’Pain Hustlers’ and ’Fingernails’ have gone to Netflix and Apple, respectively.
Streaming giants have struck a pair of heavyweight worldwide deals on packages in Cannes, with Netflix swooping for Emily Blunt drama Pain Hustlers and Apple snapping up Riz Ahmed and Jessie Buckley sci-fi romance Fingernails.
Both transactions are understood to have closed on Saturday night (May 21). In the case of Pain Hustlers, the deal reportedly in the 50m region puts paid to early thinking here that Netflix would be shy to get its wallet out after a punishing first quarter subscriber loss and precipitous market cap drop.

Reflecting on 2018 through the lens of its cinema proves to be an ironic feat – films that explored new ideas reflective of our culture premiered alongside a crop of “lost” or reimagined works and there was no shortage of cinematic treasures and landmarks. It was a year of exciting new work that provided a commentary on our current political conditions in various ways from Frederick Wiseman’s portrait of rural America Monrovia, Indiana to films that explored the nature of work and race such as Andrew Bujalski’s Support the Girls and Boots Riley’s timely Sorry to Bother You. When seen through the prism of film history, 2018 might be known as a year of rediscovery as it offered our first chance to see lost masterworks like The Other Side of the Wind and Amazing Grace alongside repurposed footage combined with recollections that made films like Shirkers and They Shall Not Grow Old such transcendent experiences.

When The CW's reboot of the cult favorite TV series Charmed was announced, the first question on everyone's minds was who would be playing the "Charmed Ones," the trio of supernaturally chosen sister witches. Instead of casting big-name actresses, the network chose instead to select three actresses who have worked steadily but haven't had breakout roles just yet. The middle sister, Mel Vera, is played by Melonie Diaz, a longtime staple of the indie film world.
Diaz began her career in the New York theater scene, appearing in off-Broadway plays and fringe festivals. This work led to her entry into the film world, with supporting roles in small and independent films. Her early-career credits include the direct-to-video dramedy Double Whammy and 2002's Raising Victor Vargas, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’re highlighting the noteworthy titles that have recently hit platforms. Check out this week’s selections below and an archive of past round-ups here.
Disobedience (Sebastían Lelio)
It starts with a London-based rabbi speaking from his heart about the complexities of life. He stammers through — obviously ailing — until collapse. Suddenly we’re in New York City watching a photographer in-session with tattooed seniors. The phone rings and we know. She (Rachel Weisz’s Ronit Krushka) is the daughter of that rabbi and he has passed away. The assumption is that both these worlds will subsequently collide in reunion. Tears will be shed and hugs had. But that’s not quite the case with Sebastían Lelio’s Disobedience. Ronit has been gone for some time and the leaving wasn’t under good terms.

Amazon Prime Video has confirmed that several of its original series will be debuting new episodes on the streaming service in August, including the first season of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.” John Krasinski, who is red-hot following the success of his winter hit “A Quiet Place,” takes on the role of the CIA spy that has been played on the big screen by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine.
Likewise, there will be plenty of movies making their first appearances on Amazon Prime Video including the action comedy “Gringo,” which stars David Oyelowo as a businessman who unwittingly becomes involved with a Mexican drug cartel.
Unlike Netflix, Amazon does not disclose the shows and movies leaving the service in any given month. We’ve done some digging and unearthed a few titles that will be exiting Amazon Prime Video in the first week of August. News...

It's clear the young star is a pro, even when she gets hit in the head midperformance. Before her debut LP Zentropy — one of our favorite albums of last year — came out on Brooklyn micro-indie label Double Double Whammy, Greta Kline would release torrents of unpolished, sweetly melodic songs on Bandcamp — first as Ingrid Superstar, then as Frankie Cosmos, the name she still uses for what’s now a three-piece band. She processed her music quickly, almost automatically: write, record, upload, publish, forget. She didn’t think about who would hear it, or if anyone would hear it at all. "Two years ago, I would literally just write a song and record it directly into my computer, and then put it online and never listen to it again,” Kline tells Vulture over the phone from her apartment in New York, the city she still calls home when she gets time off the road. "Now it's more like, ‘When should we release it? How are we going...

Well, we've probably been put off European package holidays for life. No matter how glittering the sea looks, and how luxurious the villa is, and how beautiful the view is, we can't help but feel like we'd rather be anywhere than Ex on the Beach. 1. There are yet more words for us to add to our Ex on the Beach dictionary.
First up it was a piece of slang from Frankie, who was still fuming about Marco going on a date with Emily despite his pinky promise (is it not a hanging offence to break a pinky promise?). Well, she refused to sleep with him when he "tried to bed" her (her saying this made me ridiculously happy - who still uses "bed" as a verb?). Anyway,...

Justin specifically earned the title "#Hashtag of the Year" because he was the trending topic of 2013. Between his new albums, his tours, his movies, and all the viral videos with Jimmy Fallon, it's been one incredible year for Justin. On Monday night, Justin and Jessica Biel stepped out for the GQ Men of the Year dinner in NYC as one of the honorees. With 2012 coming to a close, the TV Fanatic staff will be gathering around our virtual Round Table on a nearly daily basis.
Yesterday, we debated the year's Best Feud. Now, we sit back and answer: Who was the Best Villain on television in 2012?
Christine Orlando: I've got to go with the first villain I ever truly loved to hate. The iconic J.R. Ewing from Dallas. I'll never forget Larry Hagman's portrayal of the snarky, vengeful, funny, dastardly oil man who would cut his enemies off at the knees and manipulate his family to his advantage... yet never stopped trying to make his Daddy proud. I'm ever so grateful he got to wreck havoc on Dallas one more time in 2012.

Representative Anthony Weiner has revealed to friends that he plans to resign his seat, following growing pressure from colleagues in Congress, according to the NY Times.
Weiner reached the decision to step down after having discussions with his wife, Huma Abedin, who returned Tuesday after a Middle East trip with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
The pressure has been building for the 46-year-old to make an exit, as the very public scandal caused top Democratic leaders to voice their opinion.

Two of ABC’s Tuesday “bubble” shows had a little, qualified something to smile about this week, as both V and Detroit 1-8-7 registered increases (albeit opposite largely repeaty competition).
V wrapped up its shortened second season with an audience of 5.3 million total viewers and a 1.8 rating in the coveted 18-49 demo — up 6 percent week-to-week in both measures. Detroit‘s penultimate freshman outing in turn copped 5.8 million viewers and a 1.3 rating, up 14 and 8 percent, respectively. In fact, the cop drama hit its best numbers since Dec. 7.(Reminder: The Detroit 1-8-7 season finale airs this Sunday at 10/9c.)

For some unexplained reason, Jessica Alba and Kat Dennings both had nude photo leaks today. Alba's feature the then-pregnant A-lister and her belly and breasts in all their glory, while indie darling Dennings cavorts for a stunning striptease. Fleshbot, which is hosting the uncensored, very-nsfw sets, understandably titled this story "Double Whammy". For many gents, the Dennings photo represents the real prize. To me, Dennings is a beautiful, talented and sexy young woman who does not come across as trashy or desperate for fame. Internet fanboys see her as the ultimate "girl next door," way cooler than most anyone else in Hollywood. For years, she's tried to adapt Don DeLillo's highbrow book End Zone for a theatrical release, but the studios don't think anyone wants to see a serious film about nuclear war. Whoever reports on the latest gets the fans' attention and it's a win-win situation. Everyone is happy, right? But do we have to feature Rob again? How about Kristen? That will happen sooner than you think. Just wait and see! Back to Rob. As you know, we've launched our first special project (http://www.themovie-fanatic.com/rpattinson/) and it involves Mr. Pattinson's latest movie called Little Ashes (http://www.littleashes-themovie.com/). We've asked for volunteers and the fans responded so overwhelmingly, we were stunned! Now that things have calmed down a bit, one of the group's foremost...

Actress Elizabeth Hurley is suffering the humiliation of being attached to another movie flop - which has so far bombed in her native Britain. Double Whammy has pulled a measly $40,000 in its first two weeks in British cinemas, despite a promotional campaign which cost the film's bosses $400,000. Kevin O'Sullivan, movie critic for Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper, says, "I hesitate to use the words 'Liz', 'Hurley' and 'actress' in the same sentence for fear of prosecution under the Trades Description Act." Her latest flop adds to Hurley's long list of box office disasters. The leggy brunette's last film Serving Sara, in which she starred alongside Friends favorite Matthew Perry, went straight to video after critics slammed it.

Elizabeth Hurley and Denis Leary's new films have reportedly been singled out as turkeys already by early audiences. The pair, who are close friends in real life, have completed two films together, Bad Boy and Double Whammy, hopeful their off-screen chemistry would transfer onto the big screen. Not so, says a source in British newspaper The Daily Mail: "Hopes were high that the chemistry between Leary and Hurley would result in a hit romantic comedy, but it is shockingly bad. Double Whammy won't reach cinemas either. It makes Bad Boy look like Citizen Kane."...

British actress Liz Hurley has ditched her sexy image in favor of a more dowdy look for her new film, Double Whammy. Her legions of male fans will hardly recognize her as she steps into the role of a psychologist who sports a pair of thick-rimmed glasses and frizzy hair. She says, "I suppose this girl could have been me, had I decided to have a grown-up life and went to college instead of going into showbiz. My character, Dr Ann Beamer, takes her job so seriously and is very committed to alternative medicine. It's so un-me. She's not flirty, or silly or show-offy. Absolutely nothing like me at all."...

Comedian Denis Leary was terrified of his sex scenes with Brit babe Elizabeth Hurley in their new movie. Despite reports that the two stars had a romance on the set of new comedy Double Whammy, the film's director said there was little chemistry between the two. Tom DiCillo said, "Denis was terrified of taking his clothes off during the love scene. "When the camera rolled for that particular sequence, Liz was very professional and disrobed but Denis wouldn't even take his shirt off. I was like, 'Denis, what's the problem?', but he was adamant that he was keeping his shirt on. Apparently his body got a bad write-up in a review for his last film. Then I read all these newspaper stories saying that Liz and Denis were a couple. I was really upset because I thought Liz and I had something good going on!"...

Elizabeth Hurley stopped a fight between her pal Denis Leary and a New York waiter. The pair were enjoying a drink together after finishing working on thriller Double Whammy, when Leary and the waiter squared up. A friend says, "Neither would back down. It was getting very heated and it looked like a fight was going to start." Liz, 35, bravely moved between the two guys and broke it up, telling them both to "calm down". Adds the friend, "Dennis has a fiery temper and this guy was just plain obnoxious."...
