On HBO’s “Succession,” Shiv Roy, as played by Sarah Snook, has experienced a bit of a roller coaster this season as she struggled to remain in her father’s inner circle. While media baron Logan Roy has declared war on his son Kendall, who is also on the outs with his siblings, Shiv suddenly finds herself upstaged by younger brother Roman.
But then came the season’s penultimate episode on Sunday, when Roman’s creepy obsession with company CEO Geri is made public — and suddenly Shiv has a new tool at her disposal to get back in. In the episode, Shiv exchanges monumental moments with Geri, as well as her husband Tom — whom she doesn’t love but does love — and her absentee mother. It’s quite an insight into who Shiv is and how she became the way she is.

Washington, D.C. — To the delight of a standing-room-only audience that included the First Family, the Kennedy Center Honors paid hearty tribute on Sunday night to actor-singer Bette Midler, opera bass-baritone Justino Diaz, Motown founder Berry Gordy, “Saturday Night Live” honcho Lorne Michaels and singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell.
The event, last staged before a live audience in pre-covid 2020, had been conspicuously ignored by former President Donald Trump following criticism from two honorees in 2017. By contrast, President Joe Biden happily reinstated the tradition of hosting honorees at the White House before attending the production. He and First Lady Jill Biden were joined by Vice President Kamala Harris and husband Douglas Emhoff.
The wait by audiences was fully rewarded as the 44-year-old Honors program delivered a seemingly nonstop parade of A-list participants offering heartfelt tributes and rousing entertainment for the honorees gazing down from the president’s box. The show will air Dec.

In 1964 author Louise Fitzhugh introduced readers to an 11-year-old wannabe spy named Harriet M. Welch. Despite the success of the books, pop culture certainly took its time monetizing Fitzhugh’s character, with Nickelodeon only bringing Harriet to the big screen in 1996 with a more up-to-date sensibility. Now, Apple TV+ has returned to Fitzhugh’s character, and her illustrated aesthetic with their new animated series, “Harriet the Spy.”
With just five episodes in its debut season, and another five set to come out next spring, writer Will McRobb’s series isn’t so much a standard television adaptation of Fitzhugh’s novel as it is individual standalone stories. The look and feel is similar to other animated Apple fare, particularly Apple TV+’s “The Snoopy Show.” Harriet (voiced by Beanie Feldstein) lives in an indeterminate time — where cell phones don’t exist and pay phones are still a thing — with her mother,...

An official description of the pic reads: “In this snatched, short-lived moment in their young lives, and while discovering the epic sweep of the U.S., both men are deeply changed.”
“The History of Sound” is based on the eponymous Pushcart Prize-winning story by American author Ben Shattuck, which is available to read online in literary journal The Common. Held in spring 2021 at Madrid’s Fernán Gómez Theater, the exhibition Carlos Saura and Dance began with a wall panel of B&w photos the director took at the 1956 Granada Intl. Festival of Music and Dance.
In one, French prima ballerina Yvette Chauviré struts, arms held high standing in a field, recalling a Goya pastoral scene; another captures a dancer’s sculptural buttocks.
First cut’s the deepest. 65 years later, “The King of All the World” transports Carlos Saura to Mexico, and also returns him to his first professional love, the world of dance, in a fiction film which plays heir to “Carmen” and “Tango.”
Sold by Latido Films, and acquired by Eurozoom for France, the musical interweaves, moreover, two great Saura obsessions: Violence, critiqued in career highs such as 1965’s “La Caza” and 1981’s “Deprisa, Deprisa”; and the travails of women in a machista world, a focus of 1976’s “Raise Ravens” and 1983’s “Carmen.

As Australia begins to face the reality of ‘living with Covid’, there is discussion among the screen sector about how safety protocols may evolve in the new climate to include measures such as vaccine mandates for cast and crew.
Last month, production on Russell Crowe’s Poker Face had to be temporarily shut down due to a confirmed case among the crew, a scenario not seen in Australia since Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic was halted during pre-production after Tom Hanks contracted the virus.
Back then, the New York Times described Hanks as the “public face of a pandemic’s widening reach”.
The case on Crowe’s set may not have had the same global impact, but it served as a potent reminder for the local production sector about the growing possibility of direct contact with the virus.

When Halle Berry won the 2002 Best Actress Oscar for “Monster’s Ball” and made history as the first Black recipient of the award, she dedicated it to several actresses of color who came before her. Appropriately, she began by mentioning Dorothy Dandridge, whose nomination for “Carmen Jones” in 1955 made her the first Black woman to compete for the lead prize. Although Dandridge’s life ended before Berry’s began, the two performers have always shared a special connection. Indeed, less than two years before she won her Oscar, Berry took home an Emmy for stepping into Dandridge’s shoes in the TV movie “Introducing Dorothy Dandridge.”
The HBO movie was nominated for a total of nine Primetime Emmys and scored four craft awards in addition to Berry’s Best Movie/Limited Actress win. Having triumphed at 34, the actress currently ranks as the 10th youngest champion in her category after initially placing one spot higher.

‘Normal People’ star Paul Mescal will play the male lead in Benjamin Millepied’s film “Carmen,” a modern-day reimagining of one of the world’s most celebrated operas. Mescal will star opposite Melissa Barrera (“Vida”), who will play the titular role of Carmen.
Mescal replaces “Fifty Shades” star Jamie Dornan, who was previously attached to the role.
“Carmen” will mark the feature debut of Millepied, a former principal dancer from the New York City Ballet who choreographed Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan.”
The adaptation was penned by Oscar-winning screenwriter Alexander Dinelaris Jr (“Birdman”), together with Millepied and Loic Barrère.
Dimitri Rassam is financing and producing via his banner Chapter 2, a Mediawan company, together with Rosemary Blight at Goalpost Pictures, one of Australia’s most dynamic independent film companies. TF1 Studio is co-producing and handling worldwide sales.
The movie will start shooting on Jan. 18 in Australia for seven weeks. Goalpost Pictures will handle the production locally.

The Lumiere Film Festival paid homage to Greek actress, singer and politician Melina Mercouri this week with a mini-retrospective on what would have been the centenary of her birth.
The centerpiece event was a screening Thursday of “Never on Sunday,” the 1960 musical drama directed by and co-starring her regular collaborator, husband Jules Dassin, who was put on the Hollywood Blacklist for being a member of the Communist Party, and moved to Europe.
Mercouri and Dassin met at the Cannes Film Festival in 1955 when Dassin was starring in “Rififi,” and Mercouri in “Stella,” a retelling of “Carmen.” They would work together many times, most famously on “Pheadra” (1962), “Topkapi” (1964), and “10:30 P.M. Summer” (1966).
Their 1960 collaboration, “Never on Sunday,” remains their most famous partnership. They would reprise their roles of Ilya and Homer in a Broadway production, “Ilya Darling,” that opened in April 1967.

“The King of the Whole World” (“El Rey de Todo el Mundo”), a musical drama directed by “Carmen’s” Carlos Saura and lit by “Apocalypse Now” cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, has been snapped up for world sales by Latido Films.
The deal was sealed as the Toronto Festival hit its full stride on Friday. Spanish distribution rights have been acquired by distribution house Syldavia.
Starring Ana de la Reguera, Manuel García Rulfo, “The King of All the World” is fiction – so more in line with Saura’s Cannes and Bafta winning “Carmen” (1983) as well as “Tango” (1998), for which Saura has won international fame and Oscar nominations, than his latter-day, more informative documentaries.

Rose McGowan has accused The Descendants and Sideways director Alexander Payne of sexual misconduct. The actress shared her alleged experience with Payne in a chain of tweets Sunday and Monday, recounting spending time with the two-time Oscar winner when she was 15 years old.
“You sat me down & played a soft-core porn movie you directed for Showtime under a different name,” she wrote. “I still remember your apartment in Silverlake.”
McGowan, who was one of the fist women to openly speak about Harvey Weinstein’s predetory behavior that eventually led to his eventual trial and conviction on sexual assault charges, said Payne left her on a street corner after their time together.
In another tweet in response to her first, the Charmed actress posted a photo of herself at age 15 and said she isn’t bringing up the incident with intentions “to destroy.” Instead, she demanded an acknowledgement and apology from the director.

Lena Waithe and CBS’ chief creative officer David Nevins have been conducting a “great social experiment” over the past couple months, Waithe tells Variety. The findings of her preliminary research on “Twenties” — the semi-autobiographical sitcom she has been shopping for over a decade that began airing its eight-episode season on BET in March — were disappointing to say the least. Waithe anticipated the kind of buzz generated by another Lena (Dunham) after the debut of HBO’s “Girls.” She was hoping for critical acclaim and imagined herself emerging as an underdog media darling — the Phoebe Waller-Bridge of 2020. “I needed the trades to rise up like they did for ‘Fleabag,’ ” says Waithe. “Y’all stepped up and said: ‘Let’s not allow this show to be ignored.'”

Carole Lombard came to Hollywood from the Midwest at the age of 7 and was making Westerns at Fox by age 9.
The legendary star of such classics as “My Man Godfrey” and “Twentieth Century” would rise to become a high-paid performer in the middle of the Depression. Lombard was known for her tomboy style, for throwing great parties, for her marriages to megastars William Powell and Clark Gable. She was also destined to be Hollywood’s first casualty of World War II. She was only 33 and at the peak of her career.
“Carole Lombard gave her life in the service of America,” Will Hays, president of Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America, told Variety in January 1942 as the shock of Lombard’s death in a plane crash outside Las Vegas spread through the industry.
Daily Variety editor Arthur Ungar penned a page-one tribute to Lombard that led the Jan. 19, 1942, edition.

Paramount Pictures has landed the spec script “The Aliens Are Stealing Our Weed” with Gina Rodriguez attached to star, sources tell Variety.
“The Eternals” scribe Ryan Firpo penned the script. Rodriguez will also produce under her I Can and I Will banner alongside Kaz and Ryan Firpo’s Badlands. Molly Breeskin will executive produce through I Can and I Will.
The story follows Candice (Rodriguez) and Izzy, two hapless pot growers who, after their entire crop of weed inexplicably goes missing, uncover an alien conspiracy to steal the planet’s marijuana supply.
Sources say studio execs felt the story fell in line with other Paramount comedies like “Anchorman,” “Airplane!” and “Blazing Saddles,” and moved quickly to acquire it.
The project also gives Rodriguez another star vehicle in her development slate after her breakout role on the CW series “Jane the Virgin,” which won her a Golden Globe in 2015.

Sexual power plays and slut-shaming are the central themes of “Slut in a Good Way,” director Sophie Lorain’s slight but amiable story of three straight teenage girls and their romantic lives. Shot in black and white and set mostly in a retail environment, the French-Canadian film gives off a “Clerks” vibe as the trio of protagonists slack off, bitch about pay, and talk about life and love.
Catherine Léger’s story starts off in a sex shop as 17-year-old Charlotte (Marguerite Bouchard) looks for a bustier that matches one she saw in one of her boyfriend’s porn clips. What she buys doesn’t have the desired effect, though it wouldn’t have mattered what she chose: Her boyfriend tells her that he’s gay. So she gets drunk on a playground with friends Mégane (Romane Denis) and Aube (Rose Adam), lamenting that he’s “perfect” and she loves him.

Well the International Queen of Crime, Carmen Sandiego, is back in an animated series on Netflix. This time around it seems that there will be some changes to the character which I’m actually interested in seeing.
If you don’t already know, Carmen Sandiego began as an educational video game series which was released in 1985 by, the now-defunct company, Broderbund. In the game, you had to travel all over the world chasing down her henchmen to arrest them and hopefully at the end capture the nefarious Carmen Sandiego, Leader of the criminal organization V.I.L.E.
Now Netflix has developed ananimated show based on the criminal exploits of Carmen, but there seems to be some changes to the character. Let’s check out this video and see:

Maria Callas. Courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics
In many ways, American-born soprano Maria Callas’ life was operatic, with plenty of triumph and tragedy. Early in Maria By Callas, we see Maria Callas being interviewed by television host David Frost, as she describes her life being divided into two parts, a professional self she calls Callas and a personal self she calls Maria. Maria Callas was a fabulously famous opera star and icon of the mid-20th century who embodied the word diva, and also an intriguing international celebrity avidly covered by tabloid media. Maria By Callas allows the singer herself to set the record straight on personal and professional gossip.

“Maria by Callas,” an adoring profile of the Greek-American opera legend, is a one-sided documentary, using Callas’ own words in journals, letters and interview appearances to narrate her personal history. Yet this is not meant as criticism; it’s only fair that Callas’ voice finally gets heard off the stage, given how much the tabloids reinforced her image as a tempestuous diva, when the real person was much more complicated. First-time director Tom Volf plainly adores Callas — sometimes to a fault — but his film stands as a necessary corrective to decades of bad press. It’s an unalloyed tribute to her as a musical genius who gave all of herself to the public. Opera aficionados will be first in line when Sony Pictures Classics releases the film in early November, but the doc doubles as an accessible primer for the less schooled, too, with an abundance of classic recordings on the soundtrack.

Special make-up prosthetics and splatter genius Paul Hyett makes his directorial debut with a harrowing exploration into tense claustrophobia, hard-hitting action and rollercoaster suspense. In a Balkan brothel, where girls kidnapped by soldiers in war-torn zones are prostituted to the military and civilians alike, Angel (Robin Day) is the deaf mute orphan enslaved to care for the inmates. But unbeknownst to her captors, she moves between the walls and crawlspaces of the seasoning house planning her escape. Psychological horror in the nerve-shredding Alfred Hitchcock and Roman Polanski style but with an ultra-modern twist.
