So Jada Pinkett Smith is joining Gotham, Fox’s new Batman-Minus-Batman TV show. According to the description released by Warner Brothers, she’s playing Fish Mooney, a “sadistic gangster boss and nightclub owner” with “almost extra-sensory abilities to read people like an open book.” Officially, this is a wholly original character. But The Dark Knight Rises’ Miranda Tate was an “original character” too, and we all know that turned out. (Spoiler alert: She was Thanos the whole time.) So is Fish really “original”? Is she a new version of an old character? And either way, what will her role be in Gotham’s grander scheme?...

He’s been busy promoting his new film “The Wolf of Wall Street,” and Leonardo DiCaprio's media duties took him to the set of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” this week.
During his chat with Ellen, the “Titanic” hunk shared a little inside information about his infamous ham scene with Jonah Hill.
“It all resulted in this insane sequence in the end where Jonah decides to stuff ham into his mouth as well and crashes into a plate glass table and we were doing this CPR sequence and you know the big challenge that day we had to do 70 takes because they couldn’t get this ham to stick on my face and they had to put K-y Jelly and there’s literally a guy there behind this giant window with a plastic spoon just flicking ham on my face all day long as I’m doing this insane sequence.

As our pal Quint learned - the hardest way imaginable - the mouth of a Great White shark doesn't exactly make for a nice place to hang out. I don't think anyone will argue against that. But when you are hanging out in a nice place, and you want to crack open a cold one, I can think of no better tool to use to pop that pesky bottle top off your Corona than the sharp teeth of a killer shark.... if only you could find one that would allow you to use its razor rows as a bottle opener.
Enter the folks over at Factory Entertainment, who have just launched their very first officially licensed Jaws collectible; the Jaws bottle opener, of course. Forged out of stainless steel, the world's coolest bottle opener measures 6" long, and this particular version of Bruce promises to only eat your bottle caps - not your friends,...

Every year, we here at Sound On Sight celebrate the month of October with 31 Days of Horror; and every year, I update the list of my favourite horror films ever made. Last year, I released a list that included 150 picks. This year, I’ll be upgrading the list, making minor alterations, changing the rankings, adding new entries, and possibly removing a few titles. I’ve also decided to publish each post backwards this time around for one simple reason: that is, the new additions appear lower on my list, whereas my top 50 haven’t changed much, except for maybe in ranking. Enjoy!
Special Mention:
Un chien andalou
Directed by Luis Buñuel
Written by Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel
France, 1929
The dream – or nightmare – has been a staple of horror cinema for decades. In 1929, Luis Bunuel joined forces with Salvador Dali to create Un chien andalou, an experimental and unforgettable 17-minute surrealist masterpiece.

For those who may be new to my articles or have not read my brief profile, my childhood was spent growing up in the Outback of Australia. Now when it comes to the reputation of our country’s hostile environment, everything you have probably heard is true. The dangers that like to come at you at a moments notice pretty much all can kill you.
We have a majority of the world’s most dangerous animals right here on our doorstep (literally, they will come to your doorstep). In actual fact, out of what is considered the ten most dangerous animals in existence, we currently are home to 4 of them. Australian Box Jellyfish, the Great White Shark, the Eastern Brown Snake and the Saltwater Crocodile.
To research this article I actually went and looked at several comparisons and although they do vary, the general consensus on these four creatures are...

Confirming reports from earlier this week, Rockstar Games has announced that Grand Theft Auto Online (the upcoming multiplayer component of Grand Theft Auto V) will include optional microtransactions that will allow players to use real-world money to purchase in-game cash.
Rockstar Games made the announcement via a post on their website, which reads in part:
“You can either quickly accumulate cash through profitable activities like knocking over armored cars, winning street races, doing stick-ups or a host of other cash-making endeavors – or if you’re the completely instant gratification type, you can choose to buy denominations of GTA$. You will have the option to purchase GTA$ through the in-game Store. The game and its economy have been designed and balanced for the vast majority of players who will not buy extra cash. When Fdr uttered the immortal line: “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself” he clearly had not tangled with a crocodile, stumbled upon a King Cobra, or swam with a Great White shark. Many horror films, if not all of them, take cues from the real world, from science, from nature, from the terror that exists on this planet that Mother Nature has created. What can we conclude? Mother Nature clearly hates the human race. How else can you explain vampire bats and piranhas? The world is full of deadly, horrifying creatures.
Many people are terrified of spiders, others of snakes (Indiana Jones is perhaps the most famous snake hater), and some can’t dip a toe into a pool because of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. There are those that are scared of everything, and lastly, there are the foolish few who say they fear nothing, but...

Did you see Kon-tiki when it was in theaters earlier this year? It is an amazing adventure and the kind of film we avid movie goers haven’t seen in a long time.
Based on the amazing true adventure of Thor Heyderdahl (Pål Sverre Hagen), Kon-tiki is the tale of a Norwegian explorer in 1947 who embarks on the voyage of a lifetime to prove a point. When the scientific community rejects his theory that South Americans were the first to settle in the Polynesian Islands, Heyerdahl resolves to prove its validity—and save his reputation—by embarking on the voyage himself. Recruiting a group of five men who are just bold enough to tackle the seemingly impossible trip, he builds a simple raft to original pre-Columbian specifications and sets off on the epic 101 day-long journey across the treacherous ocean to meet his fate, while the world watches.

The official Batman Arkham Twitter account has said they will be revealing a new Batman villain in two days’ time (on Wednesday August 21st), with most of the evidence suggesting said bad-guy will be assassin number 5.
Numerous titillating image clues (one of which you’ll find below) have been shared through the account, sending hundreds of Batman fans into a speculative frenzy. Instagram has also proved a few extra hints at the characters identity, all of which can be seen here.
Looking closely at the images we can see numerous points of interest that could point us to the right character, such as the incendiary grenades in image five, the jacket in images one and two, and 3, 4, and 6, which appear to be parts of some sort of jetpack and mask.
However, the biggest clues come from the police sheet revealed for the character, as it both shows the criminal is...

Taking the absurd approach to the natural disaster genre, “Sharknado” debuted on the SyFy Network on Thursday evening (July 11).
Based on the premise that a tornado sucks a bunch of sharks out of the ocean and carries them into Southern California, the original movie’s cast members Tara Reid and Ian Ziering led the parade of posts on Twitter following the film’s conclusion.
Reid tweeted, “I actually can't wait for @sharknado it might be even better then snakes on a plane !!! Lol ;) I hope you will have as much fun as I had,” and her costar Ziering added, “#Sharknado Hell hath no fury like a pissed Great White Shark that gets sucked out of the ocean and dropped in #90210.”
Getting a little silly, Bj Novak penned, “I'm afraid that now when we have a real sharknado everyone's going to treat it like a joke,” while Patton Oswalt mused, “Holy sh*t,...

Years ago back when good men and women everywhere rode on horseback…or at the very least, horse and buggy (and eschewed those newfangled horseless carriages), I went to see a reissue of the classic film, ‘Jaws’. I had already seen it back when it was first released, back when it was vital for a cool kid to see the movie that everyone was talking about. On that occasion, I recall that after the movie was over, I felt like my eyes had been permanently glued-open, or at the very least, my eyelids had been sliced off. Hey, that reminds me of the film I’m supposed to be reviewing here, but please bare with me for a moment, okay?

In spite of Aussie director Kimble Rendall switching sharks for spiders in the newly announced 3D horror flick 'The Nest 3D' his supermarket based shark attack movie 'Bait 3D' is still being sequelised. Announced a few months back the second helping of shark-based shennanigans is yet to be determined yet alone score a director or indeed cast but for now we can take a gander at the first piece of teaser art from the project, courtesy of Dread Central. The next installment will revolve around an unexpected tsunami hitting the streets of La bringing a 15-foot Great White Shark along with it. Which sounds annoyingly close to the plot of Anthony C. Ferrante's 'Dark Skies' (title Tbc) with Tara Reid ('American Pie') which sees a flood hit La and subsequent shark attacks occurring all round town. The follow-up will come from Darclight Films, whom have...

Pleasure-seeking is a sport that we all enjoy playing every now and again. Most of us have indulged in an all-day beer bender, seen the sun rise through an intoxicated gaze after the blur of a day spent off the wagon. Others have sky-dived, gone hand-gliding, surfed the crest a 10 foot wave on the Great Barrier Reef. Some have taken a motorcycle across Route 66, fired a gun in a desert wasteland, bored into the dead eyes of a Great White Shark from the confines of a steel cage.
These are the things that stick with us as we age, the moments when we felt truly alive when on the cusp of danger, when we broke the rules and went all out, our bodies caught in the thrill of the moment. But could we live like this 24/7? Could we put our minds and bodies at risk each waking moment of every day,...

It's Monday, which means AMC has released a new "Dispatch from the Set" of "The Walking Dead." This week costume designer Eulyn Womble describes how to make fake pus and chooses her ideal wardrobe for the zombie apocalypse.
Q: Any big wardrobe changes this season? Do our survivors finally get a fresh set of clothes?
A: They never get a fresh set of clothes. [Laughs] It wouldn't be "The Walking Dead" if they looked clean... Maggie is much much tougher this year. She's left the whole farmgirl thing behind. Nothing cute or frilly anymore. Daryl is also changed. This season he has a poncho. It's not quite Clint Eastwood in The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. It's got a little bit more edge than that.
Q: What's the biggest thing you've learned since Season 1 about dressing the cast and the walkers?
A: In Season 1 the walkers had a lot more personality.

A: They never get a fresh set of clothes. [Laughs] It wouldn’t be The Walking Dead if they looked clean… Maggie is much much tougher this year. She’s left the whole farmgirl thing behind. Nothing cute or frilly anymore. Daryl is also changed. This season he has a poncho. It’s not quite Clint Eastwood in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. It’s got a little bit more edge than that.
Q: What’s the biggest thing you’ve learned since Season 1 about dressing the cast and the walkers?...

On the latest episode of "Shark Wranglers" (Sun., 10 p.m. Et on History) the Ocearch crew were tagging a Great White shark on deck when something went wrong.
When they're rolled onto their back sharks enter a state of paralysis known as tonic immobility, but normally recover after about 15 minutes.
However, this shark was not recovering, so crew member Ryan Johnson began the established recovery measures.
"If the shark doesn’t swim," he said, "we can at least lash it to the side of the boat and can swim it manually."
So, after Brett McBride placed a barbless hook in the shark's mouth that's what they did. The crew towed the shark alongside the boat to get water flowing through its gills and wake it up.
Finally, after about an hour-and-a-half, the shark recovered, bringing the crew to tears.
The aquatic dramas continue on "Shark Wranglers," Sundays at 10 p.m.

Need to ask a favor, folks. Here’s the deal: Months ago my wife and I and our friend John, whom you will meet later, decided to utilize our precious vacation time to rent a car and drive from our native Kentucky to Colorado. The goal was just to see what happened along the way. We departed on a Friday night with no reservations and a minimum of must-see destinations (the Badlands were imperative; the rest could be bypassed according to our whims at that time, at that moment).
I had no idea what was in store for me. Waking up in a national park to find an accusatory mountain goat looking in your filthy SUV’s window is one thing. Finding an ancient video store willing to sell hundreds of VHS tapes for $1.99 each is utterly another.
I present to you, dear, dear readers ... The Video Vendor.

Choosing my favourite horror films of all time is like choosing between my children – not that I have children, but if I did, I am sure I would categorize them quite like my DVD collection. As with all lists, this is personal and nobody will agree with every choice – and if you do, that would be incredibly disturbing. Also, it was almost impossible for me to rank them in order, but I tried. I based my list taking into consideration three points:
1- Technical accomplishments / artistry and their influence on the genre.
2- How many times I’ve revisited the films and how easily it makes for a repeated viewings.
3- Its story, atmosphere and how much it affected me when I first watched them.
Finally, there are many great films such as The Witchfinder General, The Wickerman and even Hour Of The Wolf that won’t appear here. I...

In the real world Arkham Asylum would a very, very bad idea. Putting the most diabolical and dangerous of Gotham’s lunatics together in the same building has ‘unwise’ written all over it. Also considering that many of former staff members, including Harley Quinn and Hugo Strange, are now inmates, and the architect went mad and hacked his family to pieces before the project was finished, it would send alarm bells to ring in any government officials head, leading to the building being demolished and the earth on which it stood salted. But thankfully comic books don’t subscribe to real world logic. If it did, we wouldn’t get books like Arkham Asylum: Living Hell.

Point/Counterpoint – More Evil, the Borg or the Aliens?
In our never-ending quest to reduce the absurd, we offer the following Point/Counterpoint discussion: Who is the better evil insidious race, the Borg, or the Aliens?
The Borg—by Eric Schlelein
I vividly remember the first time I saw the episode Q Who, because I vividly remember being startled and unnerved by the cold, unfeeling juggernaut that was the Borg. Here was a Star Trek enemy that had no political discourse, had no social mores. They were only interested in conquering cultures and civilizations by assimilating them. That is: forcibly absorbing all information and technology by scooping the cities off your planet and consuming them.
And in what is arguably the best episode of the entire run of The Next Generation (for sure the best two-parter), Best of Both Worlds amply fulfilled the promise of Q Who by not only...

Beginning in 1975 with Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece, the Jaws series of films is a spectacular example of how a series can go from an absolute classic to a film considered one of the worst of all time.
Part of a new series of retrospective articles looking back at each and every entry in a series of films, we look at Jaws and its three much maligned but somewhat interesting sequels – all of which have gone on to find their own cult fanbase.

London, Sept 25: David Hasselhoff was pictured proposing to his girlfriend Hayley Roberts for the third time this week, but this time he popped the question in the midst of shark-infested waters.
After a spontaneous backstage proposal and another at a romantic sunset failed to do the trick, the 59-year-old actor proposed during a Great White Shark dive during the couple's holiday to South Africa, the Daily Mail reported
The 'Baywatch; star looked slightly absurd in his head-to-toe wetsuit, whereas his girlfriend of seven months was spotted shivering and wrapped in a blanket on the deck.

Talk about your scary Jaws moment. A ten to twelve foot Great White Shark was sighted swimming with surfers at a San Diego Beach just this week. The predators are known for frequenting the area to hunt for seals this time of year, but swimmers were seemingly unaware that such a large animal would be swimming quite so near. Watch the video and tell us what you think. If you were a surfer, would seeing this footage keep you out of the Pacific Ocean? The CBS news reporter posited that the footage would likely discourage quite a few beach goers from entering the water when he reported the strange California news on national TV. Keep reading...

I’ve heard it said many times: “Why can’t Hollywood come up with an original idea?”
In his 2004 article The Art of Adaptation, film pundit Toby Osborne put forward that ‘85 per cent of movies are adaptations’. And of course, for many successful blockbusters there’s a sequel and a video game, then a prequel and then a straight to DVD bargain feature. Before you know it you’re shaking your head through the credits of BloodRayne: The Vampening and wondering just how the hell it came to this.
Adapting a movie from another source is an appealing concept to Hollywood money men for a number of reasons. Paramount though is the prospect of a ready-made audience. Great literature, comic books or video games tend to garner fervent fan bases; die-hard groups of devotees, who have usually been deeply moved by the source material. These are the groups that the...

Oh, Halle Berry. The Oscar-winning actress hasn’t been involved in a commendable project since….well, her win for Monster’s Ball. She has the Wachowski‘s Cloud Atlas coming, but other than that, the horizon isn’t looking good. A sales trailer for her latest feature has arrived and I don’t see it changing anybody’s mind.
From director John Stockwell (Blue Crush, Into the Blue, Turistas), comes the other shark attack film from 2011. I know this is just an early, promo trailer but the drama feels quite forced and I’m not quite sure what the hook is. Some of the shark photography looks decent, but let’s wait for a HD version to confirm. For now, check out the trailer below via Shadow and Act.
Synopsis
A thriller centered on a diving instructor who returns to deep waters after a near-fatal encounter with a Great White shark.

The first signs of mutiny aboard the U.S.S. American Idol surfaced during Wednesday night’s Top 8 performance telecast, and not a moment too soon. As the Season 10 contestants tackled “Songs from the Movies,” James Durbin and Casey Abrams stood up and said “no” to Interscope chairman Jimmy Iovine and his wacky cartoon sidekick, choosing instead to forge their own imperfect paths in the competition. Whether or not their singular visions were successful, or whether they’ll lead to quick exits or carry them all the way to the Nokia at the end of May, is almost irrelevant at this point.
