Exclusive: Paramount has acquired Novocaine, an action film with franchise potential that will star Jack Quaid (The Boys) and Amber Midthunder, who was a revelation in the Predator spinoff Prey. Production begins in April in South Africa.
Robert Olsen and Dan Berk (Villains) are directing a Lars Jacobson script. It is the first go picture for the FilmNation Entertainment production shingle Infrared.
Producers are Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell (Safehouse Pictures) and Drew Simon (Infrared Pictures). Infrared’s Sam Speiser, Safehouse’s Matt Schwartz, Jacobson, Paul Barbeau, Josh Adler and Julian Rosenberg (Circle of Confusion) will be executive producers.
Quaid will play a sheltered bank executive named Nathan Caine, who has a rare genetic condition that prevents him from feeling physical pain when he is enduring it. When his bank is robbed and one of his co-workers kidnapped, he has to act and finds his greatest liability becomes his greatest strength.

Exclusive: As the FilmNation Entertainment team gathered in Santa Monica this week for the American Film Market, some reflection is in order. It has been 15 years since Glen Basner started the venture. Despite the hardships facing everyone at AFM with strikes and uncertainty, what a different a decade and a half makes. The launch happened in 2008, not the most fortuitous time to launch an indie film finance and production company with global ambitions.
“Back then, Summit and Mandate were the two top companies in the space,” Basner recalled when assessing the opportunity to launch a company back then. “Mandate was sold to Lionsgate and became a U.S. distributor, and Summit started their own U.S. distribution company. There was a hole in the marketplace we thought we could fill, and become that leading American international sales agent for feature films that had no connection to the U.S. distribution world.

Despite the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, sales agents and distributors are convening in Santa Monica this week in the hopes of reconnecting with buyers and kicking off deal discussions at the American Film Market.
After an underwhelming Toronto Film Festival, which saw little deal activity, there’s hope that a few of the starry packages being shopped at AFM will get picked up. But given the climate in Hollywood, many projects won’t officially hit the market until February at the European Film Market in Berlin. The marketplace is not only strained by the strike but the shifting appetites and belt-tightening at the major studios and streamers. At the same time, the return of buyers from China to AFM after several years away is seen as a positive sign.

Actor Jack Quaid is set to star in ‘Novocaine’, a Lars Jacobson-scripted action thriller that will be directed by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen. The project will be introduced at the upcoming American Film Market, with FilmNation Entertainment handling global sales, reports Deadline.
Quaid is coming off ‘Scream’ and ‘Oppenheimer’. In ‘Novocaine’, he plays Nathan Caine. He was born with the rare disorder Cipa (Congenital Insensitivity to Pain), which means he does not feel physical pain.
As per Deadline, he grew up a sheltered child, learning to blend his food so he would not unwittingly chew off his own tongue, and he learned to wear a timer to remind himself when to go to the bathroom.
But when his bank is robbed and his new love taken hostage, his affliction becomes his greatest strength as he sets out to rescue her. The protagonist feels like he’s got a...

Blue Ruin: riveting Southern gothic revenge thriller that seems to be over in the first 20 minutes, and then finds horrific new places to take you [at Amazon Instant Video] Gambit: the humor is musty and old-fashioned, but the cast — including Colin Firth, Alan Rickman, and Cameron Diaz — is mildly fun to watch [my review] [at Amazon Instant Video]

Her: the rise of the machines as romantic dramedy, the Singularity as romantic tragedy; the nicest, gentlest sci-fi horror film ever [my review] [at Amazon Instant Video] Stalingrad: Russia’s first 3D IMAX spectacle is visually intense — it’s set during “bloodiest battle in human history,” after all — but I never warmed to a story meant to be about human resilience [my review] [at Amazon Instant Video]

In the realm of bad movies every movie geek has their favorites. I read with interest Tom Stockman’s musings on The Room, a bad movie masterpiece I have yet to see, it’s in my Netflix queue though!
Bad movies have their place in any movie geeks library. Movie watching parties can be so much fun if the movies picked are from the resumes of directors like Ed Wood, Phil Tucker, or Herschell Gordon Lewis. Laughing along with movies like this can be such a joy. The crew at Mystery Science Theatre made careers out of laughing at bad movies. Low budget crap made by amateur or semiprofessional film makers is so easy to love.
But what are we to make of a movie made by main stream, A-list Hollywood professionals, made by people with really good movies in their career, which is damn near unwatchable?...

Question: Did you get any scoop/updates on what Hart Hanson & Co. are planning for the upcoming 150th episode of Bones? —Elena
Ausiello: Funny story. I not only raised the topic of the big 150th to exec producer Stephen Nathan recently, but I pitched him a story, too. Basically, I told him the milestone outing — which will likely air around midseason — should climax with Brennan proposing to Booth. His response? “Well, [the engagement issue] will be part of this season,...

Pity our poor young colleague Peter Hall. Not only is he a newlywed with two difficult cats and a mortgage; he's also trying to keep himself focused on the two or three outlets he contributes his daily cinematic nerdliness to. And now this: He's got to get his wisdom teeth out. Or better yet, his dentist may want to do a root canal first, and then focus on the four rear extractions. Yes, I said rear extractions. Anyway, here's a collection of films that you'll definitely want to avoid the next time you're in Pete's position: Prone, scared, and with a strange masked man sticking metal tools into your mouth.
1. Marathon Man -- I place it first because A) the film has the great-grand-daddy of dangerous denitalia, B) it's a really obvious pick, and C) it's the first one I thought of! But yes, the sequence (embedded below the jump...

Actress Laura Dern has declared that being dumped by Billy Bob Thornton was the best thing that could have happened to her. Less than two years after the bust-up, the 34-year-old beauty has found new love with musician Ben Harper, is the mother of a beautiful five-month-old boy and has starred in four movies. The blonde star says, "I can't believe how things are working our for me these days." Dern was devastated when Thornton left her for Angelina Jolie, now his wife. But Harper, 32, mended her shattered heart. Dern gushes, "For the first time, I'm with someone who makes me feel free. Ben and I are just two people in love." The sweethearts haven't tied the knot yet, but they are thrilled to be the parents of little Ellery. Meanwhile, Dern's career is booming. She appears in Novocaine and Focus and in the upcoming movies Damaged Care and I Am Sam, starring Sean Penn. Says the actress, "I might just be the luckiest girl alive."...

Hollywood hunk Scott Caan upset co-star Steve Martin when he got carried away performing a stunt on the set of new movie Novocaine. The 25-year-old son of film legend James Caan appears alongside Martin in the crime comedy. But Martin didn't see the funny side when Caan deviated from the script during a fight scene and smashed a bottle over a stuntman's head - instead of breaking it over the bar. Even though the bottle was a prop and the stuntman walked away unhurt, Martin was furious that the young star had tried to ad-lib a stunt and refused to speak to him for days.

British actress Helena Bonham Carter is to star with Steve Martin in a new comedy about a dentist. In the film Novocaine, funnyman Martin will play a successful dentist whose life is thrown into turmoil by the arrival of his wayward brother. The $26 million movie will also star Laura Dern as Martin's fiancee, and Elias Koteas as his brother. Planet Of The Apes star Bonham Carter plays a patient who seduces Martin, causing further chaos. The film, due for release later this year, has been written and directed by David Atkins. A movie source says, "Helena is hysterical. She has been waiting for a good comedy venture for some time."...

Steve Martin is devastated after a short fling with gorgeous British actress Helena Bonham Carter came to an end. The split came while they shot their upcoming film Novocaine (2000) in California - and sources say the 21 year age gap between the pair was the telling factor. A source says, "Helena told him, 'It's just not going to work for us'. She thinks he's a great guy and they had some good times but now it's over." A pal adds, "Steve was already thinking marriage but Helena told Steve she wasn't up for a serious relationship - let alone marriage."...

An unlikely romance is blooming between English rose Helena Bonham Carter and writer/actor/director Steve Martin. Helena, 34, has been working with the 55-year-old funnyman on new movie Novocaine (2000). Sources say they got together while filming and are continuing to date - although they're taking things slowly. Helena only recently split with Kenneth Branagh after five years, while Martin was wary of getting involved in a relationship since ex-lover Anne Heche left him and came out as a lesbian. But the pair are said to be very fond of each other - and a friend of Martin adds, "It's early and they are taking things very slowly. It was really the last thing Helena was expecting but she is very happy with Steve. They are great together."...
