Wendy Hughes, who has died in Sydney aged 61, will be remembered by her peers as one of the finest actors of her generation.
Hughes won the AFI award for best actress for Careful, He Might Hear You in 1983 and was nominated on six other occasions, for Newsfront, My Brilliant Career, Lonely Hearts, My First Wife, Echoes of Paradise and Boundaries of the Heart.
.She was a brilliant actress who set the standard and was pioneering for her era,. filmmaker Philippe Mora, who was a close friend in the 1980s and early 1990s, told If.
.In my opinion without Wendy there would have been no Judy Davis, no Nicole Kidman and no Cate Blanchett. If timing had been different she would have been a major international star. As it is she leaves a legacy of perfect performances as one of Australia's greatest actresses..

Des Monaghan has decided to step down as executive chairman of the Screentime Group, producers of the Underbelly franchise, Janet King and Cloudstreet, at the end of May.
Bob Campbell, who co-founded Screentime with Monaghan 18 years ago, will run the company as managing director. The Banijay Group bought a majority stake in 2012.
Monaghan will continue his association with Screentime as a consultant and producer of several projects including the Batavia miniseries for Network Ten.
"It's been an extraordinary run, a fantastic 18 years," he told If. "Television is a very tough game and it's getting tougher. The pressure on program directors is almost impossible with the total unpredictability and the fragmentation of audiences..
"I have had the very great fortune of having Bob Campbell as my business partner. It is fair to say that the success of the company far exceeded our initial expectations."
When Banijay bought into Screentime Monaghan was offered a five-year contract.

Aussie actors stage 24-hour strike
SYDNEY -- Actors working on local film and television productions began a 24-hour strike today after eight months of negotiations with the Screen Producers Association of Australia failed to resolve key issues. The action will affect a string of television dramas, including Home and Away, Stingers, MDA, All Saints and Blue Heelers. The Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance , the union representing the actors, and SPAA spent Wednesday in talks with the Industrial Relations Commission, but that failed to avert the strike that began at midnight. No one was available at MEAA for comment, but SPAA issued a statement Wednesday night saying that while "significant" progress had been made on the major issues in dispute, "it became apparent late in the process that MEAA would not stop industrial action tomorrow."...
