- A man adjusts to outside life after being released from prison.
- In wanting to do a story on them and to understand the nature of their work, Fred Davis of the National Film Board of Canada speaks to Dave Dawson about the organization for which he works, the John Howard Society of Ontario. While the Society deals with various items regarding prisons and prisoners, Davis is most interested in what happens to convicts after they're released. Needing to change the names to protect the privacy of the individuals involved, Dawson tells him the story of Red Barker. Dawson is aware in the time before Red's release that his wife of nine years, Janice Barker, sent him a Dear John letter in he having been more of a burden in her life than not, even before his incarceration six years ago. Dawson knows that to survive on the outside, Red will require all the right kinds of support he can get, which means getting him out of environments which may trigger old bad habits, while getting that positive reinforcement, such as from a loving wife. Dawson also knows that Red has taken mostly right steps including contacting the Society for help on the outside. But Dawson can only do so much in the issue of Janice, he able to provide her with a more complete picture of the situation than the totally negative view she has from where she stands alone.—Huggo
