Daniel Bryan announced his retirement from professional wrestling this week, ending one of the most unique and unexpected careers ever.
Bryan’s rise from the independents to the main event of Wrestlemania XXX is so unlikely, Hollywood writers probably couldn’t script it. Bryan made it in the big time because he was one of the most gifted technical wrestlers of the past 15 years. However, a lot of what brought Bryan to the top and beyond was due to circumstances that were completely beyond his control. One reverse decision at any of these points, and Bryan could have had a different career entirely.
Did you know that Bryan may have ended up in WCW in 2000, or in a tag team with Brian Kendrick on Raw in 2009? Did you know that Bryan’s Money in the Bank win and subsequent World Title cash-in weren’t decided until the day of the show?...

The Attitude Era was home to some of the most beloved tag teams in the history of the WWE. Those golden years saw illustrious pairings such as Edge & Christian and The Hardy Boyz rise through the ranks, winning multiple championships and putting on countless entertaining matches. Mega-teams of already-established main event stars captured the fans’ imaginations too, alliances including The Brothers of Destruction and The Rock & Sock Connection.
Even more comical teams such as the Headbangers or the Right To Censor heel stable hold a place in the hearts of Attitude Era fans, more for their status as relics of a treasured era than any great success in the ring. The enduring appeal of such figures was evident during the Dudley Boyz’ recent shock return to Raw, a comeback which drew a raucous live reaction and social media response.
But not every Attitude Era team is as easy to recall.

With the biggest spectacle of the summer right around the corner, what better time to look at the stats behind the WWE’s SummerSlam PPV? More specifically, it’s time to take a look at who’s collected the most wins since the annual event began all the way back in 1988.
In terms of wins, anything goes for this list. Be it in singles or tag team competition, pinfalls, submissions, DQs, countouts and any recognised way of winning the particular matches that have taken place all count towards the ever-important figures here.
What aren’t taken into consideration are the matches that took place on the PPV pre-show or on the likes of Sunday Night Heat – these stats are based purely on the main SummerSlam cards that we’ve had for the 14 years.
And yes, it’s worth noting that this particular piece has been penned before this year’s SummerSlam show,...

Raw is currently three hours long, and it feels like 12. That’s the ‘A’ show. SmackDown is basically nothing but warmed-over rehashes of bad Raw matches and detailed recaps of the actual Raw. That’s the ‘B’ show. So where does that leave WWE’s lowest dregs, the dreaded ‘C’ shows?
Honestly, better than you might think.
Superstars and Main Event are often home to overlooked minor classics, likely because no one from WWE management is overbooking them with distraction roll-ups or count-outs. Many of them even have clean finishes, which are about as common on Raw as a run-in by a unicorn.
They’re unimportant enough to slip through the cracks without getting obnoxious WWE storyline clichés all over them, and that makes them precious anomalies. They’re showcase matches where overlooked talent can give it their all without Michael Cole yammering about hashtags and whatever John Cena’s doing,...

If you’re a member of the anti-John Cena crowd, then the 2014 edition of SummerSlam was probably the greatest night of your life. In the brutal main event of the show, Brock Lesnar tore John Cena down like he was a rookie hometown jobber on an old episode of Sunday Night Heat. It was a vicious assault which featured sixteen german suplexes and a definitive pinfall win that echoed off of Brock’s defeat of the Undertaker at WrestleMania, and it made Lesnar the most credible man to hold the title in years.
Brock brings a certain aura to the title that hasn’t existed with it for years; he works limited dates, and comes off as a special attraction. It’s similar to some of the runs that Hogan and Sammartino had, where they weren’t seen as often as the champion is today and created...

Not as much lately, but for years, WWE would go through announcers like a hot knife through butter. With how much they value a “TV look,” they’ve tried out a lot of announcers that, for whatever reason, didn’t work out in the long term. A number of low-level announcers came and went, lasting anywhere from a few weeks to several months. One example I didn’t include in this list, since he made it on to a pay-per-view event (SummerSlam ’93), was prolific infomercial host Joe Fowler. Maybe it was longer, but it felt like he was gone within weeks, back to selling me wonderful doodads I can’t get in stores.
They also experimented with a number of existing wrestlers and managers as color commentators, interviewers, hosts of the “Event Center” segments, and so on. Just think of some of the higher profile experiments over the...

A lot of successful WWE performers can trace their lineage through Paul Heyman’s Extreme Championship Wrestling. Rob Van Dam became WWE Champion (and Ecw Champion) in 2006. Tazz parlayed his wrestling character into a successful announcing career starting in 2002. The homicidal, genocidal, maniac that was Sabu played an important role in the re-launch of the Ecw brand beginning with 2006′s One Night Stand PPV (facing Rey Mysterio for his World Championship). To varying degrees, the Ecw experience helped shape the careers of many former WWE World Champions such as Chris Jericho, Chris Benoit, Mick Foley, Eddie Guerrero and Steve Austin.
However, there’s the other group. Those are the many Ecw performers whose experience in the WWE was far less thrilling. While these wrestlers have mostly been relegated more to footnotes of WWE history we’ll take a moment to recall their time as superstars in the world’s biggest pro-wrestling company.

Nelson Frazier Jr, also known as Viscera and King Mabel in many of his WWE incarnations, has passed away after suffering a heart attack in his hometown of Memphis, Tennesse.
He had just celebrated his 43rd birthday this past Friday on Valentine’s day.
Wrestling agent Eric Simms first broke this news on his Facebook page…
Others then followed suit and paid their condolences.

The Voice Of The Voiceless, The Second City Saint, The Best In The World or simply just Phil Brooks. Whatever name you know him by, you also know him as Cm Punk, one of the most outspoken, opinionated people in the history of professional wrestling (sorry Vince, I meant sports entertainment). Never afraid to speak his mind, Punk has made a career out of creating emotions in his audience, his colleagues and even his belligerent boss.

There was no time like it. Being an 11 and 12 year old kid and watching the WWF (which it was at the time) was a thrill unlike any other. The Monday Night Wars was a time in wrestling that will never be duplicated. I honestly couldn’t wait until Monday nights so I could watch Raw with my brothers. It was, sincerely, a feeling I don’t think I’ll ever be able to replace. I could barely wait to watch Sunday Night Heat, which is basically what Main Event is these days.
My parents weren’t too thrilled at times, specifically when I’d run around the house screaming the two words that Dx had for us, I didn’t really know what it meant. I distinctly remember the monthly occurrence of begging my parents to order the pay per view for that month. They were rarely receptive, but when...

The entertainment world is mourning the loss of Captain Lou Albano, one of the most charismatic people ever to step into a wrestling ring. Albano became a household name during the rise of the WWF in the early 1980s, as his professional relationship with Cyndi Lauper put him on television outside of wrestling events. But he not only brought wrestling to the people, but he also brought people to wrestling. Case in point: The WWF (now WWE) used to have a pretty regular working relationship with MTV. The network hosted a number of original shows (including "WWE Tough Enough" and "Sunday Night Heat"), and back in the original Wrestlemania era, MTV actually aired live wrestling events, both of which involved Albano and Lauper.
The first event, "The Brawl to End It All," aired in 1984 and featured a Women's Championship match between Wendi Richter and the Fabulous Moolah. The show was...

Professional-wrestling fans the world over are mourning the passing of Captain Lou Albano. Though he was beloved among wrestling fans as an in-ring entertainer in various roles as a wrestler, manager and announcer, his main claim to crossover fame was as an ambassador who bridged the worlds of music and wrestling — a relationship that helped Vince McMahon's World Wrestling Federation (now Entertainment) to become a dominant national force in the 1980s and solidified Albano's place on the pop-culture map.
Not surprisingly, a lot of Albano's work in the music world saw a crossover with MTV. The network has always had a friendly relationship with professional wrestling, airing various pieces of WWE programming over the past few decades (including...
