Long considered the gold standard of television, HBO continues to dominate the small screen with broadcast hits and streaming successes (via the platform Max). In the 2020s alone, it's produced a range of shows that mostly define what audiences expect from modern TV. Just as every crime drama has aspired to be "The Wire" or "The Sopranos" since the early 2000s, now every corporate thriller wants to be "Succession," every teen drama "Euphoria," and every fantasy "Game of Thrones." Of course, not every one of these aspiring shows can reach the high bar HBO has set -- and that includes its own series.
Indeed, HBO has developed its fair share of duds in the past. Sometimes, it seems as though they desired to repeat the success of previous triumphs like "Sex and the City" or "Veep"; others might have gotten too swept up in the ambitious vision of once-reliable artists...

HBO’s The Wire never won an Emmy, was only nominated twice in the writing categories and never received a single nod in any of the major categories including acting.
Seth Meyers wants Emmy voters not to make another mistake like that when it comes to Corrections, the digital shortform spinoff of his NBC talk show Late Night with Seth Meyers.
Corrections has been nominated three times in the Outstanding Short Form Comedy, Drama or Variety Series category, losing out to Carpool Karoake: The Series and Only Murders in the Building: One Killer Question and not even being nominated the year Meyers’ friend Tim Robinson won with I Think You Should Leave.
“It’s a f*cking lock. I know you’re not supposed to say this, but I think there’s a real risk for Emmy voters,” Meyers joked during his panel at Deadline’s Contenders TV Documentary, Unscripted & Variety.

Alexander SKARSGÅRD has always been drawn towards anarchy: disruptive characters who turn worlds upside down. Now, as he plays a rogue android in Murderbot, we meet him to discover what pushes his buttons
“Is there blood in my hair?”, asked Alexander Skarsgård’s Eric Northman, having just killed, dismembered and feasted upon some unlucky soul in HBO’s vampire saga True Blood. For many, the show was their first exposure to Skarsgård, who was starting as he meant to go on: anarchic, provocative, and unafraid to play characters with an unhealthy moral compass.
True Blood wasn’t *quite* the start. The son of Stellan Skarsgård, he acted in a few things as a child in Sweden before jacking it in, then appeared in 2001’s Zoolander, playing a model, Meekus, who gets blown up in a petrol station. After spending a few years in the Hollywood wilderness, Skarsgård finally broke through...

Hot on the heels of those awesome Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning posters, Lionsgate has debuted twelve kickass new character posters of their own for their upcoming actioner Ballerina, which stars Academy Award-nominee Ana de Armas as Eve Macarro, a young new Ruska Roma assassin that is out for blood as she attempts to avenge her fallen family.
Standing in her way, however, will be an entire horde of top-level killers, none bigger than the legendary Baba Yaga himself, John Wick (Keanu Reeves), who it seems will be tasked with dissuading her conquest or taking her out... permanently.
While you'll have to wait until June to find out what ultimately happens when the two square off, the film is easily one of this summer's most anticipated offerings as Ana de Armas tackles the most physically demanding role of her career - and her deadliest role since playing the fan-favorite...

‘The Chosen’ Creator Prepares Fans for the Last Supper: ‘I Don’t Love Filming, I Love Having Filmed’

It’s only a week into shooting Season 6 of his hit indie Christian TV series “The Chosen,” and Dallas Jenkins is already feeling the toll of his most demanding shoot yet.
After eight years developing and shooting 40 episodes that go deeper into the Gospel story, Jenkins has arrived at the most famous part of Jesus Christ’s tale: his crucifixion. It has been brought to life many times over the decades in films ranging from “Jesus Christ Superstar” to “The Passion of the Christ,” but doing it on a crowdfunded budget brings its own unique challenges.
“Our schedule is 20 days longer than it normally is, because we have so many night shoots. In the Gospel, there’s three hours of darkness that takes place when Jesus is on the cross,” Jenkins told TheWrap. “Our budget is bigger than ever, but not in a good way. We’ve had to go...

The latest confirmed casting in DC's upcoming Lanterns television series gives fans a good idea of who Hal Jordan and John Stewart will be fighting. The show is set to air on HBO in 2026.
Deadline confirmed that Paul Ben-Victor (The Wire) will have a recurring key role in Lanterns as Antaan, an extraterrestrial devoted to exposing the truth and taking vengeance on those who wronged his people. The character's description reads that he is "consumed by a deep and unrelenting hatred for the law" and is determined to "deliver justice on his own terms." The character seems highly likely to find conflict with the peace-keeping Hal Jordan (Kyler Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre).
Other previously announced cast members for Lanterns include Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Jason Ritter as Billy Macon, Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry, and Ulrich Thompsen as Sinestro among others. The series will follow the newly...

Deadline reports that Paul Ben-Victor has joined the cast of HBO’s Lanterns for what will be a key recurring role as a mysterious extraterrestrial.
The actor will play Antaan, “an extraterrestrial devoted to exposing the truth and exacting vengeance against those who wronged his people. Consumed by a deep and unrelenting hatred for the law, he is determined to deliver justice on his own terms.” While the name is different, fans believe that the character is actually Atrocitus, a character who was forced to witness the death of his wife and children (as well as nearly every living being in his sector) after a rampage of rogue Manhunters. He becomes the leader of the Red Lantern Corps and swears vengeance against the Guardians of the Universe and all who serve them.

HBO is known for its legacy shows such as The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, The Wire, and Game of Thrones. The premium network is known for its quality storytelling and was instrumental in ushering in the Golden Age of TV at the turn of the millennium. The shows that were aired during this time transformed TV storytelling.
However, in the age of streaming, there are plenty of networks and streamers who have built on HBO’s legacy. The network also has a streaming platform of its own in Max, which has been giving some excellent work in the form of The White Lotus and The Last of Us.
However, there are a few shows that seem to have fallen under the radar for fans, which proves that HBO is still one of the big players in the game. Here are 8 underrated HBO shows that did not get the love they deserved when they first aired.

Apart from being People’s Sexiest Man Alive, Michael B. Jordan has established himself as a serious actor, a successful producer, and a director, too. Jordan has had a solid filmography so far, which has included small television parts to blockbuster hits, particularly in the last decade. He first came to everyone’s attention when he appeared as Wallace in HBO’s The Wire. He then became more popular with roles in shows like All My Children and Friday Night Lights.
However, his luck in movies shone when he started his partnership with Ryan Coogler. Their professional team-up is such that sometimes it feels like Jordan’s blockbusters depend on whether Coogler is involved or not. However, it doesn’t mean that the actor has failed with other directors. Here are some Michael B. Jordan movies that left their mark on the global box office.

Killing off a well-liked character on a television series with a fiercely devoted fan base can obviously be quite perilous, especially when they don't know it's coming. It's a particularly fraught decision in the age of social media, when viewers can vent their fury as the unthinkable and (for some) unacceptable occurs. If you hadn't read George R.R. Martin's "A Game of Thrones," you were almost certainly gobsmacked during the first season when Sean Bean's Ned Stark, the seeming protagonist of the series, was cruelly executed by that twerp Joffrey Lannister. Twitter caught fire that night, with irate newcomers to Martin's saga pledging to never watch another episode. If you had read Martin's novel, you were giddy with anticipation in knowing much, much worse was yet to come.
For any writer with a shred of integrity, death is always on the table. You go where the story needs to go.

Acclaimed director Ryan Coogler's vampire thriller, Sinners, keeps sinking its teeth into the film industry with strong early success, adding further credence to his successful partnership with long-time collaborator Michael B. Jordan. Having worked with Jordan for over a decade, Coogler admits he always saw him as a "real movie star" in the making.
Speaking with GQ, Coogler delved into how his creative partnership with Jordan started, with Sinners being their fifth collaboration. After Jordan established himself as a TV star in The Wire, All My Children and Friday Night Lights, Coogler thought the actor could seamlessly transition to movies, putting faith in his "incredible" talent.
"I think we got to work together at a very unique time in his career, because he was still doing television at the time and had just been in two movies that had wide releases," he said. "I felt that he really popped...

If you were an actor in the 2010s looking for job security, "The Walking Dead" was not the show for you. The series was famous for killing major characters in a way that makes rewatching the early seasons extra depressing. You'll be enjoying a season 1 scene with Andrea (Laurie Holden), Dale (Jeffrey DeMunn), Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies), and Shane (Jon Bernthal), only to remember that not a single one of them made it past season 3. Some characters did manage to stick around for surprisingly long, like Carol (Melissa McBride) or Daryl (Norman Reedus), but most people on the show only stuck around for two or three seasons tops.
Case in point: Tyreese (Chad Coleman) was introduced midway through season 3 before being killed off halfway through season 5. Admittedly, though, casual fans didn't have much hope for Tyreese in particular, given the early seasons' suspicious tendency of killing off established Black characters...

Sinners Movie Review (Photo Credit – Instagram)
What’s Good: Autumn Durald Arkapaw’s cinematography is genuinely excellent, as is Ludwig Göransson’s score, which will remain super memorable.
What’s Bad: The writing tries and fails to be deep with racial and social conventions, and the structure and pacing are truly defective. The ending fades just too fast.
Loo Break: You can go to the loo anywhere in the first act, and you won’t be missing much as scenes draw out to the limit.
Watch or Not?: Watch only if you are a fan of the actors or the director, as the film could have been so much better.

George R.R. Martin could not accept his defeat after Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling won at the 2001 Hugo Awards. His A Storm of Swords novel lost to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, both published in 2000. His fans were also upset about this, but no one was more bitter than the author himself.
Martin, who rose to fame for writing A Song of Ice and Fire series, has spoken about this in the past a couple of times. He could never let go of the fact that Rowling’s book was chosen over his work, but little did he know that this would happen twice with his two other novels.

The HBO limited series "Band of Brothers" was the most expensive television miniseries at the time, recreating the American military unit Easy Company's European activities during World War II. Executive produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, the series provided an expansive and factually grounded account of American combat involvement in Western Europe during the war. Like Spielberg and Hanks' previous collaboration, the award-winning "Saving Private Ryan," "Band of Brothers" was praised for its stellar cast, realistic action, and expert attention towards historical authenticity. The series still sets the bar of quality for military shows, of any conflict, though there are a number of similar shows fans should check out next.

Idris Elba Darth Vader (Photo Credit – Instagram)
True this: Idris Elba, the man with the voice that could make even Darth Vader sound soft, stepping into the dark side of the Force. Well, Star Wars fans came this close to seeing Elba as the most feared villain in the galaxy. And honestly, had he suited up in that black armor, Star Wars would’ve still been just as legendary, but with a whole lot more swagger.
Elba’s career has been nothing short of a rollercoaster. From BBC roles in Crimewatch to turning heads in The Wire as the smooth-talking Stringer Bell, he’s built a name for himself as one of Hollywood’s most versatile and commanding actors. But what if he had channeled all that charisma and raw power into the Star Wars franchise? Imagine Elba’s deep, velvety voice, not just narrating, but commanding the galaxy. That...

For the better part of the last two decades, Criminal Minds has entertained audiences with its gripping portrayal of criminal profiling, intense psychological drama, and compelling characters.
Not only did the series offer a deep dive into the world of crime and police procedures, but its emotional depth and complex storyline have often captivated viewers.

Even when the characters changed and the series underwent some major changes, throughout the years, the feel has remained the same. However, the show received a new lease of life when it was renewed and revived back in 2022. And according to longtime cast member Paget Brewster, the change has been very welcome.

Disney’s Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 Episode 8 Recap: Why Does Vanessa Help Fisk?
This is an interesting question. For one, Vanessa (You’s Ayelet Zurer) has elevated the business into something profitable and, in some respects, legitimate. Think of Stringer Bell laundering corner profits in The Wire before Avon Barksdale was released from prison. Eliminating Fisk would solve most of her problems regarding power and control.

TV is firmly in its reboot, revival, and reunion era. Shows such as Frasier and Sex and the City have been revisited, with varying degrees of success. Some of these exploits, like the newsmaking Fresh Prince reunion, have added valuable perspective to the original show.
But with all the nostalgia floating around Hollywood, it’s surprising that HBO’s The Wire, a prescient, innovative chronicle of urban blight in America, told through intersecting characters in Baltimore, hasn’t had a large-scale reunion. In the 23 years since the show’s debut,...

Marvel Studios has released six new character posters from Jake Schreier's Thunderbolts*, to tell you exactly what is and what isn't a Thunderbolt - and spotlighting the six main Marvel antiheroes headlining the feature: Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), and John Walker (Wyatt Russell).
While the plot has remained mostly under wraps, the film will follow these six disillusioned castoffs as they find themselves caught in a death trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), forcing them to band together and face the darkest corners of their past - as well as take on a threat unlike any the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ever seen: Sentry (Lewis Pullman).

Isn’t it weird to think that, in some alternate universe, Jimmy McNulty had the potential to be Jake Peralta? On the iconic TV show The Wire, Detective Jimmy McNulty is a cop who will bend every rule just to prove he’s right. HBO’s The Wire might revolve around The Crown star Dominic West’s character, Detective James McNulty, and his team of investigators, but one cannot overlook the sheer dominance of Frankie Faison’s Ervin H. Burrell. Although he wasn’t your classic hero, Burrell sure knew how to play the dirty game of politics and master the art of beating the rigged system.
While others fought for justice, Ervin H. Burrell appeared to be fighting for survival. With the mayor breathing down his neck and city council members scheming constantly, he didn’t just follow the rules—he bent them. Burrell knew the game was rigged, but instead of whining about it, he played it like a pro. So, here’s a tribute to his bureaucratic manipulation.

Dominic West may now be known for his role in The Crown as Prince Charles of Wales, but he had his Hollywood breakthrough as Detective McNulty in The Wire. The HBO series is often considered to be one of the best TV shows of all time and stands along with stalwarts like The Sopranos, Mad Men, and Breaking Bad in the ‘golden age of TV’.
Despite all the appreciations it received, including recognition from former-President Barack Obama, The Wire never won an Emmy and was only nominated twice for Outstanding Writing for a TV Series – Drama. When asked which season of the show should have won the award, West cited season 4 as the clear winner.

It's no surprise when fans hear about the various ways The Sopranos changed television and ushered in a new cinematic approach to the medium. Before 1999, network television was the only format viewers were accustomed to, and with that format came specific rules that showrunners and producers had to adhere to. It's an interesting history when discussing the cinematic arts because cinema alone is already a fairly young medium, and television is even younger, with its greatest advancements coming as early as twenty-five years ago. There's a reason why, for decades, filmmakers and actors considered television to be a second-rate medium. Many stars were accustomed to avoiding TV because it essentially meant the end of their movie career. This is because television wasn't viewed as an artful medium in comparison to feature films.

Even with great dramas like Succession and The Wire, The Sopranosremains one of the best TV drama shows of all time. From its iconic opening credits song to its deep examination of masculinity, culture and mental health – which TV rarely discussed openly in 1999 – The Sopranos redefined TV storytelling and character studies, inspiring later greats like Mad Men and Breaking Bad.
At the heart of The Sopranos is the concept of family and relationships, and the series puts its dynamic and deep characters into extraordinary situations. We’re living in the golden age of geek TV, treated to an embarrassment of weekly riches dumped right onto our screens, delivering us new slices of the most treasured franchises we have, made with huge budgets. Brought to life by David Simon and based on his book Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets, The Wire is one of the most critically acclaimed police procedural dramas of the modern era. However, before The Wire came to fruition, Simon was involved with a similar procedural based in Baltimore, Homicide: Life on the Street. Airing from 1993 to 1999, Homicide: Life on the Street was one of a few procedural dramas that gained notable popularity among critics and audiences, along with Law & Order and NYPD Blue. Early seasons featured a cast that included Yaphett Kotto, Andre Braugher, Melissa Leo, Ned Beatty, and Daniel Baldwin. Significantly, it would be the first appearance of John Munch, portrayed by Richard Belzer, who would go on to resurrect the character in Law and Order: Svu years later.
