Ever notice that there hasn’t been a live-action Dr. Seuss movie in more than 20 years? Sure, there are plenty of animated adaptations, but real actors making Seuss magic were officially forbidden by Audrey Geisel, the wife of the late Theodore, more popularly known as Dr. Seuss. The reason for the ban can be summed up in two words: Mike Myers.
The problem was 2003’s The Cat in the Hat, the critically reviled adaptation that starred Myers. He wasn’t the first choice for the role, but once he signed on, the project took on his adolescent sense of humor, including the Cat shaking what his mama gave him in a coconut bra.
“I never saw Austin Powers, but I knew ‘Yeah, baby!’ and I didn’t want ‘Yeah, baby!’ at all,” Audrey Geisel told Today in 2004 while imitating Myers’ character in disgust. (She passed away in 2018.)

When you think of actors getting trapped in unfair contracts, your mind probably goes to the era of Old Hollywood and the studio system, when stars worked for one studio and one studio only, sometimes making as many as five films a year for their corporate bosses. This system started falling apart in 1948 due to a Supreme Court case that led to the Paramount Decrees, a group of antitrust laws that broke up the studios' Hollywood monopoly.
Though the Paramount Decrees ended in 2020, the landmark Supreme Court ruling forever changed how Hollywood operated. Of course, actors still sign contracts with studios that limit their ability to choose which projects they take on. Hollywood is a business above all else, and the bosses want to make as much money off their actors as they possibly can. As such, lawsuits between actors and studios are more common than you might think, revealing...

In its second week on Netflix, Prison Break rocketed to the top of Nielsen’s streaming rankings.
The former Fox series, which also streams on Hulu, was added to Netflix on July 29 and made its streaming chart debut that week. For the week of Aug. 5-11, it more than doubled the previous frame’s viewing time, rising from 758 million to 1.6 billion minutes. (Hulu, incidentally, is developing a new version of Prison Break with Mayans Mc showrunner Elgin James.)
Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy — whose final season premiered Aug. 8 — was the top original series for the week, coming in at 1.46 billion minutes of viewing. That’s a strong showing, but also down a good amount from the 2.45 billion minutes the show recorded the week of its season three premiere in June 2022.

If you're a Netflix subscriber, you know how this works by now. A movie debuts in theaters and either nobody goes to see it and/or the critics tear it to pieces, only for the film to see a resurgence in interest when it becomes available for streaming. It happened just recently with the Mike Myers flop "The Cat in the Hat," and would you believe even "Madame Web" saw success when it finally hit Netflix? You probably would, because as Michael Fassbender flop "The Snowman" proved in 2023, Netflix subscribers will pretty much watch anything.
Netflix is the kingmaker among streamers with 277 million subscribers, but Amazon Prime Video's 230 million subs isn't too shabby. As it happens, we have a good example of how a brand new critical flop can become a hit on Prime Video with "Jackpot!," the 2024 action comedy from "Bridesmaids" and "Spy" director by Paul Feig. After the success of Ron Howard's "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" (a hit so big even the 2018 animated remake broke box office records), it was a no-brainer for Hollywood to look to other Dr. Seuss books for inspiration for its next success. DreamWorks quickly set its sights on "The Cat in the Hat" and greenlit a live-action adaptation with a budget over $100 million, tapping another Canadian-born comedic A-lister to star in the film -- in this case, Mike Myers, an actor who was at the peak of his career, starring in both the "Austin Powers" trilogy And "Shrek" at the same time. The 2003 film also starred Spencer Breslin and Dakota Fanning, the former a popular actor with kids at the time thanks to "The Santa Clause 2" and the latter a phenomenal young actor too good for this disappointing project.

Coming out of D23, it’s not shocking to hear that Frozen 3 is getting the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Nov. 24, 2027 release date. That’s the traditional time when Frozen and Disney animated movies ‘let it go’ so to speak; har har har. On Friday night at Disney’s presentation, it was indicated that the threequel would open in 2027.
The first Frozen opened limited in one theater for five days in 2013 before blasting out wide on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Frozen 2 opened on the Friday before Thanksgiving in 2019. Together the two movies racked up $2.7 billion.
In addition, Pixar’s new movie about a human brain inside of a beaver, Hoppers, is opening on March 6, 2026. Warner Bros. has their animated version of The Cat in the Hat there. Well, someone’s gonna want to move there. Hoppers features the voices of Jon Hamm and Bobby Moynihan. The title was announced on...

When the live-action adaptation of ‘The Cat in the Hat’ premiered in November 2003, it primarily targeted late Millennials and early Gen Z viewers. As a young audience, they were mostly oblivious to the film’s many adult jokes. Instead, they delighted in the memorable musical numbers, the vibrant color palette of every scene, and the playful comedy. Now, 21 years later, that same audience has grown up and often remembers the movie as either a comical fever dream or a childhood nightmare. From the many reviews I've read about this movie, it's clear that it didn't live up to many people's expectations upon release. Movie critics hoped for something that truly depicted the book—something more wholesome, rather than an oversized cat making adult jokes every few minutes. One critic remarked, “The Cat in the Hat comes scarily close to being the most unendurable Hollywood creation of the last dozen years.

Growing up, I loved the children’s novel “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.” So when the Hollywood film version came along, you’d better believe I was primed. Like the book, the movie was about a family with a father who builds a magical flying car. But any similarity ended there. The book’s tone was cool and dry and deadpan irreverent — the author, after all, was Ian Fleming of James Bond fame — but the movie was a wacked piece of ersatz-Disney musical kitsch. Fleming’s debonair absurdist saga of gangsters and hair’s-breadth escapes was replaced by a broad fairy tale featuring a kidnapper called the Child Catcher. Watching the movie, I kept wondering when the real story — the one I’d loved — would start; somehow, it never did. What happened to it? By the time the movie was over, I had suffered the 9-year-old’s once-upon-a-time equivalent of Ptsd.

Sony and Legendary’s upcoming adaptation of Street Fighter may have lost its directors, but it’s gained a firm release date.
Sony and Legendary have announced that their upcoming movie adaptation of Street Fighter will be arriving in cinemas worldwide on the 20th March 2026. The announcement comes just days after it was revealed that the film’s directors, Danny and Michael Philippou – aka RackaRacka – have departed the project due to scheduling reasons.

Xochitl Gomez, best known for playing Marvel heroine America Chavez in the studio’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is shooting Hive, a horror short from rising Colombian-American filmmaker Felipe Vargas.
Written and directed by Vargas, Hive stars Gomez as a teenage babysitter who loses the young girl she’s taking care of at an idyllic playground and is forced to confront an insidious entity hidden among the children. Gomez stars alongside Lorelei Olivia Mote, a tyke who has appeared in American Horror Story and Daisy Jones & the Six.
The story is being told in real time and and set in the bright daylight of the outdoors, something the filmmakers think differentiates their project from most horror projects.

Imran Khan, who recently returned to social media, has been making headlines with his throwback pictures and interactive sessions with his audience. Fans have been speculating about his return to films, but the actor has now revealed why he and his relatives, including Aamir Khan, don’t regularly attend award functions.
According to Imran, while they take their craft seriously and put their heart into their work, they don’t get caught up in the additional trappings of the industry. “We take our craft seriously, we put our heart into that, the rest of it is sprinkling on the top, which you shouldn’t be enamored with,” he said.
Imran’s last film was “Katti Batti” in 2015, after which he took a break from acting. His absence from the screen has led to much speculation about his return, but for now, he seems to be focused on his personal life and social media interactions.

Last week, news broke that Bill Hader would voice the lead in Warner Bros. new fully animated movie The Cat in the Hat, based on Dr. Seuss’ 1957 classic children’s book. Today, the studio confirmed that the film will hit theaters in March 2026, with Hader joined by current SNL player Bowen Yang and longtime SNL writer Paula Pell, as well as Quinta Brunson, Matt Berry, and Xochitl Gomez.
Hader is a seasoned voice actor whose talent has won him roles in Sausage Party, Toy Story 4, and Bob’s Burgers, so it’s easy to see, or rather, hear, why WB would turn to Hader for its new Cat in the Hat movie — but in this case, Warner Bros. execs also had a visual aid, though it’s up for debate whether it helped Hader’s case or hurt it.

Bill Hader or, at least, an animated character that he voices, will don a red-and-white striped top hat in a new adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ “The Cat in the Hat.”
The “Barry” star will lead a vocal ensemble that also includes Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Bowen Yang (“SNL”), Xochitl Gomez (“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”), Matt Berry (“What We Do in The Shadows”) and Paula Pell (“Girls5eva”). Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Dr. Seuss Enterprises officially announced the casting on Monday.
“The Cat in the Hat” will open in theaters on March 6, 2026. Although the book is a children’s classic, it has a checkered cinematic legacy. A 2003 live-action adaptation, starring Mike Myers as he was riding high off of “Austin Powers,” collapsed at the box office. It earned $134 million on a $109 million budget and became a money-loser when marketing and distribution costs were factored into the equation. It...

Studio Ghibli, a scrappy Japanese animation studio that was founded in the ‘80s, would go on to become an industry powerhouse that surpasses Disney’s sense of fantasy, Pixar’s emotional catharsis, and the unabashed against-the-grain individualism of DreamWorks Animation. Hayao Miyazaki’s name is often synonymous with Studio Ghibli, the animation studio that he founded with fellow director Isao Takahata and producer Toshio Suzuki. Every Studio Ghibli film is special, but Hayao Miyazaki is an anime auteur whose cinematic offerings become pop culture events that redefine animation and storytelling.
Hayao Miyazaki is a renowned voice in traditional hand-drawn animation whose movies have record-breaking budgets and take over a decade to complete. And every time, they’re worth it. Miyazaki’s feature films may seem like playful escapism to outsiders, but recurring elements and themes define the quintessential Miyazaki experience. Miyazaki’s anime oeuvre may come across as intimidating and impenetrable to newcomers.

In another maneuver by the David Zaslav-run Warner Bros Discovery to kill movies, we hear on very good authority that Warner Bros will not be releasing the hybrid live-action/animated Coyote vs. Acme, with the conglom taking an estimated $30M write-down on the $70M production. We understand the write-down for the pic was applied to the recently reported Q3.
This reps the third time that Zaslav’s Warner Bros has pulled the plug on a movie greenlighted by the previous Warner Media administration, the other two being the Max-destined Batgirl and the animated Scoob Holiday Haunt!
The difference here is that Coyote vs. Acme is a completed movie with very good test scores, 14 points above the family norm. We’re told that the cash-strapped Warners finds that it’s not worth the cost to release the film theatrically or to sell to other buyers (and there are parties who...

Exclusive: As the Annecy Animation Film Festival gets underway this weekend, Warner Bros’ newly hired President of Feature Animation Bill Damaschke has announced a rebranding of the motion picture division with a focus on filmmakers.
Previously known as Wag, aka Warner Animation Group, the Burbank, CA lot’s feature toon unit will now be known as Warner Bros Pictures Animation.
“It’s honoring the past and rich history of the company. Warner Bros Pictures Animation released movies like Iron Giant, Space Jam, Corpse Bride, Polar Express, Happy Feet and The Lego Movie — benchmark films that broke new ground, new technology, new ways of telling stories and were successful, artistically and commercially. They last in people’s hearts, every one of those films,” said Damaschke about the label, which counts a filmmaker-driven original feature animated canon from such directors as Brad Bird, Tim Burton, George Miller, Robert Zemeckis, and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

One of the most eagerly anticipated series of the spring is coming to Netflix on April 6. Ali Wong and Steven Yeun star in “Beef” as strangers involved in a road-rage incident. But rather than let insurance sort it out, the two drivers morph into lunatics bent on revenge, resulting in increasingly harrowing — and hilarious — circumstances.

More than just a meme, on April 13, Netflix unveils limited series “Florida Man,” which follows a struggling ex-cop (played by Edgar Ramírez) forced to return to his home state of Florida to find a Philly mobster’s runaway girlfriend. So many great stories in history start out with the key players hating each other — as it is in Netflix and A24’s “Beef,” streaming on Netflix in April. Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun) meet via parking lot bump turned action-movie car chase, their lives connecting and their road rage lingering in weeks and months after the incident. In reviewing the series, IndieWire’s Ben Travers said that “’Beef’ does a fine job balancing Amy and Danny’s practical intelligence and impractical passions; their bitterness toward the other driver ebbs and flows as their personal lives better or worsen, and it’s in these moments that the half-hour drama thrives.”

Deliciously fanciful desserts are served up on new Prime Video cooking contest Dr. Seuss Baking Challenge, hosted by Tamera Mowry-Housley. Oh, the things that are made by the talented teams of pastry chefs and cake artists who make even green eggs and ham sound appealing. Each episode transports viewers to the make-believe City of Seuss as the participants take inspiration and put their culinary spin on timeless tales such as “The Cat in the Hat,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “The Lorax,” and “Horton Hears A Who.” Judges and baking bigwigs Clarice Lam and Joshua John Russell decide the best bites and narrow down the field of nine duos to one across multiple rounds. The winning “Seuss” chefs earn honorary citizenship, are inducted into City Hall’s Hall of Fame, and receive a key to the city and 50,000. Here Mowry-Housely, who also hosted last year’s Baker’s Dozen, takes...
