When Lynn Swann was working at ABC Sports, as a reporter, he had no choice other than to depart from the show, as host. He'd be replaced by popular game show host, Alex Trebek, who was under contract with both Mark Goodson Productions and Merv Griffin Enterprises.

On the show's premiere date, NBC mistakenly broadcast the pilot to the Eastern and Central time zones. Richard Kline was the host, and the episode featured a different set and announcer (Charlie O'Donnell).
