Unpopular opinion of the week: Monday’s Sleepy Hollow could have benefitted from more Katrina.
I know. For at least half the season, I’ve been advocating reduced screen time for the witch — or, at least, a purpose for her that’s more than wringing of hands and botching of spells.
But after the ending to last week’s episode, in which it appeared that Red had accidentally catapaulted over to the dark side, I really wanted to see what Mrs. Crane was up to.

We’re back with another edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting recent independent horror news sent our way. Today’s feature includes photos from Chainsaw Sally: The Animated Series, the first two chapters from the novel Survivor Max, the uncensored trailer for Smothered with Bill Moseley and Kane Hodder, Camp Dread DVD release details, and much more:
First Two Chapters of Survivor Max: “Meet Max, an 11-year old boy who was stuck in another boring day at school when the lock down alarm went off. They were under quarantine. He escaped and made it home, only to discover he’d have to find a way to survive this plague alone. Little did he know his father, his only parent, was among the infected. Slow-moving and non-thinking, the “lamebrains” swarmed his apartment complex, hunting survivors to feed their insatiable hunger for living flesh. Now he must apply his Porcupine...

Tabloid complaints about the BBC can descend into the absurd, such as moans about migrant birds featuring on Radio 4
✒The select committee that interviewed the chairman and director general of the BBC this week had trawled through all the tabloid allegations against Auntie over the past few months. It seems there is nothing the Beeb can get right. Some matters are serious, such as Jimmy Savile and the overpayment of departing staff. Others are incredibly trivial, such as the exact length of cleavage shown by female presenters.
But they all get full coverage in the anti-bbc press, including this week the allegation that some of the birds in the popular Tweet of the Day feature on Radio 4 are not actually British, but migrants who stop here on their way to somewhere else.
You can almost write the stories. They come over here, some of them from outside the EU, and...

The Ann Arbor Film Festival, having survived their half-a-century blowout in 2012, is back with another rip-roarin’ 51st edition in 2013, which will run from March 19-24, screening a mind-boggling amount of experimental short films and a few features.
Highlights of the fest include:
Special presentations by this year’s jurors, including Marcin Gizycki round-up of Polish animation from the 1950s to the present; Laida Lertxundi’s selection of some of her films as well as her biggest influences; and Kevin Jerome Everson’s mini-retrospective of his own films.
There’s also special tributes to Pat O’Neill, including a retrospective of his short films from the ’70s to the present as well as a screening of his 1989 35mm experimental epic Water and Power; Suzan Pitt, with selections of short films from her career; and a screening of Ken Burns’ latest doc The Central Park Five, co-directed with his daughter Sarah Burns and son-in-law David McMahon,...

The Comic-Con 2012 schedule has now been released in full, and barring any major updates, is set. The blessing and curse of being an attendee is deciding which panels/autograph sessions/special events to attend, when they conflict. And they always do.
For you to see for yourself, below are what we are calling the “headliner” panels; those panels that are taking place in Hall H, Ballroom 20, Room 6Bdf, and the just-next-door Hilton Indigo Ballroom, the four major venues for panels. There are descriptions of each panel as well as the show(s) and/or movie(s) they are there to discuss.
See how many conflicts you might have, or how you might arrange time and space to somehow attend these plus spend every day in the vendors’ Exhibit Hall and chasing zombies in the nearby The Walking Dead Escape. By the way, if you figure that out, Please let us know.

Fans waited 5 long years for George R.R. Martin to release A Dance with Dragons, the 5th book in A Song of Ice and Fire. Was it worth it? Hell yes it was, but that doesn’t mean that the wait was easy. After fans turned the final page, the question on all of our minds apparent: how long until book six?
Well, either Martin loves screwing with us, or he’s sympathetic to our concerns. On his website, Grrm has released a chapter from The Winds of Winter, the 6th book in the series. Not only that, he has promised that another snippet of the book will appear in the paperback version of A Dance with Dragons in July. This is in no way an indication of how soon we’ll see the 6th book tome, but it’s comforting to know that he’s already hard at work on the next chapter.

"It doesn't matter if it's Christmas," Mike Milazzo says, "Penny's there." Penny Pollack laughs and agrees. "I haven't missed one yet!" Over the years, New York writers and actors have had many underground venues to try out new material—from the Caffe Cino to Surf Reality and Collective: Unconscious. It's a proud, if largely unsung, tradition. In those venues, some talented people have acted as catalysts—hosting open mics and other weekly events that gave performers a place to try new material: to experiment, often fail, and workshop new ideas with fellow performers. Pollack is one of those people. Every Tuesday night since 2007, she, along with collaborators Milazzo and Marsha Brown, have staged Penny's Open Mic. The trio sees their role as primarily nurturing fellow performers. "We want it to be collaborative, we want it to be supportive," said Brown. "It's a really eclectic night that way. People...

Hey Game Ranters, it’s Thursday, which means Sony has updated the PlayStation Store with new games, applications, and customizations for your PS3 and PSP. In addition to the PlayStation Store update we’ll also be covering retail game releases for the upcoming Tuesday as well.
This week on retails shelves sees the release of recently-shuttered Pandemic Studios’ title The Saboteur which suffered numerous production setbacks but is finally ready for release. The $49.99 price tag makes the package appealing but with numerous bargains available through the holiday season, there’s likely several other titles discerning gamers would rather check out. James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game arrives on Umd for the PSP; though, like most movie tie-ins, the game is mostly an uninspired endeavor.
The original Call of Duty is available today on the PlayStation Store and supports full online multiplayer, including leaderboards and other community features – all in full HD.
