There’s rarely any filler on an Eric Church record. He’s one country songwriter for whom the concept of the album still matters, and he pays as much mind to his deep tracks as he does his singles. As the North Carolina singer celebrates his 43rd birthday on May 3rd, we look back at the 10 must-hear non-singles of his career.
“Sinners Like Me” (2006)
Church’s 2006 debut album Sinners Like Me introduced him as a powerful new voice in the genre, one unafraid to venture outside the traditional confines of commercial country.

Netflix dropped the trailer for its upcoming drama “Outer Banks” Tuesday, introducing you to the world of some North Carolina teens who would give the high schoolers in “Dawson’s Creek” and “Friday Night Lights” a run for their money in the angst department.
Except on top of the usual romantic problems plaguing every TV teen character, these boys and girls are dealing with a missing person and a deadly treasure hunt.
In the trailer, which you can view above, you’ll meet John B and his crew, the working-class “Pogues” of the Outer Banks. John B’s (Chase Stokes) dad mysteriously disappears at the beginning of the summer and as the gang searches for him, they stumble upon clues that point them in the direction of a bounty of gold. But searching for that treasure — while falling in and out of love — could prove to be a fatal expedition.

Through the lens of social distancing and quarantines, Jonathan Wilson’s new album, Dixie Blur, released March 6th, seems made for this moment. It’s a bittersweet, nostalgic record that recalls both a time and a place that’s impossible to revisit. For Wilson specifically, that’s his native Thomasville, North Carolina, but the message is universal: You can’t go home again.
“I went back to North Carolina not too long ago, to my hometown, and took some footage for a video,” says Wilson a few days before the LP’s release.

Taking place in the early 1970s in Mexico City, Netflix's Roma is a semibiographical take on the life of Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón, following a formative year in the life of a middle-class family and their live-in housekeeper. The film allowed Netflix to score its first-ever Oscar nomination for best picture.
Yalitza Aparicio, who makes her debut in the film as Cleodegaria "Cleo" Gutiérrez, one of the family's maids, also became the first Indigenous woman (and only the second Mexican woman) to get an Oscar nomination for best actress. Another exciting individual honor for the film: a best supporting actress nomination for Marina de Tavira, who plays Sra. Sofía, the secretive mother of four and matriarch of the family.

Oscar-winning actress Kathy Bates has settled a breach of contract lawsuit against film producer Martin Bregman. The Misery star was seeking at least $1.25 million in damages against allegations that Bregman reneged on a deal for her to star in a film tentatively titled of Carolina Torn Asunder - now known as Carolina. According to the August 2001 lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, Bates had a "pay-or-play" agreement with Bregman and his production company that guaranteed $1.25 million whether or not the flick was made or she was in it. The About Schmidt star alleges she participated in a week of rehearsals and a week of pre-production but didn't get the role of Grandma Mirabeau - which later went to Shirley MacLaine.
