Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton will soon show their unity (spelled u.n.i.t.y.) workin’ 9-to-5 as gospel singers with young star Keke Palmer in the movie “Joyful Noise.” What a way to make a livin’!
According to Variety, “the film follows two women who join forces to prevent a small-town gospel choir from shutting down. Palmer will play a conservative teen who comes of age during the film.”
What rite of passage Palmer will face is cloudy, but it should involve her belting out a serious hand-clapping, pew-shaking spiritual and maybe a flirtatious-but-family-friendly romance with a handsome young choir boy.
Palmer first gained notice at age 11 as the title character in “Akeelah and the Bee” (she was ‘Akeelah,’ not the ‘Bee’), and now headlines her own kids sitcom “True Jackson, VP” on Nickelodeon. Before the project went into hiatus, she was tabbed to star in Marvel’s “Runaways.

When it comes to 19th century literary monsters, Bram Stoker's Dracula seems the bigger inspiration on modern Gothic tales thanks to the current vampire craze, but the creature from Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" is definitely the more relevant to the 21st century, as long as man continues pursuits towards human perfection.
Cashing in on this potential are "X-Men" franchise producer Ralph Winter and Terry Botwick ("Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie"), who are adapting Dean Koontz's ongoing series of "Frankenstein" novels, according to Variety. In the series, which continues this May with the release of a fourth book, Koontz updates and re-imagines Shelley's classic novel for present-day, New Orleans-set stories focused on two detectives working cases involving synthetic biological super-humans.
The intent is to turn the books into a film franchise beginning with an adaptation of the first book, "Prodigal Son." And in a way, this should also be considered a reboot,...

'Dragon' ignites $36.5 mil in red-hot weekend at b.o.
The fall boxoffice season is sizzling and showing few signs of cooling off, as ticket sales at theaters across North America were brisk for the fourth consecutive weekend. Universal's Red Dragon led the charge this weekend with $36.5 million on its boxoffice plate -- the biggest opening ever in October, followed by strong sophomore frames from Buena Vista's Sweet Home Alabama, with $21.3 million, and DreamWorks' The Tuxedo, with $10 million. Artisan's Jonah: A Veggie Tales Movie, a G-rated CGI-animated family film, debuted in fewer than 1,000 theaters and took root in the sixth slot with a solid $6.2 million. The three-day total for the 136 films tracked by The Hollywood Reporter was $110.4 million -- up a solid 7% from the four-day Columbus Day holiday weekend last year, which falls a week later in 2002. It marks the first time a three-day weekend in October surpassed $100 million, and it's the fourth consecutive up session compared with last year -- all the more impressive considering that the comparable calendar frame was a four-day holiday.

Audiences hunger for Hannibal as 'Red Dragon' tops boxoffice
Big portions of boxoffice were on the menu for Universal's Red Dragon this weekend as the prequel to Orion's The Silence of the Lambs served up a sizzling estimate of $37.5 million. The boxoffice debut of Dragon surpassed the $28.6 million racked up by Universal's Meet the Parents and easily took the crown as the biggest October opening in history. Buena Vista's Sweet Home Alabama placed second with an estimated $21.6 million, down 39%, upping the estimated cume to date for the Reese Witherspoon starrer to a stellar $65.6 million in a mere 10 days. DreamWorks' The Tuxedo was off a moderate 33% from its debut, grossing an estimated $10.1 million to take the third slot, moving the total for the Jackie Chan-Jennifer Love Hewitt starrer to about $28.1 million. Artisan's CG-animated family film Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie arrived in 940 theaters -- a third to a half of the theaters occupied by the session's top films -- to place sixth with an estimated gross of $6.5 million. IFC's My Big Fat Greek Wedding became the highest-grossing independent film in history as the total boxoffice for the romantic comedy-drama moved up to $148 million -- surpassing the $140.5 million scared up by Artisan's The Blair Witch Project. This weekend, Greek Wedding was in the fourth spot with an estimated $8.5 million, off a scant 10% from a week earlier.
