The producers and key creatives behind the Live Aid musical Just for One Day, which officially opened Tuesday night at the Old Vic, have banded together to ensure that 10 percent of every ticket sold goes to the Band Aid Charitable Trust established by Bob Geldof and others to help relieve the hunger and poverty in Ethiopia.
The trust also can expect more funds pouring into its coffers if and when the show transfers from the Old Vic into the West End — and possibly to Broadway, where its capitalization will be many times more than the approximately £6 million ($7.6 million) it cost to develop and stage in London.

For 15 minutes or so, Bob Marley: One Love promises to be an antidote to the usual cookie-cutter music biopic, the kind skewered by the 2007 spoof Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Riffing back then on 2005’s Walk the Line, which starred Joaquin Phoenix as troubled country star Johnny Cash, Jake Kasdan’s film took aim at the whole jukebox-movie industry, featuring a solemn lead character who “has to think about his entire life before he goes on stage.”
Spoiler alert: this kind of thing also happens in One Love. But Reinaldo Marcus Green’s film promises so much more, things like real-world politics, emotional complexity, and serious danger. In other words, an alternative to the usual narrative of the greenhorn who dreams big, lives that dream, and then gets sucker-punched by The Man. Gradually, though, the realization dawns that we’re being sold a pup. As Led Zeppelin might say,...

Rocker and activist Bob Geldof made an appearance at this week’s EnergaCamerimage cinematography film festival, where he reflected on his career and revealed that an Imax film about Live Aid, the 1985 benefit concert that he organized, may be on the way to theaters.
He also didn’t mince words when he talked about his dislike for 1982 musical film Pink Floyd-The Wall, a screening of which he helped to introduce at Camerimage in Torún, Poland, with his friend, cinematographer and Lifetime Achievement Award honoree Peter Biziou. “I don’t like the film. I think I’m really bad. I’m not an actor, and I think it’s like an extended video,” he freely admitted of the Alan Parker film in which he starred. “I don’t think it’s a film, and I think that’s the nature of the exercise. It’s an album by Pink Floyd. I don’t like the record.

Classic rocker Bob Geldof is the latest high-profile name to pass through what is turning out to be a bustling and A-list edition of Poland’s EnergaCamerimage Film Festival, where he is presenting a screening of his 1982 feature Pink Floyd – The Wall.
Geldof plays the lead in the music drama, and he’s set to introduce the pic here at Camerimage with the film’s DoP Peter Biziou, who is the recipient of the festival’s lifetime achievement award.
When quizzed by journalists during a press Q&a whether he looked back on the feature, directed by Alan Parker, as a defining moment of his artistic career, Geldof’s response was definitive: “No, I don’t like the film. I think I’m really bad.”
“I’ve seen the movie twice, and I was embarrassed,” Geldof continued, adding that he could only finish working on the film because Biziou made it “very easy.

The landmark 1985 charity concert, Live Aid, has been turned into a stage musical. Titled Just for One Day, the show will feature songs by Queen, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, and more, and is set to premiere next year at the Old Vic in London.
In a new interview, the original Live Aid’s organizer, Bob Geldof, explained that the show is “based on actual testimony from the day,” and will give a stage to “real people telling their story.” To that end, it won’t be your run-of-the-mill jukebox romp, but rather, a fresh narrative meant to inspire a new generation of rock music lovers.
Among the other artists whose songs are included are: David Bowie, The Who, U2, The Police, The Pretenders, The Cars, Status Quo, Paul Weller, Sade, The Boomtown Rats, Bryan Adams, Diana Ross, and Ultravox.
“This isn’t a tribute thing,” Geldof told the BBC.

Sir Bob Geldof is returning to his best-known project to develop a stage musical based on his 1985 Live Aid concert.
Featuring some of the era’s biggest names in music — ranging from Mick Jagger to David Bowie to to Tina Turner to Bob Dylan to still-legendary performance by Freddie Mercury and Queen — Live Aid raised millions of dollars to fight famine in Africa.
Now, Deadline is reporting that Geldof has teamed with Luke Sheppard (“& Juliet”) for “Just For One Day”, a new musical based on that iconic concert, set to premiere at London’s Old Vic Theatre in early 2024.

Freddie Mercury established himself as a legendary frontman for Queen thanks to his booming vocals and stellar showmanship. He was tremendously talented and entertained audiences like many other music stars couldn’t. In rock history, several of Freddie Mercury’s best moments became enshrined, and Queen guitarist Brian May said one iconic moment was utterly spontaneous.

In the late 1980s, a group of grumpy music journalism vets and fresh-faced 20-somethings came together for a radical media experiment: the launch of a cable news division programmed for, and largely run by American youth. On May 9, 2023 — 36 years after its inception — Paramount announced that the fruits of their labor, MTV News, had been shuttered for good.
The Hollywood Reporter reached out to many of MTV News’ star reporters — Kurt Loder, Tabitha Soren, John Norris, Alison Stewart, Chris Connelly, SuChin Pak and Gideon Yago — and visionary executives Doug Herzog and Ocean MacAdams to reminisce about the glory days of the outfit, where one day you might be hanging backstage with Prince in Paris, the next chasing a pre-White House Bill Clinton through the snowy streets of New Hampshire.
For each of them, it was a bittersweet journey they were more than happy to take.

Led Zeppelin was one of the biggest rock bands of the 1970s. The British group topped the charts with their psychedelic sound and performed at sold-out concerts around the world. However, like all great bands, they eventually called it quits.

Led Zeppelin quickly gained a following when they formed. Singer Robert Plant realized the band might really mean something to their fans when they played to an enthusiastic crowd before their first album dropped. Bassist and multi-instrumentalist John Paul Jones was essential to Led Zeppelin’s sound but maybe not essential enough in the eyes of his bandmates. When Plant and Jimmy Page reunited for 1994’s No Quarter without inviting Jones, it was the ultimate slap in the face.

Led Zeppelin became the biggest band on earth not long after forming, partly because American audiences immediately embraced them. But worldwide success came to a sudden end with John Bonham’s tragic death in 1980.
Rumors and hopes of a reunion never really came to fruition.

Following the big fallout between director Bryan Singer and Fox, the studio has officially replaced Singer as the director of Bohemian Rhapsody. Singer was fired from the production earlier this week and now director Dexter Fletcher will finish the film.
Fletcher is an interesting choice. He directed the wonderful film Eddie The Eagle and has also acted in a couple Matthew Vaughn films such as Kick-Ass and Stardust. Fletcher was also one of the original directors in the running to helm the Freddie Mercury biopic before Singer was involved. Maybe they should have gone with him in the first place. Deadline goes on to explain:
The studio began canvassing for replacement directors even before Singer went Awol after Thanksgiving, sources said. Fox denies this, and the studio denies that anyone but Fletcher was offered the job once Singer was sacked. My sources said that the film didn’t appeal to everyone.

There have been some issues with director Bryan Singer during the production of the Queen Biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. Due to these issues, three days ago production was halted on the production due to the “unexpected unavailability” of Singer. Now today, Variety reports that the director has been fired.
There are no details were given by the studio as to what is going on, but a source said the decision came following clashes between Singer and star Rami Malek, who plays Freddie Mercury. I can't help but think that there's more too it than that because there always is. Also, do directors really get fired by the studio because they don't get along with their actors? I'm sure more information on all this will be revealed over time.
Production for the film has obviously been shut down and will eventually commence once a new director has been hired to take Singer's place.

This could be why I don’t give to charities, and why I won’t start. Not all of them might have turned out this bad but a good deal of them seem to ask for money for causes that never see the full benefit of such funds. There are always reasons of course, excuses given and a mention of expenses that must be paid, but the point is that raising money for charities doesn’t always go as it should, and too often, even if it isn’t very often, it’s because the charities end up being scams. Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What’s the best modern show set in the ’80s? (To qualify, the show must have aired sometime 2000-present.)
Alan Sepinwall (@sepinwall), Uproxx
Recency bias would suggest “Halt and Catch Fire,” even though its strongest season, this last one, took place in the 1990s, or “Stranger Things,” which is an extremely fun show but not an all-timer. That leaves two clear-cut favorites: “Freaks and Geeks,” Paul Feig and Judd Apatow’s ode to high school outcasts; and FX’s Cold War spy thriller “The Americans.” The former is one of the great one-season wonders, one of the best shows ever made about teenagers, and — between Feig,...

Thanks to director Bryan Singer, we've got a new photo of Rami Malek completely rocking out as Freddie Mercury in the upcoming biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. The director said that he couldn't help himself from posting the photo. It's certainly filled with a lot of energy!
The film "chronicles Queen from 1970, when Mercury teamed with Brian May and Roger Taylor, until the band’s performance at Live Aid in 1985, six years before the singer died of complications from AIDS. Malek channels Mercury’s look from that global-concert event."
Singer has said that this won't be a traditional biopic, as it's a story that will honor the music. Malek looks like he's the perfect actor to take on this role and I'm excited to see his performance. You can listen to Malek singing in a video from the set that was previously posted here.

Prior to his involvement in USA’s excellent Mr. Robot series (our review), Rami Malek was often restricted to tertiary roles. From Night at the Museum to The Pacific to Short Term 12, the 36-year-old has no shortage of credits for supporting characters, and even played a small, yet fairly crucial role in Supermassive’s video game sleeper hit, Until Dawn.
That all changes with the release of Bohemian Rhapsody, though, which is poised to place Rami Malek front and center as the great Freddie Mercury. And though a handful of film fans expressed some concern about his casting, those fears were quickly silenced following the unveiling of the actor as Queen’s former frontman.

We’ll be the first to admit that we weren’t sure what to make of the casting of Mr. Robot star Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in the upcoming biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. But after seeing the actor in action thanks to a recent set video (seen above), we can safely say that 20th Century Fox picked the right man for the job.
While we don’t know too much about the film just yet, it will reportedly spotlight “a 15-year period, starting in 1970 when Mercury met his bandmates, up through their legendary Live Aid performance in 1985.” Now, with production well underway, the rest of the cast is starting to assemble and today, Deadline brings word that two more key roles have been filled.

Under pressure? If Rami Malek (Mr. Robot) is feeling the weight of portraying Freddie Mercury, one of the greatest singer-songwriters to ever walk the face of the planet, then it doesn’t show.
One week on from that stunning reveal of Malek in costume as Queen’s lead singer, and we now have some behind-the-scenes footage from Bohemian Rhapsody that shows the 36-year-old recreate Mercury’s memorable performance at Live Aid. Sporting that signature white vest and blue jeans ensemble, the attention to detail here is uncanny. Freddie Mercury was always known and loved for his flamboyant stage persona, and that’s something Rami Malek recreates almost perfectly up above, jogging onto the faux stage and gesturing to the crowd, before sitting next to the grand piano.

Dr. Brian May has always lived at the intersection of art and science—and it’s been quite fruitful for the astrophysicist rock star. As a teenager growing up in the early ’60s, his youthful curiosity led him to construct a guitar with the help of his father. It was that very instrument, the famous “Red Special,” that served him almost exclusively as he conquered the world in Queen. Now he’s using technology to bring memories of his remarkable musical journey to life.

A fan-shot video popped up online showing Mr. Robot actor Rami Malek rocking out while shooting scenes for the new biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. In the video, you can see Malek recreating Queen's legendary Live Aid performance while portraying the late singer Freddie Mercury. We got our first look at the actor in the role last week.
In the video, Malek takes the stage just like Wembley Stadium in 1985. Malek shows some very Freddie Mercury-esque dance moves before taking a seat at the piano.
Malek announced the role last November. Several actors and directors came and left the biopic over the last few years. At one point Sacha Baron Cohen was cast as Mercury but dropped out over disagreements on how the film would cover the more obscene details of the Queen singer's life. New life was breathed into the project when actor Ben Winshaw and director Dexter Fletcher came on board,...

Rami Malek is rock icon Freddie Mercury in this first look photo from the upcoming Twentieth Century Fox/New Regency film Bohemian Rhapsody.
Tuesday, September 5, which would have been the singer’s 71st birthday. He died at the age of 45 in November 1991.
The Bryan Singer-helmed film chronicles Queen from 1970, when Mercury teamed with Brian May and Roger Taylor, until the band’s performance at Live Aid in 1985, six years before the singer died of complications from AIDS.
Their 1975 single, “Bohemian Rhapsody“, was number 1 for nine weeks (and a further five weeks in 1991) and is the third biggest selling single of all time in the UK. The band’s 1981 Greatest Hits album is the biggest selling album in UK history with 6.0 million copies sold by 2014. Thanks to EW, we have our first official look at Rami Malek (Mr. Robot) as rock star Freddy Mercury in the upcoming biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. This is such a different role for Malek! It's very different from anything we've seen him in before and as you can see, he completely transformed himself to play Mercury! When he was first cast in the role I wasn't sure how it would work, it was hard to imagine Malek in the role. But, now that I'm seeing him as Mercury... I can see that it works!
When talking about his transformation into Freddy Mercury, Malek said:
“When you’re able to open your eyes and see a different person staring back at you in the mirror, it’s a very affirming moment.”

But after seeing the actor in the photo above, which comes to us courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, we can at least say that he definitely looks the part and seems to have truly disappeared into the role.
Currently in production, with original Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor on board as music producers, the film is based on a script from Theory of Everything writer Anthony McCarten and has Bryan Singer behind the camera. The long-in-the-works Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” is finally in production after years of development, and “Mr. Robot” Emmy winner Rami Malek is the man at the center. The actor is bringing the Queen frontman to the big screen in the film directed by Bryan Singer. Sasha Baron Cohen was previously attached to star in the movie.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” follows Queen from their creation in 1970, when Mercury teamed with Brian May and Roger Taylor, to the band’s iconic 1985 performance at Live Aid. Mercury’s battle with AIDS won’t be a plot point in the movie.

15 years ago today, Elle Woods taught us to bend and snap. Legally Blonde hit theaters on July 13, 2001, giving Reese Witherspoon her breakout role and giving us a movie that put a pink-loving sorority girl in the place where she’s the outcast: law school. Until she proves all her doubters wrong, that is, in the midst of a murder trial, no less. The comedy’s success led to a 2003 sequel and a stage musical that premiered on Broadway in 2007. Other notable July 13 happenings in pop culture history: • 1923: The Hollywood sign, which then read “Hollywoodland,” was officially dedicated. • 1939: Frank Sinatra made his recording debut in a New York studio, singing “From The Bottom Of My Heart” and “Melancholy Mood” with the Harry James Band. • 1964: The Supremes recorded “Come See About Me” in “Hitsville U.S.A.,” Motown’s first headquarters. • 1984: The Muppets Take Manhattan and The Last Starfighter opened in theaters.

She also performed the songs accompanying the opening and end credits, two synth-heavy guitar ballads that were emblematic of their decade. On the movie’s opening weekend, Ronald Reagan was president, Queen was raising money to fight famine at the Live Aid concert, and Coca Cola was trying to backpedal away from New Coke as fast as possible. In other words, "Beyond Thunderdome" was a creature of the eighties, which makes it all the more impressive that "Mad Max: Fury Road" managed to bring the franchise back to life this year without looking dated. Sublimating the "Mad Max" series for a modern audience was no easy feat. But Miller kept alive the freakish, carnivalesque qualities of the original while...
