About Rangbhoomi
Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, popularly known as Dadasaheb Phalke (April 30, 1870 – February 16, 1944) was an Indian producer/ director/ screenwriter, widely regarded as the father of Indian Cinema. His debut film Raja Harishchandra was made in 1913 and is recognised as India’s first full-length feature film. In his career, spanning 19 years, he made 95 movies and 26 short films. His most noted works are Mohini Bhasmasur (1913), Satyavan Savitri (1914), Lanka Dahan (1917), Shri Krishna Janma (1918) and Kaliya Mardan (1919).
In 1920, after disputes with his partners, he resigned from his company Hindustan Films and shifted to the holy city of Benaras and renounced the world of cinema. At Benaras he wrote a semi-autobiographical play Rangbhoomi. This film is an invocation from that text.

Mani Kaul
Sheffield Doc/Fest 2011 which will be held in Sheffield, UK from June 8-12, 2011 will host a tribute to Mani Kaul by screening his documentary Siddeshwari Devi.
Directed by Manu Kaul, the documentary based on the life of Hindustani singer Siddeshwari Devi had won the National Film Award for Best Documentary Film in 1989.
Another Indian film which will be screened at the festival is Vertical City by Avijit Mukul Kishore. The film which will screen in Short Docs section gives a peek into the living conditions in the high rise apartments built to rehabilitate slum dwellers in Mumbai.
The five day festival which was first held in 1994 will screen 79 feature films, 28 short films, 8 cross-platform films, two surprise films and one installation as part of the official programme.
