This video chronicles Gretzky's career through the early part of the '89-'90 season, when he eclipsed Gordie Howe's all-time points record. It's a little short at 58 minutes but it still manages to give some insight into his life and accomplishments during his first decade in the NHL.
The production values unmistakably show the video's roots in the late eighties/early nineties. The music is the worst offender but the 'movie trailer' style of narration is also irritating at times. It's a presentation that should have had less gloss and more class.
The content of the video is fairly satisfying but when it covers a man who holds over fifty NHL records it's bound to seem a little slight. The length could easily have been doubled, preferably with more interview snippets from players and coaches. Also, the fact that this video only covers roughly the first half of his career is an obvious limitation if you're looking for a fuller overview of his accomplishments.
I had fond memories of watching this video years ago but this recent viewing unfortunately left much to be desired. Though I haven't seen it, I expect that the more recent DVD "Ultimate Gretzky" blows this video out of the water.
