ilicon Valley star Kumail Nanjiani and his wife, Emily V. Gordon, set out to subvert romantic comedy tropes in penning The Big Sick, their semi-autobiographical account of the dramatic first year of their relationship.
Instead of the typical three-step plot, The Big Sick (released by Amazon and Lionsgate) goes more like this: Pakistani-born boy meets white American girl. Boy breaks up with girl over cultural differences. Girl falls into a medical coma.
Nanjiani, 39, who also plays himself in the film, explains how writing such a personal screenplay (now nominated for a Gotham Award) strengthened his and Gordon's marriage...

Nascar champion Jeff Gordon believes that Dale Earnhardt Jr.‘s first child may follow in her family’s speedy footsteps.
“His sister races, I think his niece has raced, so it wouldn’t surprise me,” he told People exclusively during the Angel Ball 2017 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City on Monday night.
Stock car racing champ Earnhardt, 43, and his wife Amy are due in May. Says Gordon, 46, “I actually got to see him the day after he announced it and I saw the excitement so that’s very cool.”

Despite being the poster boy for lonely, brooding superheroes, Batman has one of the biggest supporting casts of sidekicks and allies in comic book history. As The Lego Batman Movie so insightfully pointed out, Bruce Wayne lost his biological family as a boy and so has built up his own surrogate family in adulthood.
But what constitutes a sidekick? For this list, we’re defining the term as any costumed character who routinely acts as Batman’s partner in crime-fighting. Thereby, plain clothes characters who don’t usually help in the field are disqualified – so commiserations to Commissioner Gordon and Alfred Pennyworth. Likewise, the same goes for those Batfamily-related heroes who are more known for operating independently of the Dark Knight, like Terry McGinnis’ Batman, Huntress and Batwoman.
But even with these exclusions, the Caped Crusader still has more sidekicks than batarangs. There’s Jean-Paul Valley (Azrael), Gotham Girl (Claire Clover) and most recently,...

This modern romantic comedy about stand-up comedians generates a genuine warmth about people, the ones-who-need-people kind. Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon’s comic dramatization of the way they became a couple is a big winner, with heart-tugging performances from Nanjiani and Zoe Kazan, and fine characterizations by Holly Hunter, Zenobia Shroff, Ray Romano, and Anupam Kher.

Batman needs no introduction. Created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger in 1939, the Caped Crusader is one of the three members of the Holy Trinity of Comic Book Characters (along with Spider-Man and Superman). His origin is as well-known as he is, having been portrayed many, many times in comic books, television and movies. He is even perhaps more relevant today than ever: he is the central character in Warner Brothers' Dceu movie universe, his comic book is regularly DC's best selling, and a younger version of him is a central character on a Fox television show. We live, so to speak, in a world of Batman, but is that coming to an end? Recent events in the Batman comics have caused many to wonder if Batman is finally looking to retire, hanging up the cape and cowl once and for all.
DC's Batman comic is perhaps its flagship title. During the recent, and abysmal, New 52 series relaunch, Batman -- written by Scott Snyder -- was the only DC comic to consistently wow its audience, adding to the canon along the way. Following the demise of the New 52, Batman was handed over to one of the hottest rising stars in comics, Tom King, and the book has still amazed. During both runs, Snyder and King haven't hesitated to change the status quo. In the last several years for instance, Batman has started a 'bat family' of affiliated superheroes, a new faction of villains known as the Court of Owls reconfigured the Gotham landscape, and Joker cut his own face off. Batman seemingly died, but quickly returned with amnesia, while Commissioner Gordon took over as a mech-driving version of the Dark Knight, albeit temporarily. If this all sounds incredibly silly, it is, but in a way that let readers see Batman in a whole new light and which has transformed the World's Greatest Detective in often subtle, but impactful ways.
Cue The Button and a Spoiler Alert:
This recent four-issue miniseries starred our favorite hero alongside the Flash as they investigated the appearance of a happy face button. If you don't know your comics, it is a reference to perhaps the greatest single book of all time, Watchmen. Without getting into the weeds here, it's the kind of big deal which led Batman and Flash through a multi-dimension-spanning adventure -- and that's where things get interesting.
In one of these dimensions, Batman meets his father. Only in this dimension (stay with me), Thomas Wayne became Batman after *Bruce Wayne* died. Like our own Batman, Thomas Wayne finds it difficult to be happy and, as our Batman leaves, he implores his son-from-another-dimension to give up being Batman. Only a scant few issues later, Bruce Wayne -- our Batman -- does indeed heavily contemplate these words.
It doesn't end there. We catch back up with our hero in Batman #24, and things get even more interesting. In it, Batman admits to his latest protege, a heroine known as Gotham Girl, that he isn't happy being Batman, he just is Batman. He then follows this up with a twist. Batman locates Catwoman, soars across the city skyline for a bit, and then proposes to her.
Taken together, Batman's refusal to answer the bat signal, his unhappiness, and his proposal to Catwoman, it definitely seems like Bruce Wayne is looking for a change in his life. I understand that marriage and a moment of self-reflection don't automatically equate to retirement, but Snyder and King seem to be pushing the idea. Remember earlier when I said that Batman temporarily had amnesia? It took more than just his memory returning to spur him back into the costume. He had to be convinced that Gotham needed him, or face imminent destruction. When Batman meets Gotham Girl, we quickly learn that she has foreseen an end to our favorite hero. In an interview with Newsarama, writer Tom King stated:
"Yeah, this comes from Scott Snyder, who's probably going to kill me for sharing this. But he's one of my best friends, and he gave me this great advice. And he got the advice from Grant Morrison, who said, when you're writing Batman, you know, you're going to have a run on Batman and you have to give him a birth, and you have to give him a death...That's your responsibility as a writer."
Is this a literal death, or the end of the character as we know it? (Heck, with comics, it can be both.) Whatever it is, we know that Batman is not long for this world. Buckle up and enjoy the ride!
What do you think? Is Batman set for retirement? Death? Let us know in the comments down below!

Detective Comics is the longest running American comic book series. It was so important to the publisher, an outfit called National Periodical Publications, that one day they officially changed their name to reflect comic’s initials. They became DC Comics. Oh, sure, Detective Comics Comics doesn’t make sense, but let’s not split hairs and just chalk it all up to simpler times.
I’ve been reading Detective Comics for as long as I’ve been reading. Batman was the lead character since #27, 1939, and in the early days I admit I’d often choose the latest issue of Batman – with that big Batman logo – instead of the latest Detective Comics.
But then, right about the time that I was actively buying and reading comics on my own with minimal parental supervision, Detective Comics shifted direction. Batman’s superhero adventures morphed into detective and mystery stories. Many stories embraced a whodunit feel.

Big spoilers lie ahead for Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice
Whichever side of the imaginary rivalry you fall into, there's no denying that when it comes to movies, DC has got some catching up to do. In the same year as Marvel Studios released their first major crossover, The Avengers, Warner Bros released The Dark Knight Rises, the final chapter in Christopher Nolan's acclaimed Batman trilogy, which was firmly grounded in the notion that Bruce Wayne is the world's only superhero.
Nolan's disinterest in the larger DC toybox left Warners a few steps behind Disney and Marvel, especially after the failure of 2010's Jonah Hex and 2011's Green Lantern, the latter of which was intended as the first step into a wider universe.

Two words could be used to describe comics in 2015: scandal and rebirth. The scandals happened off the pages at both companies large and small, and the rebirth happened in the comics themselves.
Graphic Policy reported that former Dark Horse Comics editor-in-chief Scott Allie bit writer Joe Harris (X-Files Season Ten) at the Boom! Studios party at San Diego Comic Con, and he was demoted to “executive editor” even though an assault of this kind would be grounds for dismissal at almost any other company. There was also another ethical breach at Dark Horse when The Rainbow Hub journalist Emma Houxbois reported that former Bleeding Cool editor Hanna Means-Shannon broke a Dark Horse-related story while it was under embargo and didn’t disclose the fact that she was taking a job with the company.

Watching a film by Olivier Assayas is a little like wandering into the bedroom of a teenager, taking in the aesthetic décor that clings to his or her walls and bookshelves—posters, pop records, hastily cut-out collages of idols, and literature—and being left to draw a logical conclusion based on these ephemeral scraps. This idea of collage, assembling or reinventing an identity, has always been a concept inherent to punk and youth culture: British punk historian Jon Savage coined the term “living collage” to describe European teenagers in the 1970s who tore apart thrifted vintage clothing at the seams to fuse and repurpose them with safety pins. Assayas’ work is essentially the filmic equivalent of that same idea: he populates his frames with torrents of ideas and surfaces and lets loose cinematographers Yorick Le Saux and Eric Gautier to pan wildly, struggling to encapsulate everything into their widescreen, handheld compositions.

Sorry, but I'm still annoyed that we sent Sarina-Joi Crowe packing. It's not that she didn't, at least on some level, deserve to go. She gave a bad performance at the beginning of a long episode, which is an easy path to being forgotten and being eliminated. Still, "American Idol" lost a singer with almost limitless upside and we kept at least four or five people who almost certainly will never have anywhere near Sarina-Joi's potential. Oh well. After dedicating Wednesday night to two ridiculously high-rated hours of "Empire," Fox is turning Thursday over for a sure-to-be-lower-rated two hours of "American Idol" with a Movie Night theme. This is always one of the show's fuzziest and least justifiable themes and tonight we're using the theme as a hook so that Jennifer Lopez can perform the song she has in an upcoming movie. Click through and follow along! 8:00 p.m.

Chicago – Kim Gordon was part of a rock revolution in the 1980s and ‘90s, as part of the sound called Sonic Youth. She has written a memoir about those days, “Girl in a Band,” and promoted that book through an appearance sponsored by the Chicago Humanities Festival on February 26th, 2015, at the historic Music Box Theatre in Chicago.
Gordon grew up in Los Angeles, and moved to New York City in the late 1970s to pursue an art career. She was fascinated by the punk and new wave movement in the city, and formed her first band, through which she met Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore. In 1981, the trio formed Sonic Youth. Throughout the 1980s and ‘90s, the band’s sound was influential in the era, with albums like “Evol” and “Sister.” Over the years, Kim Gordon has participated in other musical projects, and produced the album “Pretty on the...

Is Lana Del Rey a feminist? It’s a question that’s been asked before to differing opinions. But, if you ask Kim Gordon, the answer is very simple: no. In Gordon’s upcoming memoir, Girl in a Band, she takes aim at Del Rey, specifically a comment she made to Fader in an interview last year. In that piece, she calls feminism “just not an interesting concept.” “I’m more interested in, you know, SpaceX and Tesla, what’s going to happen with our intergalactic possibilities,” Del Rey said. “Whenever people bring up feminism, I’m like, god. I’m just not really that interested.” It should be said, Del Rey does say a true feminist, to her, is “a woman who feels free enough to do whatever she wants.” Even still, Gordon has a bit of a problem with that, writing in her book, “Today we have someone like Lana Del Rey,...

Film ‘Jupiter Ascending’ rises to absurd and hilarious heights
That sound you’re hearing is a massive sigh of relief from David Lynch. He no longer holds the dubious distinction of producing the most expensive B-movie in the history of Hollywood. That honor now belongs to The Wachowskis, whose Jupiter Ascending has officially displacedDune at the top (or bottom) of the heap. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, however. Jupiter Ascending not only looks spectacular, it’s a laugh riot. Ridiculous dialogue, hammy performances, and enough mythology to baffle Zeus make this disaster a must-see for all lovers of cheese… read the full article.
The Conversation: Drew Morton and Landon Palmer Discuss ‘The Killing’
Stanley Kubrick’s The Killing (1956) is not my favorite work by the visionary director. In fact, the film probably wouldn’t even make it onto a list of my top five Kubrick films. Yet, with...

This is, to put it plainly, one hell of a time to be a comic book nerd. All my favorite characters(*) are making the leap from the page to either the big or small screen. Marvel can seemingly do no wrong with its film output, turning an obscure and downright goofy property like "Guardians of the Galaxy" into one of the year's biggest and most beloved hits. TV's most popular comedy ("Big Bang Theory") has a comic book shop as one of its primary sets, and a main character often seen in Flash and Green Lantern t-shirts. TV's most popular drama series ("The Walking Dead") is based on a long-running comic book, and there are currently five other comic-based shows airing on the broadcast networks (ABC's "Marvel's Agents of Shield," Fox's "Gotham," NBC's "Constantine" and the CW's "Arrow" and "The Flash"), with more coming fast. (The CW has "iZombie" set for mid-season,...

Do you have room on your DVR for another TV drama? Better make sure, because "Gotham" is looking more and more like must-see TV.
This UK teaser for "Gotham," which assures concerned Brits that they too will be able to see just how James Gordon got his start, gives us a good look at the characters populating this mythical city, from a young Bruce Wayne and baby Ivy to Catwoman and the Penguin. Part of the fun of "Gotham" will be seeing these heroes and villains in their nascent forms, as well as sussing out who's who. For instance, that young blonde lurking in the shadows? That's Sara Paxton, and rumor has it her character is Bette Kane. Bat-Girl was originally known as Betty Kane, but eventually she came to be known as Bette. Is Gotham getting a dose of Bat-Girl power? We hope so!

Comings (24?) and goings (Bones?) were the hot topics as Fox Networks Group Chairman and CEO Peter Rice took the stage at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, ahead of Dana Walden and Gary Newman officially seizing the reins later this month.
Related Fox’s Fall Premiere Plan Includes Family Guy/Simpsons Crossover, 3-Part Utopia Launch, Late Mulaney Start
Following 24‘s successful and recently wrapped revival — which premiered to numbers larger than many of the action-drama’s previous openers — Rice seems to think there’s a good chance we’ll see another edition down the line.
“I loved this year’s season of 24,” he said.

At last, a show with the courage to ask the big question: Can man invent a laptop computer?
Alright, maybe that's stacking the deck against Halt and Catch Fire's third episode, "High Plains Hardware." We knew it was historical(ish) fiction from the start, and acting as though foregone conclusions about the future of computers are matters of high suspense, well… that's just basic good faith on the part of the audience, right?

"The "Bat-Man", a mysterious and adventurous figure, fighting for righteousness and apprehending the wrong doer, in his lone battle against the evil forces of society... His identity remains unknown."
Those exciting words started off a story in Detective Comics Issue number 27 in May of 1939, and the world was introduced to one of the most well-known and most recognized superheroes - The Bat-Man, as he was first called. National Comics (now DC Comics) was enjoying comic sales due to Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel's latest creation, Superman, and they were in the market for another caped crusader. Created by Bob Kane, he was little more than crude sketches until Bill Finger gave some suggestions that would make him iconic: The bat cowl, the color of the costume (Kane originally planned on having Batman wear a red union suit with black trunks and cape), and putting gloves on the hero.

Fox premiered the first full length trailer for their fall series Gotham Monday night during the 2-hour premiere of 24: Live Another Day, and announced that the Batman prequel show has officially been picked up by the network.
First Trailer For Fox's 'Gotham'
Ben McKenzie (The Oc, Southland) stars in Gotham as a young detective James Gordon, who struggles to rid Gotham of criminals. Gordon was played by Gary Oldman in the beloved Dark Knight series, and while Gotham still takes place in the Batman universe, Bruce Wayne/Batman is 12 years old when the series begins. Based on the trailer, the series will chronicle the first meeting between Gordon and the young boy after his parents are killed.
Gotham also stars Donal Logue as Gordon’s partner, Detective Harvey Bullock and Jada Pinkett Smith as Fish Mooney. The show also won’t be shy when it comes to portraying classic Batman characters.

Meanwhile, an insider told press that the Beckhams will spend Christmas Day with Gordon Ramsay and his family while Ramsay’s staff handles all the cooking.
"It will be a very traditional Gordon Ramsay Christmas. Victoria sees this as her one true day off, and because they’re going to Gordon’s she doesn’t have to do a thing. Vic likes to really relax at Christmas, so she isn’t even planning to dress up. She’ll tuck into a full Christmas roast, including potatoes and other calorific treats. Five Star Billionaire by Tash Aw (Fourth Estate) is a brilliant, sprawling, layered and unsentimental portrayal of contemporary China. It made me think and laugh. I also love Dave Eggers' The Circle (Hamish Hamilton), which is a sharp-eyed and funny satire about the obsession with "sharing" our lives through technology. It's convincing and a little creepy.
William Boyd
By strange coincidence two of the most intriguing art books I read this year had the word "Breakfast" in their titles. They were Breakfast with Lucian by Geordie Greig (Jonathan Cape) and Breakfast at Sotheby's by Philip Hook (Particular). Greig's fascinating, intimate biography of Lucian Freud was a revelation. Every question I had about Freud – from the aesthetic to the intrusively gossipy – was...

Memphis, Tenn. — It was 1973, and Elvis Presley's comeback was in fifth gear.
After years of making mediocre movies, he had returned to touring and performing in Las Vegas. In January of that year, he staged the "Aloha from Hawaii" concert live via satellite, viewed by a billion people worldwide.
But, due to a contractual obligation, he also needed to create new material. He and manager Col. Tom Parker decided that Presley's beloved Memphis was the place to do it.
The result was two recording sessions at Stax Records, the influential studio where Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Sam & Dave and others created the "Memphis soul" sound in the 1960s and early 1970s.
Presley's sessions in July and December 1973 produced country, R&B and pop songs that were released in three separate albums.
Forty years after Presley's Stax sessions, RCA Legacy is releasing the three-cd box set "Elvis at Stax: Deluxe Edition" on Tuesday.

Thank God for HD, right? (I don’t care what any of the judges say. These still look amazing.)
It’s all about the final Pressure Test on MasterChef. Last week’s lemon meringue pie did Bimi in, and this week two home chefs had to enter a sweat-streaked macaroon War Zone to fight for their places in summer’s hottest competition of who can stir up the most sh*t cook random stuff the best. Who would ultimately fall apart easier than his own confection?

In October of last year, right around the time the show Arrow had premiered, I quit my job to become a full time missionary. My fiancé was going to school for missionary work as well. At Christmas time of that year, we both received a well-deserved break. We are both huge nerds, just in different aspects of the term – whatever the case, both of us love the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies.
Right around the time of our break last year, the third entry in the series (Dog Days) had just come out on Blu-Ray and DVD, so of course we rented it to see it was as good as the first two films. I remember one scene in particular where Greg convinces Rowley to ride the Cranium Scrambler: when they first attempted to get on the ride, the wait time was 80 minutes. They are supposed to meet up...

Sometimes, it’s great to just spend an evening at the movies. A friend of mine and I decided that we both wanted to see The Possession and Premium Rush and discovered, much to our chagrin, that Premium Rush had exactly one showtime to go to. The Possession had two. So, we made the plan and we decided that we would just spend the whole evening at the movie theater.
This same friend and I had, much to the amusement of our other friends, gone to see a midnight showing of “The Mothman Prophecies” shortly after it started showing. We had confidently declared, “How scary can it be? It’s got Richard Gere in it!” Once the movie was finished, we realized with some alarm that we were going to have to walk back home in the dark. It was agreed that she would watch the sidewalk in front of...

Like yesterday's round of "Dark Knight Rises" reading, today's edition dives heavily into spoiler territory — specifically about Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character, Detective John Blake. Proceed with extreme caution!
So, the rumors of Gordon-Levitt's character in "Rises" being Robin have finally proven themselves to be true! More or less. But John Blake was far from the first Robin to aid the Dark Knight in his time of need. In fact, in the comic books, there have already been five Robins to date since the Boy Wonder's first appearance in 1940.
Starting with Dick Grayson, an 8 year old acrobat, and then passing on to Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, and Damian Wayne (in that order — and that's not even mentioning out-of-continuity Robins like Carrie Kelley), each Robin has acted as a loyal partner, apprentice, and friend to Batman throughout the years. One could even argue that if it weren't for his trusty sidekick,...

As with any great comic book movie, Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises" features its fair share of throwbacks to its over 70 years of source material. From overt reflections of iconic moments to the subtler winks-and-nods aimed at deep-cut fans, "Rises" is sure to please the viewers who have had their noses buried in Batman books all their lives.
Here are five of our favorite "Dark Knight Rises" comic book callouts. Major Spoilers after the break! Do not proceed without having seen "Rises" first!
Every Girl Loves Her Pearls But Diamonds Are Forever
Selina Kyle makes her first appearance in "Rises" posing as a maid working at Wayne Manor. (Indeed, her first scenes offer viewers a glimpse at the "Dark Knight" spinoff that never was, "Downton Batman.") Her mission is to glean Bruce's fingerprints from a safe, but along the way, she pauses to steal the late Martha Wayne's iconic pearl necklace.

Few genres of film inspire more personal responses than the romantic comedy. Given how much of our lives is spent on love and romance (falling into it, falling out of it, chasing it, giving up on it), it's no surprise that the rom-com has remained one of the most popular formulas since the dawn of cinema, and while the genre has undisputed classics, you can end up cherishing certain films purely because of their connection to your own life. They can help pull you out of a post break-up tailspin, they can comfort you through unrequited love, and, if a film hits you at the height of your passion for someone, they can end up associated forever, even blinding you to the movie's flaws -- seeing "Elizabethtown" in the midst of first love left this writer swooning after exiting the theater (thankfully, a subsequent rewatch put me straight as to how terrible it is.

Dead werewolf Debbie Pelt's parents arrive & more in this new set of True Blood season 5 spoilers. According to Trueblood-news,a couple new spoilers have arrived, again, from the set of the season 5 set in the form of casting notices. Two of them really stood out, because dead Debbie's parents are going to show up,looking for her, because they don't yet know that she got her fuckin brains blown out by Sookie. I can't wait to see their reaction. These spoilers are for episode 3,titled, "Whatever I Am, You Made Me." First up, we have Lindsey, who is In her 20s, attractive in a small town kind of way. She'll be fixing a flat tire in a narrow country road, when a vampire comes upon her. Molly is In her 20s, bubbly, with a retro Bettie Page/Suicide Girl vibe, cute as a button if buttons had fangs. She will...

It's just about that time of year - Girl Scout cookie time. And while we're sure you will be buying boxes of Thin Mints and Caramel Delights, don't forget to leave room for the newest Girl Scout Cookie - Savannah Smiles. A new cookie is being introduced in honor of it being the 100th anniversary of Girl Scout cookies.
The Girl Scouts blog says of the cookie, "This year's new cookie, "Savannah Smiles," is a cool and crisp lemon wedge cookie. It's name reflects the home of Girl Scout Founder Juliette Gordon Low."
Low, born Juliette Magill Kinzie Gordon before she became Juliette Gordon Low upon marrying William Low in 1886, was born in Savannah, Georgia in 1860. She founded the "Girl Guides" in 1912, which were then changed to the familiar "Girl Scouts" we know today. Low died of cancer in 1923 and was buried in Savannah in her Girl Scout uniform.

The shortlist for Britain's National Television Awards is out, and it will pit Downton Abbey against Doctor Who for the top prize, though Downton inexplicably received no nominations for the cast. They face off against Merlin and Waterloo Road. Interestingly, John Barrowman and Eve Myles both got nominations for what to me at least was a very forgettable Torchwood.
