself, Jamie Lee Curtis. And it’s our first look at Laurie Strode in the upcoming sequel, albeit a behind the scenes look.
Earlier today, the actress shared a photo of herself adorned in makeup from inside of a trailer, showing off just exactly how battered, bruised and beaten Laurie got during her rough-and-tumble session with Michael at the end of 2018’s Halloween. I’ve never seen the horror heroine looking so beat up before, bloody maybe, but not under the skin.

Who would’ve thought that after just three movies, John Wick would be the most lethal killer in the business? Better yet, who would’ve thought Chad Stahelski and David Leitch’s 2014 revenge thriller would spawn an entire franchise? And yet, here we are, celebrating the arrival of Chapter 3 – Parabellum and all of its kick-ass action scenes.
Because make no mistake, the third (and definitely not final) chapter in Wick’s cinematic saga is a slick, expertly crafted action movie. John Wick is a myth.
He’s a legend, essentially – the kind of hitman able to strike fear in the world’s most dangerous assassins from half-way across the world. So it’s small wonder why he’s referred to as Baba Yaga (i.e. the Boogeyman) on numerous occasions throughout the John Wick franchise.
But with Chapter 3 – Parabellum beginning to loom over the horizon, one can’t help but wonder: how many more John Wick movies can Lionsgate realistically put out into the world before audiences grow weary of the formula? Assuming they haven’t already, of course…
Nevertheless, when asked straight-up about his ideal ending for the John Wick series, Keanu Reeves waxed lyrical, and imagined a poetic finale for the world’s most dangerous hitman.
Hmm if it was Marvel. I could do both. I can die in battle and then come back. But what would I prefer?...

The ‘80s Twilight Zone had overlooked classics from some of horror's most prolific directors. We dive into the series' best episodes.
The premiere of Jordan Peele's modern take on Rod Serling's classic anthology series has put The Twilight Zone back on everybody's minds.
The two reboots of The Twilight Zone that predate Peele's current version don't have as sterling of a reputation as their predecessor, but the ‘80s Twilight Zone remains a fascinating anomaly because some pivotal horror directors like William Friedkin, Joe Dante, and Tommy Lee Wallace all helm installments. Wes Craven even leads the pack and directs a whopping seven episodes, and George R.R. Martin penned five episodes!
The series debuted on CBS in 1985 and ran for two seasons before being canceled due to lackluster ratings. A third season was commissioned with a new creative team, though it was solely for syndication purposes.

From the moment my photographer, Josh Mundy, and I pulled into the parking lot at the Wyndham Garden in Sterling Heights, Michigan, I knew that Astronomicon 2 would be considerably more sizable than its predecessor. Attendees not only didn’t have to brave a foot of snow as they did last year, but positive word of mouth and good promotion allowed for the second effort to attract droves of people hoping to meet their favorites celebrities, or to just take part in the festivities.
In addition to the factors just mentioned, I could plainly see how even more exhibitor tables were added to the lobby area that was once again home to the Ghostbusters Detroit setup, a delight to visitors of all ages. But once you ventured to the showroom floor itself, you’d find a generous helping of artists, crafters and vendors who had something to please horror, sci-fi and comic book fans.

The utterly flimsy and formulaic goosebump thriller The Possession of Hannah Grace is the latest drab and dreary take on the possession horror film genre. Strained with creepy cliche-ridden jolts and the tired copycat mentality of countless frightfests imaginable Dutch director Diederik Van Rooijen ("Daglicht") assembles a choppy exorcist vehicle that is laughably bad. Riddled with tedious manufactured scares, anemic writing, and unfocused acting The Possession of Hannah Grace elicits unintentional chuckles moreso than crafty bloody knuckles. This perverse plate of predictability has been served once too often. Along with Van Rooijen's mechanically macabre direction screenwriter Brian Sieve (the "Boogeyman" movie series) aptly creates an atmospheric, eerie universe that gives Possession its terrorizing texture and sense of corrosive confinement. You don’t know Michael Myers’ face, but you know his mask. It hasn’t changed much since we were first introduced to the slasher in the original “Halloween,” but that doesn’t mean Christopher Nelson didn’t want to put his own spin on it in David Gordon Green’s new take on John Carpenter’s enduring franchise. The makeup artist and hairstylist, who won an Oscar for his work on “Suicide Squad,” had a simple reaction to the news that “The Shape” was returning: “I have to do it.” So how did Michael Myers’ mask change in the new “Halloween”?
In a new interview with Vulture about his work on the film, which opens today, Nelson says he told producer Ryan Turek, “You have to hire me. You have to get me in touch with whoever I have to talk to. I’ll do it for nothing. I just have to do ‘Halloween.

It just wouldn’t be Halloween without Michael Myers. Ever since John Carpenter’s silent killer stalked Laurie Strode and her friends in 1978’s “Halloween,” the indestructible boogeyman has resurrected for 10 of the franchise’s 11 films, slashing his way through Haddonfield, Illinois decade after decade. Carpenter’s pulsing synthesizer and ominous piano notes are instantly recognizable, a soundtrack for the holiday and a warning for anyone who hears it — Beware of the Boogeyman.
Not every “Halloween” film is great, but the franchise continued to expand and grow over the years, as audiences demanded the iconic killer to come back from impossible odds. To be sure, there was always a touch of the supernatural to Carpenter’s original film; Michael was never really quite human. But as the mythos of Michael Myers expanded, it pulled in new family members, strange psychic links, and even ancient Druid curses.

As Tommy says to Laurie in the original 1978 film, “You can’t kill the Boogeyman.” It was never a question if he would return to the big screen… just a matter of when. Unfortunately, Halloween and Michael Myers have always been misinterpreted since the John Carpenter classic. His story has gone in directions that never lived up to the “Boogeyman” status. He once existed as part man and part dark fantasy. What he’s capable of in the original film goes beyond the suspension of belief, but it’s always grounded by John Carpenter’s masterful handling of the story. While the new 2018 film is the one sequel that comes the closest to presenting this idea, it once again falls victim to the same missteps that the later films in the series and the slasher genre as a whole embraced with open arms. The original was never about the kills and gory imagery on screen,...
