Was Méliès really inspired by this?
BennyBlanco15 February 2007
The film is a very important piece of history in terms of the evolution of film, especially as if you say Méliès was inspired to make films from it, since he is one of the earliest people to have understood that movement could create the illusion of continuity and inspired Edwin S. Porter who set down the basic principles of editing (My job, so I have to be thankful). However without being derogatory to earlier comments I might point out that Méliès created "Escamotage d'une dame au théâtre Robert Houdin" known in English as "The Vanishing Lady" a simple editing trick but very sophisticated and entertaining at time of its creation in 1986 a good 2 years prior to this film. It is more likely that he was inspired by Louis Lumière's "La Sortie des usines Lumière" 1985 thought to be the earliest film screened to an audience, but who can be sure.
