While television had been a part of each past IndieWire Honors celebration, the medium took center stage on the evening of Thursday, June 6, with an event that celebrated the creators and stars of such well-regarded shows as “Abbott Elementary,” “Expats,” “Fellow Travelers,” “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” and “True Detective: Night Country.”
Even before the awards ceremony began, as talent started filing into the Citizen News venue in the heart of Hollywood, it was a marvel to see “Palm Royale” star and Vanguard Award recipient Carol Burnett hold court as fellow honorees like “Under the Bridge” producer/star Riley Keough, recipient of the Maverick Award, and “Abbott Elementary” creator/star Quinta Brunson, recipient of the Visionary Award (and whom Burnett presented an Emmy to in January), came to greet the comedy legend.

On June 6, the 2024 IndieWire Honors ceremony celebrated 13 creators and stars responsible for some of the most stellar work of the TV season. Curated and selected by IndieWire’s editorial team, the event was a new edition of previous IndieWire Honors ceremonies, this time focused entirely on television. We showcased their work with new interviews leading up to the Los Angeles celebration.
“Is your desk very messy or is it very clean?”
This was the question host Alex Edelman asked renaissance man, actor, filmmaker, and documentarian Fisher Stevens before welcoming him to the stage to accept the Magnify Award at the 2024 IndieWire Honors. It’s a fair ask, as Stevens remains one of the busiest men in Hollywood and abroad. He’s a jack-of-all-trades, starring in films from Wes Anderson, as well as being a part of the hit series “Succession,” producing movies like “Swimfan” and “Uptown Girls,” and taking on...

Dakota Fanning went viral in April for revealing that not only did Tom Cruise gift her a cell phone when she celebrated her 11th birthday on the set of their 2005 movie “War of the Worlds” but that he’s also proceeded to send her a birthday gift every year since. That’s nearly two decades worth of birthday presents, all of which have apparently been shoes. Fanning revealed the specifics of Cruise’s gifting habits during a new interview on Kelly Clarkson’s daytime talk show (via Entertainment Weekly).
“I turned 11 on ‘War of the Worlds,’ when we worked together and he gave me my first cell phone for that birthday,” Fanning said. “It was a Motorola Razr…I didn’t have anyone to call, but I wanted a Razr so bad. I must have been talking about it a lot because that’s what he got me. It’s such a great memory.

Hannah Dakota Fanning, born February 23, 1994, is a well-known American actress. She is 5 feet 4 inches (162.6 cm) tall, the average height for an American woman, and wears a size 7 (US) shoe.
In other systems, her shoe size would be approximately 37 in European sizing, 5 in the UK, and 23.5 in the Japanese.
“I’m a shorter person, so I’ll see something and think, ‘That looks amazing!’ But that person is 6ft 1in. It’s going to look different on my 5ft 5in frame,” she told The Guardian about her average height in 2016.

It’s a lean month for new original content on HBO/Max. November will see the return of two scripted series in Julia and Rap Sh!t, both of which are debuting their respective second seasons, but this month’s fresh highlight is likely to be Bookie, a new comedy series from the partnership of The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, and Nick Bakay. The show tracks an LA bookie called Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco), whose business is in peril as California movies to legalize sports gambling.
Elsewhere in November, there quite a few interesting documentaries to keep an eye on, and two that jump out as “must watch”. The first is Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, which chronicles the aging comedian’s life and career. The second is the previously-released Little Richard: I Am Everything, which tries to peel back the whitewashed canon of Richard Penniman in a true...

Let’s be honest, it’s a weird time out there in the world of streaming movies. As the major streamers continue to mess around with their apps and libraries, adding ad-tiers or changing their names to nonsense words that have nothing to do with the brand, they’re also charging more for less. As Netflix, Max, and Amazon Prime decrease in value, free streaming services become a better deal.
But just because you’re not shelling out any cash doesn’t mean that you want a terrible experience. If you know where to look, you can find hundreds of movies available online, completely for free. And no, I’m not referring to those sketchy sites you used to visit in college. I’m talking about services that let you watch full-length movies completely for free. Sure, you’ll need to watch a few ads to get the movies, but...

More than a decade after Brittany Murphy died, director Cynthia Hill wants to give the actor a chance to “be something other than her death.”
“We’re doing a lot of looking back to reevaluate missteps and to be able to talk about people like Britney Spears and Brittany Murphy, who have been victimized by Hollywood, by the gossip industry,” Hill tells Variety. “Having to look back at what our role is in all of that [is] giving these women an opportunity to reclaim their voices.”
Working with Blumhouse Television and Pyramid Productions, Hill spent the last year creating a two-part docuseries about the circumstances that led to Murphy’s death on Dec. 20, 2009, at age 32. “What Happened, Brittany Murphy?” bows Oct. 14 on HBO Max.

Dakota Fanning is paying tribute to her former co-star, the late Brittany Murphy. As fans might recall, the stars worked together on the beloved 2003 movie, Uptown Girls, in which Murphy's character became the nanny to Fanning's character. Six years after the film's release, in Dec. 2009, Murphy passed away at the age of 32. On Wednesday night, Fanning appeared on Watch What Happens Live and was asked to share the advice she had received from Murphy while working on the film together. "Oh man, she just taught me to always have fun," Fanning, 26, told host Andy Cohen. "She was such a ray of light and had such a playful spirit. So I think just...she made every day...

A dazzling and frank dance musical, Boaz Yakin’s Aviva is an ambitious picture free from the restraints of traditional narrative–an ode to young urban living as young lovers Eden and Aviva settle down and settle into familiar gender roles. The question of gender roles is a loaded one, in fact. We’re told that Eden (played by Tyler Phillips as a man and Bobbi Jene Smith as a female) was intended to be a woman, played by a man, in a role written by a man. Eden’s lover, the luminous Aviva, is portrayed in female form by Zina Zinchenko and sometimes in the male form by Or Schraiber. The rules of the game–the movie within the movie–are explained as each character is introduced to us posing nude, in either a domestic or professional space, by the film’s female narrator. Confused yet? Aviva is as confounding as it is explicit,...

"Only in the wilderness is man made pure again." Momentum has released a trailer for a dark thriller film titled Boarding School, the latest from filmmaker Boaz Yakin. The synopsis for this seems similar to The Miseducation of Cameron Post, but the actual film seems to border on being more horror or psychological thriller than a drama. Luke Prael stars as Jacob, a 12-year-old boy who, after being caught wearing women's dresses by his father, is sent away to a private boarding school for teenage misfits. Once there, he discovers the headmaster is much more dangerous than helpful in any way. The cast includes Will Patton, Samantha Mathis, Robert John Burke, Tammy Blanchard, Lucy Walters, Sterling Jerins, and Nadia Alexander. This gets super creepy by the end. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Boaz Yakin's Boarding School, direct from YouTube: When troubled 12-year-old Jacob Felsen is sent away to boarding school,...

Sara Howard lives in the dark world of the seedier side of New York City in the late 19th century. Actress Dakota Fanning plays Sara on the TNT anthology thriller “The Alienist” and was excited to halt her film career for a short while to take on the role. In our recent interview (watch above), she reveals, “I was thrilled at the opportunity to show such a pioneer, ground-breaking character for 1896. We didn’t get to see women in those positions very often, so I loved that aspect of the story. I tend to be drawn to darker subject matter in general.”

Crazy to think that Brittany Murphy's gone at all, let alone that it's been six years since she tragically passed away when she was only 32. We've been thinking about her a lot this year, what with Clueless having marked its 20th anniversary and it being one of the greatest movies ever and all. And we realized that, while there's no shame in Tai being the crowning jewel of her career, Murphy was someone to watch all the time, whether she was keeping a secret in Don't Say a Word, making us cry in Girl, Interrupted, annoying us in Eight Mile or just being adorable again in Uptown Girls. Today would have been her 38th birthday and, while this could easily be an all-Clueless list, here's a look...
