Leading Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou has a tough guy exterior – leather jackets, black shirts and a square jaw that has earned him acting awards alongside his top-level credentials as cinematographer and director of “Hero,” “The Road Home” – but on a visit to the Tokyo International Film Festival this week he was all smiles and frank talk.
Zhang received a lifetime achievement award on Monday. On Tuesday the festival gave a gala screening to his historical blockbuster “Full River Red.” And at a Wednesday masterclass, Zhang was more gushed usable details about his process and frank advice for newcomers.
“To be a film director you need to be physically in good shape. No smoking and no drinking,” he advised.

“That is,” he continued, “people now value a peaceful and healthy life even more.”
Zhang, one of China’s most enduring filmmakers, is in Tokyo to receive the festival’s honorary lifetime achievement award. He picked up the gong Monday at the TIFF opening ceremony held at Tokyo’s Takarazuka Theatre.
“This is like a new start for me,” Zhang said, accepting the award. He added that he has traveled to the Tokyo Film Festival twice before, but the lifetime achievement award felt like the spark of a new chapter in his career. But with what Zhang described as a dramatic change in the mentality of audiences, has his approach to filmmaking changed?...

This Babylon 5 article contains spoilers.
Like Billy Pilgrim before him, John Sheridan has become unstuck in time. Again!
On May 13, 1996, Babylon 5 aired the first part of a two-parter epic called “War Without End.” In it, the crew of the White Star are tasked with stealing the space station Babylon 4 and sending it back in time 1,000 years to defeat the Shadows in a previous war, all so the Shadows are weaker in the present. But, if they fail, another, much darker parallel universe will unfold. And while we’ve only seen glimpses of that universe before, in the new Babylon 5 animated movie, The Road Home, this specific alternate timeline is explored in a way that calls back not just to “War Without End,” but to the season 1 banger, “Babylon Squared,” too.

Sequoia Entertainment is taking advantage of Taiwan’s gay-friendly culture to launch urban comedy series “The Nipple Talk.” The show is in pre-production and is expected to be delivered by early 2023.
Taiwan, which is self-ruled and democratic, has a more liberal culture than other parts of Greater China. In 2019, Taiwan legalized same sex marriage and is now more actively producing queer content than Hong Kong or mainland China. The island is now one of the main sources of Bl (or ‘boys love’) series, bromance drama shows that have a strong following among female-skewing audiences in the region.
Sequoia bills “The Nipple Talk” as a tribute to classic U.S. series “Sex and The City” but with more open LGBTQ elements and full nudity – a rarity in Asia outside the porn industry. The producer says that it will incorporate themes such as podcasting and influencers, that matter to young adult audiences.

Although America has the largest film industry, and the most successful in terms of revenue, the Chinese film industry has created a string of releases that have fared well overseas in recent years. A surge of Chinese films, including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero and Kung Fu Hustle, have received rave reviews and rated high at the box office in the West as well as in their native country. Directors such as Zhang Yimou and Ang Lee and actresses Gong Li and Zhang Ziyi have also gone on to become big names.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Ang Lee’s 2000 film was the first foreign language film to take over $100million in the US and holds the record for the most Oscar nominations for a foreign film. Nominated for ten awards, it took home four on the night, including Best Foreign Film. It also won dozens of awards in its home country,...

Today, Zhang Ziyi is well known as a superb actress, in and out of China. Amongst other achievements, she has won 12 different Best Actress awards to become the most awarded Chinese actress for a single film, “The Grandmaster”. However, even a highly acclaimed performer had to begin somewhere, and what could be a better way than a film directed by Zhang Yimou, one known to debut wonderful performers. Her very first film is “The Road Home”, Zhang’s last film released in the 20th century.
The movie begins in a black-and-white setting in contemporary China. Luo Yusheng, prompted by the death of his father, returns to his village to check on her grieving mother. Upon reaching the city, he is visited by two village men, one of them being the mayor. They tell him of his mother’s strange request: that his father’s coffin should be...

Whatever you think of his checkered oeuvre, Zhang Yimou is undeniably a maestro of modern Chinese cinema. Few could match the international acclaim or box office success earned by the 66-year-old director, whose artistic path mirrors the breathtaking steps made in Chinese history and film industry. While his early works helped catapult Chinese cinema to the global festival spotlight, his middle phase led the way in commercial blockbusters with Chinese characteristics.

To paraphrase “Ratatouille,” not everyone can act, but a great actor can come from anywhere. The beautiful thing about the movies is that they so often do.
Screen debuts can have such an impact precisely because audiences don’t know these people. We haven’t read about them in the tabloids or seen them in other roles. The best inaugural performances bristle with the rush of witnessing raw potential, of being introduced to something incredible before the world has decided what it is yet. A great debut can make you feel like you’re witness to a happening, or getting in on the ground floor of an investment — watching John Boyega defy an alien invasion in “Attack the Block,” it was immediately clear that learning his name was going to pay off.

Joe Mantegna often is seen calling the shots on "Criminal Minds," but that's more the case than ever this week.
The veteran actor, who plays FBI Supervisory Special Agent David Rossi on the long-running CBS drama, also directs the show for the first time Wednesday (Jan. 22). Titled "The Road Home," the story references a 2012 tale about Rossi's former Marine sergeant (again played by guest star Meshach Taylor), whose disappearance separates Rossi from the rest of the Behavioral Analysis Unit as he launches a search.
"They knew I'd directed before," Mantegna tells Zap2it of being offered the chance by the "Criminal Minds" producers. "I directed a feature years ago called 'Lakeboat,' and our executive producer Erica [Messer] had seen it. Matthew Gray Gubler has directed the show several times, and Thomas Gibson directed his first episode last season ... so she said, 'We'd like you to do one if you'd like to.

So much for the "long, long break." Leonardo DiCaprio is being eyed for Scott Cooper's third feature as a writer/director, The Road Home, based on a Michael Armour novel set in the Great Depression. DiCaprio's Appian Way banner produced Cooper's forthcoming sophomore film Out of the Furnace, a revenge thriller with a heavy-hitting cast. Appian Way will also work on The Road Home, so even if DiCaprio decides to do the hiatus thing after all, the project's got a pedigree.

Once upon a time, Leonardo DiCaprio was going to star in a movie about poor people and violent crime. The film was going to be called Out of the Furnace, and it was going to be directed by Ridley Scott. That deal never quite came together though, so eventually the film went to Crazy Heart director Scott Cooper, who rewrote it and recast the lead with Christian Bale. What could have been a missed opportunity is now a movie tentatively scheduled to be released later this year. The fates have conspired to give DiCaprio another chance at making a movie about poor people and violent crime though, and funnily enough this time it comes with Cooper attached as the director. Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to a still-unreleased Michael Armour novel called “The Road Home,” which they’ve got Cooper signed on to direct and are hoping to develop as a starring...

Cinema has often dipped into the story pool of 1930s crime dramas, which present a simpler time in America.s history. For people making the movies, I mean, not for the people that actually lived through the Depression and subsequent road to war. Without cell phones, DNA analysis, fluorescent bulbs, or terrorists to worry about, movie cops get to be badasses, noir-ish shadows are everywhere, and everything is personal. Michael Armour.s upcoming novel The Road Home looks like it will establish that same gritty tone, and Deadline reports Warner Bros. has already snatched up the rights for it, with Appian Way, the production company run by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran, set to produce. It was only a month ago that Leonardo DiCaprio made headlines when he announced that he was taking "a long, long break" from acting to focus on his environmental activism, but that doesn't mean he's keeping his feet firmly out of Hollywood. The actor also has his ever-busy production shingle Appian Way (which, in addition to vehicles for the actor, has been behind non-dicaprio-starring movies ranging from "Ides Of March" to "Red Riding Hood") and now he's got a new project brewing, which he'll produce and possibly take the lead in. Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson are the frontwomen of Heart, a band whose raw brand of rock and roll has been thrilling fans for more than 30 years. At a time when men dominated rock, the sisters made a name for themselves playing their own instruments and writing their own music, including hits like "Magic Man," "Barracuda," and "Crazy On You." But the constant crush of touring became too much for one of the sisters, leading to a traumatic breakup in 1995.
