From one 1999 horror remake to another. After rewatching The Haunting with eyes that were both more critical and 25 years older, it got me thinking about the other remake that came out that year. One that was a remake of a far sillier movie and that was the first effort from a new studio, namely Dark Castle Entertainment. The original was from a far less dark castle in that of schlock and gimmick purveyor William Castle and it starred Vincent Price as a man offering strangers money to stay in an allegedly haunted house for a night. While The Haunting failed on multiple levels to improve with age, how does House on Haunted Hill (watch it Here) look after a quarter of a century? Does its cheesy yet graphic tone feel at home in the time of A24 and elevated horror or should it forfeit its 1 million dollar check and leave the cursed grounds forever.

The popularity of Arrowhead Game Studio’s Helldivers 2 is not hidden from anyone. This game is gradually increasing and getting better with every passing day. One thing that’s not happening is that it’s not coming to Xbox consoles anytime soon. Despite a bunch of Xbox owners asking for a port again and again, both developer Arrowhead Game Studios and publisher Sony have chosen not to respond.
As they wait for a response, Xbox owners are no doubt getting restless, and it makes sense too. The game has already been out for more than a month, and there’s no news of Xbox ports anywhere. Hence, these fans have decided to go the other way, finding a similar experience on Xbox itself. And Reddit has responded with three games as the best choices for this purpose.

Helldivers 2 is an incredible game; there’s no doubt about this. This game owes its growing success to a bunch of factors. The fact that this game is so approachable and easy to get into is one of the factors. The fact that its developers are continuously allowing this game to grow in unexpected directions is another. Not only are PlayStation 5 and PC owners loving it, but Xbox owners are also asking for its release on their preferred console.
The best part about Helldivers 2 is its ever-growing nature. This game is continuously changing thanks to its special scenario director, Joel. Its popularity is such that developers are already getting requests for a crossover. Whom should they go with?

The retired Rms Queen Mary docked in Long Beach, California is considered one of the most haunted locations in the world — which only somewhat shines through in Gary Shore’s Haunting of the Queen Mary. Any wishes to relive Dark Castle Entertainment levels of production design in Ghost Ship won’t be fulfilled, but that said, Haunting of the Queen Mary is more successful than its brushed-under-the-rug release undersells. Shore and co-writer Tom Vaughan channel the Queen Mary’s grave history for a supernatural infestation that spans decades, complete with atmospheric haunts akin to what’s accomplished in remakes of Thir13en Ghosts or House on Haunted Hill. Proper spookiness prevails, even though the over two-hour length gunks up the film’s gears with subplots that slow momentum.
Alice Eve stars as Anne Calder, who pitches Queen Mary’s Captain Bittner (Dorian Lough) on a virtual 3D tour experience to resurrect the ship’s reputation.

Some of the most iconic horror films come with a strong opening that demands your attention. Scream’s opening with Casey Becker is referenced until this very day. Final Destination 2‘s car accident calamity still gives people nightmares. Audiences seeing Chrissie being terrorized (and then eaten) by the Great White Shark in Jaws put them on the edge of their seats. The purpose of the opening is to prepare audiences for what’s to come. Though, sometimes the opening can be the best part of any film. Take Ghost Ship. Critics destroyed the Dark Castle feature. Though there’s a fondness amongst horror...

Thailand’s film censors have upset the release of local horror movie “Hoon Payon,” which should have arrived in cinemas pn Thursday.
The film had a successful world premiere screening on Tuesday at a gala in Bangkok. But censors have since intervened to demand five scenes be cut and to impose a 20+ rating on the Five Star Production picture.
The rating means that spectators must be age 20 or older, thus excluding the film’s key teenage demographic, and it obliges cinema operators to check the ID cards of all patrons.
The film’s story involves a man who travels to a village in a border region where his brother, a novice Buddhist monk, has been accused of murder. As more bodies pile up, the man questions the villagers’ blind faith in a supposedly protective doll or mannequin.
The scenes that have caused offense involve the fictional monk engaging in heated...

There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.
The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).
HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

Ghost Ship is one of the many movies that stands out as an example of what could have been a great movie had more people paid attention to the actual story and stopped looking for the jump scares around every corner. The movie could have used a few tweaks here and there to make it better, but overall its dialogue was far better than many horror movies that have been deemed as great over the years, and the overall story is far more interesting than others that people have championed for one reason or another. Before the SnyderVerse, Zack Snyder was one of Warner Bros’ most prominent directors, with him having helmed the wildly successful 300 and Watchmen. While the latter of these two movies didn’t set the world on fire in terms of box office, it still did perfectly decent business, and for his follow-up, Snyder was given a lot of latitude to make what would be his first film based on an original concept, Sucker Punch. The story of a group of female mental patients who enter a fantasy world, the film was met with pretty dismal box office by Snyder’s standards. Critics had a field day with his fantasy epic, and fans mostly dismissed it as a weaker effort for the director.
While Sucker Punch was quickly forgotten once Snyder made Man of Steel and launched his ill-fated DC SnyderVerse, the movie has eked out a bit of a following...

Twenty years ago today, Ghost Ship sailed into theaters and unleashed an unforgettable opening sequence that instantly entered the annals of all-time great cold opens. The stylish introduction ends with an unexpected shock and an insanely high body count. Perhaps it was a bit too effective; that high kill count quickly slows down once Ghost Ship jumps ahead to the present.
No matter the film that followed, this cold open deserves its place among horror’s best opening sequences.
The Steve Beck-directed horror movie was the third release under the genre label Dark Castle Entertainment and his sophomore feature follow-up to 2001’s Th13teen Ghosts. Released in theaters on October 25, 2002, Ghost Ship followed a salvage crew seeking riches from a long-missing Italian cruise ship, the Ms Antonia Graza, only to discover its haunted past shortly after boarding.
The cold open teases some harrowing events that led to the ocean liner’s disappearance forty years ago.

Ghost Ship is a horror movie that was released in 2002 and quickly became a cult classic. It tells the story of a group of cruise ship workers who are targeted by an evil entity that lives on the ship. Ghost Ship is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2022, and we think it deserves to be rewatched. The movie has some great special effects, and it’s still very creepy today. The movie was critically panned during its release, with reviewers tearing the movie apart. One of the more gracious reviews of the movie, from Behind The Lens, wrote: “Not a

Chile’s Santiago International Film Festival (Sanfic) has unveiled the full list of films participating in its upcoming Labs for fiction and documentary features, running under the festival’s Sanfic Industria banner Oct. 27-Nov. 5.
It’s the second such event hosted by the fest this year, although the first to welcome participants in person. In March, a entirely online Industria event was held, where Brazil’s “The Life That’s Left,” Costa Rica’s “Crono-Capsulas” and Chilean drama series “Silver Bridge” and “La Vida de Nosotras” highlighted the field of exciting projects.
“It is not easy to host two industry spaces in the same year and host new productions as powerful as those we will have in this edition, only seven months after our 100% online event,” Industria head Gabriela Sandoval explained to Variety.
Fifteen fiction features will participate in this fall’s – or spring’s if you’re in Chile – lab.

The 2000s were lousy with remakes, some of them good, many of them lousy. Major horror franchises from the 1980s got a makeover; subversive ‘70s horror films received a glossy new coat of paint. One of the best of these remakes – and one which has finally begun getting its due over the last decade, building a cult audience and culminating in a new special edition Blu-ray – is House of Wax from 2005. It reimagines the 1953 Vincent Price classic (itself a remake of 1933’s Mystery of the Wax Museum) for a modern audience: gorier, sexier, and considerably more twisted. I’m certainly not the first to say it, but it’s more a remake of 1979’s underrated Tourist Trap than it is of House of Wax. As a remake of Tourist Trap, it’s pretty fantastic.

Seven Seas Entertainment is pleased to announce “Airship,” a new imprint dedicated to Seven Seas’ ever-growing library of light novels and Japanese prose novels. The Airship imprint, like the existing Seven Seas Ghost Ship imprint that targets mature readers, will be aimed at a specific audience–in this case, light novel fans. Light novels, a popular format of prose novels with intermittent manga-style illustrations, have increasingly inspired manga and anime adaptations in Japan. The category has enjoyed a surge of popularity among teen and adult readers globally over the last decade, including Seven Seas light novel hits Classroom of the Elite, I’m in Love with the Villainess, and Didn’t I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?!
“We’ve been publishing light novels from Japan since 2006, when there were only a handful in the North American market,” says Seven Seas publisher Jason DeAngelis. “But in the last several years,...

Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman are no longer proceeding with development of Ghost Ship, a TV series about the 2016 fire that broke out in a former warehouse that had been converted into an artist collective, claiming the lives of 36 people.
The project was announced last Tuesday as part of a development slate the husband-and-wife duo of Chabon and Waldman are building under a multi-year overall deal at CBS TV Studios. It sparked immediate backlash and anger by relatives of the victims, leading to Chabon and Waldman’s decision to abandon the idea for the time being.
“We believe in the power of art, and specifically of this medium, to effect change, and had hoped to harness that power not just on behalf of the victims of this tragedy but also to help to call to account those who most bear responsibility for it,” the duo said in a statement provided to Deadline.

Michael Chabon's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Kavalier and Clay is finally coming to the screen.
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, Michael Chabon's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about two cousins who create a comic book superhero during World War II, is coming to Showtime!
According to Variety, the series commitment is part of a larger, multi-year deal Chabon and his producing partner Ayelet Waldman, have signed with CBS TV. Chabon is currently making Star Trek: Picard for the studio, which will keep him busy through the first part of 2020, when he will transition from showrunning Picard to showrunning Kavalier and Klay. This means that we likely won't get any substantial updates on the Kavalier and Clay TV series until later in the year. Chabon's Picard partners Akiva Goldsman and Alex Kurtzman are also attached to Kavalier and Clay as producers.

It’s that time of year, and of month, again. October means Halloween, pumpkins and trick-or-treating, but now is also when we get to feast our eyes upon all the new horror movies coming to Netflix.
Of course, we’ll be losing a few of our favorites, too. When September ends, Eight Legged Freaks and Ghost Ship, among others will be gone. If you’re a fan of witches, cursed statues and Stephen King, though, then next month is your time.
For starters, we have 2009’s The Figurine arriving on the streaming platform, which is reminiscent of a certain Supernatural episode involving a lucky rabbit’s foot. It follows two boys who find a cursed statue in the woods that gives whoever finds it seven years of good luck, followed by seven years of the opposite.
Another adaptation of a King horror novella, In The Tall Grass, is also on the way.

Top Hollywood producer Joel Silver has exited his production company Silver Pictures, Variety has confirmed.
“Joel Silver recently indicated that he intends to leave Silver Pictures and go out on his own,” Hal Sadoff, a former ICM Partners agent who joined Silver Pictures several years ago as CEO, said in a statement. “We are working with him to define a productive way forward, given his ongoing contractual obligations to the company. Meanwhile, we are continuing to move ahead with our slate of exciting projects and have had very positive discussions with our studio partners around town.”
Silver first founded the prolific film production company in 1980, spawning a number of hit films and television shows including the popular franchises “Lethal Weapon,” “Sherlock Holmes” and “The Matrix” in addition to “Predator,” “Tales From the Crypt,” “V for Vendetta,” “The Book of Eli,” “Veronica Mars,” “House on Haunted Hill,” “Ghost Ship” “Non-Stop” and “The Nice Guys.

[Note: With the film now available on Blu-ray, here's a reposting of my original review of the fantastic British gothic horror Crucible of the Vampire - Phil]
“British horror”, as a genre, has never really gone away but in recent years it seems that this small corner of our cinematic shores has found itself once again. Shying away from the Carry On-esque mixture of dick and fart gags and horror that once marked out British-made fare, filmmakers have instead returned to the genres more gothic roots, taking inspiration from the likes of Hammer and Tigon – yet stil bringing modern sensibilites and concerns to the fore. It’s that mixture that has borne out some great films over the past few years: The Sleeping Room, The Forgotten, Darkness Wakes, Ghost Ship, Ghosts of Darkness… And you can now add Crucible of the Vampire...

Netflix recently revealed which films would be coming to their library to ring in the New Year, and they’re looking like a great collection for horror fans. Hailing from 2001-2004, you can now stream Jason X, Ghost Ship, Eight Legged Freaks, Gothika, Cellular and The Butterfly Effect. Of course, none of these are stone cold classics, but they’re all worthwhile watches if you can put up with a bit of wonky early noughties CGI and occasionally very hammy acting.
My pick of these would be time travel/parallel universe caper The Butterfly Effect. Sure, Ashton Kutcher might be a bit wooden in it, but I’ve always enjoyed watching him gradually screw up his life more and more with each change he makes to the timeline. I also still find the overblown scene where he wakes up to realize he’s got no arms pretty funny, if only...
