Sincere, Genuinely sentimental, a peek inside Sonny And Cher
1birrmikelisa24 December 2002
The Sonny and Cher post marraige relationship has long been misunderstood. Cher has allowed a lot of criticism of her comments about ex-husband Sonny Bono to go by without too much comment. Here she tells the truth about their relationship and doesn't mince words when she tells of their stormy, unique and mostly misunderstood relationship. She gets sentimental about the man who forced her onstage to become a star in 1965 and says, "without Sonny, there would be no Cher". All I can say is thank you Sonny Bono and thank you Cher. Cher also sings a very soulful version of the Nat King Cole song, Nature Boy, a touching musical tribute to Sonny.

Warning: Spoilers
All of the verbal damage that they inflicted upon each other over the years, seems unimportant after viewing this program. I used to believe that Cher was really hard on Sonny in the press.....unfortunately it took his death for her to reveal her softer view of him.

We are taken from their respective childhood's, through Sonny's high school years (he was really good looking in his pictures circa high school), to their eventual meeting, falling in love (though Cher still beats around the bush as to exactly when Sonny and Cher became romantically involved--she was jail bait after all), to the Sonny as Phil Spector's gopher years, to the Cleo and Ceasar years (they do what sounds like a great rendition of "Love Is Strange"), to "I Got You Babe". After that, were treated to a bunch of clips from the Sonny and Cher Comedy hour (set to "But You're Mine") displaying Sonny's flair for comedy and obvious willingness to play all kinds of silly roles, which segways into Chastity and her impact on their lives.

Cher narrates throughout the show, but I was so very happy to hear her say, "People have an idea of what we were and what we meant to each other, but I don't think it's enough. They saw it as a show and business and popular, but people couldn't possibly KNOW WHAT WE MEANT TO EACH OTHER" Thank You Cher. I'm pleased that she finally revealed her true feelings about Son. I know she's a private person, but those kind words were nice to hear for a change. She ends with her own enormously touching rendition of "Nature Boy", set to some rarely seen photos and clips of Sonny and the two of them. It made me cry. Bravo Cher.

Their relationship was complicated (To Cher, Sonny was Father, Brother, Husband, Mentor, etc.) but I now believe that there were very deep feelings between the two of them, and that they were truly each other's soul mates. It's actually kind of a sad take on celebrity and how it can tear people apart.
