It’s been nearly 50 years since Frank Zappa’s celebrated album, Over-Nite Sensation, first debuted. Now, the record is receiving box set treatment: the “super deluxe” Over-Nite Sensation: 50th Anniversary Edition will drop on November 3rd via Zappa Records and UMe.
Released in September 1973, the original Over-Nite Sensation was produced by Zappa and features a group of virtuosic musicians, including Tina Turner and a then-newly-reformed iteration of Zappa’s backing band called The Mothers, which had grown to include a number of jazz greats like Jean-Luc Ponty and George Duke. It came to be one of Zappa’s most commercially-successful releases, bringing his avant-garde sound to a wider audience.
Over-Nite Sensation: 50th Anniversary Edition was produced and compiled by Zappa’s son, Ahmet Zappa, as well as “Zappa Vaultmeister” Joe Travers. It boasts a whopping 57 previously unreleased tracks, including masters, mix outtakes, two live concerts, and more. It’s all packaged as a five-disc set,...

A trio of Frank Zappa’s Rust Belt-area concerts, performed during one of the rock legend’s most artistically fertile period, are the focus of an upcoming six-cd box set dubbed Zappa/Erie.
The box set captures a string of shows Zappa and his band (three different lineups) performed along the border of Pennsylvania and Ohio from 1974 to 1976, a three-year stretch that yielded his classic LPs Over-Nite Sensation, Apostrophe (‘), and One Size Fits All.

Tina Turner joins the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2021 in Cleveland this October, along with Jay-Z, Gil Scott-Heron, Todd Rundgren, Carole King, Foo Fighters, and The Go-Gos. Tina is already an honoree as a member of Ike and Tina Turner, and she is also once again distinguishing herself from the group. Even before she went solo, Turner had star billing, such as her turn as the Acid Queen in Ken Russell’s film adaptation of The Who’s Tommy. But Tina had to skip the credits for her work with Frank Zappa, who was posthumously inducted into the Rock Hall in 1995.
Turner recently made a gracious exit from the stage in HBO’s feature documentary Tina. She is also highlighted in Apple TV+’s upcoming 1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything. This was the year Ike and Tina’s cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Proud Mary” hit No.

[Lemmy passed away yesterday. Rip, you badass!] As we watch what may soon be the end of Motörhead, with a fine new album just out but iconic leader Lemmy's failing health forcing him from the stage on multiple nights, let's also look back at a milestone in the group's long career.
Bassist/singer Lemmy Kilmister started Motörhead in 1975 after getting kicked out of prog-rockers Hawkwind for being jailed on a drug charge in Canada during a tour. The band's early days were not marked by success. After being signed by United Artists, Motörhead's first shot at recording an album was rejected, and the label then blocked the group's attempted release of a single on Stiff. In '77 -- the lineup having completely turned over aside from its frontman -- they were ready to throw in the towel and even scheduled a farewell concert, but then Chiswick Records gave them money to record a single and...

What do you get when you mix stripping, grinding, mountains of glitter, barely-there lingerie, and self-pleasure? Ke$ha, of course! Pop music’s court jester released her sexy directorial debut ‘Dirty Love’ on Jan. 1, and to call it ‘not safe for work’ would be a massive understatement.
Ke$ha, 26, has never been afraid to show a little skin — but her new video for “Dirty Love” takes things a step or ten further. The singer’s directorial debut is a dirty, delightful raunch-fest that features the most questionable pair of underwear we’ve ever seen. Check it out below!

As Bill de Blasio was sworn in as the mayor of New York City (succeeding Emperor Bloomberg), he promised more equality in the nation’s largest city. “Black, white, Latino, Asian, gay, straight, old, young, rich, middle class, and poor. A city that remembers our responsibility to each other — our common cause — is to leave no New Yorker behind. It’s a place that celebrates a very simple notion: that no matter what your story is – this is your city. Our strength is derived from you. Working together, we will make this One City. And that mission — our march toward a fairer, more just, more progressive place, our march to keep the promise of New York alive for the next generation. It begins today.”
Because of course this is the type of bong Madonna would have.

Take Ke$ha, add copious amounts of glitter, barely-there lingerie and some serious sass, and voilà--You've got "Dirty Love!" The 26-year-old singer premiered her raunchy, very Nsfw music video--which also happens to be her directorial debut--just in time for 2014. Ke$ha wears black, semi-sheer lingerie at the beginning of the clip, which she quickly and hastily strips away. Homegirl dances her butt off (actually, it's still there! Those underwear don't cover any of her backside), touches herself provocatively and pretty much gets down with glitter in ways that would make any craft store blush. She ditches the bra completely at one point, gets sprayed with...

Not only does Ke$ha work her magic in front of the camera, but she also handles the directorial duties as well.

The Sweetest Thing (Roger Kumble, 2002)
The success of Bridesmaids aside, the raunchy female comedy is still a fairly rare subgenre in American filmmaking. To further muddy the waters as to what constitutes this genre, a lot of these films are written by women but directed by men—Bridesmaids fits this category, as do Dirty Love (John Asher, 2005), What's Your Number? (Mark Mylod, 2011), and the charmingly playful The Sweetest Thing (Roger Kumble, 2002). There are many things to like in Bridesmaids, but it does still lumber along with the same old Apatowesque narrative bloat that infects a lot of mainstream Us comedy. But The Sweetest Thing is breezy. It tries on different forms of genre and realism as though the entire movie were a fitting room. (There's even a scene that virtually literalizes this interpretation, if you've seen the movie.) Impromptu musical, buddy movie, romantic comedy: The Sweetest Thing is like a tour.

Los Angeles -- Becoming one of pop's top-selling acts over the past two years hasn't changed Ke$ha much – the girl who got famous by celebrating the trashy life is still reveling in it.
On her new album, she sings fondly of warm Budweiser and gives a thumbs-down to Champagne. One track is about sex with a ghost. She drinks bottom-shelf Taaka vodka.
And before a recent photo shoot, Ke$ha let out a massive belch that sent her busy prep team into an awkward silence.
"I still love having really terrible house parties," said a relaxed and reflective Ke$ha during a recent interview. "I still don't live my life with my happiness being dependent on name brands or how much things cost or some sort of VIP club. ... I still love being kind of scummy, to be honest."

Ke$ha (or Kesha, depending on where you look) made news this May by not looking like a mess. Her outfit at the Bmi Awards was reserved and, by her standards, fit for a nunnery.
The red carpet look probably doesn't foretell a great shift in her style of self-image, just like her transition from "Animal" (her first studio album) to "Warrior" (out Tuesday on RCA) isn't really a distinct break. While the new disc features a smarter mix of party anthems and actual rock songs (hints of The Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne and The Black Keys' Patrick Carney, who both worked with Ke$ha, are everywhere), oftentimes the differences are more stylistic than substantive. As the Los Angeles Times notes, she may have swapped the Jack Daniels of "Tik Tok" for wine on "Only Wanna Dance With You," but she's still drinking "on the cement outside 7-11" (also,...

Has Ke$ha grown up? The singer -- who may or may not singlehandedly keep glitter in business and recently talked extensively about ghost sex -- sounds almost mature on "Warrior," her second full-length album. Take "Wherever You Are," a mid-tempo pop-dance ballad that sounds like the next Katy Perry single: "Tangled up in your sheets, you saw the real me," Ke$ha sings. "You give me something to believe." That's a far cry from the Ke$ha on "Tik Tok," who memorably sang about brushing her teeth with a "bottle of Jack."
That mature Ke$ha sound continues on tracks like "Wonderland" (think Diane Warren), "Only Wanna Dance With You" (think The Strokes), "Supernatural" (think "Till The World Ends"-era Britney Spears) and "Love Into The Light" (think Coldplay plus Phil Collins). Before you dump last night's whiskey down the drain in disgust, however, fear not: As songs like "C'mon,...

It may not surprise you that Ke$ha collaborated with at least one half of the Black Keys on her new set "Warrior," particularly after hearing her track "Dirty Love" featuring Iggy Pop. The "whooooa" of the chorus will ring reminiscent of the blues-rock outfit's "Lonely Boy." But lets just say "Boy" is legions cleaner. "Dirty Love" starts with a Mickey Mouseketeerian introduction between Ke$ha and the legendary Stooges frontman, and the politeness stops there. They take turns referencing the nasty, and not just your, erm, vanilla variety. "All I need is to get in between your cheeks," she sings. Pop makes...

Ke$ha, HuffPost Entertainment's current patron saint of pop culture insanity, is back again with a newly leaked single. Surprise! This one, called "Dirty Love," also features Iggy Pop and a chorus that, unsurprisingly, contains the phrase "dirty love."
As Vulture notes, the guest verse sung by Iggy Pop is a cracker-jacker. "Cockroaches do it in garbage cans," he talk-sings, before adding that "Santorum do it in a v-neck sweater."
Not to be outdone, later in the song, Ke$ha sings that she just wants "your f--king filthy love."
Ke$ha's newest album, "Warrior," is due out on Dec. 4. The record already has two hit singles to its name: "Die Young," a current Top-40 staple, and "C'mon," a Spotify fave among for the HuffPost Entertainment editorial staff.

If it were up to Hollywood to form our feelings about menstruation, women would go through life thinking their periods were icky or scary, one researcher claims.
When political scientist Lauren Rosewarne set out in search of examples of TV shows and movies addressing the subject, she found plenty of periods-are-gross scenes and even menstruation-makes-you-evil sequences, but very few positive portrayals.
And that, she fears, may be sending young women very bad messages about their bodies during a normal biological process.
For her soon-to-be published book "Periods in Pop Culture," the Australian researcher dug up more than 200 menstruation scenes since the 1970s, culled from films and TV shows ranging from "Annie Hall" to "Mad Men."
Overall, the portrayals were overwhelmingly negative. But a few really stood out in her estimation as being the worst of the worst.

Are we in the midst of a garbage crisis, up to our necks in trash and fast running out of space for landfills to put it all in?
In a word: No. If only it were that simple.
Americans are good at fixing such acute crises. Look what happened when the shame and disgust at rampant litter reached a tipping point in the 1960s: We collectively changed our behavior and did it quickly. Litter-bugs became the outliers rather than the norm.

A year before Old School and three years before The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Wedding Crashes really kicked off the "Bromantic" era, a largely overlooked, poorly reviewed, and underappreciated Lady Bromance flick, The Sweetest Thing came and disappeared without much notice. At the time, I believe, it was thought to be a late-coming female version of a raunchy Farrelly Brothers movie, but I like to think of it more as a fore-running counterpoint to the Seth Rogen dick-joke movies that would dominate in the years thereafter. As a lady bromance, The Sweetest Thing may have been ahead of its time -- I don't think our popular culture was ready for filthy vagina humor -- but perhaps, as a result, it's actually the rare movie that has not only aged well, but that is actually better in 2010, now that some of the backwards world has caught up with the fact that women,...

Quel horreur! Ice diva/possible future Dancing With the Stars contestant Johnny Weir will be taking a competitive break from ice skating. At least for 2010-11 season. The reason? Weir wants a year to “explore and reinvent as an athlete and artist.” In his time off the ice, Weir will focus on new projects like his new single Dirty Love, a fashion line, and his memoirs. He’ll also be filming season two of his Sundance Channel reality series Be Good Johnny Weir.
Even though he’ll be working on many new projects, Weir definitely won’t disappear from the ice completely.
