Cheng Pei-pei, the Chinese-born action film icon who starred in Ang Lee’s Oscar-nominated “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and King Hu’s seminal wuxia feature “Come Drink With Me,” has died. She was 78.
Cheng, considered a pioneer of martial arts roles for female actors, died in the San Francisco Bay Area on Wednesday. She had long suffered from a degenerative brain disease and has donated her brain to medical research.
Born in Shanghai on Jan. 6, 1946, Cheng moved to Hong Kong in 1962. With her ballet and dance training, she was soon working with the iconic Shaw Brothers studio. While her feature debut was drama film “Lovers’ Rock,” she became a major star in martial arts, action and swordplay movies following her breakout role in 1966’s “Come Drink With Me,” directed by King Hu. The film set the tone for a sequel (“Golden Swallow” in 1968), an unrealized remake by Quentin Tarantino and...

British film-maker Adrian Lyne hit paydirt with a string of erotic thrillers, but Deep Water is his first movie for 20 years. Can stars (and ex-lovers) Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas outsweat Glenn Close and Michael Douglas?
Adrian Lyne is 81 and hasn’t made a film for 20 years. The last one was Unfaithful, a top erotic thriller to add to his sweaty collection. It won an Oscar nomination for Diane Lane, who we saw flushed on a train, recalling her busy afternoon with Olivier Martinez.
So, on the surface, Lyne seems a strange choice to direct Deep Water, based on a book by Patricia Highsmith about a sterile marriage. Vic Van Allen is a small-time press publisher in New England who breeds snails in the garage. His wife, Melinda, takes a string of dim younger lovers. Her trysts are not detailed; instead, Highsmith concentrates on Vic.

Released in 1992, the erotic girls-with-guns thriller “Naked Killer”, written and produced by Wong Jing, the crowd-pleasing, prolific filmmaker and starring Chingmy Yau and Carrie Ng later reached a cult status. A decade later, he’s back with “Naked Weapon” but with a different director and filmed in English in order to attract the international audience.
The movie kicks off in Rome; a beautiful lady arrives at a hotel, goes to a room and kills a man with her bare hands after performing some sort of erotic dance moves first . More dead bodies start to pile up while she makes her escape and her car is finally blown up leaving her fatally injured. Her boss, Madame M (Almen Wong) promptly shows up and kills her in cold blood, while two CIA agents on surveillance also meet the same fate. But agent Jack Chen (Daniel Wu) manages to escape without a scratch.

After his first two features, the thriller “Fatal” and the drama “Entangled”, Korean director Lee Don-ku continues with a blend of both genres titled “Fanfare”. The movie already received critical acclaim and managed to entertain audiences at lat year’s Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival as well as Seoul Independent Film Festival, a success it truly deserves given its many qualities. The director again proves his skill at using a minimalist setting to full effect, telling a story about loyalty, betrayal and deception in a style reminiscent of Quentin Tarantino’s “Reservoir Dogs” and the gangster cinema of British filmmaker Guy Ritchie.

Netflix film Fatal Affair is a thrilling (though predictable) story of a married woman who ends up entangled with an old flame that goes horribly awry. Ellie (Nia Long), whose marriage to Marcus (Stephen Bishop) is a little on the outs, runs into college pal David (Omar Epps) at her work, and he swoops in. It's been 20 years since they've seen each other, and after almost hooking up, David can't get over Ellie. He starts stalking her, including leaving a vinyl record outside her house.
Ellie's daughter Brittany (Aubrey Cleland) spots the record on the kitchen counter and tells her mom what a good album it is, but it's clear from Ellie's face that she knows where it came from and what it means.
Later, when David breaks into the house to attack Ellie and her family, he puts on the record to play. Even though it's battered and broken,...

Fatal Affair, a Netflix thriller that's heavy on predicability but not so much on the thriller aspect, stars Nia Long as Ellie, a woman who gets caught up in an almost-romance with her college sweetheart (played by Omar Epps) 20 years later. The movie takes place in the Bay Area in California, and Ellie and her family's house is insanely gorgeous. The movie is set in Oceancrest, but we wanted to find out if this town actually exists and if the houses there truly look like this, so we did some digging.
Turns out, Oceancrest is a fictional place. In the beginning of the movie, Ellie and her husband, Marcus (Stephen Bishop), mention they sent their daughter off to school in Berkeley, CA, before moving to Oceancrest. While Ellie feels like she's so far away from her daughter, Marcus notes that Berkeley is only an hour drive away. They also mention...

We all deal with being in lockdown in different ways. Some of us by learning a musical instrument, some by writing a novel, and some by binging the nearly infinite library of new and old TV shows available on streaming services. Others, meanwhile, watch and rave about a horny and sinister thriller to have hit Netflix a few days ago.
Fatal Affair revolves around Ellie, a successful attorney who begins working with David, an old friend from college. After a few catch-up drinks, they almost hook up in a nightclub bathroom until Ellie stops things and goes back to her husband Marcus and attempts to rekindle their marriage after the two of them began to grow distant. Unfortunately, David begins stalking her and attempts to ingratiate himself into her life in increasingly demanding ways, the scenes becoming more ominous and controlling as the movie progresses and his questionable past is revealed.

the greatest assets of Peter Sullivan’s “Fatal Affair” are stars Nia Long and Omar Epps. At least they keep the feature from just looking and feeling like a limp Lifetime movie knockoff, though Sullivan himself hails from the wide world of Lifetime and Hallmark moviemaking (including no less than a dozen directorial efforts with the word “Christmas” in their titles). And yet, armed with the freedom that Netflix backing should bring — aka not needing to worry about keeping things broadcast-friendly — Sullivan and co-writer Rasheeda Garner don’t so much as bust out of the genre box as dig into it.
Opening with a double murder, the film somewhat makes good on its “fatal” promise. The “affair” part? Not so much.
Cut from the same cloth as dozens of other erotic thrillers — theatrical hits “Fatal Attraction” and “Obsessed” as well as scores of made-for-tv outings — Sullivan’s film follows a predictable pattern,...

Snk’s go-to business practice these days is to release its extensive Neo Geo library on any system that will take it for a few bucks a title. Back in the day, having an arcade-perfect Fatal Fury game at your fingertips would cost you a couple of hundred dollars. Now you can get pretty much any of them for no more than $8 if there isn’t a sale going on. God bless them for it because what a collection of games.
The Samurai Shodown series is one of Snk’s former tentpoles that fell to the wayside for years despite having a healthy amount of releases. When Snk got back in the modern fighting game groove with King of Fighters Xiv in 2016, it paved the way for the release of 2019’s Samurai Shodown, which is still getting Dlc updates as of this writing. Snk is now releasing a big compilation.

Back in the crazy heyday of Hong Kong cinema, the word ‘naked’ used to appear in film titles a lot, particularly in those produced by schlockmeister Wong Jing. Notable examples of this were cult favourites “Naked Killer” (1992) and “Naked Weapon” (2002), two films revolving around sexy, scantily clad (or indeed naked) female assassins, with plenty of blood and bullets thrown in. Forming a loose series of sorts, the two have now been joined by “Naked Soldier”, again with Wong Jing as producer, and directed by Marco Mak (“Wo Hu”), with industry legend Sammo Hung on hand, backed by the expected bevy of limber beauties, including up and coming actress Jennifer Tse (sister of Nicholas Tse, and who also recently appeared in “Hong Kong Ghost Stories”) in the title role. The film kicks off in 1980 with Sammo as Interpol agent Lung, taking a trip to the states after successfully pulling off a massive drugs bust.

Uber-producer Wong Jing returns with Naked Soldier, the third of his Naked movies, in what appears to be a decennial tradition, following on from Naked Killer in 1992 and 2002's Naked Weapon. This time Marco Mak is in the director's chair and Jennifer Tse is the drop dead gorgeous killer, who slowly discovers that she had a different life before becoming a cold-blooded assassin. I'm curious to see how well Tse shapes up as an action heroine, as the film sees her going head-to-head with the likes of Sammo Hung, Philip Ng and Andy On. If martial arts prowess proves to run in the Tse family then Naked Soldier has every chance of being a somewhat guilty pleasure. However, the first trailer showed Tse doing...

I know most people aren’t as excited about this one as I am, but that’s because they don’t appreciate a good girls-and-guns flick when they see it. Andy Sidaris is treated like a God in my house, and director Marco Mak’s “Naked Soldier” seems to exist somewhere between “Hard Ticket to Hawaii” and Corey Yuen’s “So Close”. I know this is supposed to carry on in the tradition of “Naked Weapon”, but, to me, it doesn’t have the same tone. Maybe that’s just me looking back on that flick with rose-colored glasses. Anyway, take a look at this synopsis: Interpol agent Ck Long busted a billion-dollar drug deal fifteen years ago. The cartel has avenged itself by hiring Madame Rose’s organization of assassins to kill Ck Long’s entire family. In revenge, she kills the entire family of chief investigator Ck Long.

It’s been almost one year ago to the day that we last covered director Marco Mak’s hot chick-oriented action endeavor “Naked Soldier”, another upcoming motion picture which features action choreography from Corey Yuen. The latest poster — which has been lovingly installed to the left — looks to carry on in the tradition of “Naked Weapon”, the Wong Jing-produced cheesefest starring the the gorgeous Maggie Q. Chinese movie-goers will finally have an opportunity to see the flick when it arrives in theaters this summer. In case you’ve forgotten, here’s what the flick is about: Interpol agent Ck Long busted a billion-dollar drug deal fifteen years ago. What's old is new again. Exactly two decades ago, notorious filmmaker Wong Jing produced Naked Killer, a "Girls With Guns" film that became a Hong Kong cult classic due to its graphic violence and explicit sexual nature. He then followed it up a decade later with Naked Weapon, an unrelated film but containing similar themes. Now he's at it once again in this decade with Naked Soldier and while times have changed, the level of sex and violence continues to stay the same. I’m a little late to the cinematic kung fu party on this one, my friends, but who cares? The “Naked Soldier” teaser trailer is here, ready and willing to give you the “sexy girls doing martial arts” fix you oh-so desperately crave. The film’s predecessor, Siu-Tung Ching’s 2002 actioner “Naked Weapon”, isn’t a stroke of genius by anyone’s standards, though it does feature quite a few nifty set pieces featuring the lovely Maggie Q. That alone gets it a few cool points, all of which are immediately deducted for that hideously cheesy rape sequence. “Naked Soldier”, while Maggie-less, looks like it’s going to be an absolute blast. With Corey Yuen handling the action duties, it better be. Here’s your plot synopsis: Interpol agent Ck Long busted a billion-dollar drug deal fifteen years ago. “What Women Want” is a Chinese remake of the 2000 Hollywood romantic comedy of the same name, with megastars Andy Lau and Gong Li taking the roles played by Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt in the original. The film, one of the few to actually market itself as an Eastern remake, was fittingly written and directed by a Chinese American in Chen Daming, who previously helmed the comedy “One Foot off the Ground” and the recent Chinese animation “The Dreams of Jinsha”. While the film obviously belongs to its leading couple, it also boasts a photogenic supporting cast that includes former idol Benny Chen (“Just Call Me Nobody”), TV actress Yuan Li (“The Bronze Teeth”), Hu Jing (“Drink Drank Drunk”), Anya (“Naked Weapon”), and American actor Russell Wong (“The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”). Shifting the action from Chicago to Beijing, the film follows the plot of the original pretty closely,...

When it was first announced that the CW network were planning yet another TV adaptation of Nikita I scoffed at the prospect. Then it was announced that Maggie Q (Naked Weapon) was starring as Nikita, and that the show was actually a new take on the oft-repeated tale – The CW’s Nikita sees a new operative being trained to replace the original one after she goes rogue – suddenly my interest was peaked.
Now comes this action-packed trailer that has me gagging to see the series:
Previous Nikita’s were played by Ana Parillaud (Luc Besson’s La Femme Nikita), Bridget Fonda (the American remake Point of No Return) and Peta Wilson (the USA series).
Nikita is set to air on the CW Thursday nights at 9pm.

Although many viewers might quite reasonably groan at the thought of yet another Warring States period swordsman epic, “The Warrior and the Wolf” is certainly a film which should give pause for thought, thanks to the presence of director Tian Zhuangzhuang. Indeed, the fifth generation helmer is somewhat of an unexpected choice for the genre, having previously been responsible for acclaimed dramas such as “Springtime in a Small Town” and “The Go Master”. If the thought of such a humanistic and artistically minded director turning his hand to the form wasn’t enough, the film also features an intriguing pan-Asian cast headed by Japanese actor Odagiri Joe (recently in Kore-eda Hirokazu’s “Air Doll” and who also starred in Korean auteur Kim Ki Duk’s excellent “Breath”) and Maggie Q (who has risen from the likes of Wong Jing’s “Naked Weapon” to Hollywood hits such as “Die Hard 4.0”). Based...

After making me sad that I own eyeballs yesterday with the trailer for Legion, I'm slightly uplifted again for a Paul-Bettany-battling-a-lot-of-monsters project. The reason for the tiny improvement in my emotional state is that action star Maggie Q is joining the cast for Priest. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Q is going to be a bad ass vampire killing machine that teams up with Bettany's priestly character in the fight against the dark villains that roam the wild west. Maggie Q is awesome. I loved her in Live Free or Die Hard and Mission Impossible III despite neither movie being all that awesome. She brings a very dark, sophisticated look to her ass-kickery, and I have no doubt that she'll play well against Bettany's cold-shoulder school of acting. And if you haven't seen her in Naked Weapon, you owe it to yourself to search it out. Especially if you have no sense of decency. Which...

Kill Bill star and Kung Fu legend David Carradine returns to the small screen in two feature length productions directed by Philip Spink, forgive the pun but Kung Fu fanatics will probably get a real kick out of the 72 year olds return to martial arts television, the rest of the world will just have to suffer. The show reunites Carradine with Daryl Hannah, not to mention a fine array of Eastern talent. Most notably Pei-pei Cheng of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon fame and the welcome return of Anya (Naked Weapon), after a near fatal car accident which has left her scarred for life. Though it has to be said the scars are barely visible now and she still looks absolutely stunning. Welcome back Anya.
