Iconic Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki emerged from his self-announced retirement, which began a few years after he made “The Wind Rises” (2013), to tell the autobiographical story of “The Boy and the Heron.” Studio Ghibli president Toshio Suzuki had to reassemble the staff of the production company to complete the task, and the hard work was recognized with the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in March 2024.
The 2023 film added another Oscar to the animation director’s accolades after “Spirited Away” won the Best Animated Feature Oscar in 2011. The Academy Award win will send the film back into theaters for a limited time, and fresh off the win at the beginning of March, the film set two different streaming homes depending on where you live.

Quick Links The Symbolism and Culture in Spirited Away Alludes to Dark Themes According to One Fan Theory How Does No-Face Fit Into this Spirited Away Fan Theory? What Does Hayao Miyazaki Think of the Prostitution Metaphor Theory? One Spirited Away fan theory implies darker themes like prostitution and human trafficking lie beneath the story. Evidence for this fan theory includes bathhouse setting, Chihiro's name being taken from her, and No-Face trying to buy her companionship. Miyazaki's intended inspiration for Spirited Away was innocent, not dark as the fan theory suggests.
For many, Hayao Miyazaki's 2001 classic Spirited Away is the ultimate comfort movie, packed full of incredible animation and whimsical characters. On the surface, Spirited Away is a coming-of-age movie about a young girl recognizing her fear about getting older, eventually losing the protection and guidance of her parents in a strange and terrifying world, and learning to stand on her own two feet.

Avengers: Age of Ultron features a nod to Hayao Miyazaki's Laputa robot from his 1986 film, Castle in the Sky. Miyazaki was thanked in the credits of Avengers: Age of Ultron, showing the influence he has had on Hollywood films. The possibility of Miyazaki's creations existing in the MCU multiverse opens up endless opportunities for crossover.
Hayao Miyazaki is a living legend of Japanese animation, and the influence of his work can be felt in all sorts of media, including 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron. Having animated, written, and directed some of the best Studio Ghibli films, Miyazaki’s legacy lives on in heartwarming and surreal anime classics like Princess Mononoke, and My Neighbor Totoro, among many others. The Japanese auteur has also received appreciation from the Oscars, earning Best Animated Feature in 2003 for Spirited Away and repeating the feat in 2024, with The Boy and The Heron winning over Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away is a film that has delighted audiences since its initial release in 2001. Following Chihiro, Spirited Away teaches lessons in friendship, love, and bravery. As courageous as Chihiro is at the end of the film, she didn't start out her adventure that way; Chihiro had to undergo some major character development to become the hero of her own story.
Without the guidance of her parents, Chihiro initially had to rely on herself to learn some of life's most valuable lessons. As the story unfolds, Chihiro makes friends with some interesting characters, each of whom had some wisdom to impart to the young girl.

So many of us (but certainly not all…) were pulling for The Boy and the Heron to take home the Best Animated Feature Oscar; and when it was announced as the winner, there was a collective disappointment that its director, Hayao Miyazaki, wasn’t in attendance. But it may have less to do with international travel or another project in the pipeline than it does embarrassment.
Toshio Suzuki – who co-founded Studio Ghibli with Hayao Miyazaki in the mid-’80s – recently said that his partner was skeptical of stepping out in public because of his seemingly constant claims of retirement. “When he says, ‘I won’t show myself to the world anymore,’ I believe that’s how he truly feels. He doesn’t want to repeat the foolishness of explaining and then lying. So, I’ll handle that part [public relations] myself.”
But there was nothing foolish about a second Oscar, and Hayao...

To say that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was great would be a major understatement, as it greatly impacted how major studios perceived 3D animation. Following its impeccable quality, accompanied by a great story, arguably the best of all Spider-Man features. the Shameik Moore-led film was deservedly awarded the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
And with its sequel, Across the Spider-Verse, being on par with the first one, it seemed like another Academy win awaited the IP, but it fell inches short of Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron. Reacting to this loss, lead star Moore took to social media to share a one-word response “Robbed”, which landed him in hot waters, and the actor has finally broken his silence amidst the backlash.

Hayao Miyazaki stands as a luminary in the anime and animation realm, wielding multiple roles – director, producer, scriptwriter, animator, author, manga artist, and Studio Ghibli's co-owner. Reshaping the landscape, he was one of the pioneers of elevating anime beyond teenage audiences. His magnum opus, “Spirited Away,” broke records and became the first anime to win an Oscar. In 2014, he earned an Honorary Academy Award, a testament to his cinematic impact. A prolific storyteller since 1972, Miyazaki, continues to come up with titles that top the category, although his latest one, “The Boy and the Heron” could possibly be his last.
11 writers of Asian Movie Pulse who have watched at least 8 of his feature films voted for this list, in which we present his 12 films in order of quality.
12. The Castle of Cagliostro (1979)
Before the witty antihero “Sherlock Hound”, there was “Lupin the 3rd”, grandson of the legendary thief Arsène Lupin.

It had been more than two decades since Hayao Miyazaki won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, having first taken home gold with 2002’s Spirited Away. Until this year, he only saw just two more nominations, with Howl’s Moving Castle and The Wind Rises losing out to Wallace & Gromit and Elsa & Anna. But this past weekend, at 83, Miyazaki once again came out victorious, edging out the likes of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Pixar’s Elemental. While many of us cheered the achievement, there was one sourpuss who thought the movie he starred in was “robbed”.
Shameik Moore, who voiced Miles Morales / Spider-Man in Across the Spider-Verse, took to social media on the night of the Academy Awards to say that his movie was “*robbed”, prompting followers to call out the arrogance of the comment. As such, Moore addressed the response soon after, admitting he was bitter. “Respect to the winners.

Following its victory in the Best Animated Feature category at the 2024 Oscars, The Boy and the Heron will finally be landing on streaming. The movie is set to arrive on Max, the streaming service from HBO, later this year.
The Boy and the Heron was directed by Hayao Miyazaki, the legendary co-founder of Japan’s Studio Ghibli. While the animation house has produced a number of projects over the last decade, this film was the first since 2013’s The Wind Rises to be directed by Miyazaki himself.
The English dub for the movie, advertised as the animation master’s final film, boasts an impressive number of A-list actors, including an impossible to identify Robert Pattinson, Florence Pugh (voicing both the younger and much older version of the same character), Christian Bale, Willem Dafoe, Mark Hamill, and Gemma Chan.

Howl's Moving Castle.I returned to the films of Hayao Miyazaki last year because the kids I nanny in Brooklyn—A, eight, and J, six—happened upon Studio Ghibli Fest while they were away over the summer in Upstate New York, visiting their grandparents in a town where they had spent the early pandemic. Of the two, J’s infatuation with Miyazki is least surprising: his interests include black holes, rare crystals, and mushrooms, especially the poisonous varieties. Through his eyes, I rediscovered Miyazaki, rewatching once-familiar films with a new attunement to their strangeness. In the process I was reminded of first meeting J, when he was four years old and still reeling from his family’s relocation from a house Upstate to their apartment in Brooklyn. He was particularly incensed about having to wear shoes, which I imagine crystallized the totality of the transformation: in that passage from grass to concrete,...

Best Picture winner “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” were the big Oscar craft winners March 10, each winning three awards. Christopher Nolan’s historical thriller about the atomic bomb grabbed cinematography, editing, and original score, while Yargos Lanthimos’ surreal “Frankenstein” gender-bender snagged costume design, production design, and makeup and hairstyling.
The rest went to “Godzilla Minus One” (visual effects), “The Zone of Interest” (sound), and “Barbie”. The lone “Barbie” win was a major disappointment for Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster, which was expected to also take costume design and/or production design for the inventive Mattel-inspired fashion and world-building.
The wins for “Godzilla Minus One” and “The Zone of Interest” were both upsets: Takashi Yamazaki’s Kaiju actioner bested Gareth Edwards’ AI-themed “The Creator,” which won the Ves prize, and Jonathan Glazer’s Holocaust drama about the banality of evil (the international feature film Oscar winner) overtook “Oppenheimer,” which won the...
