Amazon UK MD Chris Bird was among the latest group of industry execs to appear in front of the UK’s British Film & High-End TV Inquiry this afternoon, during which he revealed how much cash the streamer has invested in content from UK broadcasters for the first time.
“We have spent more than $400 million licensing, co-producing, and co-commissioning content from the UK Public Service Broadcasters,” Bird said. “Not only to make bigger and better shows but we’ve also helped produce everything from Steve McQueen’s Small Axe and Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag to the recently announced second and third seasons of The Night Manager with the BBC.”
Deadline was first to break news of The Night Manager returning with Tom Hiddleston signed on to star.

The Star Wars film series is still expanding and has grown in recognition over the years. Innumerable actors have contributed to the property as the galaxy far, far away continues to grow through projects for both small and large screens. Some of them even lose track of how they came to be cast in the first place. Take Keira Knightley, for example.
Known for her acclaimed performances in Pride and Prejudice and The Imitation Game, the actress, 39, also had a role in the Star Wars film franchise that was a long-kept secret.
Keira Knightley in Love Actually
Surprisingly, Knightley’s involvement in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999) wasn’t a big deal at the time, as she was not a known face playing a bit part in the background. Even more intriguingly, she was cast for the role because of how much she resembled Natalie Portman when...

A TV series made entirely by generative AI is only three-to-five years away, according to the director of hits including Slow Horses and Anthony Hopkins movie One Life.
James Hawes spoke with legal teams at SAG-AFTRA and the WGA and undertook a poll with fellow directors and VFX workers after the BBC canceled long-running drama Doctors, in which he probed the likelihood of a fully AI series, he revealed today.
“The best guess was three to five years,” he told the British Film & High-End TV Inquiry. “Someone will say, ‘Create a scene in an ER room where a doctor comes in and he’s having an affair with a woman and they’re flirting, and someone is dying on the table,’ and [AI] will start to create it. Actress Keira Knightley gained significant popularity in the 2000s and it’s hard to not talk about 2003’s Love Actually when we talk about her success. While the movie was very important for the actress’ career, Knightley has one regret: wearing a hat in a scene in the movie. It may have looked out of place but there was a particular reason why she wore it.

Knightley once revealed that she wore the hat in order to hide acne. It was natural for her as she was just a teenager back then, but she preferred the hat instead of makeup to cover the pimple. Love Actually made Knightley a household name and created bigger opportunities for the star.

Berlin-based producer/distributor Dcm has taken a sake in Wim Wenders’ production company Road Movies, creating an “equal, strong partnership” between the two firms, Wenders and Dcm said Friday.
Dcm, which has released several of Wenders’ films in Germany, including the Oscar-nominated Perfect Days, will buy into Road Movies in the first quarter of this year. Dcm partners Dario Suter, Christoph Daniel, Marc Schmidheiny and Joel Brandeis described the move as a strategic expansion of the company’s film production business. Bend It Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha has a new, contemporary adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in the works.
With films including Bhaji On The Beach, Bend It Like Beckham and Blinded By The Light, Gurinder Chadha has long since established herself as a filmmaker capable of tackling contemporary subjects with a lightness of touch and broad appeal.
It’s a style that’s set to continue with her film for Disney – more on that in a sec – and another project we hadn’t previously learned about: a modern adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.
As reported by Variety, the film came to light when Chadha was in the UK’s House of Commons and talking about the state of the British film industry. There, she revealed that her Christmas Carol would have a British Indian protagonist. Her “Scrooge is an Indian Tory who hates refugees,” she said.

The boss of the UK Cinema Association (Ukca) has said that British cinemagoers are not being fed enough quality local movies to get them back to movie theaters with the frequency of the pre-Covid era.
According to Phil Clapp, most pre-Covid cinemagoers are now happy to check out movies at their local theater from time to time, but frequency is the issue. If an average person was going to the cinema six times per year before the pandemic, Clapp floated the notion that they would now be going three to four times.
He placed the blame on a lack of quality local fare amidst a tough time for indie cinema.
“This is because there is nothing we’re putting in front of [cinemagoers] that encourages them to get out,” Clapp told the opening day of the British Film and High-End Television inquiry. “There are cost of living issues within that and...

Chadha said the film is “fun, British and very close to Dickens’ original themes,” telling the story of an Indian Scrooge who votes for the Conservative Party and hates refugees.
She says financing is being provided through a combination of UK tax credits and Kamasa’s True Brit, which Deadline revealed launched late last year with backing from Three Six Zero. Its debut production is Danny Dyer-starrer Marching Powder.

Gurinder Chadha has revealed that she’s making a film based on Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” but one with a distinctly contemporary twist.

Chadha, best known for Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley starrer “Bend it Like Beckham,” also said the film had support from True Brit Entertainment, the new distribution company set up by former Lionsgate U.K. and Europe head and Marv Studios CEO Zygi Kamasa.

‘Tis the season to be streaming. And if you’re going to be streaming, consider streaming some independent films.
With the holidays approaching, streamers are predictably focusing their energy on stocking their libraries with Christmas and family films. As a result, there’s less great non-seasonal indies coming to Netflix, Hulu, Max, and the other major platforms this month than usual. That’s not to say there aren’t a few classics from yesteryear coming our way; Netflix is complimenting its new original “May December” with “Black Swan,” another film that sees Natalie Portman at her scariest. Paramount+ offers up two late ’90s and early ’00s gems with Sofia Coppola’s debut “The Virgin Suicides” and scrappy football charmer “Bend It Like Beckham.” On Prime Video, you can enjoy one of the 2010s best comedies, Andrew Bujalski’s “Support the Girls.” And on Max, you can check out “The Souvenir,...

2023’s big sports biopic is here, and it’s a great time to put on your sports cap and spend some energy feeling motivated by the film. Now, we all know it’s not going to last, so have fun while it does. Nyad tells the inspiring story of long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad (as you may have guessed) on her big adventure of swimming the 110-mile course from Cuba to Key West, Florida. The film is mostly lighthearted and focuses on the teamwork that is required to achieve such a feat. As is common in the biopic world, the sports film stars an ensemble lead cast, with Annette Bening playing the role of relentless swimmer, Diana Nyad while Jodie Foster gets into the skin of her life-long best friend and coach, Bonnie Stoll. It’s rare to see a film that is solely focused on the activities of a woman...

Nothing gold can stay, and to make room for everything new at Hulu in November, we have to say goodbye to dozens of the series and movies on the platform. The streamer will make room for its upcoming Christmas library by losing some of its horror-themed titles throughout the month, including “Stephen King's It,” most of its “Saw” franchise, and “Shaun Of The Dead.” Other major titles leaving the platform include Emma Stone’s breakthrough comedy “Easy A,” the Nora Ephron classic “Sleeping in Seattle,” and more.

Few things in life are as enticing as Tom Hiddleston in a suit, so for some viewers, that might be reason enough to check out the second season of Marvel’s time-traveling series “Loki,” which returned this week and finds the God of Mischief teaming up with Mobius (Owen Wilson) and B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku) to save the Tva after Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) killed He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) at the end of the first season. This morning, Netflix dropped its four-part docuseries Beckham, about the life and times of British footballer and pop-culture icon David Beckham. Directed by Fisher Stevens, the docuseries primarily explores Beckham’s time on the pitch playing for England (and losing in the World Cup), Manchester United, and Real Madrid. Rather puzzlingly, the elements that transformed Beckham into a global superstar off-field, like his modeling career or the film Bend It Like Beckham, are largely ignored. It’s essentially his The Last Dance — an athlete-sanctioned docuseries that delves only into the...

Does it count as a white savior movie if the white character is the one who needs saving? In “Next Goal Wins,” the world’s top-grossing indigenous director, Taika Waititi, retells the story of how American Samoa went from having the world’s worst soccer team to, well, not the worst. While a white man was involved, the movie — which suggests how a film like “Cool Runnings” might be made with 30 years’ more cultural enlightenment — is mostly about how their coach (Michael Fassbender) needs an attitude adjustment. Come to think of it, that’s essentially the formula for most white savior movies.
In 2001, the American Samoa soccer team set a world record. They lost the World Cup Qualification game 31-0. Apparently, they only got worse from there. Enter Fassbender’s character, Thomas Rongen, a hothead with an alcohol problem and an emotional backstory which the movie keeps up its sleeve...

More than 20 years on fans still celebrate what the film did for aspiring female footballers and British-Asian women. And, in the lead-up to this year’s Women’s World Cup, it acts as a gentle reminder that opportunities in women’s sport haven’t been, and still aren’t, always on par with those of men.

Gurinder Chadha revealed that Harrison Ford had an unknowing effect on her ability to get UK hit film Bend it Like Beckham off the ground when she made it two decades ago. At the time, the director was struggling to get financing from any of the UK public film funding bodies so she could make her now treasured film about a young British-Indian girl with a talent for soccer but whose family wouldn’t permit her to play.
Speaking at the annual Winston Baker International Film Finance Forum in Cannes, in partnership with the Marché du Film, she told delegates how difficult it was to get the film off the ground.
“I had been struggling to make this film because I really believed the world was changing at this point and I believed that my cultural paradigm was relevant and I was fresh and new to British film makers,” she said.

The South Asian diaspora has been up for a treat recently with all the love for South Asian representation in shows like Mindy Kaling’s Never Have I Ever or Ms. Marvel Recently, Shekhar Kapoor’s What’s Love Got To Do With It? was also a Pakistani-English film, and Polite Society joins this list of brown meets world. At first impression, Polite Society looks like today’s version of Bend It Like Beckham, but it’s entirely different save for the cultural similarities and English slang. Polite Society is primarily a film about sisters, and then everything else follows. As a close sister myself, I found myself really enjoying this fantasy take on a story about what a younger sibling goes through when her sister leaves her home.
Spoilers Ahead
Plot Synopsis: What Happens In ‘Polite Society’?
Ria and Lena are the inseparable Khan sisters. Ria is in school, aspiring to become a stuntwoman,...

Even for someone who has had a remarkable career, if part of that career includes "Star Wars" in any capacity, that will always be an immortal calling card. Period. Such is the case with Keira Knightley, the star of "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Atonement," among many other big things. But Knightley's first, big break was starring a bit-part in "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" as Sabe, one of the Royal Handmaidens of Naboo who was assigned to Queen Amidala (Natalie Portman). Despite the immortality of it all, Knightley has almost no memory of making the film. Almost.
Speaking to Total Film in 2020 (via GamesRadar), Knightley was reflecting on her impressive career and was asked about her time filming "The Phantom Menace." The film was a gigantic moment in pop culture history, bringing "Star Wars" back to the masses for a new generation after it had been away for the better part of two decades.

Polite Society was previously reviewed at Sundance 2023.
Plot: A young woman (Priya Kansara) studying martial arts becomes convinced something nefarious is afoot when her formally rebellious sister (Ritu Arya) agrees to a marriage arranged by her Pakistani family.
Review: Polite Society is rare for Sundance these days – a crowd-pleasing action comedy. Everything Everywhere All At Once proved there’s a hunger for variations on the genre. Polite Society mixes your classic culture-clash coming-of-age tale (shades of Bend it Like Beckham or Blinded by the Light) with the type of light action comedy the directors in Hong Kong used to turn out regularly. Polite Society is a fun-filled actioner for all ages, featuring wire-fu and a whole bunch of fight scenes.
It helps that director Nida Manzoor (We Are Lady Parts) brings specificity to Polite Society with her being born into a Pakistani Muslim family while living in London, just like the leads.
