An unappreciated gem

This show was a rare gem of British family fun. Unappreciated at its time, it came and went without a big fuss.

Although while it was here, even the children at school would be making references to Mr Majeika.

Not as cool and trendy as other shows of its time, it would have been a huge hit just a few years earlier. Bring back shows like this, and we would have a nicer world to live in ;)

Stanley Baxter was a true British treasure, and this was one of his last vehicles. Should have been a bigger bang to an end of a great TV and Film career. Watch if you are a fan of classic British humour and innocent and charming fun.

Stanley Baxter returned to ITV in 1988 to make this charming children's programme, based on books by Humphrey Carpenter. He played 'Mr. Majeika', a failed wizard exiled from his home planet of Walpurgis and sent to Earth. He falls out of the sky, and, after landing in the sleepy English village of Much Barty, takes up residence in a windmill and secures a teaching job at the local school. Critics likened the show favourably to the classic Richard Carpenter series 'Catweazle'. Majeika wore Richard Wattis-styled spectacles and a pudding basin haircut with a tuft of hair that used to waggle whenever he did a magic spell.

Guest stars included Miriam Margolyes, Pat Coombs, Richard Murdoch, Thanks to Baxter's eccentric performance and Jenny McDade's scripts, Mr. Majeika proved popular with audiences of all ages and ran to three seasons. Christopher Gunning wrote a lively theme tune. To date the series has not appeared on DVD, but thankfully it is on You Tube ( although the picture quality leaves a lot to be desired ).
