When we think of the iconic portrayal of Dr. Otto Octavius / Doctor Octopus in Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 2 (2004), one name instantly springs to mind: Alfred Molina. The latter’s performance as the villainous Doc Ock is widely considered to be among the finest performances of the entire Spider-Man film franchise.
But what if we told you that the London-born actor, 70, might not have even been a part of the film without the crucial role of Raimi’s wife, Gillian Greene? Can you think of anyone else who could portray the multifaceted villain with such finesse?
Alfred Molina as Dr. Octopus in Spider-Man 2
While Molina is a seasoned and talented actor with an impressive résumé, it was Greene’s keen eye behind the scenes that ultimately led to Molina’s casting as Otto Octavius.

Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers opens in an intentionally disorienting manner: We are in New Rochelle, New York for a tennis challenger. Wearing cheap shorts that resemble boxers, Patrick Zweig (Josh O’Connor) battles Art Donaldson (Mike Faist), clad in head-to-toe Uniqlo, while the glamorous Tashi Donaldson (Zendaya) watches tensely from the stands. Flashbacks, first from a few days prior, and then way back to 13 years ago, slowly fill in the gaps on how these two former best friends ended up in such a position: playing against one another in a mid-tier tennis challenger comically sponsored by a tire brand.
Even as Challengers zips back and forth in time with boundless energy, the narrative, to Guadagnino and screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes’ credit, is never hard to follow. Sometimes the foreknowledge afforded by time jumps end up sacrificing drama, but in Challengers this sacrifice makes space for us to feel the burden of these broken relationships.

Max Payne’s remakes may be in development, but who said that doesn’t give other developers to cook up their own bullet time experiences? On that note, there’s a new exciting project in the works that looks like a serious combination of Max Payne, My Friend Pedro, and John Wick making the most of the cinematic gameplay experience you could hope for.
The game is called The Hong Kong Massacre and is being crafted by two individuals, working in a studio called Vreski that is based in Malmö, Sweden. Even though the game’s press kit shows a trailer of a game that looks very different, the narrative seems to have stayed unchanged over the course of its development.
Max Payne’s remakes will take a while, until then, have a taste of The Hong Kong Massacre This one is really looking like a first-person version of Max Payne!

Bully, the indie rock project of Alicia Bognanno, has shared a devastating piano ballad titled “Atom Bomb.” Stream the new song below.
On the stripped-down track, Bognanno doesn’t hold anything back while opening up about a former lover who left her behind. “I’m ashamed, I lose myself in people like I lost myself in you,” she sings, her voice full of pain. “I bite my tongue, I don’t wanna give in/ You’re already gone and I’ve been living/ Like an atom bomb waiting to be lit.”
In a statement, Bognanno explained that “Atom Bomb” wasn’t always a piano ballad. “The song was originally recorded with a drum machine and electric guitar; it was also quite a bit faster,” she said about the standalone track. “When I played the demo for [producer] Jt Daly, he had the idea of moving it to the piano. Militarie Gun have announced Life Under the Sun, a new EP due on January 26th featuring reimaginings of songs from their debut album, Life Under the Gun. Along with the announcement, they shared the single “My Friends Are Having a Hard Time” featuring Manchester Orchestra.
Life Under the Gun debuted in summer 2023 and served as a proper introduction to the blend of kinda-sorta hardcore sonics and personal songwriting that earned Militarie Gun a spot on Consequence‘s list of 15 rising artists to watch in 2024. The track “My Friends Are Having a Hard Time” — which has now been reimagined as a duet with Manchester Orchestra’s Andy Hull — exemplifies that blend.

Water from Your Eyes have shared a cover of Ween’s “If You Could Save Yourself (You’d Save Us All),” as part of Sounds of Saving’s “Songs That Found Me at The Right Time” series.
The CoSign alums picked the 2003 track to cover in part because of how relatable it was to vocalist Rachel Brown. “The reason that I even started making music by myself was ’cause I was really mentally unwell, but I didn’t really know how to communicate,” they explained in a Q&a accompanying the release. “I was like really depressed and suicidal for most of high school. I spent a lot of time thinking that there was no other option besides to have terrible thoughts that ruined my day…I just started writing songs ’cause it was like the only place that felt appropriate to be expressing the things that I was thinking about.

Wet Leg, Jason Isbell, Tegan and Sara, and more have contributed to Noise for Now: Vol. 1, an upcoming compilation album benefitting abortion access. It arrives on November 24th as part of Record Store Day 2023.
Noise for Now is also the name of the non-profit that helmed the compilation, and their work has become even more pertinent since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022. The organization launched their eponymous record label to release their first album, which also features exclusive songs from Sleater-Kinney, My Morning Jacket, Fleet Foxes, Cat Power, and more.
Many of these songs were also featured on Good Music to Ensure Safe Abortion Access to All, another benefit compilation from 2022 that was only available as a Bandcamp download for one day. Noise for Now: Vol. 1, however, will be a vinyl-only release, pressed on clear wax and packaged with a “Liberate Abortion” print by Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon.

The new Apple TV+ series “The Buccaneers” may take place in the 1870s, but the soundtrack is downright modern.
Adapted from Edith Wharton’s unfinished novel, “The Buccaneers” centers on young American women descended from old English society who are making waves in both America and England. Kristine Froseth plays Annabelle “Nan” St. George, the central character who finds herself caught in a love triangle between two very different men — Guy Thwarte (Matthew Broome) and Theo (Guy Remmers) who is a Duke. Marriage is the last thing on Nan’s mind until she meets first Guy, and then Theo.
Other ensemble stars include Alisha Boe as Conchitta Closson, Imogen Waterhouse as Virginia “Jinny” St. George, Josie Totah as Mabel Elmsworth and Aubri Ibrag as Lizzy Elmsworth. The St. Georges face pressure from their mother (Christina Hendricks) to find husbands wealthy enough to take care of them once they marry. This...

Sharon Van Etten shared a new single called “Close to You,” which she co-wrote with Courtney Barnett for the official soundtrack to the upcoming Apple Original drama series The Buccaneers.
Equal parts eerie and alluring, “Close to You” sees Van Etten infuse her classic Americana-inspired rock with a heavy wash of dreamy reverb, cooing lines like: “I got a taste of being with you, don’t wanna waste more time,” “put on your best dress and get out of your head,” and “get away and I’ll stay close to you.”
The song was produced by Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa, who also produced the entire soundtrack: “It was a truly incredible experience working with this group of uniquely talented artists,” she said in a press release. “Everyone brought their A-game and taught me something invaluable about the creative process. Witnessing these artists map each character’s journey through song was...

Britney Spears’ estranged husband, Sam Asghari, defended his ex-wife against “bully” Donald Trump Jr. on Sunday.
Trump Jr. posted a side-by-side comparison of the pop icon: on the left was a photo of Spears posing in a cutoff t-shirt and skirt, which the former president’s son labeled, “America under Trump.” On the right was a still from a recent video that Spears posted in which she appeared to be dancing with knives. Trump Jr. labeled this photo “America under Biden.”
Asghari responded to the post, writing that “It’s not okay to be a bully” on his Instagram story and tagging Trump Jr.

Danny Masterson’s wife Bijou Phillips has filed for divorce. The split comes less than two weeks after the That ‘70s Show star, 47, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for raping two women at his home in Los Angeles between 2001 and 2003.
Phillips named “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split, according to the filing, which took place on Sept. 18 in Santa Barbara Superior Court.

There’s been a lot of jealous talk about nepotism in the film world lately, but who would really want to come into the movie world as a, what, fourth-generation Huston? There are likely swords already being sharpened for Jack Huston, the handsome, charming, 40-year-old nephew of Anjelica, grandson of John and great-grandson of Walter. But his directing debut, Day of the Fight, which premiered this week in the Venice Film Festival’s Horizons Extra section, is certainly worthy of the family name. It’s a little earnest, sometimes a bit too style-conscious, and Huston is inclined to put performance before story every time. But the emotional input really earns its payoff in a confident, imaginatively mounted calling card.
For many, Huston is off to a flying start with the casting of Michael Pitt, a terrific actor rescued from a life of Dawson’s Creek himbo-dom by Larry Clark in his...

If you ever had any doubt about how corporate mergers can make for strange bedfellows — and it’s 2023, so you should have gotten this memo long ago — one need look no further than After the Bite, a documentary programmed to play like the answer to the generally unasked question, “What would happen if Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav forced HBO to participate in Shark Week?”
Presumably, the creative origins of Ivy Meeropol’s (Bully. Coward. Victim. The Story of Roy Cohn) film and Discovery’s annual celebration of all things toothy and ichthyological were completely separate. But following its initial airing on HBO, After the Bite will migrate over to Max, where it can be promoted next to such Shark Week titles as Serial Killer Red Sea Attacks, The Shark of the Moral Universe Bends Toward Carnage and Great White Fight Club (only two of those are real).

Rockstar Games are no strangers to controversy, with the developers having become the subject of infamous scandals ranging from Grand Theft Auto’s Hot Coffee mod to the banning of Bully in several countries. However, despite decades of shocking conservative parents by taking gaming to the next level, I think no one would disagree that the project which best represents the company’s dedication to the extreme is 2003’s video game Manhunt, a gritty snuff simulator that takes stealth games into a decidedly terrifying direction.
Borrowing from horrific urban legends and schlocky exploitation flicks in equal measure, the title became a disturbing cult hit that’s still cited today as one of the most gruesome games ever made. And two decades after its release, I think that it’s time to look back on the origins of this strange little experiment in order to find out why there’s never...

Clark has released his tenth studio album, the Thom Yorke-produced Sus Dog, via Throttle Records, and has shared a music video for the song, “Medicine,” which features vocals from Yorke. Watch the music video for the single below.
Sus Dog was executive produced by Yorke, and features Clark going in a new direction. The first album of his to “fully focus on his voice,” the record shows the 43-year-old electronic musician in a more intimate, uplifting setting than his previous work.
The single “Medicine” demonstrates this — beneath a slow, stuttering beat and a bed of retro synths, Clark’s smooth, airy voice resonates with intimacy. In a press statement, he described the song as being about “a perfect day in nature with my wife, but also chancers, dread of time, humans as animals, addiction, the inner judge, and how it’s always other people’s narcissism, right?”

Lucky for us, Bully is releasing a new album. Lucky for You, the latest release from Alicia Bognanno’s indie rock project, is out June 2nd via Sub Pop, and the announcement comes with lead single “Days Move Slow” as well as new 2023 tour dates.
A press release promises that Lucky for You comes chock-full of “punk grit, crunchy shoegaze bliss, and an explosive Britpop bop,” and if we know anything about Bully, we can expect plenty of guitar shredding and feisty vocals.
Bognanno recorded the album last year between Mmk Studios and her Nashville home: “With every record, I feel more and more secure in terms of doing what I want,” she says in a statement. “For this one, I wanted to be as creative as possible with these songs.” Pre-orders for the album are ongoing.

Is this a parent-teacher conference? No, it’s just Soccer Mommy and Bully on a song! On Wednesday, Bully released a collaboration with Soccer Mommy titled “Lose You,” and announced a U.S. tour.
This is the first time since Bully’s debut EP in 2014 that Bully’s Alicia Bognanno has welcomed a feature on one of her songs. The visualizer for the track sees a woman being chased by a dog underwater.

Bully, the alt-rock project of Alicia Bognanno, returns today with a new song called “Lose You” featuring backup vocals from Sophie Allison of Soccer Mommy.
“Lose You” attempts to reckon with the idea that even a love that seems like it’ll last forever isn’t necessarily immortal. Taking cues from late ’80s and ’90s shoegaze pioneers, the track is driven by a steadily, thumping beat that backdrops Bognanno’s fuzzed-out guitars: “Either way I’m gonna lose you,” she and Allison lament in harmony, before a ripper of a guitar solo near the song’s end.
“When ‘Lose You’ came about it was the first time I’ve considered having someone else sing on a Bully song,” Bognanno said in a press release. “I love Sophie’s voice and have always admired everything she does so to me it was a no brainer. Watching her soar out of the...

Plot: After a religious young woman joins a group of truck stop sex workers (a.k.a. lot lizards), someone starts murdering people in and around the truck stop.
Review: After making a handful of crime dramas and thrillers, writer/director John Swab shifts into the horror genre with his fifth feature Candy Land – but he definitely didn’t just dive into formula or clichê with his first horror project, as evident from the fact that he cited ‘90s cult films like Bully and Welcome to the Dollhouse as sources of inspiration. Candy Land has been described as a truck stop slasher, and it does become that in its second half, but the influence of ‘90s indie dramas is clearly felt in the movie. It’s even set in the ‘90s; around Christmas 1996, to be exact. So it’s a bit of a shame that it’s being released in January,...

Some of the most powerful, viscerally emotional films in recent months have been pleas for abortion rights, from the 1960s-set French drama Happening to the documentary The Janes, about an underground network of illegal abortion providers.
Cynthia Lowen takes the opposite approach in her coolly cerebral pro-choice documentary, Battleground, which journeys inside the anti-abortion movement in order to show reproductive rights advocates what they’re up against today. With the subjects’ willing participation, and without any voiceover to lead viewers’ opinions, the filmmakers unobtrusively go along to rallies, listen in on strategy sessions and interview leaders of top anti-abortion groups. The results are far from cheap and easy caricatures. Lowen (director of the documentaries Bully and Netizens, about online harassment of women) does not find rabid zealots, but sincere, media-savvy, well-organized women — presented respectfully throughout — who have been playing the long game for...

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is just around the corner, and fans are already having a blast poking fun at the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s continual expansion into comic book lore as an IP-driven franchise. On Twitter, users joked that to fully understand the latest installment, people had to do everything from catching up on ABC’s hit sitcom “Abbott Elementary” to perusing the entirety of the Bible.
The meme format is a variation of the following: “Not gonna spoil anything, but make sure to watch [insert tangentially connected Marvel project or something else entirely here] in preparation for ‘Doctor Strange 2.’”
Some users took the opportunity to promote their favorite movies, like “Paddington 2,” which in and of itself is a meme, after people noticed that the animated fare surpassed “Citizen Kane” to reach an elusive 100 rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Others pointed to unrelated TV series, like Netflix’s smash LGBTQ+ hit “Heartstopper” and the Quinta Brunson-starring “Abbott Elementary.

November is a good month for saying goodbye on HBO Max. The streaming platform will host the final 2021 episodes of HBO late-night staples “Real Time with Bill Maher” and the Emmy Award-winning “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” the season finales of Max originals “Love Life” and “Doom Patrol,” and also provide home viewers their last opportunity to watch “Dune” on HBO Max until sometime in 2022 (“Dune” leaves HBO Max on November 21).
But beyond those conclusions, there are some huge premieres as well: Oscar contender “King Richard” arrives on November 19 with Will Smith in the lead role, the back-half of “Gossip Girl” Season 1 will make its debut at some point, and the HBO Music Box series continues with the Alanis Morrisette documentary “Jagged” (which the singer roundly criticized) and a new feature on Dmx. Gretchen Carlson, the former Fox News host who sued the network for sexual harassment and won, will be the subject of a new documentary, “In Her Own Words,” which will examine the use of non-disclosure agreements to silence whistleblowers. The film will also chronicle the efforts of Carlson and Julie Roginsky to launch Lift Our Voices, a nonprofit initiative which is trying to eliminate NDAs and mandatory arbitration clauses from the workplace.

Former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson will discuss her fight against Roger Ailes in a new documentary feature, as well as her ongoing effort to end the use of nondisclosure agreements, or NDAs, in the workplace.
Though she remains bound by her own NDA, Carlson is fully participating and collaborating with the filmmakers of the documentary, which depicts her own activism along with the goal of reclaiming the narrative of her battle with Ailes. In 2016, Carlson’s allegations of sexual harassment resulted in her exit from Fox News and a settlement package in exchange for signing an NDA to not speak about Ailes or Fox News again.
The film, titled “In Her Own Words,” is directed by Emmy nominee Cynthia Lowen. The doc will dive into the consequences of forced arbitration and NDAs, examining how it can impact every facet of a person’s life, with many victims forced to...

Hopefully March will bring respite from crippling snow storms and frigid temperatures for much of the globe. And if it doesn’t? Well, Hulu’s got some new streaming options at least!
Hulu’s list of new releases for March 2021 are relatively slight on Hulu originals. Thankfully, one beloved original of note is coming back this month. Solar Opposites will premiere all episodes of its second season on March 26. This sci-fi animated comedy from Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland is a breath of fresh alien air.
On the movie side of things, Hulu is premiering Boss Level on March 5. This actioner will star the delightful Frank Grillo and the decidedly less delightful Mel Gibson. Speaking of delightful though, the documentary Kid 90 will arrive on March 12. This comes from Punky Brewster star Soleil Moon Frye and features hours of footage she shot in the ’90s that will depict what...

"Very clear that there's a contagion effect..." Global Digital Releasing has debuted an official trailer for an indie documentary titled Bullied, the latest doc film made by philosophy professor Dr. Thomas Keith. A really powerful film, Bullied traces bullying and the effects of bullying, but also the methods and programs that have proven efficacious in reducing bullying. This award-winning documentary discusses the reasons for, consequences of, and solutions to bullying taking place in schools, and across social media platforms where cyber-bullying is at an all time high. This looks like a compelling follow-up to the other key bullying doc called, of course, Bully from 2012. Sadly no matter how many films they make and how much they try to confront bullying, it rages on... But hopefully this film sheds some new light on how to deal with and stop it. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Thomas Keith's doc Bullied,...

A new year means a new start. But in its list of new year releases for January 2021, Hulu is sending a message of…eh, we’ll get the year started in February. Not to be overly rude to the usually sturdy streaming service, but there’s not much going on for Hulu in 2021’s first month.
Perhaps the biggest release of note is something that already enjoyed a successful release for ITV in the U.K. The Sister is the lates thriller from Neil Cross (Luther) and it makes its U.S. debut on Hulu on Jan. 22. 2020 comedies Save Yourselves and Like a Boss both arrive on Jan. 1. Hulu original film The Ultimate Playlist of Noise premieres on Jan. 15 and TV series Everyone is Doing Great arrives on Jan. 13.
Thankfully Hulu’s library titles are a bit livelier this month. Jan. 1 sees the arrival of Blade Runner: The Final Cut,...

Hulu is kicking off the new year in style next month, with January set to deliver a ton of fresh titles to the Disney-owned streaming service. There’s a bunch of original content landing throughout the first few weeks of 2021, but probably the highlight is the incredible number of classic movies that are going up on the site on New Year’s Day. Whether you’re in the mood for iconic comedies, dramas, animated efforts or sci-fi flicks, there’s something for you on the way.
There are well over 100 films being added to Hulu’s library on January 1st, so let’s just pick out a few notable titles. The full Austin Powers trilogy is among them, and if you can’t get enough of Mike Myers, the first Shrek likewise becomes available. For dramas, there’s Robert Downey Jr. biopic Chaplin, Johnny Depp vehicle Donnie Brasco and Jim Carrey’s The Truman Show.
