This featurette takes an interesting look at the making of Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs and its implications for the Disney Company. It first looks at what was going on at the Disney Company before the feature was undertaken. Things seemed to be going smoothly for the Disney Company, but if they didn't make an attempt at feature animation, they would have to settle with being a little cartoon company. Snow White was probably the biggest gamble any movie studio took. If Snow White failed, Disney would probably be no more, and who knows where the world of entertainment be without them?
The featurette then took a look at the construction process of the film. I especially liked early footage of Walt Disney acting out the characters to give his animators an idea of what he wanted the film to look like. It was also interesting to see interviews of the legendary animators that worked on the film. I found it interesting to hear what audience reaction was to Snow White when it was first released. Animators were approached by their movie idols and congratulated for a job well done. And audience members were actually moved to tears during the movie, something unprecedented in an animation project. Snow White was truly a groundbreaking experience. From there, with Snow White being such a phenomenal success, the Disney Studios had plenty of money and room to try more new and innovative projects.
I learned all of this by watching this very informative special on the Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs Platinum Edition DVD. It was truly 45 minutes well spent.
My IMDb Rating: 9/10
