As devoted a cinephile as he is a visionary filmmaker, Guillermo del Toro will take every opportunity to lavish praise on his favorite films. In a recent Reddit Ama (“Ask me Anything”) to promote “The Shape of Water,” the director could hardly contain his enthusiasm for Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird,” which he said “moved [him] deeply.” He continued: “‘Lady Bird’ is a fantastic first film. Such intelligence and acute eye for drama and cinema. Deceivingly natural, full of style.”
More in line with his style, Del Toro is a huge fan of George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which he called, “A masterpiece. In many ways, So kinetic, so dense, as to be digested slowly and in repeated viewings. A God at work.” He also loved Pixar’s “Coco, which was co-directed by Mexican-American filmmaker Adrian Molina. “The More World-themed stories, the better for all us storytellers,” said del Toro.

The hits keep on coming. Both “The Disaster Artist” (A24) and “The Shape of Water” (Fox Searchlight) opened strong, despite the usual strong-fall off in post-Thanksgiving audiences. Last year the month of November saw only one specialized release, “Manchester By the Sea,” pull an opening platform per theater average over $60,000. This year has already seen five.
“The Disaster Artist” (in 11 markets) showed the best performance in New York/Los Angeles of any title this year (nearly $120,000 per theater), besting last weekend’s numbers for “Call Me By Your Name” (Sony Pictures Classics). They join other Oscar-bound strong openers including “Lady Bird” (A24) and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (Fox Searchlight).
This marks unprecedented strength over such a short period, with “Lady Bird” and “Three Billboards” already performing well in wider release. At some point exhibitors are going to be challenged to handle so many hits (all will not go wide...

Track my film passions of the past year and the result is this list. These are the films that wowed and moved me, that turned me into a rabid champion, that gave me hope that brilliant cinematic storytelling — and a rebel spirit — is alive and well. It turned out to be a strong year for women directors (five), romances (three), World War II dramas (two), Angelina Jolie movies (two), animation (one), and documentaries (one).

Now that Justice League‘s theatrical release is merely days away, it’s only expected that we wake up to find new goodies greeting us each morning throughout the week. Heck, we already learned a little more about J.K. Simmons’ debuting Commissioner Gordon just this morning.
So, aside from the usual quotes offered by the cast, we’ve found that there’s also no shortage of promotional photos to be glimpsed. Truth be told, this is the norm for blockbusters of this magnitude, but there’s something even more special about the whole experience when you consider this is the first time that DC’s premier superhero team will be coming together for a live action cinematic adventure. Suffice it to say, whether you grew up on the Super Friends or the Justice League/Justice League Unlimited animated series, this is probably a flick you’ve been waiting your entire life for.

James Toback, director of Tyson and Black And White, has been accused of sexual harassment by 38 women, according to an article in yesterday's Los Angeles Times. The claims are remarkably similar in nature and allege that the director approached women in New York, persuaded them to accompany him to secluded places for auditions, then asked them explicit sexual questions and proceeded to masturbate in front of them.
Toback, 72, denies all the claims, saying that he doesn't remember meeting any of the women. He asserted that health issues would have made it impossible for him to behave as described.
Toback was proud of his flirtatiousness and titled a film based on his own life The Pick-Up Artist. He also directed 2013 documentary Seduced And Abandoned, which sets out to expose the way films are made and is rife with casual sexism, including a deeply uncomfortable...

Ever since Jodie Whittaker was announced as the Thirteenth Doctor back in July, Doctor Who fans have been dying to find out more about this new incarnation of the show. Now, we finally have all the juicy details thanks to a press release straight from the BBC.
First up, we can tell you who’ll be joining Whittaker in the Tardis. Yes, it turns out that those earlier rumours were right and British comedian Bradley Walsh is stepping on board the time machine as the Doctor’s latest companion. Apparently, he’ll be playing a character named Graham.
The twist is, though, that the Doctor and Graham will have two other friends joining them on their travels. Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill (both previously seen in British soap opera Hollyoaks) are signing up for regular roles on the sci-fi show. Cole will be playing Ryan while Gill will take on the part of Yasmin.

Produced by Orson Welles, Julien Derode
Directed by Orson Welles
Shakespeare didn’t invent Orson Welles but he did define him; it can be said that if any one director took arms against the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, it was the man behind Citizen Kane, Touch of Evil and Chimes at Midnight. The 1952 production of Othello is exhibit A.
Filmed over a turbulent three year period in and around Morocco, Venice and Rome, Welles was bedeviled by an ever-changing cast and crew resulting in reshoots by five different cinematographers and assembled by four different editors. The sound recording was a joke.

One thing some folks may not know about me is that I’m a huge Diy-er when it comes to the holidays, and that’s especially true for Halloween. Sometimes store-manufactured props and decorations can come with a hefty price tag attached, so for those of you who like to keep things simple and cheap, here are ten relatively quick and inexpensive outdoor decorating ideas that you can use this Halloween.
And don’t worry if you don’t consider yourself a crafty person, either. Most of these are so easy, even kids can get involved, which means you should do just fine if you follow the directions and remember to have fun with it, too. Happy haunting!

Roles in Inception and The Dark Knight Rises may have sent his career into overdrive, but fans have been devoted to British actor Tom Hardy for much longer than that. Many have been watching him since that first menacing turn in Star Trek: Nemesis in 2002 (he's the only actor to have played both a Batman and a Star Trek villain). The hot dad then spent years balancing indie films and period dramas before he conquered Hollywood. A few early adopters may have been in love with him for over a decade, but we've been trying to pinpoint the exact moment the world really sat up and paid attention . . . and we've settled on 2009. Why? If you've not seen him in Wuthering Heights with his wife, Charlotte Riley, do yourself a favor and hunt it down. And take a look at our photo chronology for more proof that was the year when everything changed for him!

In what should have been a welcome reunion between two sisters, Game of Thrones season 7 has found Arya and Sansa Stark at loggerheads, thanks in large part to Littlefinger’s calculated meddling.
Since returning to Winterfell, Maisie Williams’ character has spent time walking the castle’s cavernous corridors and generally re-familiarizing herself with her rightful home – something that Arya has not done in years. But it didn’t take long before the young Stark grew suspicious of Littlefinger, who has been whispering in Sansa’s ear ever since he marshaled the Knights of the Veil into the Battle of the Bastards.
All of this came to a head in last week’s instalment, “Beyond the Wall,” and though some fans have criticized the subplot brewing between Arya and Sansa as weak and inconsequential, Game of Thrones director Alan Taylor told Huffington Post that that dispute will lead to “violent” and “surprising” consequences.

“Having fun in #Reno,” the 51-year-old captioned the photo of the new couple in front of a private plane. Rossdale was in “The Biggest Little City in the World” to play a show with his band, Bush.
The photo marks the first time Rossdale has acknowledged a new woman in his life following his split from wife of nearly 13 years, Gwen Stefani. He...

For fans of HBO’s Game of Thrones, there is no shortage of destinations and itineraries to visit the real-life filming locations behind the seven kingdoms. However many of these bucket-list trips come with a hefty price tag.
Wanderu created an itinerary that makes it possible for travelers on a budget to visit some of the series’ most memorable locations — for under $100.

Forget winter: Sunday — and Game of Thrones‘ Season 7 premiere — is coming.
If you’re one of the devoted (but busy!) fans of HBO’s fantasy series, there’s a good chance you’re not up to speed on the goings-on in Westeros. Or Meereen. Or the Iron Islands. Or Dorne. Man, they really spread the action all over in Season 6, didn’t they?
Because you have eyes and have ostensibly visited the Internet at some point in the last year, you probably are aware that Jon Snow survived his Season 5 beat-down. But how? And what happened next? Did Daenerys ever make it home?...

Game of Thrones will launch its latest worldwide touring exhibition this fall. The trek will begin in Europe. It's unclear when the exhibit will arrive in the United States.
The show will feature props, costumes and set decorations from the hit HBO show, as well as various immersive and interactive exhibits. Recreations of Westeros and Essos includes locales like King's Landing, the North, the conquered city of Meereen, the House of Black and White, Castle Black, the lands Beyond the Wall and, of course, the Iron Throne Room.

If anything, September will be an important month for Marvel because, if all goes according to plan, they’ll be just about ready to put their currently in progress crossover event, Secret Empire, behind them and poised to move forward with whatever their next major initiative may be. And while we haven’t been in contact with any flies on the walls over at the House of Ideas, we’re pretty sure the Marvel Legacy one-shot is the vanguard.
First, let’s talk a bit about Secret Empire because that seems like the logical thing to do. Not long ago, it was revealed that a tenth issue would be added to the limited series, something not unheard of when it comes to major events – especially those from Marvel. And although this would seem like a definitive end to the story, there where rumors swirling that an eleventh wasn’t out of the question.
From what we can tell, that’s not going to happen, but an epilogue of sorts in Secret Empire Omega #1 has been announced. Upon examining the solicitation below, it quickly becomes apparent that this will likely be an essential read given that it retains the very same creative team that worked on the mainline series itself.

Secret Empire Aftermath!
• Hydra has fallen, but the world is still not secure! As the heroes of the Marvel Universe stir from the wreckage of the battlefield, the inevitable rebuilding must begin.
• However, one question hangs in the air over the proceedings: What redemption can there be for Captain America?
40 Pgs./Rated T+ …$4.99
Should that meet its targeted September release – which may be a feat, especially when you consider that Secret Empire #6 has been delayed until July 19 – that’ll smoothly transition into the all important Marvel Legacy #1 (solicitation below). So, if the publisher does allow it to ship before Secret Empire concludes, we can only hope that it doesn’t completely spoil the crossover’s ending. But, then again, let’s not forget this is the same lot that released Who Will Wield The Shield? before Captain America: Reborn wrapped.

Aside from the Met Gala, there’s one event that Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen are almost always guaranteed to show up to: the Cfda Awards. And this year, they did so in true Olsen fashion, with oversize silhouettes, neutral tones and their signature effortless swagger.
Ashley, in a black draping button-down coat and wine-colored clutch and Mary-Kate, in a menswear-inspired button down shirt, navy wide-leg pants and a black clutch, are nominated for the Accessories Designer of the Year award (which they won back in 2014) for their clothing and accessory line, The Row. And rightfully so. The brand boasts some of the priciest — and chicest — handbags on the market, with a $34,000 alligator backpack, among other designs.

Taking a break from playing Disney sidekicks, Josh Gad will add his interpretation of Truman Capote to the cinematic canon in the upcoming film Party Of The Century, about the author’s famous Black And White Ball. According to a release, the story is not entirely centered on Capote—instead, it focuses on the romance between a fictional starlet played by Chloë Grace Moretz and Jack O’Connell’s elevator operator. So it’s more in the vein of a Me And Orson Welles or My Week With Marilyn-type project about people who have brushes with legends.

More than sixty years after the release of “Seven Samurai,” Akira Kurosawa’s legendary epic continues to leave its mark on Hollywood. While the film is widely known to have led to the 1960 remake “The Magnificent Seven,” directed by John Sturges, “Seven Samurai” has also inspired filmmakers like George Miller as recently as 2015, when he released his epic sci-fi action film, “Mad Max: Fury Road.”
A new video from Fandor explains in depth just how wide ranging the influence of “Seven Samurai” can be felt. While films with enormous battle scenes like “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” and “The Matrix Revolutions” unsurprisingly borrowed visual elements from Kurosawa, some unexpected titles that were inspired by the plot of “Seven Samurai” include John Landis’ “Three Amigos” and “A Bug’s Life.”

HBO invites you to remember the gaping hole in your life.
That classic saying “a picture’s worth a thousand words” often seems hyperbolic. However, a thousand words (or, you know, two thousand) for fifteen pictures, especially when those fifteen pictures happen to be our first real, official look at the new series of Game of Thrones, seems a lot more reasonable. There was that trailer released a little while back, but it felt like more of a “look at this promotional thing we filmed” stunt rather than bonafide glimpse at future episodes. As such, it really did nothing for me. However, the fifteen images released by HBO last Thursday have set my fannish heart all aflutter. In these fifteen images, HBO has laid out pretty much 90% of the reasons why we love Game of Thrones, which is actually pretty damn impressive (note the absence of any Dorne-affiliated places or persons). Though on the whole the images...
