As little as the country of Denmark is, it has an over-proportional share of interesting movie-making.
I watched "Bleeder" this afternoon, and after some while decided to re-watch Mirakel. As different as they are, there is also quite something common, which for lack of deeper analysis I for now call the Danish factor.
Even on second sight, Mirakel's exposition of 12-year-old Dennis P. had lots of charms for me. Of course, the wishing business is known from various fairy tales, and the angel stuff feels almost like a Hollywood production, let's say "Dennis Almighty".
Almost. The song and dance numbers with all their unreality (teacher in classroom, mothers shopping, the church scene) resembled more the regular Indian productions. And still, this film as much as Bleeder feels quite grounded on real life in Denmark. (Having the Danish soundtrack, and understanding at least some of it, helps of course.) 40 years ago, I was a 12-year old boy too, and I could empathize quite much with Dennis' troubles. The denouement seems a bit rushed, what with a single pubic hair growing, and Jule as new kid on the block...
Still, a good experience after repeated viewing. If you want a stronger Danish treatment of pre-teen boy angst, see also Terkel i knibe :)
