Adapted from the legendary tale by William Shakespeare, Luhrmann's version of the sordid tale of pleasure, prospect and poison resonated greatly with those belonging to "Generation X." William Shakespeare’s plays are more than 400 years old, and his prose and verses are now becoming easier to interpret with the help of actor Ian McKellen. McKellen and film director Richard Loncraine are unveiling their new iPad app, Heuristic Shakespeare, designed to assist others to better understand the playwright’s text. Heuristic Shakespeare features McKellen, along with fellow actors Derek Jacobi and Frances Barber, reading Shakespeare’s lines to the camera. The play’s text scrolls underneath the actors in conjunction with their line-readings. Actors are simply reading Shakespeare’s text directly to the user. The app also incorporates a history of Shakespeare, including a timeline of his life. Consumers are able to make notes, highlight text, and use the program for further educational and research purposes. “I’ve always felt, since I had to read Shakespeare at school, that wasn’t the way to be introduced to Shakespeare or to enjoy him,...

Unpopular opinion: Leonardo DiCaprio’s Romeo was sexier than Jack Dawson. Sure, Leo earned the honor of having his face plastered across every ‘90s preteen closet in America thanks to his heartthrobby turn as the ill-fated Titanic hunk, and we’ll never let go of that. But before he became the self-proclaimed King of the World, he was the pride of House Montague and cemented his status as a forever love. You may remember a while back when True Detective season two was first announced, fans started campaigning for their dream castings to take over from Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. Our favourite suggestion? Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart.
Sadly we had to make do with Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn and Rachel McAdams, but would Sir Ian ever consider season three? Well, when Digital Spy asked him, he in fact hadn't heard of the HBO anthology drama, but he could be tempted.
When we told him about the online picks, he said: "God bless you! Who knows. I would consider anything, I've got very Catholic tastes. I love pantomime, I've had some of my greatest fun playing the Dame. I love sitcom, I've enjoyed being in Vicious with Derek Jacobi. I adore Coronation Street and I loved being in it. I adore Shakespeare, ditto.
"I don't mind, any old thing really.

Gwyneth Paltrow silver dress on the Oscars' Red Carpet Gwyneth Paltrow at the Academy Awards Donning a shining silver dress, Gwyneth Paltrow arrives at the 2011 Academy Awards held on Feb. 27 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Paltrow's latest movie, Country Strong, was up for a Best Song Oscar. It lost to the Toy Story 3 ditty "We Belong Together," by Randy Newman. More than a decade ago, Gwyneth Paltrow took home the Best Actress Oscar for John Madden's Shakespeare in Love (1998), a romantic comedy-drama also featuring Joseph Fiennes (as William Shakespeare), Judi Dench, Geoffrey Rush, and this year's Best Actor Oscar winner, Colin Firth (The King's Speech). Paltrow's (moderately) gender-bending Shakespeare in Love heroine remains her only Oscar-nominated performance to date. Directed by Shana Feste, Country Strong fared decently at the U.S. box office, but not as well as some had expected. Besides Gwyneth Paltrow, the cast includes...

Moulin Rouge! is a mixed bag. It’s an idea that looks good on paper, but looks horrendous in execution. It’s a film where it should have the ability to make all the right emotional pivots, but succumbs to an ostentation that exists in its final product, making this a hallmark for director Baz Lurhmann’s career. I appreciate him, in an odd way, for injecting a very strange version of romance in his films, one that, in Moulin Rouge!, is wonderfully cynical and melancholy. In almost all of his work, his maximalism overshadows some of the most interesting aspects of the films (the sole exception being Strictly Ballroom, his first feature): the post-modern comments on capitalism in William Shakespeare’s Romeo+ Juliet, the inherent frivolity of “freedom, beauty, truth, and love” in Moulin Rouge!, and the hollow decadence of the parties in The Great Gatsby. But everything...

While Kenneth Branagh became best known as a director for his big screen adaptations of William Shakespeare.s greatest works, in the last few years he has done his part to completely shake up his own reputation. He got a taste of fantasy adventure with Thor in 2011, and tried his hand at political intrigue with Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit earlier this year. For his next feature, he's tackling fairy tales with Cinderella. We still have nearly a full year before we get to see how his adaptation of the classic tale will turn out, but earlier today we got a very special sneak peek of the movie with a special screening of footage shown during the Walt Disney Studios presentation at CinemaCon. Kicking off with the classic "Once Upon A Time" voice over narration, the footage began with shots of a young girl named Ella living what seems to be...

Sir Kenneth Branagh has led a fascinating career. Picking up five Oscar nominations along his travels, the British actor and director has notoriously brought the work of William Shakespeare to the big screen, while his recent endeavours have been somewhat different, as following on from Thor, he now steps into the Tom Clancy universe, with Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit – where he not only directs, but stars as the leading antagonist.
We had the great pleasure to sit down with Branagh, to discuss how differently he approaches material, be it Shakespeare or Clancy, and we ask how he perfected his Russian accent, while he tells us a little about his forthcoming project, Cinderella.
(And yeah, yeah, I know, I said “Jack Reacher” in the opening question. This interview took place at 9am on a Monday morning, okay?)
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is out on January 24, and you can read our review here.

Having made a name for himself tackling the challenging work of a certain William Shakespeare, Kenneth Branagh has since tried his hand at more contemporary material, and following his triumphant divergence into the Marvel universe with Thor, he’s now got his eyes set on the work of Tom Clancy, as he returns to the director’s chair once again,, to bring the renowned, fictional character Jack Ryan to the big screen.

London, Oct 13: Experts have claimed that William Shakespeare may have penned parts of three Elizabethan-era plays after a new linguistic "fingerprinting" test discovered his fingerprints on the manuscripts.
The three plays - 'Arden of Faversham', 'The Spanish Tragedy' and 'Mucedorus', which were previously believed to have been written by others, will now be included in a new edition of works by the famous playwright, 'William Shakespeare and others: Collaborative plays', the Guardian reported.
A renowned Shakespeare scholar, Jonathan Bate, believes that the evidence shows that specific parts within those plays must have had input from Shakespeare.
Bate, professor of English literature at Oxford University, said.

William Shakespeare. He may not be the easiest author to wrap your head around, but that doesn’t stop him from being one of the greatest writers who ever lived. In his lifetime, he wrote 38 plays (along with multiple poems) that are still performed around the world today. Over the years, there have also been several great filmmakers who have adapted many of them for the cinema, including Sir Laurence Olivier, Orson Welles, Sir Kenneth Branagh, Baz Luhrmann, and, most recently, Joss Whedon.
Now I know what you’re thinking. Joss Whedon? The guy who created Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and directed the big-budget action film The Avengers… taking on Shakespeare? William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet
Gatsby director Baz Luhrmann and star Leonardo Dicaprio are no strangers to adapting old literature and plays. Case in point, their modern retelling of the play "Romeo and Juliet." Sure, you could watch the 40's or 70's version for "historical accuracy," but who wants that? Instead go with Romeo + Juliet. Is it good? No. Is entertainingly insane? Yes. In the reports though, you might want to avoid mentioning the "gang wars."

If any piece of classic American literature should be depicted on film with wildly decadent and boldly inventive style, it's "The Great Gatsby." After all, who was the character of Jay Gatsby himself if not a spinner of grandiose tales and a peddler of lavish dreams?
And Baz Luhrmann would seem like the ideal director to bring F. Scott Fitzgerald's story to the screen yet again, to breathe new life into these revered words, having shaken up cultural institutions previously with films like "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet" and "Moulin Rouge!" This is the man who dared to stage the iconic balcony scene in a swimming pool, so mixing in a little Jay-z amid the Jazz Age standards strangely makes sense.
But in Luhrmann's previous films, there still existed a fundamental understanding of the point of the stories he was telling; beneath their gorgeous trappings, they still reflected the...

‘The Great Gatsby’ could have kept it’s original title of just ‘Gatbsy’ and avoided a ton of punn-y headlines about this new Baz Luhrmann fever dream being less-than ‘Great.’ When the title for the film is revealed at the very end of the movie, “The Great” is an addendum to the story of ‘Gatsby,’ which makes total sense as this movie falls in the crack between bold adaptation and visual spectacle.
Luhrmann’s trilogy of performance films: ‘Strictly Ballroom,’ ‘William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet,’ and ‘Moulin Rouge’ all take aspects of the performing arts and turn them into cinematic kaleidoscopes of kinetic energy, and I genuinely mean that, I don’t just like the letter K. ‘Gatsby,’ however, is descended from a novel – the “Great American Novel” as most people have it described to them in school – and struggles to translate the thrill of reading a good book into...

Lana Del Rey has said that Baz Luhrmann's upcoming adaptation of The Great Gatsby is "glamorous and exciting".
The singer-songwriter appears on the Jay-z-curated soundtrack for the film, contributing the new song 'Young And Beautiful'.
Del Rey said: "It was an honour to work with Baz Luhrmann on his amazing adaptation of one of the most extraordinary books ever written.
"The movie is highly glamorous and exciting; Rick Nowels and I were thrilled to write the song for the film."
Jay-z previously said: "The Great Gatsby is that classic American story of one's introduction to extravagance, decadence and illusion.
"It's ripe for experimentation and ready to be interpreted with a modern twist. The imagination Baz brought to Moulin Rouge! made it a masterpiece, and Romeo + Juliet's score wasn't just in the background; the music became a character.
"This film's vision and direction has all the makings of an epic experience.

The following Great Gatsby posters are brought to you by The Lebanese Cinema Movie Guide.
Many of us are crossing our fingers hoping that this Baz Luhrmann-directed Gatsby will do justice to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s best-known work. Luhrmann did a respectable job with William Shakespeare’s best-known work twelve years ago and he did it with Leonardo DiCaprio as his leading man. On May 10th, we will know if this reunion between director and leading man yielded similar results.

As in "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet," Aussie director Baz Luhrmann is looking to circumvent Generation Y's deep loathing for anything from before this past decade by saturating his lavish film version of F. Scott Fitzgerald's Jazz Age romance "The Great Gatsby" with pop tunes aplenty.
True to his past behavior, Reuters reports that Luhrmann has lured 17-time Grammy champ Jay-z in the curatorial executive producer capacity on "Gatsby," meaning he's procuring, producing and arranging all the artists' tracks for the soundtrack, rumored to include the likes of Lady Gaga and Prince.
That's appropriate, given that the Jigga man's moniker is actually taken from childhood nickname "Jazzy," although this runs contrary to initial reports that had the rapper actually scoring the film, a job that will actually fall to Craig Armstrong.
"In our age, the energy of jazz is caught in the energy of hip-hop," said Luhrmann. "Not only is Jay-z a great artist,...

One of the most intriguing questions of the movie year has been demystified. Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby has a composer, and it's hip-hop mogul and Glastonbury-conquering popster, Jay-z. 1920s Long Island just got one louder. If it looks like a typically off-beam musical choice by the man who brought William Shakespeare and Butthole Surfers together, it's not wholly unexpected. The film's two trailers to date have featured Mr Z's collaboration with Kanye West 'No Church In The Wild' from Watch The Throne. For the Gatsby score, Jay-z will be working with producer-singer-songwriter Jeymes Samuel, aka The Bullitts, who recently lent his sound to upcoming Western They Die By Dawn. Check out his Star Wars-inspired single Landspeeder here. Samuel broke the news on his Twitter feed:Jay-z and myself have been working tirelessly on the score for the upcoming #Classic The Great Gatsby! It is too Dope for words!

Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan star in Baz Luhrmann's film of The Great Gatsby. Here's the brand new trailer for it...
Pushed back from its original December release to a new summer 2013 slot, Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of The Great Gatsby looks like a visually luxurious adaptation of the book.
The film sees Leonardo DiCaprio reuniting with Luhrmann (following their work on William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet), with the cast also featuring Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire. And we've got a new trailer for the film that's just been released. It might be too early to talk the 2014 Oscars, but at the very least, there's a production design nod in the offing here.
Here's the trailer, and the film is set for UK cinemas on May 17th 2013.

Similar to their own beach read-based "Jack Reacher," Paramount has taken author Tom Clancy's most famous hero, CIA analyst Jack Ryan, and given him a new lease on cinematic life with next year's creatively-titled blockbuster "Jack Ryan."
Kind of a "Jack Ryan Begins," if you will, the new movie stars Chris Pine as Ryan, a character who first hit the screen more than 20 years ago in "The Hunt for Red October." With the Cold War long behind us, is the character still relevant all these years after his inception?

When news first broke that Paramount would be bringing Tom Clancy‘s adventurous accountant, Jack Ryan, back to the big screen few people were all that thrilled. The character’s three previous incarnations (across four films) struck some as a series of diminishing returns creatively and a box-office flat line. But hey, even Ben Affleck‘s turn in The Sum of All Fears collected just under $200 million worldwide, and Paramount isn’t stupid enough to let go of a built-in audience. As long ago as 2008 word was that Sam Raimi would be helming Ryan’s return, but news and interest seemed to dry up shortly thereafter. A year later Chris Pine enlisted for the lead role, but the film seemed no closer to production. Earlier this year though Kenneth Branagh tossed his hat into the ring and signed on to direct. Would that finally be enough to get this thing going? Per...

He has tackled William Shakespeare and a Norse God. Now Kenneth Branagh has received a top royal honor for his efforts. The Thor director was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II over the weekend, a boon he said was made more significant because it came during her Diamond Jubilee year. "I feel very humble about it, I feel elated about it," Branagh told BBC News. “It would be an amazing thing at any time. In the jubilee year, I'm sure anybody else that's had the good fortune to be recognized would feel as I do. Very, very special." Photos: Queen Elizabeth II Diamond

If there's one thing Baz Luhrmann is known for its glamor. The romantic director behind such dazzling romances as William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge and Australia set the internet aflame with the sparkly and style-stuffed trailer for his next grandiose tale of love The Great Gatsby. In that marketing maneuver, it was only the poster.which alludes to wealth and the darkness beyond its glittery surface.that was subtle. With its anachronistic soundtrack, abundance of slo-mo and in-your-face emoting, I personally found the movie's first trailer too much all around. However these new images from Wwd are pulling me back into the sway of Gatsby's enchanting world of glitz and deceit. The first image shows Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, an aspiring writer with a twisted interest in the affluent community of West Egg, Long Island, sitting happily alongside Leonardo DiCaprio's eponymous tragic figure, Jay Gatsby, a...

Just about every high schooler is practically forced at gunpoint to read F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel "The Great Gatsby," perhaps because no other work both celebrates and condemns the promise of the American Dream with such insight. Now "Moulin Rouge!" director Baz Luhrmann is going to sprinkle his particular brand of pizzazz all over it.
Reuniting with "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet" poster boy Leonardo DiCaprio, Luhrmann is staying true to the story of self-made man Gatsby and his doomed love affair with Daisy Buchanan, while adding contemporary style and music for what's sure to be an intoxicating cocktail of the Prohibition era. Consider this your invite to Gatsby's West Egg soiree.

Modern day updates of William Shakespeare’s works are nothing new. From Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet to 10 Things I Hate About You, writers have always had a fondness for taking The Bard’s works and updating them for modern times – not that they ever needed it in the first place. What you don’t see so often is someone taking a modern property and “Shakespeare-izing” it – which is exactly what’s happening at Chicago’s Greenhouse Theater Center on March 16th, when a full-length version of a new play entitled Pulp Shakespeare (aka Bard Fiction) will be presented. If the title didn’t give it away, Pulp Shakespeare is a recreation of Quentin Tarantino’s much-loved Pulp Fiction. The play first gained buzz back in...

It's dangerous to underestimate modern-day reinterpretations of Shakespeare, a la Baz Luhrmann's William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet and Michael Almereyda's Hamlet, not because Shakespeare necessarily needs to be modernized, but because it's astonishing how much retooling, rejiggering and restuffing he can withstand: His work is like a magic carpet bag that never gets filled up or worn out.

The shock in this exposé of the Bard is that it's rather good
The last time Derek Jacobi appeared in a movie with a literary bent it was a year ago in Clint Eastwood's dreadful life-after-death drama Hereafter, where he cameoed as himself, to the delight of Matt Damon's Dickens fan – a man who loved the novels so much he listened only to the audio versions. Jacobi's appearance at the beginning of this stunningly-designed takedown of the Bard – directed by the man behind Independence Day and Godzilla – might therefore be taken by some as a signal to leave the cinema immediately.
But Roland Emmerich's meticulously crafted and often well-acted exposé of the "real" William Shakespeare is shocking only in that it is rather good.

For his next trick, Roland Emmerich — the man who brought you such blockbusters as "Independence Day," "The Day After Tomorrow" and "2012" — will be taking you all the way back to the times of ... Shakespeare?
It's perhaps not a conventional choice for a filmmaker who is best known for his over-the-top alien invasions and natural disasters, but make no mistake, "Anonymous" is a movie that is very near and dear to Emmerich's heart. The project — which takes place during Elizabethan England and centers on Edward de Vere (Rhys Ifans), the Earl of Oxford and a man who some believe to be the true author of Shakespeare's works — has been in development for nearly a decade.
