The only major studio franchise to rival the beleaguered Dceu for most troubled production has to be Universal’s Dark Universe. Conceived of as a shared cinematic universe comprised of all of Universal’s classic monster movie franchises – from Dracula to Frankenstein – it has floundered in developmental Hell for years, has been quietly rebooted and bombed spectacularly (twice!) before finding a modestly receptive audience overseas. It’s easy to forget, given just how few people cared for it upon release, but it was actually Dracula Untold – way back in 2014 – that was supposed to kick off the action-horror mega-franchise:

As a film studio, Sony has been struggling to turn a profit for years. They make good movies – they really do – but nothing they try seems to translates into butts in seats at the local multiplex. First they tried to reboot the Spider-Man movies, which saw nose-diving returns severe enough to force them to cancel their entire planned cinematic universe around the character. Although funnier than most comedies, last year’s Ghostbusters remake failed to capture an audience in theaters. And in 2017, they’re continuing to hemorrhage money at an alarming rate. Although actually up from the same period

As hard as it may be (for some of us) to get our heads around the idea of a '90s period piece, "Fresh Off the Boat" is exactly that — and then some. Taking place during the childhood of its central character Eddie Huang (who wrote the memoir on which the show is loosely and controversially based), the Orlando-set sitcom often infuses many nostalgic favorites from the time period. From roller-blading to original hip hop, the series is steeped in cultural references; enough that it's easy to forget the show is a cultural reference in itself. Read More: Why Broadcast Comedies Dominate While Dramas Are Dead in the Water Think back to the popular family sitcoms of the '90s: "Everybody Loves Raymond," "Married…With Children," "Home Improvement," "The King of Queens." While all of these certainly have their highlights, remembering an episode where the "mom" character is more than...

The future may be a pretty bleak place to live in "Divergent," but at least there's plenty of good music to dance to. The soundtrack for the upcoming sci-fi film has been revealed, and will feature the likes of Chance the Rapper, Skrillex, A$AP Rocky, M83, Zedd, and more. It also includes a number of tracks from Ellie Goulding, whose voice is also featured in the film's score. Among the new songs on the album is a collaboration between Aussie rockers Tame Impala and L.A. rapper Kendrick Lamar. There will be a special edition featuring three bonus tracks (including another by Goulding) available exclusively at Target. "Divergent" takes place in a future dystopia where people are separated into groups based on their personality. Directed by Neal Burger ("Limitless"), it stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Kate Winslet and Maggie Q. 1. “Find You” – Zedd feat. Matthew Koma & Miriam Bryant 2. “Beating...

The first exclusive clip from the much-anticipated dystopian thriller Divergent is now online to give fans of Veronica Roth’s young adult series something to tide them over through the holidays. It’s a rather gooey romantic moment, in sharp contrast to the film’s gritty, action-heavy trailers, but they’ve got to start sucking in those hormone-raging teens somehow, right?
The clip is of the book’s notable tattoo scene, when Four (Theo James) shows off the ink of the five factions on his back to Tris (Shailene Woodley). Tris is divergent, meaning that she does not belong to just one of the factions, which she keeps a secret. If people find out that she is divergent, Tris risks her own execution. When Four shows Tris the tattoos, he stands in solidarity with her multi-faction identity. Unable to resist his empathy toward her plight (as well as his shirtlessness...

‘Divergent’ movie clip: Theo James shows ‘it’ to ‘Amazed’ Shailene Woodley "Do you want to see it?" Theo James’ Four asks Shailene Woodley’s Tris Prior before removing one of his garments in this new Divergent movie clip. "That’s amazing!" she tells him. (Photo: Shailene Woodley and Theo James in Divergent movie.) No, it’s not what you’re thinking. The "it" in question is a enormous tattoo that covers nearly all of Theo James’ back. That is what Shailene Woodley finds amazing. All the while, Ellie Goulding’s "Dead in the Water" plays in the background — I take that back, the song is actually heard in the foreground, as it’s about as loud as the dialogue between James and Woodley. See and hear the Divergent clip below. ‘Divergent’: ‘Thrilling action-adventure’ You wouldn’t be able to tell by looking at the soap opera-like clip, but Divergent...

A new clip from "Divergent," the first book in Veronica Roth's Ya series, shows off the simmering chemistry between Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James), giving audiences some context for what turns out to be their first kiss.
Soundtracked by the Ellie Goulding tune "Dead in the Water," Tris asks to see Four's tattoo, the mark of members of the Dauntless faction that Tris has just joined. While her tattoo is small, Four's covers his whole back, and features the symbols of the rest of the factions in their world.
"I don't want to be just one thing," Four explains as Tris touches the ink, tracing each shape and no doubt sending tingles down his spine.
The rest of the scene is pretty self-explanatory, and should leave fangirls' and -guys' hearts pounding.
"Divergent" opens on March 21, 2014.

In case one year between “The Hunger Games” movies is too much for you, perhaps this upcoming film can help to appease your appetite. “Divergent” stars Shailene Woodley and a brand new clip from the film has just been released, which is certainly not meant to attract a specific demographic. No, not at all. As Ellie Goulding's "Dead In The Water" fills the background, Beatrice Prior (Woodley) gets a nice look at Tobias Eaton’s (Theo James) elaborate tattoo design. It’s the tattoo design, and only the tattoo, that is impressive here. Nothing else. In “Divergent,” people are divided into five different factions based on their personalities. Beatrice, however, is a Divergent which means she does not fit into any one faction and she soon discovers that there is a plot to exterminate her kind so that an authoritarian leader can seize control over their divided society. Tobias...

In honor of the release of Christopher Golden's Joe Golem and the Drowning City in limited edition hardcover on October 3 and Baltimore: The Play, his collaboration with Mike Mignola, on November 21, Dark Horse editor Scott Allie interviewed the award-winning author for us.
Topics covered in the interview include Golden's interpretation of the term "dark fantasy," his upcoming project with True Blood author Charlaine Harris, vampires in our current culture, his influences, the scariest thing he's written, and Lots more. Check it out below, and look for more guest blogs from Scott Allie over the coming weeks.
Scott Allie: Can you explain “dark fantasy” to me?
Christopher Golden: The easy approach would be to say it's a merger of horror and fantasy, but that's not always true. For me, dark fantasy is fantasy in which nasty things happen. For people who've read my original novels, dark fantasy would be easy to recognize.

Indonesia, 2011, imdb
For the martial arts aficianados out there, don’t even bother reading this review, just go to the theatre now. The Raid: Redemption is everything that you have heard it is and more. Many of the fights are done with one or both fighters holding knives, but if anything they fight faster with knives than with empty hands.

The episode before mid-season hiatus ended with one hell of a cliffhanger, leaving our beloved Bobby holding on to life by a thread, with an irritatingly persistent reaper offering him two equally unappealing choices: pass on, or hang around to eventually become an angry spirit, the likes of which he's spent his life hunting.
The show deliberately avoided revealing which option he chose, opening instead with Sam and Dean in the weeks following their father-figure's death. We don't know whether Bobby was buried or cremated, or whether he's potentially brain-dead but being kept alive by machines following his last flat-line, and that ambiguity obviously leaves room for Bobby's return, either in ghost or comatose form,...

Note - This recap was written in season 6, but I don't think there are any spoilers. Maybe a slight hint or two.
Previously: Mary and Jessica died, John sucked, and the brothers road tripped. Welcome to Supernatural, round 2.
In the middle of the woods, the guy from Glee plays a video game. Nice to know it's all about nature. I'd hum Don't Stop Believing, but he screams monster fodder. He's camping; we all know how this turns out. A monster growls in the background while another camper leaves a status report for Haley. I thought it was his girlfriend originally. The third camper stops his video game losing streak to go to the bathroom, which in Spn means first one to go..er..die. He gets spooked by a branch breaking and I get spooked by monster sounds. Hence the screaming starts. Gary (Glee guy) checks out what happened to...

In the face of rising Android handset sales, some commentators are suggesting Apple's iPhone is soon doomed to become a mere footnote in the development of smartphone tech. But for a number of reasons, Apple's phone is most definitely "not dead yet!"
A weekend post in Business Insider carried news of Comscore's latest sales figures for the U.S. smartphone market. Noting the soaring sales of Android handsets, the post bore the headline "Android is Destroying Everyone, Especially Rim--iPhone Dead in the Water." Comscore's statistics could easily lead one to agree with that one conclusion...except for three or four important facts.
First, the headline is statistically misleading. Back in March Steve Jobs revealed Apple had sold over 100 million iPhones worldwide. Comscore's data does actually show a small rise in U.S. market share for the iPhone between November 2010 and February 2011--from 25% to 25.2%, but since the actual U.S. smartphone market itself is growing,...

Note - I wrote this during season 6. So many things have changed about Spn - the plot, characters, focus. The music (sadly). One thing has not. I liked Supernatural from the pilot, obsessed over it from Dead in the Water, and it is still my favorite show on TV. No other show grips me so completely in the plight of its characters. Thanks Supernatural cast and crew for being can't miss TV for 6 years. I look forward to spending a seventh season still enthralled by you.
Oh, and it's impossible for me to separate 6 years of Supernatural destiny at this time, so hints are bound to creep in. Plus, I'm watching this on iTunes with their crummy new soundtrack so I can't talk about all the great music either. Trust me, get the DVD's. They are well worth it if only for the music alone.

Dead in the water? Not quite. Last-minute negotiations to reanimate an adaptation of Max Brooks's zombie novel are proving quite fruitful, according to sources. With Paramount threatening to cut the rope without a financing partner, all hope on a World War Z film had seemingly been quashed. But today word reaches us that talks are being carried out with a few interested prospectors, with rumours of production beginning as early as June. If it gets the green light (and we hope it does), Quantum of Solace director Mark Forster will...

Breaking: Zach Galifianakis is much funnier than Miley Cyrus. Nice recovery, SNL. The Hangover star returned to Studio 8H for a second hosting stint last night, gifting us with plenty of fine characters and skits. He also burdened us with the most cliched final sketch in recent memory, and that’s something of an accomplishment. Prepare to cross your eyes and whine like musical guest Jessie J!

Deadline broke news this morning that Kevin Williamson, one of the masterminds behind The CW's The Vampire Diaries, will work his magic on another classic L.J. Smith book series, 'The Secret Circle,' which is in contention for a pilot and a slot on The CW's fall schedule. The pilot was announced in the latter part of last year with current Tvd writers (and famous writing duo) Elizabeth Craft & Sarah Fain attached as executive producers for the show. Craft and Fain are known to TV fans as some of the creative talent behind Joss Whedon staples Angel and Dollhouse, while also tackling procedural dramas such as The Shield and Lie To Me.
Williamson will come on board as an executive producer and write the script for the pilot, which revolves around a California teen named Cassie,...

Something pulls a girl under whilst she's swimming in the lake. Alluding to the title of this episode, Dead in the Water in two senses: firstly, that whoever got killed was dead in the water (not so funny) or secondly, whatever or whoever did it, was dead in the water. No reference to boats/ ships here, as that's what the title more commonly refers to. Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles), in a diner for the first time, and we see how much Dean just loves his food and witness his idea of 'fun'. "You know Sam, we are allowed to have fun once in a while - that's fun." Ugh and we thought it was something completely different, naively, ha. Gotta love the way Dean has this whole new spin on words and vocabulary too. Dean comes across the article in the paper and they head to Lake Manitoc,...

Previously - it was all about Sam (Sam's appearance meant Lisa's end, Sam has no soul, Cas can't get Sam's soul back, Sam has no instinct, Sam isn't Dean's brother anymore, Sam doesn't care)
Two kids are making out in a cornfield and you know this ends badly. Haven't they seen Children of the Corn? Go park by an abandoned barn or the creek like everyone else. SuperJock sees something and goes into the corn to "have a quick look". This reminds me of Asylum when Dean said, "You seen a lot of horror movies, yeah?...Do me a favor, next time you see one, pay attention. When someone says a place is haunted, don't go in." Same thing applies to exploring cornfields, SuperJock. I thought Blondie was the smarter of the two, but she follows SuperJock in, because you know that always ends well. In a flash of light,...

'Supernatural' is one of those shows I've been hearing about since it first premiered in 2005. I was never a fan of shows with demons and ghosts and the like until I finally watched 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer.' Now I'm sort of hooked on them.
I'm not gonna lie, though. I'm just a few episodes into 'Supernatural,' and so far, it's terrifying. It could be a good long while before I'm able to swim in a lake ('Dead in the Water'), go camping ('Wendigo'), fly on a plane ('Phantom Traveler'), or look in a mirror ('Bloody Mary'). And I'm convinced that my husband is probably a shape-shifter ('Skin').

Drac Studios is gearing up for a busy 2010. The FX shop behind Watchmen , The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Trailer Park of Terror has a number of projects hitting the screen, hopefully, this year including the creature bonanzas Night of the Demons and Dead of Night . Their upcoming slate doesn't stop there, however. Drac's Todd Tucker tells us there are a number of films they're in pre-production on. "There's a shark film, there's another one that's a cat person sort of film, then there's an alien movie. A lot of creature-heavy stuff." That shark film is Dead in the Water , directed by Rob Walker and written by Si Dunn. "Right now we're looking at only doing the FX," Tucker says. "They asked us to produce, but we haven't signed...

On the list of filmmakers who've made the transition from special effects to producing and directing live-action, you can now add the name Drac Studios. The FX and makeup company has won Oscars for a number of films, including Bram Stoker's Dracula (pictured above), and it will now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, create a live-action feature entirely in house, by opening up Drac Studios Louisiana and going into preproduction on Dead in the Water. Read more after the jump. "Si Dunn wrote the script," reports the trade journal, "which will be directed by Rob Walker and produced by Drac president Harvey Lowry." Lowry just completed production, with Todd...

Oscar-winning special effects and makeup house Drac Studios has opened up a production arm, Drac Studios Louisiana, and announced its first live-action feature, Dead in the Water. For the time being Drac is leasing space in Baton Rouge's Raleigh Studios Celtic Media Center.
According to The Hollywood Reporter Dead in the Water was written by Si Dunn and will be directed by Rob Walker with production being headed up by Drac president Harvey Lowry.
No plot details were made available, but taking into account Drac's track record of working on genre projects and the film's title, we figured it was safe to assume horror will be involved in one form or another. As for why they selected this location, Lowry said, "With all of the indie and studio films being shot in Louisiana, it was an easy decision to open a facility in the state. Now we can offer other...

Back in October, we chatted with Drac Studios Todd Tucker and Harvey Lowry at Spike TV's Scream Awards where they were just about wrapping production on Monster Mutt , a family fantasy film that Tucker directed. They were also just beginning production on The Mortician with Gareth Maxwell Roberts helming. The plot for "Left 4 Dead 2" may still be shrouded in mystery, but the game's list of Achievements names both items and stages in the order they appear. Merely surviving will go a long way toward point accumulation, but the accomplishments contain a few fancy tricks as well. Defibrillators appear to be involved, likely as a means to heal party members. Also mentioned are "bile bombs," which will score you an Achievement when used against a tank. Check out the whole rundown and a very special clown-based Achievement after the jump.

Los Angeles-based DEJ Prods., the film acquisition and distribution subsidiary of video rental giant Blockbuster, said Tuesday that it is expanding its operations in the United Kingdom. Beginning in December, all 699 Blockbuster U.K. stores will carry three DEJ titles as part of a rollout that will increase to 20-30 releases annually here. Separately, Blockbuster U.K. said that it has acquired U.K. computer and console games retailer Gamestation for an undisclosed price. DEJ said it has appointed U.K. independent video distributor High Fliers to handle sales of Federal Protection, with Armand Assante; Stick Up, with James Spader; and Dead in the Water, with Dominique Swain and Henry Thomas to the rest of the U.K. rental and sell-through markets.
