- In keeping with Squaresoft tradition, the U.S. version contains additional features not found in the original Japanese release. These include three hyper-difficult bosses. An International version has been released in Japan entitled Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix.
- There is a re-release of this game in Japan known as "Kingdom Hearts Final Mix" that was released at the end of 2002 in December. This version includes new abilities, weapons, heartless bosses and new scenes. This wouldn't be released outside of Japan until the release of Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix (2013) on the PS3 as one of the three games involved in this release where the game was remastered in HD. It was later ported over again and released on the PS4 as part of Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix (2017)
- Some scenes in the game will be different if you complete levels in different sequences.
- If you defeat Maleficent before defeating Cerberus in the Olympus Coliseum, she will not appear in the cut-scene with Hades.
- If you complete Hollow Bastion before Monstro, Riku will not help you in the battle against Parasite Cage or have as much dialogue with Sora.
- If Deep Jungle is completed before Wonderland's keyhole is sealed, Snow White will appear in the scene with the villains (instead of Alice).
- In the HD Version of Final Mix for both HD 1.5 Remix and HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix, the game was reworked to use the Reaction Command system from Kingdom Hearts II (2005) to improve the ease of use of the command-sensitive commands (formerly the fourth option in the battle menu) when compared to the original PS2 releases. In addition, the Final Fantasy X-2 promo on the game's menu is replaced with a Back button to return to 1.5 (or 1.5 + 2.5)'s main menu.
- The PS4 version for Kingdom Hearts Final Mix (1.5+2.5) is the only version of KHI to have a Theater Mode of being able to play all the main cutscenes which can be obtained from the Playstation Store as free DLC.
- The US version has a preview of Kingdom Hearts 2. International version has both a extended preview of Kingdom Hearts 2 and a promo for Final Fantasy X-2.
