Jeff Balsmeyer’s second feature, Ingenious, may be about a couple of down on their luck inventors and salesmen, but you can’t help but get the sense that it says a lot about indie film at the same time. It takes a certain amount of drive, and love of one’s craft to dedicate so much to something that doesn’t always deliver rewards. And in Ingenious, you can feel that drive and love, both in front of the camera, and behind it.
Ingenious tells the true story of two best friends Matt (Dallas Roberts) and Sam (Jeremy Renner), two novelty item inventors who are at the very bottom of rock bottom. Their current line of watches inspired by dogs, golf, and the lottery just aren’t taking off as much as they hoped and they’re at the end of their line.

It has been confirmed that the perennially dishevelled Welsh actor Rhys Ifans has been cast as the main villain in Marc Webb's Spider-Man reboot. The studio, however, hasn't revealed which villain he'll be playing but the rumour-mill has suggested Green Goblin and Venom. While Ifans has a considerable list of screen credits to his name, he is perhaps most remembered for the clutch of quirky characters he's played in films such as Notting Hill, Danny Deckchair and The Boat That Rocked. Most recently, Ifans was impressive as Ben Stiller's sober mate in Greenberg. Ifans joins the cast which already includes Andrew Garfield (Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus, The Social Network) as Peter Parker and the recently cast Emma Stone who will play his love interest Gwen Stacy.

Yet another casting has been announced by Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures for their much-buzzed and immediate reboot of the Spider-Man franchise. This time around, it's been revealed who will be playing the crucial villain role.
Sony announced that Rhys Ifans will be their villain in the new movie, facing off against Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield), and his love interest Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). The only thing about the announcement is that the studio has decided to keep exactly who Ifans will be playing a big secret. This should go over well with fans who are dying to know who the big baddie in this new take on the Marvel comic book superhero would be.
Ifans is best known for his quirky supporting roles. He first stood out to most as the often oblivious slob and Hugh Grant flatmate in the romantic comedy, Notting Hill. Since then he's stood out in films like The Replacements,...

Just last week it was announced that the lovely Emma Stone was set to play Gwen Stacy, the romantic interest of a one Peter Parker, and now we know who is going to be playing the other crucial role in Spider-Man's (Andrew Garfield) life. Columbia Pictures have just sent out a press release announcing that director Marc Webb and company have given the villain role in their 'Spider-Man' reboot to Welsh actor Rhys Ifans. Unfortunately that is about all we know at this point, as Sony are staying tight lipped as to who that actual villain will be.
Yet while we may not know if Ifans will be playing Venom, Lizard or any of the other baddies rumored for the film, we might as well get a little refresher about what we know of Ifans as an actor. He's been a working actor for well over a decade,...

While Welsh actor Rhys Ifans has a considerable list of screen credits to his name, he is perhaps most remembered for the clutch of quirky characters he's played including his role as Hugh Grant's endearing flatmate Spike in Notting Hill, the loveable titular character in Danny Deckchair, a DJ in the UK comedy The Boat That Rocked and an ex-rocker in Noah Baumbach's recent Greenberg. Playing the film's resident villain in Nanny McPhee & the Big Bang represented a departure from his previous roles and Ifans wanted to make sure that his character wasn't your typical evil bad guy.

Coming to Jonathan Ross' Friday night show on BBC to talk about his upcoming film "The Boat That Rocked", Rhys Ifans ended up revealing his involvement in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows". The 40-year-old actor confirmed that he has been cast in the adaptation of "Harry Potter" seventh book.
During his appearance on the TV show, Ifans told Ross that a couple of weeks ago while he was filming "Mr. Nice" in Spain, he has been fitted for his costume in the latest installment of the "Harry Potter" series. While the Robert Reston of "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" did not mention which part he will be starring as, The Leaky Cauldron reported that he will be taking the role of Xenophilius "Xeno" Lovegood, who is known to be Luna Lovegood's father and the editor-in-chief of The Quibbler.

Danny Deckchair
Rhys Ifans is a character actor par excellence, a skilled scene-stealer who has lifted from the likes of Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts (Notting Hill), Tim Robbins (Human Nature), Kevin Spacey (The Shipping News) and Adam Sandler (Little Nicky). In the warm, sparkling character comedy Danny Deckchair, the Welsh actor moves to center stage, but it has taken a trip to Australia to get him there.
With its engaging performances, left-of-center humor, winning sense of warmth and the presence of Ifans, Danny Deckchair may just float its way to some low-key art house success.
A fable-like quality is often difficult to catch, but debut feature director Jeff Balsmeyer (an American living in Sydney) has done just that. While the town of Clarence is grounded in reality, there's just enough magic about it to suggest that this all might be a figment of Danny's imagination.
As well as capturing the elusive glow of magic realism, Balsmeyer also succeeds in drawing fine performances out of his cast. Ifans is all charm and sturdy sweetness as Danny, while Otto (about as far away from her icily dignified turn in "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" as you could get) is the perfect foil, equally sweet but with an earthier verve. Clarke is superb as Trudy, giving her character enough levels to make her so much more interesting than the garden-variety villain that she could have been.
The only real problem with Danny Deckchair is that writer-director Balsmeyer fails to set up the changes that Danny will undergo when he arrives in Clarence. We are shown nothing of his real potential in the early stages of the film, so his sudden transformation (where he has advice for everyone and even moves into small-town politics) comes out of nowhere.

Otto boards flight on Fox's 'Phoenix' redo
Lord of the Rings veteran Miranda Otto is in negotiations to star opposite Dennis Quaid in the 20th Century Fox remake of The Flight of the Phoenix. Otto will play a geologist in the action thriller, which is being directed by John Moore. The original 1965 Phoenix revolved around a plane crash in a North African sandstorm and the efforts of the crew to build a plane from the wreckage. The updated version represents a reinvention of the original, with contemporary circumstances set in the Mongolian desert. John Davis, Bill Aldrich and Alex Blum are producing Phoenix, while Fox's Emma Watts is overseeing the project for division topper Hutch Parker. Otto, who most recently appeared in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, returns to the big screen Dec. 17 in the final installment of the Rings trilogy, The Return of the King. She also appears in the upcoming comedy Danny Deckchair. Otto is repped by UTA, Management 360 and Sydney-based Shanahan Management.

'Danny' floats in Lions Gate skies
Lions Gate Films has acquired North American rights to the Australian romantic comedy Danny Deckchair from Crusader Entertainment. Written and directed by Jeff Balsmeyer, Danny tells the story of a cement truck driver who, after a fight with his girlfriend, becomes so desperate to escape his drab suburban existence that he persuades his friends to tie helium balloons to his favorite garden chair. To everyone's amazement, he lifts off into the skies and a thunderstorm blows him clean off the map to a faraway town. While the media back home goes crazy with the story of his disappearance, Danny gets to reinvent himself and in the process discovers a renewed zest for life. The film stars Rhys Ifans, Miranda Otto and Justine Clarke. It was produced by Andrew Mason (The Matrix Reloaded) and co-produced by Lizzie Bryant. Executive producers include Howard Baldwin, Karen Baldwin, William J. Immerman and Carol Hughes. Lions Gate plans a March release.
