English actor Thomas William Hiddleston — aka Tom Hiddleston — made his TV debut in the 2001 British TV film ‘The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby.’ And although we didn’t get to see his character — Lord — a lot, the appearance opened several doors for Hiddleston. The same year, he was featured in another TV film, “Conspiracy.” However, his fame seems to have come following his role as the Marvel Cinematic Universe character Loki — the God of Mischief.
Sadly, last year, Hiddleston hinted that his tenure as Loki was concluded, and someone else would replace him. In an interview with Variety, he said, “I’m a temporary torchbearer. I’ve always thought that. It’s a great role. It’s an archetype, the trickster god, the agent of chaos. I’m just here interpreting that for the time being. Loki has been here for centuries and will be here for centuries more,...

Two years after its premature pandemic closure, Martin McDonagh’s play “Hangmen” has slipped the proverbial noose and returned to Broadway in a plot twist you might think McDonagh wrote himself. The unexpected resurrection of this dark comedy about the cessation of the death penalty in England in 1965 stars a slightly different cast than it did back in March 2020: David Threlfall has stepped into the shoes of the hangman played by Mark Addy, while Alfie Allen takes over the menacing character Mooney that Dan Stevens once embodied.
These two characters come to loggerheads when they meet in the bar that Threlfall’s Harry runs in his early retirement, while a subsequent kidnapping plot propels both characters to make fateful decisions. Matthew Dunster directs the thriller, which also features original Broadway cast members Tracie Bennett, Gaby French, and many others. “Hangmen” opened at the Golden Theatre on April 21.

Martin McDonagh is one of the most celebrated writers working today, having created an impressive body of work across film and theater. He won an Oscar for the short film “Six Shooter” and his feature “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” was nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. That movie managed to win both of those categories at the BAFTAs. McDonagh has also carved out a noteworthy career as a playwright, but snagging a Tony Award has proved elusive. That could all change this year with the spring debut of his new play “Hangmen.”
If you follow theater at all, you may be surprised that McDonagh has never won the Tony for Best Play. It’s certainly not for lack of trying. Six of his plays have debuted on Broadway, with four of them nominated for that top award: “The Beauty Queen of Leenane,” “The Lonesome West,” “The Pillowman,...

Hangmen, Martin McDonagh’s Olivier Award-winning comedy that became (seemingly) an early casualty of Broadway’s 2020 Covid shutdown, has gotten a reprieve: The play will begin previews at Broadway’s Golden Theatre on Friday, April 8, with an opening night set for Thursday, April 21.
Co-starring in the limited 10-week engagement will be Alfie Allen, best known to American audiences for his indelible Game of Thrones portrayal of Theon “Reek” Greyjoy, and David Threlfall, returning to Broadway for the first time in 25 years.
The Royal Court Theatre/Atlantic Theater Company production of Hangmen will be directed by Matthew Dunster, who directed the pre-shutdown Broadway staging that co-starred Downton Abbey‘s Dan Stevens and Game of Thrones‘ Mark Addy as Harry (now to be played by Threlfall).
Prior to the shutdown, Hangmen began previews at the Golden on February 28, 2020, and was scheduled...

Liz McCann, a groundbreaking Broadway producer who, as one of the first and most successful women to achieve a prominent leadership role in the theater industry – a term she hated, preferring “theater community” — died Thursday of cancer at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. She was 90.
Her death was announced by her longtime associate and friend Kristen Luciani.
Elizabeth Ireland McCann — known throughout the Broadway community simply as Liz — started her career in theater as a production assistant and manager with Proscenium Productions at the Cherry Lane Theatre in the 1950s. In 1955, the company would be the first Off Broadway theater to win a Special Tony Award for its seminal productions of The Way of the World and Thieves’ Carnival.
Following a series of short-term theater jobs, McCann, who had acted in plays during her student years at Manhattanville College, completed a law degree at Fordham University. She later earned a...

Half a decade has passed since Lin-Manuel Miranda finished his Broadway run as the star of “Hamilton,” but the adulation for his work just keeps coming. The Tony-winning smash, which Miranda also wrote, experienced a surge in popularity after a filmed version featuring the entire original cast premiered on Disney+ last July. Miranda and six of his castmates have been recognized for their acting, which makes most of them part of an exclusive group of performers who have earned Tony and Emmy bids for the same role.
Just as they did at the 2016 Tonys, leading men Miranda and Leslie Odom Jr. face each other directly in this year’s Best Movie/Limited Actor Emmy race. Nominated for their supporting turns are Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Jonathan Groff, Anthony Ramos, and Phillipa Soo. Ramos is the only one to have not originally competed at the Tonys, as that slot was instead filled by Christopher Jackson.

“Belgravia” is a lavish historical drama set in the early days of Queen Victoria‘s reign that tells the story of an upwardly mobile family striving to find their place among the aristocracy. This six-part limited series on Epix is based on the novel of the same name by Oscar winner Julian Fellowes, who is fresh from the success of the “Downton Abbey” film. The TV edition of that drama set against the backdrop of the English aristocracy was an Emmys favorite, picking up 15 awards over the years.
“Belgravia” could do equally well with TV academy voters who may be eager to embrace escapist fare like this in these trying times. With its lavish attention to detail, “Belgravia” is sure to contend in a slew of below-the-line races. The video above captures the craftsmanship of BAFTA-winning costume designer James Keast (“The Long Firm”) and BAFTA nominated hair and makeup designer...

For a limited time, the service is offering FilmStruck members a $24.99 annual subscription to Fandor (a 57% discount from the regular $59.99 annual plan).
More info is at this link. It’s not clear how Fandor is verifying whether someone is an existing FilmStruck customer, and it seems like a general promo open to all new Fandor subscribers.
“We have asked for verification, but we will ultimately need to believe in the goodwill of subscribers to redeem based on the honor system,” Fandor chief marketing officer John Zamoiski said.

A True Original: Alberto Cavalcanti is showing from September 9 – October 12, 2018 in the United States.Champagne CharlieIf Dickensian fiction story of Nicholas Nickleby were to be filmed today, he’d be a young man incessantly searching Craigslist and wondering what college education is really good for. At least that’s the impression one gets watching Alberto Cavalcanti’s lively adaptation, The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby (1947), which perfectly captures the angst of urban youth fitted with stellar education and plenty desire for work, but dire economic prospects—an apt topic both today and at a time when Cavalcanti made his British fiction films, during and immediately after the Second World War.In his native Brazil, Cavalcanti has been celebrated for his avant-garde modernist films, including his debut, Nothing But Time (1926), and his collaboration with Walter Ruttman on Berlin: Symphony of a Metropolis (1927), which serves as an important reference in the...

Starz is looking for an Emmy breakthrough for its four-hour adaptation of E.M. Forster‘s novel “Howards End” written by Oscar-winner Kenneth Lonergan (“Manchester by the Sea”) and directed by Hettie Macdonald. Gold Derby recently spoke with stars Matthew Macfadyen, Hayley Atwell, and Philippa Coulthard, as well as producer Colin Callender about the limited series. Scroll down and click their names below to be taken to their full interviews.
Atwell had some mighty shoes to fill playing headstrong Margaret Schlegel: the role brought Emma Thompson the Best Actress Oscar for the 1992 Merchant Ivory adaptation. “I know Em and spoke to her about it, and she was adamant … not to watch other people’s interpretations of the work you’re about to do,” Atwell explains. “You don’t want to get lost or confused impersonating someone else.” Atwell previously earned a Golden Globe nomination for her work in “The Pillars of the Earth...

Theater-bred UK producer Colin Callender stays ahead of the competition by mining the rich intersection of theater, film, and television. Back in 1983, he produced the Emmy-winning nine-hour miniseries of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s “The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby,” the first original program for Channel 4. He moved stateside in 1986 to shepherd and define the first decade of HBO Films, from Gus Van Sant’s Palme d’Or–winning “Elephant” to Mike Nichols’ “Angels in America,” starring Al Pacino, Emma Thompson, and Meryl Streep.
Callender has chased quality ever since, with such tony productions as “Wolf Hall”, Broadway’s “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” and this season’s limited-series Emmy-contending literary adaptations “Howards End” (BBC/Starz) and “Little Women” (BBC/Masterpiece Theater), both directed by women.
“I wanted to take the high road,” he said. “There is an audience hungry for it and not being served, and that only got more true.

Back in 2010, few cinemagoers had Tom Hiddleston on their radar. Since then the English actor has become a staple on the big screen and tonight was named Best Male Newcomer at the Empire Awards 2012, while Thor - in which he played the villainous Loki - was named Best Sci-fi/Fantasy film.
We'll next be seeing Hiddleston reprising that role in The Avengers, released in the UK on April 26 under the alternative name of Avengers Assemble, and out in the Us on May 4.
Hiddleston said: "It's strange because, to be totally honest, before the beginning of 2010 I had only made one feature film in my entire life, and then I made five in the space of 12 months."
As well as playing Loki in Kenneth Branagh's Thor and American author F Scott Fitzgerald in Woody Allen's nostalgic romantic drama Midnight in Paris, the London-born actor has starred in mentor Joanna Hogg...
