May 6th marks the ten-year anniversary of the Friends series finale. That night, over 52 million people tuned in to find out how it would all end. Would Ross finally get together with Rachel? Would female characters ever stop moving to Paris when their shows drew to a close? Who actually lived in Rachel and Monica’s apartment? Would coffee ever taste the same again? While we got most of those answers, we were left with a bitter taste in our mouths. Our best friends of the past 10 years left us feeling lonely. Knowing it was time for us to change the channel, the networks rushed to fill the void. NBC tossed out a few post-Friends options that failed to capture our hearts while ABC, Fox and CBS attempted to mix up the template with a few different offerings. Sadly most of them failed (and failed badly). While How I Met Your Mother...

Haven Season 4 is coming to wrap itself around us in all its creepy mysterious gorgeous Nova Scotia-posing-as-New England goodness, and I am So Ready. They’ve even made it easy to remember the premiere date: Friday the 13th of next month.
I’m thrilled that Colin Ferguson (Eureka) is joining as a recurring guest star, and now we have news of two others. I hope they all fare better than last year’s recurring guest star. You know, the psychologist? Yowie.
With so many shows, new characters can be disruptive, but the casting in this series has always been impeccable, and seamless with the writing and the collective excellence of the show. And no matter how hard they try, and sometimes they do try, guest stars seem to never be able to permanently break up my favorite love/buddy triangle of Audrey, Nathan, and Duke.
But wait til you see who Christian Camargo (Dexter) plays…...

Excellent, some Haven news! Production has begun for Season 4 of this absolutely terrific show, up in gorgeous Halifax. Everyone I’ve talked with who’s involved in the show’s production talks about the big part the location plays in the series, and I agree. We also have news that the star of another Syfy show that featured an “interesting” town will be joining the Haven community:
Yes Colin Ferguson, Eureka‘s Sheriff Jack Carter, will be showing up in our favorite creepy town. Here are the details, along with a head’s up about where we’ll be when the show returns:

In a surprising development, Lifetime has cancelled Drop Dead Diva. Deadline speculates, that the decision might have come out of a desire to pursue more "edgy" fare at Lifetime — you know, like The Client List. Wait, does "edgy" mean getting hot male guest-stars undressed under flimsy excuses? That's a pretty compelling argument for Lifetime getting more "edgy." Too bad we won't find out where Drop Dead Diva would go from where it left off.
TNT has ordered a pilot starring Rebecca Romijn and Jon Tenney of The Closer and Major Crimes. King & Maxwell will focus on a pair of former Secret Service agents who become private investigators.
Mad Men and Desperate Housewives alum Mark Moses will appear on Blue Bloods, TV Guide reports. Moses will play a bigoted talk radio host who challenges the police's commitment to protecting the first amendment.

Since the mid-1980s, NBC has always had at least two sitcom footholds during their Must See Thursday offerings, with shows like: "The Cosby Show," "Family Ties" "Different Strokes," "Mad About You," "Night Court," "Cheers," "Taxi," "Seinfeld," "Frasier," "Friends," and -- for the last few years -- "The Office" and "30 Rock." But the network has often struggled to fill in those gaps. launching a number of mediocre to putrid sitcoms in those holes. Yet, up until "Friends" left the air, and before the prevalence of DVRs, NBC had such a stronghold on on the night, that many of those sitcoms managed top ten ratings. Few probably remember the Christina Applegate sitcom, Jesse," for instance, but it ran for two years. In its first year, it was the sixth-highest rated show of 1998 -1999, receiving about two-and-a-half times more viewers than "The Office" does today (or five times the viewers of "Community.

It’s lucky 13 for the Boston Underground Film Festival as they celebrate their raucous 13th annual edition this year. Jeff Zucker's announcement that he's leaving NBC Universal when the company's merger with Comcast is finished brought some pangs of nostalgia. Because we won't have Zucker to kick around anymore.
Zucker was the president of NBC Entertainment from 2001-04 -- he had been the executive producer of "Today" prior to that -- then moved up the executive ladder from there before becoming CEO of NBC Universal in late 2007. Since then, he hasn't had as much of a hand in the day-to-day running of NBC, so most of his programming legacy comes from before then. But he left a lot of things to remember him by -- here are a few mementos from the Zucker Era.
"Fear Factor." In 2001, reality was still a relatively new concept for the broadcast networks. "Survivor" was only a year old, "American Idol" and "The Bachelor" didn't yet exist. NBC's first big entry into the genre was "Fear Factor,...

As the title character in "Better Off Ted," an off-the-beaten-path office comedy in its second season on ABC, Jay Harrington feels an added level of pressure. "Nobody is making me feel this way," he emphasizes. "But if we're not being watched as much I may hope, I will feel a certain responsibility." Still, after more than a decade in the business, he says the lead role on a network program is the most "fun and challenging" gig of his career as well as a major step for the 38-year-old Wellesley, Mass., native—perhaps best known for his recurring roles as the temperamental jerk Dr. Wyatt Lockhart on "Private Practice" and Teri Hatcher's youthful love interest on "Desperate Housewives." But starring on "Better Off Ted" presents a new set of challenges, not least his 12-hour-a-day, five-day-per-week schedule. "Look, I'm not working as a coal miner or in an auto plant,...

Which other actors are on TV's Most Wanted (and Least Lucky) List? Our top offenders: • Jason Gedrick: Truly impressive versatility in terms of the number of networks he's failed on. If you haven’t had a chance to catch Better Off Ted yet, I really suggest you get acquainted with it. New episodes are returning for a summer run, and the show is slated in ABC’s fall schedule. You can catch up on what you’ve missed at ABC’s Better Off Ted page here, and new episodes start this coming Tuesday 6/23. Catch my review of the show here. I managed to catch that upcoming episode, and it’s brilliantly Ted. The crew of the show play out two different versions of getting a little too friendly with your boss, and when world’s collide it isn’t often a pretty picture. If you haven’t caught him as Ted yet, you may know Jay Harrington from a recent run on Private Practice. Following on the heels of Stargate Sg-1 and Stargate Atlantis, the latest Stargate series — Stargate Universe, or Sgu — will include the franchise's first lesbian cast member: political attaché Camille Wray, played by veteran Chinese-American actress Ming-Na Wen (pictured, right).
The franchise began with the 1994 feature film Stargate, and has since spawned three live-action series, an animated series (Stargate Infinity), video games (Stargate Worlds), novels, and comics.
The Stargate universe is one in which soldiers and scientists from contemporary Earth interact with alien races possessing far superior technology via a top-secret Stargate (pictured below) that utilizes wormholes to quickly transport people and objects to cosmic locations far away.
Here's the official description of the new series from Sci Fi channel's press release about the series in February:
Edgier and younger in tone, Sgu will take the franchise in a dynamic new direction, appealing to longtime Stargate fans and first-time viewers alike.

Better Off Ted is a new satirical comedy on ABC which premieres Wednesday March 18th at 8:30/7:30c. Ted works in R&D at a multinational company, and it's his job to actualize whatever crazy idea his boss, Veronica can come up with. His company, Veridian Dynamics, is the ultimate in giant corporation gone wrong, and Ted has to balance his incredibly cool job against the not-so-stellar moral outlook of the company. Jay Harrington plays the titular Ted, and it's a role he works well in. You may remember Jay from a few episodes of Desperate Housewives, or a few episodes of Private Practice, or even as Steve in the doomed American version of Coupling. Better Off Ted is a fast-paced, black-ish comedy, with Ted spending a good bit of time talking to the camera, and Jay Harrington has a decided likability that sucks you into the show. Though...

Next month, a batch of spinoff "Thursday Night Live" specials will zero in on the election; bet on "SNL" alum Tina Fey returning to mimic her new doppelganger, Gop vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin.

"Survivor" vs. "Hole in the Wall"
CBS' "Survivor" will be challenged by the Japanese-inspired "Hole," which could benefit from the success of ABC's similar "Wipeout.
Tuesday, Sept. 9
Fox's "Fringe" airs "remote-free"
The highly anticipated new J.J. Abrams drama is Fox's experiment in "remote-free TV," running with about half the usual number of ads per episode. That could please viewers and advertisers alike. If not, the network will shrug, confident that "American Idol" will still kick everybody's butt come January.

The import-export business between TV producers in the United States and the United Kingdom has never been more robust. But the same can't be said for the finished product of U.S. adaptations of British scripted series, particularly comedies. NBC's quick cancellation of its heavily touted redo of the British hit Coupling has sparked a heated debate over format transfers and even prompted veteran British producer Beryl Vertue to rail against "interference" by NBC in Coupling's brief U.S. outing. Coupling, which premiered Sept. 25 and was canceled by the end of October, was not given sufficient chance to grow on NBC, Vertue said.

Baseball is long gone, the new Fox schedule has run into trouble, and NBC is back atop the ratings for the viewers most-sought by advertisers, just in time for the November sweep. After tinkering with its lineup -- in particular, canceling the low-rated Coupling -- the peacock dominated the week ending Nov. 2 in the key 18-49 demographic, led by a revived ER, the week's No. 1 show. On Sunday, the anniversary special CBS at 75 rounded up 18.2 million total viewers, helping the eye to another weekly win in that category. Continuing year-to-year broadcast erosion in 18-49 has made for a tight demo race among the four major networks. But at this point, NBC looks poised to run away with the sweep, which began Thursday -- especially given Fox's problems with its new series, including the just-canceled Skin and the unspectacular Sunday premiere for the critically praised comedy Arrested Development.

Fans of Fox's comedy The Bernie Mac Show will have to wait until the end of the November sweep for the return of the edgy family comedy. Meanwhile, NBC's freshman comedy Coupling reached the point of no return as the network officially canceled the racy sitcom Friday. Regency TV/20th Century Fox TV's Bernie Mac, originally slated in the Wednesday 9 p.m. slot, was moved in September to the plum post-Simpsons Sunday 8:30 p.m. period, with the third season of the comedy starring Mac scheduled to launch Sunday (HR 9/30). Now, the network will run repeats of The Simpsons in the 8:30 p.m. slot for the four weeks of the sweep, pushing the season premiere of Bernie Mac to Nov. 30. To avoid Simpsons overload on the West Coast, the Simpsons repeat scheduled to run during the sweep at 7 p.m. will be replaced by a repeat of King of the Hill leading into a King of the Hill original at 7:30 p.m. On the East Coast, the Sunday 7-7:30 p.m. half-hour is preempted for football coverage.

CBS and NBC split the spoils on the first night of the November sweep. CBS had a good night with Survivor: Pearl Islands -- it topped NBC's Friends in total viewers for the first time this season -- while CSI: Crime Scene Investigation was far and away the most-watched program of the night. The best news for NBC was the revival of ER's demographic fortunes at 10 p.m. after it took a big hit last week with a weak lead-in from the now-benched Coupling.

The future looks grim for Coupling after the NBC sitcom helped drive ER to record-low numbers Thursday. The racy freshman sitcom based on the BBC hit was billed as a key addition to NBC's powerhouse comedy lineup and even considered a possible successor to Friends. But Coupling's poor performance in the 9:30 p.m. slot Thursday assisted CBS in reaching a ratings watershed. For the first time since the advent of Nielsen people meters in 1987, CBS eked out a win -- albeit a narrow one -- on a Thursday in the key 18-49 demographic with regularly scheduled programming. NBC said no official decision had been made on the fate of Coupling, and the series was said to remain in production late Friday afternoon. But the network has grown alarmed at the show's adverse impact on ER and had already cut its presence during the November sweep. Sources do not expect the Reveille/NBC Studios-produced sitcom to return to the schedule anytime soon. Coupling has aired four episodes so far.

There's no Michael Jackson special yet, but with less than three weeks until the November sweep, networks are again jockeying over scheduling moves. And rivals are paying special attention to ratings leader NBC, which is contending with some weak spots in its fall lineup. A combination of "supersized" comedies and extra Fear Factor episodes, along with previously announced specials, will likely spell at least some pre-emptions for the new peacock comedies Coupling, Whoopi and Happy Family. While NBC says it's pleased with all three shows, none looks poised to emerge as a breakout hit. Meanwhile, sources say ABC is expected to book the special one-hour return of 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter -- the first minus star John Ritter, who died last month -- for either Nov. 4 or the following week. The sitcom saw healthy ratings for the first three episodes this season, which were shot before Ritter's death. That track record, plus curiosity over how the writers will deal with the death of the Ritter character, would seem to ensure a large rating for the show's return.

There are few clues in the new NBC sitcom Coupling premiering tonight to tell you that the show is virtually a carbon copy, word for word, line for line, of one of Britain's most popular sitcoms. With only minor changes, the American cast of the cheeky new comedy have worked from the same scripts that their British counterparts worked from. The early episodes of the U.S. show follow the British script so closely that one features three American guys swigging down very British looking pints of ale. But in the main, the creative teams on both sides of the Atlantic say the trip across the pond has allowed the U.S. actors to step easily into the born-in Britain characters. Steven Moffat, British writer of the BBC show, confessed to being "startled" when he saw how similar the shows are. "It's an eerie experience and just weird to be involved in a remake of something that you did only a short time before," he added.

Casting veteran Dawn Steinberg has been appointed head of casting at Sony Pictures Television. Steinberg will oversee all casting on Sony's series and longform TV productions for network, cable and first-run syndication in her role as senior vp talent and casting. She reports to Russ Krasnoff, SPT's president of programming and production. Steinberg succeeds Mark Saks, who has left SPT after a two-year stint as senior vp casting. "Throughout her career, Dawn has displayed both a sharp eye and discriminating taste when it comes to finding talent," Krasnoff said. "She's not afraid to make bold choices, and the diverse and original casts she's put together reflect that spirit." Steinberg has spent the past two years working as a consultant to NBC Studios, where she helped assemble the casts for the Peabody-winning drama Boomtown, featuring Donnie Walhberg and Mykelti Williamson, and the peacock's upcoming comedies Happy Family and Coupling. Before that, Steinberg served stints as head of casting at Artists Television Group and at Big Ticket Television. At Big Ticket, Steinberg's casting discoveries included Mo'Nique, the star of the UPN sitcom The Parkers. A native of New York, Steinberg began her career casting off-Broadway productions.
NBC's raunchy new sitcom Coupling is about to become the poster child for the globalism of television production. The U.S. series is based on a popular British comedy, but many European TV buyers at the Los Angeles Screenings this week want to take home the American version for their Euro viewers. Some foreign TV buyers at the Screenings this week went so far as to state that they would actually prefer to air the American version that is being distributed worldwide by Universal. Many station executives pointed to the fact that the U.S. pilot from Ben Silverman's Reveille and NBC Studios used the actual script from one of the British episodes. "But I would prefer the U.S. version for our audience," said Nina Flemming, head of acquisitions for TV Norge. "It is more glossy and just feels as though it has a lot more production value," Said Dermot Horan, head of Irish state television RTE, "We saw the U.S. version of 'Coupling' and liked it better (than the original BBC hit). It's upbeat and better cast. The script's pretty much the same (as the British version), but it had everybody laughing, and I do think it has potential for us."...

NEW YORK -- The cast of Will & Grace sang a pop-rock medley that ended with Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus" on Monday at the Metropolitan Opera House, when who should walk onstage but ... Jeff Zucker. A grandiose introduction? Perhaps, but the NBC Entertainment president was pulling the levers on last-minute surprises that kept media insiders buzzing as the peacock kicked off broadcasters' week of fall-schedule presentations for buyers and reporters. Zucker's gutsiest move, foreseen by practically no one, was switching Law & Order: Special Victims Unit from its successful 10 p.m. Friday berth to 10 p.m. Tuesday, where NBC hopes it can help anchor a night that more or less flopped for the network this season. Another feint involved a new comedy starring Saturday Night Live's Tracy Morgan. Many industry insiders expected the peacock to pair that show in the 8-9 p.m. Tuesday slot with Whoopi, a freshman sitcom starring Whoopi Goldberg. Instead, NBC matched Whoopi with Happy Family, a half-hour starring John Larroquette and Christine Baranski. Zucker told reporters that Morgan's show, which received a midseason order, will air "sometime this fall or winter." NBC's third new comedy, Coupling -- based on a British hit of the same name -- is scheduled at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, following Will. The peacock also picked up three new dramas: Las Vegas, a casino thriller starring James Caan, will air at 9 p.m. Monday; the romantic one-hour Miss Match, starring Alicia Silverstone, is set for 8 p.m. Friday; and The Lyon's Den, a legal drama starring Rob Lowe, moves into Boomtown's former 10 p.m. Sunday slot.

The network has given 13-episode orders to the untitled Tracy Morgan and Whoopi Goldberg comedies, from Carsey-Werner-Mandabach and NBC Studios; the Reveille/NBC Studios adaptation of the BBC ensemble comedy Coupling; NBC Studios/DreamWorks TV's untitled Las Vegas drama starring James Caan; 20th Century Fox TV/Brad Grey TV's ensemble legal drama with Rob Lowe; and 20th TV/Imagine TV's dramedy Miss/Match toplined by Alicia Silverstone.

The pilot pickup rumor mill went into overdrive Tuesday as industry insiders kept close tabs on projects emerging as hot contenders for NBC, which kicks off next week's parade of fall schedule unveilings in New York on Monday. Sources said the comedies looking good at the peacock include a pair of untitled projects from Carsey-Werner-Mandabach and NBC Studios -- one starring Saturday Night Live alumnus Tracy Morgan and the other featuring Whoopi Goldberg -- quite possibly for a Tuesday comedy block that would lead into Dateline. NBC Studios' John Larroquette-Christine Baranski starrer Happy Family also has strong pickup buzz, as do NBC Studios' Stuck in the Middle With You, featuring Annie Potts and Timothy Busfield as the heads of a typically harried middle-class family, and Coupling, a sexy ensemble comedy about six thirtysomething friends from NBC Studios and Reveille. On the drama side, Darren Star's dramedy Miss/Match, starring Alicia Silverstone as a high-end professional matchmaker, from 20th Century Fox and Imagine TV, continues to look like a shoo-in; sources said producers were already canvassing the town for writing staffers. Rob Lowe, late of The West Wing, looks like a strong contender to re-emerge as the star of 20th TV/Brad Grey TV's The Lyon's Den, an ensemble drama set at a tony New York law firm. NBC Studios/DreamWorks TV's untitled Las Vegas project with James Caan is also said to have solid shot at a time slot next season. Meanwhile, high-profile NBC projects that once had a lot of heat but seem to be cooling off include the Heather Locklear vehicle Once Around the Park. The pilot is said to have tested poorly, though one source said the network still hoped to redevelop the project or develop another property with Locklear. The Tom Selleck starrer Touch 'Em all McCall also appears to be dead. NBC reps stressed Tuesday that no formal pickup or scheduling decisions had been made on any pilot projects.
Emmy winner Christine Baranski is set to star opposite John Larroquette in NBC's comedy pilot Happy Family. Meanwhile, Matthew Modine and Sasha Alexander are set and Enrico Colantoni is in negotiations to play the leads in the CBS drama pilot Expert Witness. In pilot recasting news, Christopher Moynihan has joined the cast of NBC's comedy Coupling.
