Cinematic adaptations have not always been kind to the work of Stephen King, not least, I suspect, because his books are frequently lengthy, packed with character and plot and slip between time periods with ease. William Goldman, who later had less success adapting Hearts In Atlantis and Dreamcatcher, capitalises on the claustrophobia of King's taut psychological horror in Rob Reiner's take on the tale of a writer (James Caan) who has a car crash and his "number one fan" (Kathy Bates), who takes him in at the same time as taking less than kindly to his decision to kill off her favourite character. Applying physical violence with restraint - although it hits home when it counts - this is all about the psychological sparring between the two, with Bates getting all the best lines, and winning an Oscar for her trouble. The subtext,...

Look, we would’ve been perfectly happy enjoying 11/22/63 without getting into the weeds of the JFK conspiracy, but Stephen King himself took pains to detail how his research for the book convinced him that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. “It is very, very difficult for a reasonable person to believe otherwise,” he writes in the book’s afterword. Since that’s no fun, we sought out some smart people to provide a counterpoint and share their own thoughts about the book’s depictions of Oswald, Kennedy, and the assassination.
In this episode, The Losers’ Club speaks with Blowback co-host (and recent King convert) Brendan James about 11/22/63‘s Oswald, conspiracy in the 21st century, and King’s political evolution over the years — from the paranoia of The Stand to the regret of Hearts in Atlantis to the ghastly spirit of Donald Trump pervading his latest novels (and Twitter account). Finally, Brendan...

It’s a lean month for new original content on HBO/Max. November will see the return of two scripted series in Julia and Rap Sh!t, both of which are debuting their respective second seasons, but this month’s fresh highlight is likely to be Bookie, a new comedy series from the partnership of The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, and Nick Bakay. The show tracks an LA bookie called Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco), whose business is in peril as California movies to legalize sports gambling.
Elsewhere in November, there quite a few interesting documentaries to keep an eye on, and two that jump out as “must watch”. The first is Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, which chronicles the aging comedian’s life and career. The second is the previously-released Little Richard: I Am Everything, which tries to peel back the whitewashed canon of Richard Penniman in a true...

William Hurt, the award-winning actor best known for a slew of 1980s prestige projects like “The Big Chill,” “Body Heat,” and “Broadcast News,” and a side player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, died on Sunday at the age of 71.
He won the Oscar for Best Actor for “Kiss of the Spider Woman” and received two other nominations in that category for “Children of the Lesser God” and “Broadcast News,” and a later Best Supporting Actor nod for “A History of Violence.” The cause of death was complications from pancreatic cancer.
The Juilliard graduate, who worked in New York theater before making his first substantial film in 1980, “Altered States,” had a career most performers can only dream about, and as such worked with nearly every big name in Hollywood. Many took to social media after news spread of his passing.

Anton Yelchin‘s career in Hollywood still resonates with fans on what would have been the actor’s 31st birthday.
Yelchin, who was born on March 11, 1989, and tragically died in June 2016 at 27, had memorable roles in the Star Trek franchise as well as independent films Like Crazy and The Beaver.
The actor’s parents, Irina and Viktor, have kept his legacy alive with the 2019 documentary Love, Antosha, which featured some of his former costars such as Chris Pine, Kristen Stewart, Jennifer Lawrence and Zoe Saldana remembering Yelchin.

The work of Stephen King has a long history of making its way to the big screen with wildly different results. Some land Academy Awards (“Misery”) or become classics (“The Shawshank Redemption”) while others disappear into the film ether But when great material merges with a wonderful adaptation, the result can be a $91 million dollar opening weekend, as was the case with “It: Chapter Two.”
Every adaptation comes with its challenges and even with two movies, you can’t fit all of King’s 1,138 pages onto the big screen. Screenwriter Gary Dauberman, who co-wrote the first chapter and also penned all the of “Annabelle” films, was faced with a dream job that could have become a nightmare: how to update the characters of King’s lovable “Losers Club” for the big screen. We spoke to him about the differences between book and movie, and the things that got lost along the way.

It’s hard to imagine a more heartfelt eulogy than “Love, Antosha,” the emotional new documentary from first-time director Garret Price, about the life and the tragic, sudden, almost unbelievable death of actor Anton Yelchin.
Born Anton Viktorovich Yelchin to immigrant ice-skating superstars from the U.S.S.R., the young actor co-starred in 69 movies and television shows before he was crushed by his own car in a bizarre accident when he was only 27. Mainstream audiences probably knew him best as Anton Chekov, the rookie crew member aboard J.J. Abrams’ rebooted “Star Trek” movie franchise. But since 2000, Yelchin had been working as a child actor in high profile projects like “ER” and “Hearts in Atlantis,” before eventually graduating to mature leading roles in celebrated films like “Like Crazy” and “Green Room.”

Three of Anton Yelchin’s most beloved films will return to theaters this month in the run-up to the release of “Love, Antosha,” a documentary about the late actor’s many creative pursuits which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The theatrical retrospective will feature J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” (2009), Drake Doremus’ “Like Crazy” (2011), and Jeremy Saulnier’s “Green Room” (2015). The screenings are set to take place at New York’s Quad Cinema and Portland’s Regal Fox Tower Cinemas, with additional cites to be announced at a later date.
Directed by Garret Price, “Love, Antosha” features interviews with the actor’s parents, Irina and Viktor Yelchin, as well as many of his high-profile friends and collaborators. While his acting work is well known to many, Price highlights the lesser-known sides of Yelchin’s artistic process by exploring his photographic projects as well as scoring the film entirely with the actor’s original music.

When 27-year-old Anton Yelchin was killed in a freak accident in 2016, the outpouring of grief from the film community was overwhelming and immediate. But for those of us who only knew him onscreen, it was difficult to immediately assess his career. Unlike Heath Ledger, another star of a slightly older generation who died a shockingly young death, Yelchin was a respected and successful actor who nonetheless had yet to find his “Brokeback Mountain” or his “Dark Knight” – a role that could easily define him and clearly demarcate the potential that had been lost. In his short career, he’d made his name as a precocious and prolific child actor, established indie darling cred in “Like Crazy” and “Green Room,” and left his mark on multi-generational franchises like “Star Trek” and “Terminator Salvation.” But who was Anton Yelchin, and what might he have become?

It’s been a mixed bag interviewing child and young teen stars. I remember one teenage actress throwing a hissy fit at her mother because she didn’t want to do the interview. Then there was a five-year girl who looked like a deer in the headlights. She only started to talk when I whipped out photos of my cat. And there was another time when I showed up to interview a teenage actress at her family house and felt like I walked into an episode of “The X-Files.” Of course, I have a wonderful memory with the late Anton Yelchin who was a sensitive old soul at the age of 12 when I interviewed him in 2001 for “Hearts in Atlantis.” I interviewed him one more time-the year before his tragic death and found he was just as sensitive and lovely.

In the wake of Andy Muschietti’s wildly successful adaptation of the author’s terrifying benchmark novel, It, Stephen King’s oeuvre is being plucked clean by studio vultures. With the remake of Pet Sematary expected to begin production next month in Toronto, and The Bone Church having just been optioned by David Ayer’s (Suicide Squad) Cedar Park Entertainment, the Stephen King universe continues to inflate exponentially.
Today, The Tracking Board is reporting that another meaty chunk has been picked from the carcass of King’s canon, The Stand. CBS All Access is planning on converting the 862-page novel into a ten-hour limited series with writer-director Josh Boone (The New Mutants) at the helm. In fact, he’s been attached to an adaptation of the 1978 classic since 2014, initially planning on a three-hour long, R-rated film.

Yelchin such an incredibly talented young actor who has starred in so many great movies like Hearts in Atlantis, Like Crazy, Alpha Dog, Star Trek, Green Room and more.

"This experience is looked at years later using fragments from Mati and Jake’s lives apart, both of them still haunted by the powerful moments they shared. Working backwards and forward with time, and...

(Aotn) It has already been quite a year for Stephen King fans with the theatrical releases of both “The Dark Tower” and “It” and now we can anticipate the upcoming Hulu limited series “Castle Rock”. “Castle Rock” will be a psychological-horror series set in the Stephen King multiverse, it will combine the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland.
Hulu has committed to a 10-episode first season and the project was developed for television by Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason, who serve as executive producers, along with J.J. Abrams, Ben Stephenson and Liz Glotzer. “Castle Rock” is from Bad Robot Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television and it is sure to be epic.

The first trailer for Stephen King's The Dark Tower has arrived, and we found tons of references, clues, and easter eggs...
For a long time, it was thought to be impossible - a film adaptation of Stephen King's fantasy horror epic about a Gunslinger traveling through different worlds to stop an evil Man in Black from destroying the fixed point that holds all of reality together: the Dark Tower. Yet, we'll finally see this story on screen, as the man in black flees across the desert, and the gunslinger follows.
After suffering several setbacks through the years - getting this movie made has been a journey almost as epic as Roland's - The Dark Tower is almost here. Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair) directed and co-wrote the film adaptation. Fellow Danish filmmaker Anders Thomas Jensen helped rewrite the script, which was originally penned by Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner.

Want to make a short film based on one of Stephen King's stories? Chances are that it'll only cost you a dollar...
Stephen King is, you might say, a bit prolific. With over 50 novels, 6 nonfiction books, and 200 short stories to his name (or Richard Bachman's), King has one of the hardest-working pens/typewriters/laptops in the writing world. And best of all, when it comes to King's work, quantity does equal quality.
That's probably why Hollywood is constantly optioning his countless works for big blockbuster film adaptations. Guys like Frank Darabont, Brian De Palma, Stanley Kubrick, George A. Romero, John Carpenter, Lawrence Kasdan, and Rob Reiner have all taken stabs (no pun intended) at his work. Many of them are even great films that hold their own, which is very rare in the novel-to-film adaptation business, especially when the source material is as high-profile as King's.

Now before you say, "Wait, wasn't Hearts in Atlantis already a movie with Anthony Hopkins and Anthon Yelchin?" The answer is yes... and no. That film was adapted from two of the stories in the book of a collection of tales by Stephen King titled Hearts of Atlantis. Those stories were called “Low Men in Yellow Coats” and “Heavenly Shades of Night Are Falling.”
This new film is based on the actual title story from that book, and according to Variety, the movie will simply be called Hearts. The film is set to be directed by Johannes Roberts (The Other Side of the Door).
Hearts is set in 1966, and it's described as "a bittersweet coming-of-age story about a group of college boys and their first time away from home, their obsession and self-destruction, and what it means to be an adult in a world where, in the face of a devastating war no one understands,...

It is a widely accepted fact that some of Stephen King’s best work is his stories about people living their lives, and coming of age against the tapestry of American history. Sure, he’s written some iconic, terrifying stuff that has led to some incredible adaptations (It, Misery, The Shining, Carrie) – but it is his less scary stuff (Stand By Me, Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) that has perhaps had the most dramatic impact. This is surely the category that writer-director Johannes Roberts is aiming for with the upcoming film project Hearts In Atlantis.
The movie will be based upon the second part of the 1999 Stephen King collection of the same name, which comprises five sections – two novellas and three short stories. Together, the tales chronicle a passage of time that encompasses the Vietnam War, and feature a number of characters that recur throughout the collection. The first and...

If you are a fan of the 2001 film Hearts In Atlantis, adapted from Stephen King’s book of the same name, then you might be interested to learn that “Hearts In Atlantis,” the story from the book Hearts In Atlantis, is being made for the first time into a movie which will not be called Hearts In Atlantis, Variety reports. That might seem, at first glance, like a nonsense sentence, but it’s actually not.
You see, Hearts In Atlantis is actually a collection of two novellas and three short stories, one of which is called “Hearts In Atlantis.” When legendary screenwriter William Goldman penned the screenplay for Scott Hicks’ film Hearts In Atlantis, he put the narrative together from two related pieces from that book—Low Men in Yellow Coats and “Heavenly Shades Of Night Are Falling.” Now, fifteen years later, British filmmaker Johannes Roberts (In The Deep ...

While Anton Yelchin might be best remembered for his role in the blockbuster Star Trek franchise, the young actor led a fascinating life before his tragic and untimely death on Sunday. Yelchin was born in Leningrad, Soviet Union, in 1989, roughly two years before the city became St. Petersburg, Russia, after the collapse of the U.S.S.R. His parents, Irina Korina and Viktor Yelchinwere, were famous pair figure skaters who reached celebrity status in Russia as stars of the Leningrad Ice Ballet for 15 years. But despite their popularity and relative wealth, Irina and Viktor fled Russia to make a better life for their son.

The news of Anton Yelchin’s death in a freak accident hit me hard, partly because of the loss of an important young actor and also because I had met him on a few occasions and was impressed by his honesty and humility, as well as his talent. I first became aware of Anton in Scott Hicks’ movie, Hearts in Atlantis, in which he played a lonely boy befriended by a mysterious stranger played by Anthony Hopkins. The interplay between this Oscar-winning icon and a gifted newcomer was surprisingly evenhanded. Yelchin kept you watching him, even when Hopkins was declaiming.

This week’s question: In honor of the late Anton Yelchon, who was killed in a tragic accident early Sunday morning, which was your favorite of his performances?

It’s definitely not his best movie, and maybe it’s not really technically his best acting, but my favorite of Yelchin’s performances is in “Terminator Salvation.” You could tell he tried to sound like Michael Biehn in “The Terminator” in his portrayal of young Kyle Reese, and that meant a lot to me as a fan of these movies. Tragic. Just tragic. That’s the one word going through my mind again and again since word came out yesterday afternoon that actor Anton Yelchin had died in a car accident. He was only 27, taken from us far too soon, and it’s one of those untimely deaths that I’m just having a hard time processing. I interviewed Yelchin a year or so ago while he was out promoting the wonderful film 5 to 7 and he was just a pleasure to speak with, full of life and appreciative of the praise I heaped on him for his performance. I can’t believe he’s gone, but just quickly today I thought I’d write a big about his work and pay tribute to the man. He may have passed, but his performances and movies will be around forever. Yelchin came up as a child actor, first capturing our attention with...

It’s with the heaviest of hearts that I have to report that Anton Yelchin has passed way at the age of twenty seven. A young actor of incredible talent who got better each time he appeared on screen, he was pronounced dead earlier today after a freak car accident found him pinned to a security gate outside his home. After getting his break on ER in 2000, Yeltchin rose to prominence with roles in Hearts in Atlantis and Along Came a Spider before getting his big break playing Zack Mazursky in 2006’s Alpha Dog. This lead to him taking the lead role in the criminally underrated Charlie Bartlett, which saw him go toe to toe with a Robert Downey Jr. at the start of his comeback, which itself lead to Yelchin breaking into the mainstream with 2009, bringing his charisma and charm to the roles of Chekov in Jj Abrams’s...

Anton Yelchin passed away at the tragically young age of 27, at a time when many actors’ careers are just gathering momentum. But Yelchin had already amassed an impressive filmography that stretched back to his childhood, with an eclectic mixture of blockbusters, TV projects, and smaller efforts. “I’m just a huge supporter of this universe of filmmaking,” he told IndieWire in 2011. “It’s just fundamental. I can’t stress that enough.” Here, the IndieWire team shares their thoughts on why Yelchin stood out.
A Rare Screen Presence
Yelchin was the rare young actor to convey a plucky disposition while something gentler and melancholic lurked beneath the surface. As the energetic teen offspring of the troubled shrink on “Huff,” Yelchin was often the sole voice of reason in a sea of anxiety-riddled adults. While they grappled with middle-age, he was tasked with calling them on the pithy nature of their problems.

I've been a fan of Anton Yelchin ever since I first saw him star alongside Anthony Hopkins in the 2001 big screen adaptation of Hearts in Atlantis. When I saw him in that film I remember saying to myself that this kid was going to be a big star. I loved him in that film, and since then I followed his career pretty closely. Everything he's done since has been top notch work.
Earlier today I learned that Yelchin had died in some kind of freak car accident, and it was a devastating blow. He was only 27 years old! He had an incredible life and career ahead of him and learning of his passing kind of hit me hard.
