News this week came in that the final planned Divergent Series movie would be skipping the theaters and go direct to television/DVD. It’s a rare move for such a major studio franchise to make, and it got me to thinking about other movie series that fizzled and did the same. Come inside to check out a history of downward sliding franchises!
If I come off sounding a bit harsh about all this, it’s mostly due to the fact that it’s such a bizarre situation. It’s been awhile since a studio franchise had to dropped down to direct-to-television and it’s not a good thing. Sure, Lionsgate is trying to spin the information that it’s part of a planned way to jumpstart a spin-off TV series...but the reality is this isn’t how they wanted The Divergent Series to end.
It’s a failure,...

For a movie who’s most famous tag line is “there can be only one,” there are sure a ton of Highlander sequels, TV spinoffs (live action and animated), novels, comic books, and reboots. But that should come as no surprise; this is Hollywood, and the immortal Scottish swordsman epic is one of the most indelible franchises of the past 30 years.
The original Highlander arrived in 1986, and is easily the most hallowed of all Highlander properties, featuring the holy triumvirate of genre stars: Christopher Lambert (NCIS: La, Greystoke: The Legend Of Tarzan, Lord Of The Apes, Mortal Kombat), Sean Connery (The James Bond, Dr. Jones, The Rock, The Untouchables, The Hunt For Red October), and Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption, Starship Troopers, ER, Flubber, Pet Sematary II, John Dies At The End, and ubiquitous voice actor). The hit spawned Highlander 2: The Quickening (1991), a TV show starring Adrian Paul that...

The film culture of the early-21st century has been dominated by sequels, prequels, reboots and franchises. The growing insecurity of Hollywood in the face of piracy, the rise of online media and a resurgence in TV drama, has all led to a multitude of sequels designed to perpetuate the money-making ability of an idea for as long as humanly possible. In the process we’ve ended up with a lot of bad sequels, and today we’re marking the 10 follow-up films that we really could have done without.
For the purposes of this list I am discounting sequels that were straight-to-video, straight-to-dvd or even straight-to-tv like Highlander: The Source. This is because these were generally seen by far too few people to have done any real damage to a franchise: even if you hate American Psycho II or the straight-to-video Disney sequels, they’ve not resulted in their respective...

Update: Details of the film itself are still sketchy, but Deadline reports that Fishburne has now been joined in The Colony's hungry, snowy wastes by Bill Paxton. Game over, man....If you find that the thought of cannibals in a snowy, futuristic landscape dredges up unhappy memories of Highlander: The Source, there's hope in store. Like a staff member at Rekall, Laurence Fishburne will replace that memory for you, when he turns out for The Colony, which is just about to start shooting in Toronto. It's a sci-fi thriller about a group of ragged survivors attempting to sit out an ice age, while fending off attacks from feral cannibals. Think that bit in The Road with Garret Dillahunt, then reimagine it as a sci-fi comic book, and you may have something. Oh, wait, that's The Book Of Eli.Fishburne's specific role hasn't been made clear, but it's looking likely...

Pick Of The Week:
Savage Streets (DVD)
Brenda’s got a switchblade and she knows how to use it… See Linda Blair (The Exorcist) take bloody revenge on a gang of low down dirty street punks in Savage Streets, a brutal journey into rape, violence, switchblades and bear traps. When Brenda (Blair) and her all-girl gang of tough talking chicks, The Satins, refuse to party with a car full of local drug pushers called The Scars, the girls think nothing of it, but they didn’t reckon on the bruised ego of Jake and his feral pack of no good thugs. Targeting Brenda’s deaf sister, they invade the school and savage her, leaving her on the critical list. Now Brenda must scour the streets in...

Utter ludicrousness arrives in the form of “Stonehenge Apocalypse”, an opportunistic made for TV outing aiming to cash in on the semi success of the considerably flashier and more glamorous “2012”. Director Paul Ziller certainly has a great deal of experience in the low budget disaster movie arena, having helmed the likes of “Solar Strike”, “Polar Storm” and the excellently titled “Ice Quake”, not to mentioned a long list of cheap creature features including “Beyond Loch Ness”, “Snakehead Terror”, “Swarmed” and more. The film has a relatively recognisable cast made up of television stars, headlined by Misha Collins (“Supernatural”), with support from Hill Harper (“CSI: NY”), Torri Higginson (“Stargate: Atlantis”) and Peter Wingfield (“Highlander: The Source”). Coming with an all important behind the Scenes featurette and trailer, the film is out now on region 2 DVD thanks to Anchor Bay Entertainment. The film follows Collins as Jacob Glaser, a formerly respected and...

You probably read other movie sites, so you may have already seen articles decrying the idea of Melissa Rosenberg taking on screenwriting duties for Summit’s Highlander remake. Some of them do so just by headlining “Twilight writer set to write Highlander remake.” Pretty gruesome idea, eh? Let me re-title that: “Dexter writer set to write Highlander remake.” Much better. The internet has a short term memory, and even though Rosenberg was brandished with the golden albatross of adapting a group of books with more sizzle than steak in them (aimed at an audience most website runners don’t find themselves in), she also had the good fortune to showcase her talents on a television program with violence, depth, humor, and action. Her abilities in those arenas make her a perfect choice for taking on the material. The bigger question is whether the world needs a reboot of Highlander. Why not? It...

Summit Entertainment has brought on Twilight screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg to write the reboot of Highlander, according to THR’s Heat Vision Blog.
Justin Lin (Fast Five) is still attached to direct Highlander, something we first reported back in September of 2009. The first draft of the script was written by Iron Man writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway and a second one was written by Cormac and Marianne Wibberley.
I am a huge fan of The Highlander franchise which first began with the 1986 film, Highlander, that starred Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery. The story centers on Connor McLeod, a Scotish swordsman who discovers he’s part of an immortal race of warriors. He must square off against an evil barbarian to determine who is the last survivor and win the ultimate prize.

Gregory Widen was just an undergraduate in the screenwriting program at UCLA when he wrote a script entitled Shadow Clan for a class assignment. He sold the script for $200,000 to producers William Panzer and Peter S. Davis, who then sent it to be re-written. Add one music video director (Russell Mulcahy), a charismatic leading man (Christopher Lambert) and an ensemble cast, and film history was made. While not a box office success on release in 1986, Highlander did well overseas, and gained a cult following on home video, eventually leading to five sequels, three spin-off television series, an animated direct-to-video movie, books, comic books, video games and a slew of quotable lines (as well as many welts, since my friends and I spent many hours with makeshift swords fighting each other). Highlander has become a cult classic in the hearts of many.

The current economic crisis is proving a nightmare for many people. Especially Martin Pyrite, the central character of The Glass Man , a new psychological horror thriller now filming on London locations starring Andy Nyman ( Severance , Black Death , Dead Set ), James Cosmo ( Outcast ) and Scream Queen Neve Campbell. The compact chiller is written and directed by Cristian Solimeno (star of Mother of Tears and Highlander: The Source ) who calls it "An exploration of the fears regular people have in the real world, the dark places they have to go in times of extreme stress, forced to cross a line they never dreamt they.d get even close to." Andy Nyman describes the premise: In a nutshell The Glass Man is about a guy with a nice middle class lifestyle who works in...

Like a lightening bolt out of nowhere, we received word today that not only is Summit definitely going forward with a remake of Highlander, but they've got a director and producer signed on as bold proof of their throwing caution to the wind. Pretty soon they'll be able to throw the phrase "From the Director and Producer of Fast & Furious comes Highlander" because Justin Lin is going to be sitting squarely in the director's chair while Neil Moritz will be producing. And as if you weren't thrilled enough, Peter Davis, who produced the original, is also along for the ride. I can't say I know whether they are headed (get it?) in the right direction here, because I'm frankly not sure if there is a right direction for this sort of thing. It's been 23 since the original came out, and with the unwatchable reality of the most recent entry (Highlander: The Source), they might as well be...

Back in May, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Summit Entertainment is bringing Highlander back to the big screen. The 1986 sci-fi cult hit starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown as immortal beings who battled humans and each other. Lambert played Scottish swordsman Connor MacLeod, Connery portrayed the memorable Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez and Clancy was a barbarian known as the Kurgan. The film with the “There can be only one” tagline spawned four sequels and three television series. There are those of us who think reboots of properties like Highlander, Flash Gordon and Poltergeist are completely unwanted and unnecessary. Yet there are others. The type of Joe’s who couldn’t get enough of Sci-Fi Channel’s Highlander: The Source last year. This is the spoiler page for those Joe’s. While, admittedly, there aren’t many actual “spoilers” ahead - stay tuned for updates as Highlander: The...
